VOA Radiogram weekend schedule

Hello friends,

See the news below about the new Mighty KBC broadcast to Europe, Saturdays at 1500-1600 UTC, on 9400 kHz via Bulgaria.

Last weekend provided some interesting propagation for VOA Radiogram. The Saturday 1600 UTC show was heard very well in Europe, but for the second week in a row, there was a break in transmission. Perhaps the old (55 years!) transmitter does not like the 100%-duty-cycle MFSK32 mode.

This Easter weekend let’s hope for good propagation and no transmitter mishaps.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 211, all in MFSK32 except where noted:

1:51  Program preview
3:02  Loud shrimp named after rock band*
7:19  Major Azerbaijani Internet provider blocking RFE/RL*
14:43  China blocks South Korean TV*
21:08  MFSK16: Free App Allows Blind Hams to Work PSK31
24:26  MFSK32: Image* and closing announcements

Radio Kuwait returns to shortwave after two-year absence

(Gayle Van Horn QSL Collection)

Radio hobbyist are once again hearing Radio Kuwait on shortwave. During the winter, Radio Kuwait released news that Ampegon would be updating the station's transmitters in Al Kabd. The Swiss-based company Ampegon accepted a contract from Al Rashed to handle the upgrade of five analog shortwave transmitters, that are more than 20 years old for the Kuwait Ministry of Information in Al Kabd transmitter station. The five transmitters were originally installed between 1992-1995. Ampegon planned to refurbish all of the transmitters and in addition upgrade three of them to full digital DRM integration and converted to the new transmitter control system UCS, which will include; new motor drives within the tuning circuits.

Recent monitoring on April 10, 2017, has been observed on 15540 kHz from 1800-2100 UTC using KBD 250 kW / 310 deg to western Europe.

At this time, a definite summer schedule has not been released and DX Bulgaria has predicted the  station may use the schedule from summer 2015. Additional schedule information will be posted at Shortwave Central as it is received

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 April 2017

Solar activity ranged from very low to high during the period due to the many
multiple M-class flares from Region 2644 (N13, L=57, class/area Fkc/520 on 03 April). The first was an M1/Sf flare observed at 03/0105 UTC. The second M-flare was an M5/2n at 03/1429 UTC with an associated Type II (estimated shock speed 746 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed with both flares, however, neither was deemed to be the Earth-directed. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels on 05-08 April, high levels on 04, 09 April, and very high levels on 03 April. The largest flux of the period was 53,552 pfu at 03/1330 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) storm conditions. The period began under the influence of a southern polar, negative polarity, coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Total field ranged between 2 and 6 nT until approximately 04/0000 UTC when it began to increase to a period maximum of 16 nT at 04/1019 UTC. The Bz component reached a period minimum value of -13 nT at 04/0932 UTC. Total field values were at near  the nominal levels between 05/2200 and 07/2000 when Bt ranged from 2 to 7 nT. An
additional enhancement in the interplanetary magnetic field occurred shortly after 07/2000 UTC when Bt increased to 10 nT in conjunction with a solar sector boundary crossing (SSBC) from a negative to a positve solar sector orientation. Solar wind speed began the period near 445 km/s and peaked to a maximum speed of 680 km/s at 08/1544 UTC. The geomagnetic field responded with G1 (Minor) storm conditions on 04, 09 April, and quiet to active levels on 03, 05-08
April.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 April - 06 May 2017

Solar activity is expected to be very low with a slight chance for C-class flare activity on 10-17 April and 05-06 May. Solar activity is likely to be at moderate levels (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) with a slight chance for X-class flares (R3-Strong or greater) on 18-30 April and 01-04 May due to potential in Regions 2644 and 2645 (S10, L=18, class/area Ekc/700 on 03 April).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels likely from 10-12, 18-28 April and 01, 06 May with very high levels likely on 29-30 April due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 10-13, 17-19, 23-29 April, and 01-06 May with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 17, 23-27 April and G2 (Moderate) storm levels likely on 23 April due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the period.

From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot schedule, April 9-15

From the Isle of Music, Week of April 9-15, 2017**
This week, special guest Pablo Menéndez, former member of GESI and current leader of Mezcla, returns to discuss Mezcla (in English), one of Cuba's most important Fusion ensembles. We also listen to music by other former GESI members such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés and Emiliano Salvador.
Four opportunities to listen via shortwave:
1. For Eastern Europe but audible well beyond the target area in all directions with 100Kw, Sunday 1500-1600 UTC on SpaceLine, 9400 KHz, from Kostinbrod, Bulgaria (1800-1900 MSK)
2. For the Americas and parts of Europe, Tuesday 0000-0100 UTC on WBCQ, 7490 KHz from Monticello, ME, USA (Monday 8-9PM EDT in the US)
3 & 4. For Europe and sometimes beyond, Tuesday 1900-2000 UTC and Saturday 1200-1300 on Channel 292, 6070 KHz from Rohrbach, Germany.

**Note that the broadcast week for an episode now runs Sunday-Saturday
Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, April 13, 2017Episode 7 of Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, a  semi-clandestine musical variety program that features genres from A-Z, will air on WBCQ the Planet, 7490 KHz, Thursday, April 13 from 2300-2330 UTC (7:00pm-7:30pm EDT in the Americas). Brought to you by Tilford Productions, which also brings you From the Isle of Music.
(It isn't showing on the WBCQ website yet, but it'll be on.)
Uncle Bill seldom admits what he's up to,  but with both Easter and Passover coming, it's a safe bet that there will be a least a little something related to those.   Whether it  will be normal or weird is what is hard to predict.

Vatican Radio's English shortwave broadcast to Asia comes to an end

Vatican Radio's English shortwave broadcast for Asia has come to an end, with its last transmission going out Friday evening, after nearly 60 years of service. However this does not mean it has disappeared altogether.

What ultimately closed on March 24 as Vatican Radio's English Service for Asia, is however very much alive online on Vatican Radio's website. The gradual phasing out of Vatican Radio's shortwave frequencies is seen as part of the reform of the Roman Curia or the central administration of the Catholic Church here in the Vatican, called for by Pope Francis. The Pope established the new dicastery or office of the Secretariat for Communications on June 27, 2015, bringing 9 media bodies of the Vatican, including Vatican Radio, under the Secretariat's direction, with the purpose of overhauling, streamlining and ultimately merging them as a cohesive unit.

What ended on March 24 as Vatican Radio's English Service for Asia began way back in 1958. The only English programme of Vatican Radio then, headed by Jesuit Father Thomas O'Donnell, was repeated a number of times in different directions, including towards Africa and South Asia. It was a weekly 10-minute news broadcast for India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

However, the need for special programmes adapted to the distinctive cultural needs and tastes of Africa and South Asia gave way to independent  programs for these two regions. In 1964 South Asia got a boost when Pope Paul VI visited Bombay (today Mumbai), India for the 38th International Eucharistic Congress from 2nd to 5th of December. Hence in May 1965, the Indian Section officially came into being with a 10-minute broadcast twice a week each in the evening in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, while English went on air daily Monday through Saturday. In 1982, all the four languages began re-broadcasting their evening programmes the following morning. Three years later - on May 12, 1985, the Malayalam program got extra airing time, broadcasting for 15 minutes in the morning, whereas the rest continued broadcasting for 10 minutes.

In 1986, Pope John Paul II visited India from January 31 to February 11. Just prior to this visit, on January 7th that year, Hindi, Tamil and English were given extra time, and so all the four languages began broadcasting daily for 15 minutes each, in the morning, which was a feature program.

The evening transmission consisted of 6 minutes of news only. By the end of 1986 the evening 6-minute news increased to 10 minutes and was repeated the following morning.

On March 25, 1990, Hindi, Tamil Malayalam and English began broadcasting
for 15 minutes each, repeating it the following morning. And from Sept. 23, 1993, the four languages were transmitting for nearly 20 minutes each, repeating the evening program twice the following morning.

It was on Oct 24, 1993 that the fifth language, Urdu, that is spoken mainly in Pakistan but is also widely followed in India, especially in the north, was added to the Indian Section. It began with a 7-minute Sunday program, as part of the Hindi program. On March 30, 2003 Urdu became a stand-alone program, broadcasting for 15-minutes on Sundays and Wednesdays, and repeated the following mornings.

The Urdu program however closed down in September, 2013, after nearly 20
years of service. On May 16, 2015, Vatican Radio marked the 50th anniversary of its Indian programs with a Holy Mass and a reception.

VOA Radiogram schedule, April 8-9

Hello friends,

Last weekend's item about the Radio Quiet Zone near Green Bank, West Virginia, included this: "It becomes apparent in Green Bank that visitors have to navigate the old-fashioned way: by reading road signs. That's because GPS comes to a screeching halt as you approach this West Virginia town, which has two churches, an elementary school, a library and the world's largest radio telescope."

VOA Radiogram listener Warren in Arizona took issue with this, pointing out that "GPS units do not transmit."

I've never owned a GPS device. And I will never have a car navigation system because it's difficult enough for me to drive without having to look at stuff on the dashboard. And that's why, when I buy a car (which is not very often), I buy one of the lower-end models that does not have a lot of stuff on the dashboard.

Anyway, it's true that GPS satellite signals can be received, and location determined, even in the Green Bank Radio Quiet Zone. But, to the best of my limited understanding, some car navigation systems also involve maps that are downloaded through cell telephone networks, which are unavailable near the Green Bank telescope.

On to other matters: Last Saturday at about 1625 UTC, the transmitter on 17580 kHz abruptly left the air, leaving many of us with half a picture of the Sputnik satellite.  And because the transmitter did not come back, the International Geophysical Year logo (seen above from the Sunday 1930 UTC show) was not seen at all. Let's hope I don't break the transmitter again this weekend.

This weekend's VOA Radiogram has some interesting news items and six MFSK32 images.  One item is in MFSK16 in case reception is difficult.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 210, 8-9 April 2017, all in MFSK32 except where noted:

 1:50  Program preview
3:05  New Horizons spacecraft halfway to next destination*
 6:45  Graphene-oxide membranes for desalination*
13:19  Ebay founder pledges $100 million to fight fake news*
18:11  MFSK16: NOAA's biggest ship ends 800-day voyage

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 March - 02 April 2017

Solar activity ranged from very low to high during the period due tomultiple M-class flares from Region 2644 (N12, L=57, class/area, Fkc/450 on 02 April). The first was an M4/1f flare at 01/2148 UTC with an associated Type IV radio sweep. The second M-flare was an M5/2n at 02/0802 UTC with associated Type II (628 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps. This was followed by an M2 flare at 02/1300 UTC with an associated weak Tenflare (110 sfu). A long duration M2/Sf flare
was produced at 02/1838 UTC. Finally, the region produced an impulsive M5 flare at 02/2033 UTC with associated multi-frequency discrete radio emissions. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to high levels on 27 March - 01 April and reached very high levels on 02 April. The largest flux of the period was 62,136 pfu observed at 02/1525 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm conditions under the influence of a recurrent, polar connected, negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). This period began under a nominal solar wind environment before quickly becoming enhanced. Total field increased to a maximum of 19 nT at 27/0752 UTC while the Bz component deflected southward to -14 nT at 27/0827 UTC. Solar wind speeds started the period near 375 km/s and peaked to a maximum speed of 781 km/s at 28/0711 UTC. The
geomagnetic field responded with G2 (Moderate) storm conditions on 27 March, G1 (Minor) levels on 28, 30-31 March, and quiet to active conditions on 29 March, 01-02 April.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 April - 29 April 2017

Solar activity is likely to be at moderate levels (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) with a slight chance for X-class flares (R3-Strong or greater) on 03-04 April due to flare potential in Region 2644. On 05-07 Apr, activity levels will decrease to a chance for moderate (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares with a slight chance for X-class
flares (R3-Strong or greater) due to potential in Region 2645.

There is a slight chance for an S1 (Minor) solar radiation storm from 03-08 April due to the threat of significant flare activity from both Regions 2644 and 2645 (S10, L=18, class/area Ehc/600 on 02 April).

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels likely from 03-11, 18-28 April and very high levels likely on 29 April due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 03-04, 17-19, and 23-29 April with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 17, 23-27 April and G2 (Moderate) storm levels likely on 23 April due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the period.
