July 1st is Canada Day, and since RCI is no longer blessing shortwave listeners with its presence on the short waves, Fred Waterer, a genuine Canadian, and "Uncle Bill" Tilford, an American who is frequently mistaken for one, will present  Canada D'eh, an affectionate salute to the occasion with music, humor, fun facts, and stories on WBCQ The Planet, which is right next door to Canada with time donated by Angela and Allan Weiner.

Two new Dutch stations register for shortwave broadcast

 

From BDXC, the following has been posted:

Two Dutch stations have recently registered on HFCC's Global HF schedule from 28 June to 29 October 2021:

Radio Europe Netherlands (EUR) registered daily for a 24-hour schedule on 5975 kHz with 1 kilowatt.

HFCC transmitter site is AAR Alphen aan den Rijn (located in province of South Holland (Zuid Holland ZH). 

Offshore Music Radio (OMR) is registered for daily broadcast for a 24-hour schedule using 1 kilowatt on 6170, 7215, 7275, 15270, 17515 kHz. The transmitter site is Nijmegen (NIJ), in the eastern part of the Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland, near the German border.

Scandinavian Weekend Radio is set to resume its monthly broadcast on July 3, 2021. SWR has been bringing you the hits, on the first weekend of every month since July 1, 2001 - a milestone this year!

SAQ Grimeton Radio Station slated to celebrate Alexanderson Day

 

The annual transmission event on Alexanderson Day with the Alexanderson Alternator from 1924

on VLF 17.2 kHz CW with the call sign SAQ, is scheduled for Sunday, July 4th, 2021. The Alexander Grimeton Association is planning to carry out two broadcasts to the world from the old Alexanderson alternator SAQ. Only required staff will be in place, due to the ongoing pandemic.

Transmission schedule:

1. Startup and tuning at 10:30 CET (08:30 UTC) with a transmission of a message at 11:00 CET (09:00 UTC)

2. Startup and tuning at 13:30 CET (11:30 UTC) with a transmission of a message at 14:00 CET (12:00 UTC)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 June 2021

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period.  Region 2833 (N23, L=208, class/area Hsx/160 on 21 Jun) produced a C1/Sf flare observed at 25/1403 UTC. A long-duration C3 x-ray event was observed from around the NE limb at 23/0707 UTC. This event was accompanied by a Type II radio sweep with an estimated shock velocity of 724 km/s. Regions 2835 (S18, L=053, class/area Dso/230 on 27 Jun) and 2836 (S27, L=057, class/area Cro/020 on 27 Jun) produced a few B-class events during the period. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph data. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 22 Jun and 26-27 Jun. High levels were observed on 21 Jun and 23-25 Jun. A maximum flux of 4,330 pfu was observed at 21/1435 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity was was at mostly quiet levels with isolated unsettled periods observed early on 22 Jun, late on 24 Jun, and early on 25 Jun. Solar wind parameters were mostly unremarkable during the period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 June - 24 July 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at predominately very low levels during the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 29-30 Jun and 01-06 Jul due to CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 30 Jun, 04 Jul, 09-10 Jul and 12-13 Jul due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Hello friends

If you are participating in amateur radio's Field Day this weekend, enjoy the event and good luck in the contest. The only Shortwave Radiogram during Field Day operating hours is Sunday 0800-0830 UTC on 5850 and 7730 kHz. Tune in and show the other FD participants (who are awake) how it works.

Chances are, where you live, it has not been only hot, but also humid. This weekend, we include a story about extracting drinking water from water vapor, which seems plentiful this time of year.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. Japan's shortwave transmitter station still in business after 80 years

KOGA, Ibaraki Prefecture--Standing tall and proud over an area of 1 million square meters or so, a forest of steel towers in two-tone red and white is the dominant feature under the blue sky against the backdrop of Mount Tsukubasan.

This is KDDI Corp.’s Yamata Transmitting Station, the nation’s only facility broadcasting shortwave radio programs to overseas listeners.

The station started broadcasts on Jan. 1, 1941. The main building still retains a prewar ambience.

ARD Radio Festival 2021 slated for June 26-September 17 broadcast

 

For 12 weeks, ARD Kulturwellen will present music, cabaret, novels hot off the press, and in-depth discussions. All offers are also available in the free ARD Audiothek app.

Every day from 8 p.m. to midnight you can look forward to a diverse range of concert highlights, operas, talks, readings, cabaret, and jazz on ARD Kulturwellen .

Elbphilharmonie, Ruhrtriennale, Bayreuth Festival: summer festivals on the radio. The focus is on live broadcasts and recordings of the major summer festivals: a glamorous start to the ARD radio festival with the Waldbühne concert by the Berlin Philharmonic is planned. 

The opening of the Rheingau Music Festival and the opening of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival will also be live - with the pianist Hélène Grimaud , among others- and the opening of the Bayreuth Festival will be broadcast. 

The listeners can also look forward to top-class concerts from the Beethovenfest in Bonn, this year with the Vienna Philharmonic, recordings from the Munich Opera Festival and the Ruhrtriennale, as well as a new production of Don Giovanni from Salzburg. The music Aeterna orchestra and choir play there under the direction of Teodor Currentzis. Further highlights are the concerts with the jazz stars Michael Wollny and Till Brönner.

Celebrating Midwinter in Antarctica

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is celebrating Midwinter’s Day (Monday 21 June) as staff in three British Antarctic Territory Research Stations mark the shortest and darkest day of the year on the frozen continent. The tradition began in the days of heroic exploration of Antarctica with Captain Scott; our science and support teams will celebrate by braving the elements with a Winter Olympics, crazy golf, murder mystery evening and a movie marathon. 

This is a particularly poignant Midwinter as it is the 60th Anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, which designated Antarctica as a “natural reserve, devoted to peace and science”. The 43 Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting is currently taking place in Paris and Antarctic nations are discussing how to protect Antarctica for future generations.

BBC World Service Antarctic Mid Winter Broadcast 2021

 

The producer of the upcoming BBCWS Antarctic Midwinter broadcast on Monday 21st June 2130-2200 UT says all four frequencies tested on Monday will be used i.e.035 kHz DHA, 6170 kHz ASC, 7305 WOF and 9505 kHz WOF:

"Hi - I'm (proudly) the Executive Producer of the Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast. It's made by Boffin Media for the BBC ... I'm about to deliver this year's edition.

In terms of the broadcast itself, following the test on Monday, the BBC's decided to transmit on all four of the frequencies above this year. Because it's a unique broadcast, the SW version is 30 minutes long whereas the global version is 26min 29sec (to fit the standard World Service half hour, following the news bulletin). The SW version also has a different introduction as it's aimed just at our audience of 35 in Antarctica.

This year its also being carried on most of the World Service English streams from 2132-2200 UT, however the only shortwave outlets at this time are to Africa on 11810 and 12095 kHz via Ascension. For those of us in the UK it should also be on the BBCWS DAB stream at the same time.

Its slightly shorter via the regular WS streams so to hear the full broadcast we should listen to the special Antarctica frequencies.

Every year, the BBC World Service makes this special program for just 40 listeners: the team of scientists and support staff isolated at British research stations in the Antarctic midwinter. The Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast is unlike anything else on the BBC World Service.

Presented by Cerys Matthews, it features messages from family and friends at home as well as music requests from Antarctica. For decades it has been part of the traditional midwinter celebrations.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 June 2021

Solar activity was at very low levels. The two regions on the disk, Region 2833 (N24, L=210, class/area Cso/120 on 19 Jun) and Region 2834 (N20, L=281, class/area Bxo/010 on 18 Jun) were both quiet and are stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 14-16 Jun and high levels on 17-20 Jun. A maximum flux of 4,860 pfu was observed at 17/1435 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels on 14 Jun through midday on 15 Jun. Unsettled to Gi (Minor) storm levels were observed midday on 15 Jun due to influences from the arrival of a recurrent,

negative polarity CH HSS. 

Unsettled to active levels continued through 16 Jun into early on 17 Jun. Solar wind speeds reached near 625 km/s, with total field readings of 15 nT and Bz readings of -10 nT, all on 16 Jun. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 June - 17 July 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low through the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 21-23 Jun and on 14-17 Jul due to recurrent CH HSS influences. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 24 Jun, 04 Jul, 09-10 Jul, and on 12-13 Jul due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. This week's programme (first transmission on Saturday by Channel 292) starts with a piano prelude from Frederic Chopin, part of a concerto for two recorders by Vivaldi, and Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze arranged for orchestra by William Walton. Following on - a song by Mozart, a movement from a cello concerto by Boccherini, and part of a suite for cello and piano composed by Charles-Marie Widor.

The programme ends with the 4th movement of Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.
