Update on Radio Liberty on mediumwave

 

UPDATE! Radio Liberty said late last night (15 April) that the operator of the Lithuanian transmitter on 1386 had agreed to continue relaying RL for free.

Radio Liberty announces station status

 

Radio Liberty's Russian service announced today (15 April) that it would no longer be broadcast on 1386. It said broadcasts would continue on satellite and online.at:

Opinion: The U.S. government left its own journalists from VOA and Radio Liberty behind in Afghanistan

Now that the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is complete, many stories of heroic efforts to save Americans and Afghan allies are pouring out, each describing one facet of the chaos and dysfunction that plagued the effort to evacuate all of those in Kabul who had placed their trust in the United States. Among the most tragic examples is the story of how the Biden administration left behind more than 100 government-sponsored journalists, plus their families, after putting them through three weeks of hell.

The administration was warned early and often about the 600 or so employees, contractors, and family members who worked for U.S.-sponsored news organizations under the umbrella of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, a federal agency funded by Congress. They include journalists working for the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) who have worked in Afghanistan for years — at great personal risk. The Taliban has killed four RFE/RL journalists since 2016 through suicide bomb attacks, and the company’s journalists routinely receive death threats from the extremists.

RFE broadcast from Hungarian revolution digitized

The RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) Broadcast Collection at Stanford’s Hoover Institution contains some 80,000 studio tape reels of Radio Free Europe (RFE) and Radio Liberty (RL) broadcasts. Now, thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team of RFE affiliates, it also contains rare log tapes (low-quality recordings of shortwave transmitter output) for the crucial three weeks of the Hungarian Revolution (October 19 – November 13, 1956).

During this era, log tapes were routinely reused (no others have been preserved), but thanks to historical accident and modern technology, the complete recordings of every RFE broadcast hour from that momentous period are now available in digitized form at the Hoover Archives at Stanford University and the Hungarian National Szechenyi Library. While the transcripts of many of these programmes aired during those three weeks of 1956 have long been available, the recovered 1956 log tapes provide the only complete audio record of RFE’s broadcasts at that time.

RFE/RL to begin new Radio Mashaal broadcast

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (FE/RL) will begin broadcasting in the local Pashto dialects to Pakistan and the border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The new station - called Radio Mashaal ("Torch" in Pashto) - will offer an alternative to the growing number of Islamic extremist radio stations in the region.
"There is an urgent need for accurate, objective news and information in Pakistan's tribal areas," says U.S. Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke. "Radio Mashaal's commitment to professional journalism in the local language will be an important contribution toward peace, reconciliation and democracy in the region."

Veteran Pakistani journalist and author Ahmed Rashid says he hopes Radio Mashaal "will provide people the kind of information they need to make the right decisions about their lives."

One surprise in store for listeners will be the reappearance of Haroon Bacha, a popular Pashtun singer who fled the region last year amid death threats from the Taliban. The 36-year-old recording artist - whose dozens of albums, music videos and television appearances made him one of the most famous entertainers in the region - will be hosting a cultural affairs show for Radio Mashaal. There is an urgent need for accurate, objective news and information in Pakistan's tribal areas
The first broadcast will air live on January 15 at 4pm local time. Radio Mashaal's correspondents will be covering local and international news with in-depth reports on terrorism, politics, women's issues, and health care (with an emphasis on preventive medicine). The station will feature roundtable discussions and interviews with tribal leaders and local policymakers in addition to regular call-in programs aimed at giving listeners the opportunity to be heard.
Radio Mashaal will operate out of a new bureau in Pakistan and broadcast from RFE/RL's Prague headquarters. The station will share a frequency with VOA's Radio Deewa and transmit via FM and shortwave. Online, Radio Mashaal's website will provide a live stream of its broadcasts. International broadcasters on Iran's 'seditious' list

Iran’s Intelligence Ministry has issued a list of some 60 US and international organizations and media outlets - including RFE/RL’s Radio Farda - that it accuses of backing “sedition” in Iran and playing a role in the post-election unrest. The list, carried yesterday by Iranian media, includes television networks and other media including Radio Farda, BBC, VOA, and Radio Zamaneh, which is based in the Netherlands.

An unspecified deputy intelligence minister for international affairs was quoted as having accused the organizations of working against the Iranian regime and being “examples of foreign subversive organizations.”

Other organizations include the Open Society Institute of U.S. philanthropist George Soros, Human Rights Watch (HRW), and Freedom House. The unnamed official added that contacts and cooperation with these organizations are banned.
