"After the Shot"
On the night of April 14th 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Twelve days later, Booth himself was shot dead. Conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination flourished. And 140 years later, for both historians and ordinary people, they are still very much alive.
This programme in the Global Perspective 2007 series tries to unravel why people believe the truth - and a myriad of legends - about the assassination of a great American president.
Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1227 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0427 (Western N America) Repeated: Sun 1400 (South Asia), Sun 1900 (N America, Africa)

Shaping a New Africa: Liberal Democracy
All over Africa, people want democracy. But the forces that have shaped and obstructed democratic development have often been larger than any individual country. Political Scientist Tukumbi Lumumba Kasongo outlines the history of liberal democracy in Africa from independence, through the Cold War and up to the present day and the war on terror.
Looking specifically at Algeria, Ghana and Congo-Brazzaville, he analyses the elements that are needed for democracy to take root in African countries. Roel van Meijenfeldt, Executive Director of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, adds his views on the ways European countries can help support the development of democracy in Africa, drawing
on his own extensive experience. Have your say on the topic at

Rightly or wrongly, when you think of science and technology you don't usually think of the poorer countries of the world. And indeed, a recent study highlights the extremely vulnerable position of research and education in many developing countries. But there's also hope that the brain drain could be turned to Africa's advantage, as you can hear in the Research File.
There's also positive news about China's efforts to tackle one of its major environmental problems, soil erosion. And the first ever assessment of how global population movements are putting people increasingly at risk from rising sea levels and climate change.
