Montserrat breaks ground for new broadcast facility

Acting Chief Minister Idabelle Meade led a special ceremony yesterday to signal the start of construction of state of the art broadcasting facilities on Montserrat. The ground breaking ceremony took place at the site in St Peters, identified for the building of a new home to house Radio Montserrat and the Government Information Unit and Television studios.
The new state of the art building will be the permanent home for the Government’s only broadcasting organization and its information dissemination unit. Radio Montserrat currently operates in a converted dwelling house, since moving offices during the volcanic situation.
Station manager Herman Sargeant said: “Radio Montserrat has been operating in temporary accommodation for twelve long years, twelve long years of hardship and suffering, with staff having to work in less than favourable conditions, poor facilities, cramped space and a lot more. Speaking on behalf of myself and my staff, let me say we are very happy, happier than you perhaps think, and we are looking forward to the day we operate from proper custom-built radio facilities, studios, newsroom office and so forth”.
