Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Kaira has declared 2010 as the Year of Radio due to its extensive outreach and it being the cheapest source to disseminate information to the masses.
“The medium of radio has become the most popular means of mass communication around the world, but in Pakistan radio is not given the attention it deserves,” the minister said in a statement yesterday. “The present democratic government is committed to freedom of media and its promotion and would adopt measures to make the medium flourish in the country in view of its widepread coverage,” he added.
Mr Kaira said electronic and print media has progressed tremendously but more attention would now be paid to develop the medium of radio. He said, improved broadcasting quality, more innovative and entertaining content, and new technological developments in areas have made radio a resurgent medium, extremely popular in many fields including education, advertising and entertainment.
Declaring 2010 as Year of Radio, he assured all government support to promote the medium so as to highlight the policies of the government besides challenges facing the country.
Director-General of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Murtaza Solangi, appreciated the announcement of 2010 as The Year of Radio by the minister, saying the state-run Radio Pakistan is actively contributing towards the cherished goal of peace and national harmony.
