Radio Netherlands Program Guide - April 3-9


Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programs coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 3 APRIL
*** The State We're In ***

Courtroom dramatics: Rob Fransman's parents were murdered in Sobibor prison camp during WWII. John Demjanjuk is on trial for being a prison guard at the camp. Rob explains what attending the trial in person means, and doesn't mean, in his personal quest for justice.

Chrislam: Nigeria has seen a lot of bloody conflict between Christians and Muslims, especially recently. But in one community, the two faiths have melded together in what's called "Chrislam". We hear from Christians and Muslims who worship together, including a Christian pastor and his Muslim wife.

House churches: Christianity in China is being persecuted as it grows in popularity. Underground churches are being demolished and their leaders thrown into labour camps. The vast network of government informants and enforcers are ensuring that underground churches remain there: underground.

'Ice Creams at Easter' - by Naima Albdiouni

The young Flemish author Naima Albdiouni was born in Antwerp in 1981. She recently published her first novel which is set in Morocco. It's also the setting for her Radio Books story. The Sheik of Qatar is making a state visit to Morocco but not everyone is happy with his arrival. It highlights the divisions in the country and pits old against new, tradition against progress.

'Running with Atalanta' (Orig. Broadcast February 2006)

Two young women were studying law - one in the Netherlands and the other in Latvia. Ten years later their lives would intersect in what the United Nations calls the fastest growing criminal activity in the world: human trafficking. Both women have written about their experiences - one as an advocate and the other as a victim of trafficking. David Swatling won a Prix Marulic award for the programme at a festival in Croatia.

They are accompanied by Michael Moor on wind instruments, Edwin Corzilius, bass, Frits Landesbergen, drums, and Jeroen de Rijk, percussion. All of that, on the European Jazz Stage with guest host and renowned bass player, Hans Mantel.

Belle van Zuylen was a Dutch-born 18th-century writer, also known as Madame de Charriere. She published her first novel at the age of 23 - a satire on the nobility. She also wrote plays, operas and composed music. Her writing is often about the upbringing of women. Chris Chambers explores her life and times.

Aletta Jacobs was born in the Netherlands in the mid 19th century. She was the first woman there to complete a university degree and become a doctor. She opened a clinic for destitute women and children, and led the Dutch Suffragette movement in the early 20th century. Laura Durnford explores her life and times.

This week, host Dheera Sujan talks to two artists about the role of art in a conflict riven society. Just days ago, Bangladeshi photographer activist Shahidul Alam's exhibition of photographs called 'Crossfire' was closed down by the police before it could even open. And Sri Lankan artist Jagath Weerasinghe also works under the severely watchful eye of a militarised and intolerant regime. The two artists discuss the different ways they express themselves in a society where freedom of expression cannot be taken for granted.

British writer Rebecca West's life spanned most of the 20th century. At 14 she became involved in the suffrage movement, had affairs with Charlie Chaplin and H.G. Wells, and Time Magazine called her the greatest women's writer in the world. Her great-niece and an actress talk to David Swatling about how they were inspired by her.

'Durga's Court' (Orig. Broadcast September 2006)

In a small Indian village people come to Shabnam Ramaswamy's court. It's a forum for the poor, the illiterate; those who have neither money nor influence. Sitting in judgment like Durga, the ten-armed Hindu goddess of vengeance, Shabnam wields a power which is a mystery to those who stand before her. Dheera Sujan won a Bronze Medal from the United Nations for this program.
