*** Earthbeat (primary programme) ***

On this week's Earthbeat we take a walk on the wild side and find out why bison are enjoying their new home in the sandunes of the Netherlands. We go in search of a pack of wolves in Germany who, despite being elusive, are causing controversy between hunters and environmentalists and we hear from the dodo - well uncover a skeleton at least which points to more clues to why it died out.

So whether endangered species or extinct ones, an interesting mix on this week's programme.

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 18 July
*** The State We're In ***

Research shows that beautiful people are treated better in every walk of life, so it stands to reason that parents want their kids to be beautiful - but where do we draw the line?

In the favellas of Rio de Janeiro, people may not be able to afford refrigerators, education for their kids or pay their phone bills, but they're determined to find the money for breast augmentation.

In Italy, the country which more than any other glorifies the cult of beauty, a rebellion is underway. The Ugly Club has a champion.

The Kaffirs are a little-known minority within Sri Lanka who are on the verge of extinction. Yet their music and culture are suddenly popular in the country's mainstream. What does their popularity mean for their cultural survival?

After we aired a piece on how amicable "collaborative divorce" can be, we heard from a listener, who identifies herself as "Liz". She's going through a collaborative divorce and it's milked her dry financially and emotionally and is anything but collaborative.

*** The State We're In - Midweek Edition ***

ALMOST MURDERED IN MOGADISHU: Ahmed Tajir is a journalist with Radio Shabelle in Mogadishu, Somalia. On 7 June 2009, he and his boss were attacked by gunmen in a market. He tells Jonathan about his ordeal, and his hope to flee Somalia before he is killed for his work.

BREAKING THE RULES IN LITHUANIA: Audrius Braukyla
is head of news for Lithuania Radio. He tells Jonathan about what it was like to work under Soviet rule, and about the press freedom that came to Lithuania two years before the fall of the USSR.

THIS WEEK'S THEME: "The Right to Be Fat"

PROUD TO BE FAT: The leader of the fat pride movement in the United States Marilyn Wann, who weighs 285 pounds (or 129 kilos), was spurred into action when her health insurance was denied. She says we live in a "fat-hating society" and calls for an end to the institutionalised discrimination and social ostracism inflicted on large people. Marilyn claims she has a right to be fat and argues strongly that fat people can be just as healthy as anyone else.

VIEWS ON FAT PEOPLE: Ginger Gorman went into a busy Amsterdam bar and asked people what they thought when they saw an obese person on the street. The answers ranged from pity and moral outrage to assumptions that a fat person's life must be really hard and that they must be unhealthy.

ANTI-FAT HEALTH EXPERT: Experts describe obesity as a "pandemic" which threatens to overwhelm health systems around the globe. Given this, does anyone have the right to be fat? Dr John Tickell is an Australian health and longevity expert with strong views on obesity. When asked whether people have a right to be fat, his answer was unequivocal: "That right is yours, the question is: Are you disadvantaging the rest of society?"

Belgium is traditionally known for its hearty, and some might say heart attack inducing, cuisine. But for one day a week, the citizens of one town are being encouraged to ignore the steak and look kindly on lentils, as Ghent introduces Vegetarian Thursday. I take a trip to this European veggie hotspot, to see how the idea is catching on.

Also on the show, nearly ten years ago, a disease swept the Samoan Islands, virtually obliterating its core crop, taro. What lesson have been learnt? And we ask what place religion has in saving the environment and why we disagree about climate change at all.

The tale of two cities with very different attitudes to traffic noise. Amsterdam, where the bicycle is king of the road, has dealt with noise by making sure that parking a car in the centre is so expensive you'd need to sell your car to do it.

The most edible of Dutch delicacies, the eel, is under threat. This mysterious fish travels thousands of miles to spawn in the Sargasso sea but lives most of its life in freshwater rivers and lakes in Europe. Stocks are declining at an alarming rate, and are 100th of what they were 20 years ago. So who's to blame and what's being done about it?

We follow fishermen as they release eels in an effort to restock. Conservation groups think that this isn't enough and the only way to keep this species from extinction is to keep it off the supermarket shelves.

*** Global Perspectives (primary programme) ***

Radio Books takes a break as we present our annual documentary exchange series featuring eight national and international broadcasters giving their perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Islands.

'Islands of Security'

In South Africa's not so distant past the word 'island' would have conjured up Robben Island off Cape Town, the prison of Nelson Mandela during apartheid. But in a country of very high levels of violent crime, other 'islands' are springing up inland - the gated and guarded residential estates which are becoming a refuge for the wealthy.

SAFM radio producer Sibahle Malinga visits Dainfern security estate in Johannesburg's northern suburbs - protected by a high electrified double fence and armed guards. She also visits the nearby township of Diepsloot to find out how its residents feel about being outside the fence.

*** Global Perspectives (repeat from Sunday) ***

Radio Books takes a break as we present our annual documentary exchange series featuring eight national and international broadcasters giving their perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Islands.

'Death Diminishes Me'

When John Donne hopefully asserted "no man is an island," he couldn't have foreseen the agony of isolation suffered by those living with the HIV virus. Add feelings of guilt, abandonment, anger and the wearing effects of a serious illness and the sufferer can feel not so much like an island as an abandoned leper colony.

Radio New Zealand producer Gareth Watkins talks with several men who have been living with HIV for more than twenty years. They are movingly honest about their experiences, their lost lovers and friends, their isolation and hope - in the documentary 'Death Diminishes Me'.

*** The State We're In - Midweek Edition ***

GAY PRIDE IN MOSCOW: The mayor of Moscow has banned the gay pride march for the 4th year in a row. But its organizer Nikolai Alekseev, says he'll march anyway. He believes Russia's constitution entitles him to the same rights as everyone else.

YOUNG RUSSIA: Evgeney Nacanov of the right wing organization "Young Russia" believes that gay people have no place in Russian society and that marches, such as the one Nikolai organized, should be stopped.

We look at the right to a divorce with the following stories:

FORCED INTO MARRIAGE, REFUSED A DIVORCE: Sameer is Indian, gay and married because of overwhelming pressure. He knew within weeks that he had to get a divorce, but convincing his wife was another story.

KHUL: Khul is an ancient Islamic form of divorce controversially re-introduced in Egypt in 2000. Prof. Mulki al Sharmani, and Nariman tell Jonathan Groubert how it works, and the consequences of divorce in a conservative society.

COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE: Maury White used to be ashamed of admitting he was a divorce attorney, but now that he's changed to Collaborative Law, he feels passionate and proud of his job - he tells Jonathan Groubert why.
