Shortwave News on DVD

Digital Reprint of all Editions ever published from 1957-2015

The "Danish Short Wave Club International" (DSWCI) was founded in November 1956 and is one of the most traditional and by far the most international club for radio enthusiasts worldwide. Since January 1957 the club publishes the regular magazine "Shortwave News" which for decades now is a unique source of information due to a most international network of correspondents and monitors worldwide.

From 1957 to 2000 "Shortwave News" was published a monthly basis, and after that every sixth week. In 1957 and 1958 the magazine was published in Danish and from 1957 to 1969 two different editions were distributed: "Shortwave News" in English and "Kortbolge Nyt" in Danish. Since January1970 the magazine is exclusively in English language.

The DSWCI decided its last Annual General Meeting in 2015 to close the club at the end of 2016. But it was agreed that everything ever published from the DSWCI should also be available for future generations of radio enthusiasts:

A unique blend of accurate news, reports and background information which was only possible with the great support of countless people during thepast almost six decades.

During the last years we got access to every edition of "Shortwave News" and"Kortbolge Nyt" ever published. The magazines were scanned, digitized and processed with an OCR software. The work is finished and therefore we now can offer a DVD with almost 60 years of radio-history and club-history
of the DSWCI.

New Domestic Broadcast Survey Released

The 53 years old DSWCI which counts experienced DX-ers in 33 countries all over the world as members, has just issued the 12th Edition of its annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey, edited by Anker Petersen. This survey is divided into three parts:

Part 1: The 38th edition of the Tropical Bands Survey covering all ACTIVE broadcasting stations on 2300 - 5700 kHz, including clandestines.

Part 2: Domestic stations on international shortwave bands above 5700 kHz broadcasting to a domestic audience.

Part 3: Deleted frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz which have not been reported heard during the past five years, but may reappear.

This new Survey is based upon many official sources and DX-bulletins. A10 schedules are included when available.

In order to make the DBS reliable, our own monitors around the world have checked throughout the period May 2009 – March 2010, if each of the 900 station frequencies is on the air. ACTIVE stations are marked with an A (”Regular”), B (”Irregular”) or C (”Sporadic”) in the list. D means ”Likely inactive”.

A unique feature is the right column called ”Last log”. It shows the last month and year before DBS deadline on March 31, 2010 when the particular station was reported logged by a DX-er somewhere in the world. This is another way of indicating the current audibility of the station. To avoid inactive stations in this DBS, most frequencies which have not been heard during the past year, have been deleted and are moved to Part 3.

Other useful features for easy identification (ID) are the parallel frequencies and reference to Station ID slogans.

Three sample extracts from the DBS-12 are shown the next page. Reviews can be found on http://www.dswci.org/

All buyers of DBS-12 will get a username and password to the monthly updates on the tropical bands published as "Tropical Bands Monitor" on our website. The similar data from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 are available at www.dswci.org/tbm to anybody.

The 28 pages A-4 size DBS-12 is available by e-mail as pdf-format (about 365 KB). A limited number is also available printed on paper. Since the clandestines are not included any longer above 5700 kHz, the prices have been reduced.

It is sold by the treasurer:

Trends in Tropical Bands broadcasting 2008

Special thanks to Anker Petersen, editor of DSWC International newsletter DX Window, for sharing the following feature with the Shortwave Central blog readers.
Gayle VanHorn

Trends in Tropical Bands broadcasting 2008
by Anker Petersen
Since 1973 the Danish Shortwave Club International has published an annual publication which first covered the frequency range of 2.200 to 5.800 kHz and was called the "Tropical Bands Survey". But since 1999 I expanded it as editor to cover all Domestic broadcasting stations on shortwave from 2.200 kHz till 30 MHz. That is now called the Domestic Broadcasting Survey - the DBS- and it is popular worldwide among hard-core DX-ers. Our latest edition was published in April 2008.

The task for the editor of the DBS is, throughout the year until the next publication, to check the bands himself and follow the loggings from our members and other DX-ers around the world. For each station in the list, a note is taken of the months when it has been heard. If a station has not been heard by any DX-er during the past 12 months, it is deleted. By this measure, the DBS contains only the active domestic broadcasting stations.

With this systematic registration of broadcasting stations on the Tropical Bands each year, it is possible to make some statistics on how many frequencies were active in each region of the world and compare these numbers.

I have selected the Tropical Bands Surveys published with 12 years intervals in 1973, 1985 and 1997, and the Domestic Broadcasting Surveys from 2003 and 2008. For each of these five years I have then counted the number of active Domestic Broadcasting stations between 2.200 and 5.800 kHz. International broadcasters, Clandestine and Pirate stations are not included in these statistics.

Active domestic transmitters on 2200 – 5800 kHz

Region 1973 1985 1997 2003 2008

Central Africa 102 76 40 26 17
Southern Africa 57 39 33 9 8
Middle East 9 4 1 0 0

Indian Subcontinent 62 45 45 36 31
South East Asia 40 29 21 7 4
Indonesia 171 105 65 19 14

China, Taiwan, Mongolia 119 110 75 44 32
CIS (former USSR) 61 59 47 21 5
Far East 38 28 28 17 9

Papua New Guinea 17 20 20 20 16
Australia and other Pacific 10 4 13 7 12

Central America, Mexico 21 23 24 17 6
Caribbean 29 3 3 4 2
Northwestern South America 98 41 19 5 3

Ecuador 47 33 22 13 8
Peru 78 69 78 53 33
Bolivia 35 42 25 15 18

Brazil 107 87 67 50 40
Southern South America 5 2 1 0 0

Total 1106 819 627 363 258

We are approaching the end of the Era of Domestic broadcasting on the Tropical Bands for two main reasons: The technical standard of a large part of the transmitters in the tropical countries is poor and they cannot be repaired for economical reasons. In more developed countries the domestic shortwave transmitters are being replaced by FM- and Internet-networks. The trend above is clear: The falling trend continues and has become more steep during the past year.

The average number of closed domestic stations per year during 1997-2003 was 44 whereas it was only 14 during 2003-2007. But a total of 49 have left the bands during the past 12 months! If that pessimistic trend continues, the end of domestic broadcasting on the Tropical Bands may appear already in year 2014! A more realistic closure is around 2021.

Countries like Brazil, Peru, China, India, Bolivia and Papua New Guinea are still dominating the Tropical Bands.

Stations on the Tropical Bands which have closed down in 2006-2007, including International stations and Clandestines.

Nostalgic look at DX Window

Denmark
9520 History. First. From Nov 1967 till Dec 1969 the DX-Window was broadcast 113 times in English by "Radio Denmark Shortwave" each Sunday on 9520 kHz. Producer of the 20 minute programme was the famous Christian Flagstad with Torre Ekblom, Kaj Bredahl Jorgensen and yours truly as regular contributors. The secretary of the English Section, Mrs Susanne Jackson, often assisted us in reading our tips. She issued more than 3,000 QSLs on these programmes! Unfortunately R Denmark ceased its broadcasting in foreign languages by the end of 1969. A Memory Card was issued and requested by 197 DX-listeners.

Second. From Oct 1987 till Sep 1994, the DX-Window continued as a printed newsletter, edited monthly or every second week with a total of 151 editions by the late German member, Bernhard Gruendl, and two Dutch members Hans van den Boogert and Wian Stienstra.

Third. From Feb 1996 til May 1999, Finn Krone and several other members as co-editors around the world on shift introduced the DX-Window as a free newsletter by e-mail, distributed by Claus Pedersen. A total of 168 editions were issued.

Fourth. When I retired in May 2001, the digital "DX-Window" was revived with edition no. 169 as a fortnightly newsletter issued to DSWCI-members at the same time as SWN changed from being published each month to every sixth week. This edition No. 350 is distributed to 168 DSWCI-members by e-mail. In addition several members read it in the Member Area at where our Swiss webmaster Rolf Wernli uploads it every time. Furthermore a summary of its content is used in DX-Mirror inShortwave News, edited by our Russian member Dmitry Mezin.

A Closer Look at DX Window

The DX-Window is a bi-weekly electronic newsletter made for members of the Danish Shortwave Club International. Its content is mainly based upon loggings and other information from our own members, but in a few cases extraordinary news from other DX-ers are included. Thus we depend on YOUR contributions which should be sent to the editor. Please use our format and add your last name in brackets after each item. All times are UTC and frequencies in kilohertz.

The DX-Window primarily deals with news and loggings of rare shortwave broadcasting stations, particularly domestic services. It must be news compared to our latest Domestic Broadcasting Survey. The editor is free to ”cut hard” and bring only the hottest items, he receives. Ordinary loggings mentioned in the latest edition of the DX-Window will normally not be mentioned next time. Because of that, please check the latest two editions when you are DX-ing!

Reproduction of single items from the DX-Window is allowed, provided that due credit is given to the contributor and to the DX-Window.

The DX-Window is distributed in three versions:

A) By e-mail as an attachment in rtf-format with all original graphics, or
B) as a large e-mail in .txt-format where the graphics may be missing, but with no attachment.
C) Can be downloaded from our website http://www.dswci.org/members/index.html .
You can get your copy changed to another version at any time, or unsubscribe, just by telling the distributor.

Loggings or schedules of regularly heard stations should NOT be sent to the DX Window. Such loggings can be sent to the SW tips editor Klaus-Dieter Scholz at logs@directbox.com . Schedules are welcomed by the editor of World News, Noel R. Green at http://www.dswci.org/members/contact/contact_noel.html
