VOA expands Creole service to Haiti

VOA's Creole Service Expands Hours, Adds FM frequency to Reach Quake Victims

VOA is providing earthquake victims with news and information in their own language Washington, D.C., January 14, 2010 – The Voice of America’s (VOA) Creole Service, reaching out to Haitian earthquake victims in their language, is ramping up the strength and frequency of emergency broadcasts to Haiti.

With Haiti’s communications infrastructure badly damaged, the VOA, the largest international broadcaster in Haiti, is providing listeners with news and information via a combination of shortwave, AM and satellite broadcasts.

“We’re doing everything we possibly can to reach people in Haiti who have a desperate need for information,” said Alberto Mascaro, chief of VOA’s Latin America Division.

He said Creole Service programming on shortwave and satellite radio has expanded from 1.5 hours daily to 5 hours. Programs now air at 7:30-8:30 am EST (1230-0130 UTC); 12:30-2:30 pm EST (1730-1930 UTC); 5:00-6:00 pm EST (2200-2300 UTC) and 8:00-9:00 pm EST (0100-0200 UTC). The evening programs can also be heard on 1180 AM from a transmitter and tower in Marathon, Florida, pre-empting Radio Marti at those times.

VOA is playing a leading role to help Haitians reach out to one another. A special call-in number – 1-202-205-9942, mailbox 42 – has been established for people to leave messages that will be broadcast to Haiti. Facebook and Twitter accounts have also been created in Creole.

VOA reporters are on the ground in Haiti, covering the international response to the disaster. Basic survival information, statements by President Obama and messages from Haitians living in the United States have been broadcast back to those dealing with the disaster.

Like other native Haitians living in the United States, VOA Creole staffers are still trying to confirm the status of their relatives on the island, according to Ronald Cesar, chief of the Creole Service.

VOA’s Creole Service reaches more than 50 percent of adult Haitians on a weekly basis. Up-to-date information is also available around the clock on www.VOANews.com/creole.

*** The State We're In - Midweek Edition ***

'North Korea: Police State, Prison State'

The world has reason to be nervous about the rogue nation and its nuclear programme. And people within the country also have reason to be scared - it has 154,000 political prisoners in six camps across the country, and its human rights record is atrocious. We speak to a former prisoner, and to a former prison guard about what they went through.

Jung Gwang Il spent three years in a North Korean labour camp. While the country is notoriously closed to outsiders, the camps themselves are barely known within the country. And not many people live to talk about their time in one. Jung Gwang Il tells Jonathan how he survived the camp and escaped to South Korea.

A prison guard's escape: An Myeong Chul was a prison guard for eight years. While there, he saw prisoners starved, executed and he even beat them himself -- believing that they were all enemies of the state. But when he learned that he himself could wind up in prison himself, he stole a truck and escaped to China. Now all he wants is for the Koreas to be united, and forgiveness for what he did.

The medium may be the message, but what is the environmental cost of that message? We find out as the stories on this week's show look at the impact of getting the word out there. Why is publishing a book so bad for the planet? Are new e-books any better? We also look at less conventional 'publishing' as we meet an environmental graffiti artist, who uses mud rather than toxic paints. And in India, a graffiti movement is not only cleaning up ugly areas, it's also teaching kids how to read.

Long music segment of repetitive indigenous drums accompanied by chanting/singing. Phone conversations to sign off, probably at 1600 (tuned away at 1545, but off by a check at 1602). If China continues to be off the air here, folks should have a decent chance to hear this station that is normally buried under CNR-1.(Ron Howard, CA/Cumbre DX)

5020 SIBC. Heard from 0717. At 0717 interference from Radio Rebelde was severe but thanks to the Perseus SDR's tunable passband and notching capability, decent audio could be captured under Rebelde's saturated audio covering 5015 to 5035. Highlights of this extended logging: At 1100 there was local news in English to 1109.5 and an SIBC ID by a woman at 1103. A request program hosted by a woman announcer in English and Pidgin followed woman with an Australian caller heard at 1123. The songs were very pleasant island instrumental and vocal pieces by seemingly local bands. At 1158 a woman announced an ID as, "Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Happy Isles" followed by closing announcements in English and the Solomon Island national anthem to 1200. Interference was nil to slight in this time period (SINPO 44544), but adjacant channel interference gradually worsened after 1130, presumably from 5030. From 1200, BBC programming took over to 1600 tune out. BBC News heard at 1200 with man and woman announcers. (Bruce Churchill, CA/Cumbre DX)

Suriname
4990, Radio Apintie, (presumed) 1025-1035. Very weak signal for male announcer in possible Dutch with comments. Weak signal. Unable to actually hear the language being spoken due to the signal's weakness. He continues to talk the entire period. (Chuck Bolland, FL)

Airline Passenger Who Helped Foil Terror Attack Speaks to VOA

Says still plans to fly, but will be 'even more vigilant'

Washington, D.C., January 8, 2010 – Alain Ghonda, a passenger on Northwest Flight 253, shared his personal account with the Voice of America (VOA) of how he and several others foiled the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day, 2009.

The majority of the flight was peaceful, Ghonda told VOA's Russian Service, until a loud cracking sound rang out.

"I was the first one to stand up. It was an explosion noise, some people were saying like a firecracker," Ghonda said. People stood up. When Ghonda saw smoke rising from a row of seats ahead of him, he said "I screamed 'There's fire! This is a terrorist!'"

Panic ensued as two other passengers jumped over their seats to put the fire out. As flight attendants sprayed the terror suspect with fire extinguishers, another passenger held him down. "They took him out of his seat, he had his pants half way down and I believe it was while he was mixing his materials to do the explosion," he said.

The entire incident lasted less than 10 minutes, said Ghonda.

He recalled seeing the suspect - 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab - before boarding the flight, which originated in Amsterdam.

"I saw him before going through security," which Ghonda says was not particularly tight. "I believe he used his cell phone, texting. There wasn't anything specific about him that would have prompted any attention," Ghonda told VOA.

After the plane landed, passengers waited for more than three hours while their luggage was inspected and interviews conducted.

"I'm going to fly still," Ghonda said. "But I'll be even more vigilant than I usually am. And I'm glad I usually don't sleep in the plane so this gives me a good reason not to sleep during the flight."

The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts more than 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 125 million people. Programs are produced in 45 languages and are intended exclusively for audiences outside of the United States. VOA is the leading U.S. international broadcaster.

Passport to Worldband Radio 2010 -Not
Larry Magne, posted this update to http://www.passband.com/ on November 28

Thanks for your many kind and helpful comments, which have touched us greatly.

Alas, although the long-term future of IBS' activities continues to be mulled over, there will definitely be no printed 2010 edition of Passport to World Band Radio. At this juncture it appears nearly as certain that online options aren't going to be feasible, either.

Nonetheless, the Japanese-language (only) Blue Pages for 2010 will be offered within Japan, as in the past, by ohtaket@kyp.biglobe.ne.jp later this year.

For equipment issues, Passport readers have increasingly been visiting Passport equipment maven David Zantow's webpage for up-to-date equipment news and expert advice. The URL is http://n9ewo.angelfire.com/ (worlddxclub/Contacxt Jan 2010)

Observations on QSLing

January Chat column
Edwin Southwell
The availability of current radio station handouts has been a recent topic in theses pages. For my part I have received schedule/handouts for the present season from Radio's Netherlands, Bulgaria, Kuwait and Taiwan International, which I suppose is not bad considering I don't report to stations seeking QSL cards all that often nowadays. However in 2009 my reports to Radio Prague requesting QSL cards of their steam train series, which were quite good, was a one off exception.

This goes to show that if a station puts itself about and comes up with a good theme and a good service then listening followed by reporting will increase. That may prove difficult for some stations as they have used their national treasurers as QSL card subjects long ago. Australia and African stations for instance have exhausted wild life and animal subjects and perhaps have not much else left. In east Europe portraits of 'national heroes' or drab buildings do not inspire one to write for a card. With an increase in listening a station needs to match this with inspiring and interesting programming to back the coverage of local news that's not reported abroad. On the down-side stations which have discontinued sending cards due to increased costs and no doubt a declining number of listeners are unlikely to change their minds and recommence this style of publicity.

Radio Sweden are the latest station to stop issuing schedules and sending out QSL cards, so if a person does not receive a schedule it is nothing to do with any suggested anything else as its up to the stations to decide whether to or not to printout and send schedules. I strongly support the view that we should concentrate on sending a station comment on programme content and presentation and I also add in doing so a report on the quality of rception saying it is good, fair, poor or difficult to hear due to co-channel interference but never do I include a request for a QSL card for any reply other than any future one-offs as with the rare exception to Radio Prague as mentioned above.

In having heard several mailbag programmes from a number of stations you may have heard many requests from listeners for QSL cards with some saying they never received a reply to their report. There was a time when requests for maps, stickers, pennants and t-shirts etc., were plentiful; sadly those days are long gone. When I first started listening to short wave in 1969 many stations sent out publicity in the form of pennants, stickers, t-shirts and tourist info. Today short wave stations concentrate on Africa, Asia and Latin America and big business sees that suitable sets are readily available in those countries. Shops in the UK no longer sell shortwave radios and as for asking about DRM you get a blank look.

Thus, if shops don't carry short wave radios how are new faces going to be attracted to the hobby? However, for us at World DX Club it's a case of writing to stations with comments on programming, content and the quality of reception to help keep them on the air. I never seem to see the logs or the QSL cards received by some who say they write regularly with or without success in the monthly column for that subject.

Finally, may I wish you all a Happy New Year and please make your resolution one of supplying some input to our magazine and not leave it to the regular few every month even if they are doing such a grand job. (ES 465)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
28 December 2009 - 03 January 2010

Solar activity was at very low levels during 28 December - 01 January. Solar activity increased to low levels on 02 - 03 January. Region 1039 (S29, L=052, class/area, Dso/220 on 03 January) produced numerous B- and C-class flares, the largest a C3.1/1f event at 02/2312Z. The region maintained a Beta magnetic configuration during its transit.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal background levels during the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during the entire period. Observations from the ACE spacecraft were consistent with the quiet geomagnetic conditions. During the period, solar wind speed varied between a low of 259 km/s at 31/1142Z to a high of 376 km/s at 28/0037Z as the density increased to a peak of 13 p/cc. The Bz component of the IMF ranged between + and -7 nT during the period, while density peaked at 9 p/cc near the end of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
06 January - 01 February 2010

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels for the entire forecast period. Isolated moderate activity is possible from 06 - 18 January with the return of old Region 1035 (N30, L=252).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal levels through the period.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly at quiet levels for the forecast period.

International broadcasters on Iran's 'seditious' list

Iran’s Intelligence Ministry has issued a list of some 60 US and international organizations and media outlets - including RFE/RL’s Radio Farda - that it accuses of backing “sedition” in Iran and playing a role in the post-election unrest. The list, carried yesterday by Iranian media, includes television networks and other media including Radio Farda, BBC, VOA, and Radio Zamaneh, which is based in the Netherlands.

An unspecified deputy intelligence minister for international affairs was quoted as having accused the organizations of working against the Iranian regime and being “examples of foreign subversive organizations.”

Other organizations include the Open Society Institute of U.S. philanthropist George Soros, Human Rights Watch (HRW), and Freedom House. The unnamed official added that contacts and cooperation with these organizations are banned.

Mint postage stamps of foreign countries can be purchased from Bill Plum's Airmail Postage and DX Supplies, 12 Glenn Road, Flemington, NJ 08822 USA.

Include a self-addressed-envelope for his current price list or request a price list via email at plumdx@msn.com . The prices represent Airmail rate to North America. Prices are subject to change without notice. No mimimum order via check, money order or credit card, but credit card orders under $ 15.00 will incur a $ 2.00 extra charge. Visa, MC, AMEX are accepted. Please include billing and shipping address for AMEX.

Don't forget the DX supplies include European Airmail envelopes (European Air Return and European Air Mailer). These envelopes are perfectly acceptable for mailing to ALL parts of the world, not just to Europe. Their size insures you that a 4"x6" DX QLSs will not come back to you folded which could happen if you used small U.S. sized airmail envelopes. Bill's European Air Return fits into a European Air Mailer without folding. These two envelopes and up to 5 QSL cards weigh less than one ounce. The European Air Return and 2 QSLs weigh less than 10 grams. All envelopes are sealed in plastic for protection. Envelopes are packed 100 per size per package. The 5-/50 Combo comes in one package.

Eyeball cards, stateside QSLing nesting envelopes, QSL Card Albums and pages are also sold.

I have used Bill's service for years and find his prices affordable and dependable. All stamps are enclosed within a glassine envelope, so no worries of stamps sticking to the letter, and you can enclose the stamps as is in the letter to the station.

Radio Netherlands Madagascar relay back on the air

We now have three transmitters back on the air following the fire at the RNW Madagascar relay station. The 50 kW transmitter was activated today. The fourth transmitter, a 250 kW ABB rig, has suffered some heat damage and must be repaired, which will take up to a week. Our Head of Distribution Jan Willem Drexhage says that the Dutch word for the damaged components is "hoogspanningsschakelaarbeveiligingselectronica" which he suggests would be a good word for Scrabble, at least if you're playing it in Dutch :-)

There have also been some changes to which broadcasts are assigned to which of the Philips transmitters. A revised schedule for all three transmitters, effectively immediately, is in the Media Network Weblog.

Blog Logs

the first edition of Blog Logs for 2010

All times UTC // parallel frequency *sign-on sign-off*

Belarus
6155, Radio Belarus,(presumed) 2340-2359. Noted a group of individuals - male and female - in Russian language conversation. Tried to find parallel's but wasn't able to. The signal on 7360 was in Portuguese and was religious. (Chuck, Bolland, FL)

Bolivia
5952.43, Emisoras Pio XII, 0005-0015. Very weak signal which hasn't faded in yet, Spanish language comments. Usually it's been my experience that this station fades in after 0100 UTC usually. (Chuck Bolland, FL)

Bulgaria
7400, Radio Bulgaria (Plovdiv). 0330-0343. English schedules to station ID with Happy New Year wishes to listeners. SW Listeners program with propagation forecasts and general shortwave news. Call for reception reports and ID at 0340. Into program about Bulgarian New Year’s customs. Fair. (Wood, TN).

Canada
9625, CBC (Sackville). 0426-0500. English. Very nice program entitled “Vinyl Tap” with host Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and BTO fame. Mx from the 1960-1970’s. Artist featured included: Tommy James, Ring Star, Paul McCartney, Janis Ian, Chicago, Yes, and many others. All of the music had a numbers theme. Many comments by Mr. Bachman about the music and his musical career. Very good signal (Wood, TN).

Clandestine
6045, Voice of the Tigers, (tentative) 0028-0100. Noted two males and sometimes a female in comments. The language listed is Tamil. At 0037 music presented which sounded very much like it had originated from South East Asia or India. Believe the area that this broadcast is concerned with is north of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, or maybe I got my countries mixed up?
Checking out an Atlas, I see the Tamil region listed on the southern tip of India at about 11 South and 78 East. Two men back at 0043 in conversation. Signal was poor to fair, but with all of the splatter and noise, it was difficult to glean anything significant. I don't know if the name of the station is correct (Voice of Tigers)? I seem to recall that the Tigers military was exterminated earlier in 2009? It's getting bad! Please go easy with the criticism if any of the above is wrong. Thanks. (Chuck Bolland, FL)

no problem Chuck, this blog will never criticise or humilitate our readers, ever ! thank you for your observations - GVH

4850, on several days have heard an open carrier here. Dec 30 from about 1310 till last check at 1530. Seems about the correct strength to be from AIR Kohima, but why no audio?

English sign off announcement with local ID as, "North Eastern Service of All India Radio broadcasting from Shillong" "The time now on the studio clock is a few seconds past 10 PM and with it we come to the end of the evening transmission.
