WMLK resumes work on radio station

The Engineer and his assistant have returned to Bethel to resume work on the WMLK Radio station. The picture shows one of three rectifiers that change the voltage from AC to DC. They will also be changing the frequency dynamics from 50 hZ to 60 hZ in the rectifier firing control circuitry.

The engineers that were with the unit before and after we bought this set didn’t think the frequency acceleration from 50 to 60 cps would make a difference, but it has! The European frequency is 50 hZ while the US standard is 60 hZ.

Shortwave Radiogram program schedules

Hello friends

There are a couple of changes to the Shortwave Radiogram transmission schedule.

Last Monday morning during the "red-eye" show at 0800-0830 UTC, I heard the usual Shortwave Radiogram on 5850 kHz, but there was some other content on 7780 kHz. Eventually, I found out that WRMI has added the Voice of Indonesia English service to its schedule, 0800-0900 UTC on 7780.

It's good that Voice of Indonesia can reach new audiences. But I will miss 7780 because it was a reliable pipeline at Australia and New Zealand. Jeff White at WRMI has offered Shortwave Radiogram 7780 UTC Friday 0530-0600 UTC. That might start tonight/tomorrow, so if you are near a radio at 0530 UTC, please tune in. (It might reach Europe, among other places.)

The schedule below reflects the transmission changes.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 281)  are provided by Darau Bl? in Lithuania and Scott in Ontario (both Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 282, 9-13 December 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:36  MFSK32: Program preview
2:44  MFSK32: Britain could be Chardonnay champions by 2050
7:09  MFSK64: Switch to farming led to the domestication of cats*
12:50  MFSK64: This week's images*
28:42  MFSK32: Closing announcements

BBC preparing to go online-only over next decade, says director general

Tim Davie outlines vision for a world of ‘infinite choice’ where broadcast TV and radio are being switched off

The BBC is preparing to shut down its traditional television and radio broadcasts as it becomes an online-only service over the next decade, according to the director general, Tim Davie.

“Imagine a world that is internet-only, where broadcast TV and radio are being switched off and choice is infinite,” he said. “A switch-off of broadcast will and should happen over time, and we should be active in planning for it.”

Davie said the BBC was committed to live broadcasting but Britons should prepare for the closure of many standalone channels and radio stations by the 2030s: “Over time this will mean fewer linear broadcast services and a more tailored joined-up online offer.”

For Immediate Release Friday, December 2, 2022

19th Edition of the Global Radio Guide (Winter 2022-23) Now Available

Small moves and gradual escalation.

Positioning resources so that at the perfect moment, a move can be made to ensure a swift victory.

This is no game of chess, this is the real-world and real-time tensions playing out in the Taiwan Straits every day.

With tensions between Taiwan and China on the rise, and with the Russian-Ukrainian war raging on, radio hobbyists are following the latest news from the front lines using shortwave broadcasts and various other radio services. You can hear these international events like the pros do, but you will need an accurate and comprehensive global radio guide to know where and when to tune in to the action.

That is where you can count on Gayle Van Horn’s (W4GVH) Amazon bestselling Global Radio Guide (now in its 19th edition for the Winter of 2022-23) as it has all of the details you need to catch up with the latest from these and other hotspots around the world.

As one of the only remaining publications available with international broadcast frequencies and schedules, the Global Radio Guide (GRG) puts everything a radio enthusiast needs to navigate the action right in their hands.

In this completely updated edition, regular GRG contributor Fred Waterer (also of The Spectrum Monitor) post features on monitoring the international broadcasters at the very forefront of the events.  Larry Van Horn, N5FPW, adds his detailed information on monitoring of utilities on the shortwave bands, including military communications.

With the help of the GRG, you can tune in shortwave broadcast stations from additional hotspots such as  Cuba, India, Iran, North/South Korea, and many other counties. If you have a shortwave radio receiver, SDR or Internet connection, pair it with this unique radio resource to know when and where to listen to the world.

This newest edition of the GRG carries on the tradition of those before it with an in-depth, 24-hour station/frequency guide with schedules for selected AM band, longwave, and shortwave radio stations. This unique resource is the only radio publication that lists by-hour schedules that include all language services, frequencies, and world target areas for over 500 stations worldwide.

The GRG includes listings of DX radio programs and Internet website addresses for many of the stations in the book. There are also entries for time and frequency stations as well as some of the more “intriguing” transmissions one can find on the shortwave radio bands.

In addition to the global hotspots, the GRG brings the world to you from other places on the radio dial.

It’s not just the shortwave bands heating up, mediumwave DXing has seen a surge in popularity in recent years as well.  For those DXing the lower bands, DX Central’s Loyd Van Horn, W4LVH, breaks down the basics of getting started with mediumwave DX and even gives us a fun summer project does a deep dive into everything you need to know when purchasing a portable radio for AM DX.  While SDRs are taking over, portable radios remain popular and highly successful options for the mediumwave DXer and Loyd can help you sort through the specs and stats to find your next radio!

Whether you monitor shortwave radio broadcasts, mediumwave, amateur radio operators, or aeronautical, maritime, government, or military communications in the HF radio spectrum, this book has the information you need to help you to hear it all. Teak Publishing’s Global Radio Guide "brings the world to you."

You can find this edition of the Global Radio Guide, along with all of our titles currently available for purchase, on the Teak Publishing Web site at www.teakpublishing.com.  Details will be available at www.teakpublishing.com.

Pop Shop Radio, Canada's International Voice of Shortwave

From the Town of Hope in super, natural

British Columbia in Canada:

We are Pop Shop Radio!

Canada's International Voice on Shortwave

Pop Shop Radio goes around the world to bring you great stuff from all over. We play a whole variety of pop music, such as records from the 1960s and 1970s that were played on Top-40 radio stations not only in North America but also on offshore radio and stations like Radio Luxembourg. To make it fun, we also include stuff that didn't make the Top 10 and even reach back into the 1930s to the 1950s to dig up great sounds at 45 and 78 RPM. We like to show that music doesn't have to be in English to be great. Stopping off in places like Sweden, Finland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Germany, France, Brazil, South Africa, Singapore, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand we find cool records for you to groove to! We mix it all in the style of Top-40 radio of the 1960s and 1970s with jingles and real records played by a real DJ. We are everything that the boring FM corporate stations that have no personality and say they play the best variety are not. Last, but not least, Pop Shop Radio is made in the town of Hope in (super, natural) British Columbia in Canada.

Check out our menu to find out how and when to listen to us on shortwave, an archive of our past shows, a map of where our listeners live and our newsletter.

No Earth-directed CME signatures were detected during the period.

No proton events were observed in geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 28 Nov and high levels on 29-30 Nov and 01-04 Dec. A peak flux of 17,351 pfu was observed at 03/1740 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity generally ranged from unsettled to active levels throughout the period. Minor storm levels (G1-Minor) were observed on 28-30 Nov and 01 Dec. The field was under the influence of a pair of positive polarity CH HSSs.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 December - 31 December 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares are possible on 05-13 Dec and 18-31 Dec due to current and returning M-class producing regions.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 05-08 Dec and 24-31 Dec due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 07-09 Dec, 17-18 Dec and 22-31 Dec with G1 (Minor) storm levels expected on 22 Dec and 25-28 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS effects.
