Radio Netherlands Program Guide - Sept. 12-18

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 12 September
*** The State We're In ***

A swine flu survivor tells us about the disease, and the affect it had on her relationships. And why a Registered Nurse in the US state of Virginia hopes she

catches the disease - in spite of the traumatic cases she's experienced in her work.

In 'The Right to Complain' a British philosopher discusses with Jonathan what constitutes a complaint, right and wrong complaints, and how complaints and

protests can lead to positive social change. We hear how an Indonesian housewife is jailed for complaining. And one of the 1000 protesters who staged a

protest near the White House in 2002 to protest against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, tells Jonathan why protest is so necessary in a
democracy.

Canadian writer Hal Niedzviecki explains how, after years of resistance, he has come to accept the fact that he is a master 'kvetcher'.

Israel's biggest and most controversial pop star Aviv Geffen discusses why he thinks music can be more powerful than politics and he tells us about the

moment that changed his life - when he was standing next to the Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin when he was assassinated in 1995.

*** Earthbeat (primary programme) ***

Safety in our cities. More and more of us live in urban environments and fear of crime is driving some to ever greater security measures. We hear from

residents of a gated community in South Africa, who say the dogs, walls and security guards help them to sleep at night.

But several experts say that as we build our environment, we are building in a climate of fear, and if people perceive crime to be a problem, bizarrely, this

makes them more likely to become a victim of crime. We also look at success stories -communities who have built their way out of social problems.
