World Radio Day set for 13 February

 

Set your calendar - World Radio Day is right around the corner. The annual event is noted as the most "trusted media in the world", according to different international reports. This year's theme is devoted to "Radio and Trust.'

 This year's special radio event is scheduled on 13 February, with a special broadcast from Germany's Channel 292 station.

The Swedish DX Association will participate in the celebration of shortwave, including a number of interviews with well-known personalities from the Swedish DX radio scene, brief program features, and music. The program is being produced by Göran Lindemark. 

The special broadcast will air 1200-1300 UTC on 9670 kHz, with a repeat 1600-1700 UTC on 6070 kHz.

Brazil's Radio Casa welcomes listeners

 


Radio Casa, noted by European DXers as a 'pirate,' broadcasts international and Brazilian music 24 hours from the city of Amparo, São Paulo state. Frequencies are 5900 kW (500 kW), 7455 kHz (300 kW) and 8000 (13 kW).

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 January - 06 February 2022

Solar activity was at low levels with many C-class flares observed. The largest flare of the period was a C9 at 01/2236 UTC from Region 2939 (S16, L=32, class/area Dho/300 on 02 Feb). Region 2939 also produced a long-duration C3/Sf flare at 06/1341 UTC. Filament
structure suspended above the region, approximately 10 degrees long and centered near S20W05 at the time of the event, lifted-off during the flare. The event was subsequently detected in LASCO C2 beginning at around 06/1436 UTC, and is predicted to hit Earth. Initial analysis determined 10 Feb to be the likely timing to arrive at Earth. Regions 2936 (N17, L=116, class/area Ehi/750 on 31 Jan) 2940 (N17, L=35, class/area Dao/320 no 02 Feb), and 2941 (N24, L=340, class/area Eho/300 on 05 Feb) also contributed several C-class flares each. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 31 Jan, 01 Feb due to influences from a CH HSS. High levels were also observed on 04-06 Feb due to influences from a CME. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 02-03 Feb. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached G1 (Minor) storm levels on 03-04 Feb due to impacts from a CME that left the Sun on 29 Jan. Active levels were reached late on 01 Feb and 02 Feb due to arrival of the aforementioned CME. Active levels were also reached early on 06 Feb due to influences from a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 31 Jan and 05 Feb. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 February - 05 March 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels, with a slight chance for M-class flares on 07-11 Feb due to the flare potential of Regions 2940 and 2941. Very low to low levels are expected on 12 Feb
- 05 Mar. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 07-20 Feb, and 27 Feb - 05 Mar due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 21- 26 Feb. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at G1 (Minor) storm levels on 10-11 Feb due to the anticipated arrival of an assymetric full halo CME that left the Sun on 06 Feb. G1 levels are also expected on 13-14 Feb due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Active
levels are expected on 18, 25 Feb, and 03, 05 Mar due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on the remaining days in the highlight period.

Radio Andorra special broadcast set for February 5

 


The next Radio Andorra Broadcast single day broadcast on 5 February 2022. According to BDXC, programming will be a replay from 1979 programming, dedicated to singer Daniel Balavoine. February 5, is the 70th anniversary of Daniel Balavoine's birth date.

Voice of America adds new program, Rohingya Lifeline

 


According to a report from BDXC February DX News-Short Wave column, Voice of America has begun a new program on shortwave. The new Rohingya language program entitled Rohingya Lifeline, is broadcast to address the informational needs of Muslim refugees, who have fled to Myanmar, and now are living in refugee camps in nearby Bangladesh.

The new program is Monday-Friday at 1130-1200 UTC on 12030 via Philippines relay, and two frequencies relayed from Thailand on 12125 and 15715 kHz.

WBCQ testing February 1-5

 


Special thanks to Bill Tilford and The SWLing Post blog, for the following information.


That’s not a typo, in addition to its flagship frequency 7490 kHz, WBCQ will be running staggered propagation tests of 4790 kHz during February for a new entertainment program block sponsored by Angela and Allan Weiner and curated by Uncle Bill Tilford.  

When the regular schedule begins in March, it will be two hours per night of music and other entertainment from around the world. Several new programs under development will participate. The February tests will use archival episodes of From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot, Marion’s Attic, Behavior Night, Rock Wave, Tom Call Theater, and Jetzt Geht’s Los!, a wonderful program from Germany of Weimar-era jazz. In March these programs will be joined by several new ones from around the world.

The first week’s tests will run from February 1-5 from 6-8pm EST (2300-0100 UTC).  Each following week will run an hour later to determine optimum transmission times.  An e-QSL will be available for reception reports sent to 4790info@gmail.com.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 January 2022

Solar activity reached moderate levels due to a long duration M1  flare observed at 29/2332 UTC from Region 2936 (N17, L=116, class/area Ekc/720 on 30 Jan). Associated with this event was a 10cm (320 sfu) radio event and asymmetric full halo CME, first visible in LASCO C2 imagery at 29/2336 UTC. Forecaster analysis/WSA Enlil modeling determined this CME to arrive at Earth late on 01 Feb. Region 2936 also produced numerous (31) C-class flares. Regions 2939 (S15, L=37, class/area Cso/120 on 30 Jan) and 2940 (N17, L=37, class/area are unknown due to foreshortening at the east limb) also produced C-class activity during the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit during the highlight period. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 24 Jan due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 25-30 Jan. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 28-29 Jan due to influences from a positive polarity CH HSS. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 24-27, and 30 Jan. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 January - 26 February 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels, with a chance for isolated M-class flares on 31 Jan - 05 Feb due to the flare potential from Region 2936 (N17, L=116, class/area Ekc/720 on 30 Jan). Very low to low levels are expected on 06-26 Feb as Region 2936 rotates to the far side of the disk. 

There is a slight chance for a proton event at geosynchronous orbit while Region 2936 is on the visible disk (31 Jan - 05 Feb). No proton events are otherwise expected during the outlook period. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 03-05 Feb, 12-14 Feb, and 18-20 Feb all due to influences from recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels on 02 Feb due to the anticipated arrival of the full halo CME from 29 Jan. Active to G1 levels are expected on 05 Feb due to influences from a recurrent CH HSS. Active levels are expected on 06, 10, 18, and 25 Feb all due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on the remaining days of the period.

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedule

 


Hello friends

Last week, we again experimented with multipath reception. I received the example below during the Friday 1300-1330 UTC broadcast, using an SDR in South Australia. Because the signal on 15770 kHz from WRMI Florida reached South Australia with about the same signal level short path (16000 km) versus long path (24000 km), very little text was decoded, including none of the MFSK image headers, I had to "graft" a good header from the studio recording. The result is a blue triangle provided to us by Roger in Germany. The short-path diamond is on the left, the long-path diamond on the right. This is because the lines in the image "paint" from left to right. The short-path and the long-path were received 26 milliseconds apart. The thicker blue segment in the middle is where the SP and LP overlapped,  

Analysis of the image above is provided by Roger. Roger also received a dramatic multipath example during the Saturday 1330-1400 UTC broadcast, using an SDR in New Zealand.

The medium wave transmitter of Army FM, the radio station of the Ukrainian army, has been testing from 26 December 2021 on 810 kHz. 10 kW, using a 190-meter high mast, owned by Telemerezhi Ukrainy LLC, located at Terikonna Street in Hirmyk near Donetsk

 Армія FM begins in Ukraine

BCDX has also reported that the Ukrainian Ministry Defence radio station Aрмія FM (Army FM) has received a one-year approval to broadcast on 810 kHz with 10 kW. The National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine granted the permit for a temporary period.

 A schedule was not included, but the information did state that programming will air from Hirnyk, located west of Donetsk. This is likely due to the pro-Russian separatists occupying this area.

Washington DC AM Station WCRW, drops Chinese programming

 

Report: Washington DC AM Station Drops Chinese Programming Following Scrutiny

WCRW Washington, DC (1190 kHz) has stopped airing programming from China Radio International after station ownership came under scrutiny, including for a $100,000 small business loan it received during the pandemic. “We are no longer carrying Chinese content," Brian Lane, co-owner of the Potomac Radio Group, told the Washington Examiner. "We are changing to a time brokerage station that will carry various programming, including Spanish programming.”

A Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing made by Potomac in December, cited by the Examiner, named China Global Television Network (CGTN) as the “foreign principal” for Potomac. As the filing explicitly states, CGTN “is under the control” of the China Communist Party’s Publicity Department. Potomac said it had been paid nearly $4.4 million in programming fees by CGTN and CCP-affiliated China Radio International from 2019 to 2021.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 January 2022

Solar activity ranged from very low to high levels during the period. Low levels were observed on 17 Jan with 3 C-class flares observed from Region 2930 (N21, L=324, class/area Dao/230 on 18 Jan). Activity increased to moderate levels (R1-Minor) radio blackouts as Region 2929 (N08, L=321, class/area Dki/310 on 16 Jan) produced am M1/Sf at 18/1744 UTC. Associated with this event were Type II (143 km/s shock velocity), Type IV and 10cm (150 sfu) radio events. This event generated a non-Earth-directed CME. C-class activity was also observed from Region 2930. Low levels returned on 19 Jan with a C1 flare observed from Region 2929. 

High levels were observed on 20 Jan as Region 2929 produced an M5/!f (R2-Moderate) radio blackouts at 20/0601 UTC. Associated with this event were Type II ( 329 km/s shock velocity), Type IV, and 10cm (350 sfu) radio events, along with a Caselli U radio signature. This event also generated a non-Earth-directed CME. Very low levels returned on 21-23 Jan. Of note was a long duration B4 event at 21/1016 UTC with an associated CME. During this timeframe, a disappearing filament was observed lifting off near Region 2934 (S24, L=172, class/area Hsx/140 on 21 Jan). This CME was analyzed to have a potential glancing blow at Earth late on 24 Jan. On 22 Jan, another CME was observed at 22/1036 UTC associated with a disappearing filament located near N28E18. This CME was also
analyzed to have a potential glancing blow at Earth on 26 January. 

An S1 (Minor) solar radiation storm 10 Mev proton event was observed at geosynchronous orbit on 20 Jan associated with the M5 flare mentioned earlier in this report. The event reached a maximum flux of 22.7 pfu at 20/1015 UTC. A 100 MeV proton event was also observed at geosynchronous orbit on 20 Jan associated with the M5 flare. This event reached a maximum flux of 1.1 pfu at 20/0850 UTC. No other proton events were observed during the period. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels through the entire period with a maximum flux of 6,130 pfu observed at 23/1620 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quite to unsettled levels on 17-20 Jan due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Active to G1 (minor) storm levels were also observed on 18 Jan and active to G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels were observed on 19 Jan due to
possible embedded transients from CME activity on 14 and 15 Jan. Quiet to unsettled activity was observed on 21-23 Jan due to a sustained negative Bz component. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 January - 19 February 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels on 24 Jan - 02 Feb and 17-19 Feb. Very low to low levels, with a slight chance for R1 (Minor) radio blackouts, is expected on 03-16 Feb due to the return of old active region 2929 (N08, L=321). 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 24-26 Jan and 12-19 Feb due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 27-31 Jan and 01-11 Feb. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levles on 24-27 Jan due to positive polarity CH HSS coupled with possible transient passage from the 21 and 22 Jan CME activity. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 04-05 and 10-12 Feb due to negative polarity CH HSS activity.

Shortwave Radiogram, Saturday-Sunday schedules

 

Hello friends

For days, the weather forecasters were warning us that two inches of snow would arrive here in the Washington DC area during the Thursday morning commute. Two inches may not seem like much if your are used to real snowfalls, but it's enough to create chaos on the roads here. The local school system canceled classes the night before the forecast weather event. So Thursday morning arrives and ... nothing. Just a bit of rain. Snow is a reluctant visitor to the Washington DC area.

We did get the un-fun part of winter, today: The temperatures dropped. But at least there was no snow, so I was able to repair my two wire antennas.

Last weekend I transmitted an image with two red stripes on a dark blue background. (It could be a nice flag for an emerging republic.) I was hoping the stripes would show the effects of multipath reception. Multipath is sometimes seen if one lives close to the transmitter site. The short skip-zone signal can be weak enough that the signal coming the long way around Earth is also received, creating the echo sound and the fascinating ghosting of the images. The stripes looked like this to Al in northern Florida,14 January 2022, 1300-1330 UTC, 15770 kHz from WRMI Okeechobee, farther south in Florida.

This weekend, to detect any multipath we'll try a blue diamond, recommended by our expert Roger in Germany.

Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. New clandestine statio, Mizzima Radio on shortwave

 MIZZIMA RADIO

A new clandestine station began broadcasts on shortwave around January 1. The station is called Mizzima Radio and is on the air on a daily basis via the Encompass DM transmitter at Dhabayya, United Arab Emirates.

Here is my logbook note from yesterday, January 11:

17730  U.A.E.  Mizzima Radio - ENC Al Dhabayya. S-on 11.59 UT with introductory music, a clear ID, and welcoming announcements in Burmese at 12.00 UTC, news at 12.02 UTC, and music at 12.16 UTC to introduce a commentary program. Good signal except for some slight carrier hum, Jan 11., the 23rd-anniversary logo for Mizzima Media.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 - 16 January 2022

Solar activity ranged from very low to isolated moderate levels. Very low to low levels were observed on 10-13 Jan with weak C-class events observed from beyond the NE limb. An isolated R1 (Minor) radio blackout event was observed from beyond the NE limb at 14/0203 UTC that peaked at M1. Additional weak C-class activity was observed from this same unnumbered region on 14 Jan. Region 2925 (S34, L=008, class/area Dso/240 on 05 Jan) produced a C4/1f at 14/1334 UTC. An associated CME was observed off the SW limb with a potential glancing blow expected at Earth on 17 Jan. Low-level activity was observed on 15 Jan from Region 2924 (S31, L=038, class/area Ehi/430 on 08 Jan) and Region 2932 (N31, L=245, class/area Cro/020 on 15 Jan). 16 Jan witnessed additional C-class activity from Region 2930 (N20, L=320, class/area Dso/100 on 16 Jan) and an LDE C2/Sf from Region 2929. No additional Earth-directed CMEs were observed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. However, there was a weak enhancement to 1.7 pfu observed at 15/2115 UTC, possibly associated with shock passage from the 14 Jan CME. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was was at moderate levels on 10-15 Jan and at high levels on 16 Jan with a maximum flux of 2,280 pfu observed at 16/1910 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels on 10 Jan through midday on 14 Jan. By midday to late on 14 Jan, activity increased to unsettled to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels due to a CIR in advance of a negative polarity CH HSS. Embedded in this activity was a possibly transient from an earlier, undetected CME. Activity levels remained enhanced to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 15-16 Jan due to continued negative polarity CH HSS effects. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 January - 12 February 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels, with a slight chance for R1 (Minor) radio blackouts, on 17-21 Jan due to the complexity of Region 2929. Very low to low levels are expected on 22 Jan - 02 Feb. Very low to low levels, with a slight chance for R1 (Minor) radio blackouts, is expected on 03-12 Feb with the potential return of old Region 2929. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 17-23 Jan and again on 12 Feb due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 24 Jan - 11 Feb. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled levels on 18, 24-26, 28-30 Jan, 05, 10 and 12 Feb, with active levels expected on 17 Jan, 04, and 11 Feb, all due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Weekend schedule for Shortwave Radiogram

 

Hello friends

Another shortwave program is transmitting text and images. Pop Shop Radio from Hope, British Columbia, is including some MFSK32 text in each show. I have added their schedule and contact information to the list below.

Please encourage other shortwave broadcasters to try text and images on their broadcasts. Explain to them how easy it is to encode and decode the content. Tell them to get in touch with me if they have questions.

Another reminder:  Shortwave Radiogram has a new transmission, Tuesday 1530-1600 UTC, 9955 kHz from WRMI Florida. The frequency is directed to Latin America but is heard well enough for our digital modes. On January 11, I heard this broadcast with a good signal via an SDR in upper Alberta (3900 km), and easily decoded it.

Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Thursdays 0000 UTC (Wednesdays 7 pm EST) on 3536 kHz USB.

Channel 292 plans special pirate broadcast on January 15, 2022


 

The special broadcast from Germany's Channel 292, will be in memory of Radio Pirate Dr. Tim.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity  03 - 09 January 2022

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period. C-class activity was observed on 06-07 Jan from Region 2924 (S31, L=038, class/area Ehi/430 on 08 Jan). The largest of these events was a C2 flare observed at 07/2210 UTC. The remaining regions were
unremarkable and quiet. Late on 09 Jan, Type II (575 km/s S.V.) and Type IV radio emissions were observed, most likely associated with CME activity at or behind the NE limb. No other activity was observed during the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 08 Jan with a maximum flux of 2,655 pfu obseved at 08/1805 UTC. Moderate levels were observed on 03-07 Jan and 09 Jan. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to GI (Minor) storm levels. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 03-04 Jan, with active periods on 04 Jan, due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet levels persisted on 05 Jan through late on 08 Jan. G1 (Minor) storm levels were observed late on 08 Jan due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 09 Jan as CH HSS influence slowly waned. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 January - 05 February 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels through the outlook period. A slight chance to a chance for M-class flare activity (R1-R2, Minor to Moderate) is possible on 10-29 Jan due to the return of old Regions 2916 and 2918. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 19-23 Jan due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Moderate levels are expected on 10-18 Jan, 24 -31 Jan and 01-05 Feb. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled levels on 10, 16-18, 23-26, 28-30 Jan and 04-05 Feb with active levels expected on 17 Jan and 04 Feb, all due to recurrent CH HSS activity.
