A cold-war stalwart goes out of fashion

TWIDDLE the dial of a short-wave radio and you never know what you will get. Through the hiss of static you may hear Cuban propaganda, football from Brazil or Chinese opera. Unlike other radio broadcasts, short-wave transmissions, bouncing off the ionosphere, can connect any two points on earth. One hazard is physics: signals wane and wax during the day. Another is governments. In the cold war communist regimes jammed Western stations. Now the threat is budget cuts.

On June 24th the state-funded Radio Canada International (RCI) ended its short-wave broadcasts and went online only. On June 29th Radio Netherlands did the same. Wojtek Gwiazda of the RCI Action Committee, a ginger group, says politicians think short-wave sounds an old-fashioned way to spend taxpayers’ money.

Radio Northern Star slated for test broadcast

Via Svenn Martinsen on Facebook: Test transmission from Radio Northern Star on Shortwave.

Starting on Friday July 6th 0330 UTC/GMT (0530 Norwegian Time/CET) Radio Nord Revival in Sweden will be relaying the programmes of Radio Northern Star in a long test transmission on Shortwave 5895 kHz in the 49 meter band with a power of 10 kW. The test will last until Saturday morning July 7th. We welcome written reception reports to Radio Northern Star, Box 100, N5331 RONG, NORWAY. Email may also be used: 1000@northernstar.no .

For listeners outside Scandinavia we would also like recordings of the transmission, but please do not send large files as attachments to emails. If you want to send large files, send them on a CD to the address above. Be sure to include return postage if you'd like regular mail replies. Correct reports will be answered by QSL letter.

AWR 41st Year Annual Contest

"Listen to Adventist World Radio"

As Adventist World Radio enters into its 41st year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual “Wavescan” DX contest, which comes to you under the title, “Listen to AWR”. In short, you are invited to listen to as many different AWR shortwave locations as possible during the month of July 2012.

Here are the details of our 2012 “Listen to AWR” DX Contest:-

A. AWR Shortwave Locations

You are invited to listen to as many shortwave locations in use by Adventist World Radio as possible during the month of July 2012. You may listen to the broadcasts from the AWR station KSDA on the island of Guam, and to any and all of the shortwave relay stations that carry programming from Adventist World Radio. Remember also that the AWR DX program, “Wavescan” is on the air shortwave over several of the stations in the regular AWR network, and also from shortwave stations WRMI & WWCR in the United States.

In due course, you will be able to obtain the July scheduling of Adventist World Radio, and the relay stations in use at the time, from the AWR website on the internet, from contemporary radio bulletins, from the World Radio TV Handbook, and from other reliable information sources.

B. Prepare Reception Reports

You are invited to prepare just one reception report for any AWR transmission from each AWR transmitter site in any country that you are able to log during the month of July 2012. You may report any AWR broadcast on any shortwave frequency, at any time of the day or night, and in any language; just one reception report for each AWR shortwave location.


C. Photocopies

You are invited to search your QSL collection, and where possible, provide a photocopy of a QSL that you already hold in your collection from any of the AWR shortwave stations that you have heard, during the past five years only. These photocopies should be in color if possible, but black & white is also acceptable. If you do not already have a QSL from any of the AWR stations you select, then you should state so in your contest entry.

D. Three Radio Cards

Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry. These cards may be old or new, and they may be QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc. (Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.)

E. Assemble Your Contest Entry

Post your entry with all items to Adventist World Radio in Indianapolis, remembering that the total number of AWR transmitter locations you hear, and neatness and preparation, will all feature in the judging procedure. Due consideration will also be given to the area of the world in which the contestant lives.

This contest will run through the month of July 2012, and all contest entries should be postmarked at your local post office anywhere in the world on any date up to the end of the month of July, and they should be received at the AWR post office address in Indianapolis no later than the end of the month of August 2012.

Return postage in the form of currency notes in any international currency, or mint postage stamps, or IRC coupons would be welcome. Where possible, a self addressed return envelope, business size or half quarto size, would also be welcome.

The awards for this year’s 2012 contest will be similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2013 for each continental winner. In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.

You can remember that all AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card. Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2013, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.

Countdown to Field Day 2012

Don't forget to mark Saturday, June 23rd on your DX calendar. Amateur radio operators in the U.S. and Canada will be on the air to celebrate Field Day, a 24 hour period of making as many radio contacts as possible. The club field day operations are usually excellent verifiers. Many shortwave listeners work all 50 states and Canadian provinces during an ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Field Day weekend. Note the call sign, frequency, time, date and who they worked, and the reception quality description. Include a self-addressed-stamped-envelope with your details. Searchable calls for postal address info should go to www.qrz.com . Consult the ARRL website at www.arrl.org for upcoming news and rules about Amateur Radio Field Day.

Tens of thousands of Amateur Radio operators will be firing up portable radio stations from unexpected locations this weekend for ARRL Field Day. On June 23-24, over 35,000 hams are expected to operate from parks, malls, schools and. yes, fields, around the country.

Field Day is the climax of the week-long Amateur Radio Week sponsored by the ARRL. As of June 19, 21 states have issued proclamations thanking and supporting the hams for their community service work, and more are expected to do so.

Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula was shocked at how Africa was portrayed in a ballet that was intended to become the only negro ballet in history.

The ballet “The Creation of the World” (La création du monde) was composed in France in 1923, just after World War I to announce a new dawn, after so much death and destruction.

Faustin decided to reconstruct this ballet, in an attempt he says, to remember his name.

4850, AIR Kohima, 0315 UTC, May 30. (AIR) is now on in the morning. This transmitter was off the air last several months.
English news followed by ID: "AIR Kohima". Then program broadcast in regional language. (Mondal via Chakroborty and Goswami). The transmitter has been repaired and will be on the air with regular programs. They are interested in feedback from shortwavelisteners, please post your observations in DX-India. Heard at *1401-1635, Jun 08, a German HCJB program. At 1500 an ann mentioning the transmission is coming from Kall. 1627 female in Platt Deutsch giving the address of SW-Radio, Postfach 8025, 32736 Detmold.1629 male German ann a testtransmission of HCJB from Kall. Russian HCJB program starting at 1630. But these programs must originate fom Weenermoor. Moderate at 1401, while excellent reception at 1630. (Van Arnhem). Noted with very strong signal here at 2020, Jun 08, carrying HCJB in German, switching to HCJB in Russian at 2030.

The audio modulation sounds much more punchy and compressed that it did from Kall. (Kenny). Heard the German service at 2115, Jun 08, booming signal of 9+10 dB here in Goettingen. Around 2130 ann for test transmission coming from Classic Broadcast in Kall. Then into another religious program in German. (Kuhl in DXplorer). I still have a good readable S6-signal now at 0810, Jun 09. German program. Distance from Goettingen is around 250 kms. (Kuhl in DXplorer). Heard very weak at noon in Copenhagen at 0957-1103, Sa Jun 09, religious hymns and talk in unidentified language, 25121. (Petersen).

Station ann are annoying at present, still the Kall-Krekel transmitter site is mentioned, but Horst Rosiak at HCJB Quito will start recording some new station / program ann soon, regarding new Weenermoor transmitter site. Urban Radio from New Caledonia

Join us from Monday, June 25 2012 to explore the world of breakfast radio on several of the few local FM radio stations in Noumea on the Mailbox program from Radio New Zealand International.

With a population of some 165,000, Noumea is one of the most European and largest urban areas in the Pacific islands.

This is not just the Pacific of golden beaches, swaying palm trees and the gentle roar of the distant surf. This is also high population density, traffic jams, shopping malls, and six radio stations competing for listeners in a tense political atmosphere.

You can listen directly via shortwave radio from RNZI in New Zealand, or audio on demand [for the following month] with full details of current broadcast frequencies [both DRM and analog] and times possible for your area as well as audio downloads at www.rnzi.com .

We'll take you to the home of breakfast radio personalities Gege at Oceane FM, Robert Canal at Radio Rhythme Bleu, and JB at NRJ.... as well as introduce you to Radio Djiido, Nouvelle Caledonie Premiere and Radio O.... and tell you how you can join them all for breakfast!

New Caledonia has blocked the airwaves to new stations for many years, and of these six, two are owned by the French government, one is part of a French commercial network, one has close connections with another French network, and just one fully serves the local Kanak people.

Local listeners are denied the wide range of stations, formats and viewpoints found on the mainland, but this strange situation reflects local politics as New Caledonia struggles to find a way forward that satisfies those for and against independence from France.

Each of the stations featured has a well designed website, usually a good Facebook page, and wonderful coverage maps to download and print as souvenirs of your visit to Noumea, the Riviera of the South Pacific.

15435, BSKSA/Call of Islam 1508-1545 tune-out. Male's Arabic call. Weaker (SIO 322) on // 15255 kHz. Very weak Qu'ran programming on 17615 at 1615. Call of Islam programming observed again on 15435 audible (SIO 443)at 1645 recheck. Quality improved as SIO 443. BSKSA/First General Program audible in Arabic at 1655 check, noted running // with 15435 kHz, though considerably weaker. Time signal beeps at 1700 on 15435 with Arabic station ID and fanfare trumpets to brief Arabic news items. Return to Call of Islam programming at 1704,noted on weaker // 15255 to 1756 sign-off with ID or anthem. Rechecks next day (6/20) at 1732, BSKSA/First General Program on 15225. Mid-winter special broadcast set for British Antarctic Survey

Welcome to mid-winter day in Antarctica ! Antarctic winterers from over 30 nations will celebrate the shortest day in Antarctica (June 20) after which the days start to slowly get longer and lighter. For many winterers, this will come as a relief as they have endured freezing temperatures as cold as −30°C, extremely high winds and nearly permanent darkness as the Sun has not risen from the horizon since mid May.

Traditional greetings and photographs are being shared between the research stations on the frozen continent and British Antarctic Survey staff will mark the day by exchanging handmade presents with their fellow winterers. Midwinter’s Day is the equivalent of Christmas Day for many as Christmas is typically just another working day during the very short summer season.

To commemorate this special event there will be a British Antarctic Survey Special to the staff. The broadcast day has not been confirmed, but is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (June 20-22, 2012) as;
