Radio Netherlands program preview March 3- 9

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 3 MARCH

*** Weekend Connection ***

Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.

It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all!

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1000 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1200 (Eastern N America), 1400 & 1530 (South Asia), 1800, 1930 & 2030 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0500 (Western N America)

*** Vox Humana ***

"Little Fish in a Multi-culti Pond"

A short tram ride from the centre of Amsterdam is a neighbourhood called the Baarsjes, or "little fish" (specifically perch). One-and-a-half square kilometres houses 35,000 residents from 126 countries. Such multicultural diversity in such a small area has not been without serious problems. A recent study revealed a high percentage of Muslims and homosexuals experienced discrimination in the neighbourhood.

But residents believe they can make a difference by taking initiatives to bring these diverse communities together. Producer David Swatling has lived in the Baarsjes for twelve years. He takes to the streets of his neighbourhood to find out just how much is changing for the "Little Fish in a Multi-culti Pond".

The programme begins this year's Global Perspective series where eight international broadcasters contribute a documentary feature on the theme Belief.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1227 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0527 (Western N America)

SUNDAY 4 MARCH

*** Amsterdam Forum ***

World leaders are not doing enough to fight corruption and bad governance - that's the view of this week's guest Dr Kumi Naidoo.

Dr Naidoo was an activist in apartheid South Africa as a teenager and is now a driving force behind the civil rights movement. He believes the African continent has a long way to go when it comes to establishing democratic governance, a task made harder when African nations see double standards in the very countries holding them accountable.

He says the West, in particular Britain and the US, should also practise what they preach. So what's the way forward for a democratic Africa and how can respect be gained for the West?

The programme is brought to you in conjunction with our partner, Dutch broadcaster VPRO.
