Information Ministry staff were challenged today to change Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s perceived image as a propaganda machine. The Director-General of Broadcasting, Datuk Abdul Rahman Hamid, said they had to think of an idea to attract a larger audience for programmes offered by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
“The assumption that RTM programmes are government propaganda material has resulted in people not watching the programmes,” he said when addressing the ministry’s monthly assembly. “As a result, a lot of useful information has not reached the people. With such a perceived image, many viewers tend to turn to the private stations which are deemed to have more freedom,” he lamented.
He praised the move by Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin to use the print media in publicising RTM’s new programmes in efforts to improve RTM’s image. “We should be using the influential print media through the avenue that has been opened up by Datuk Seri Zainuddin,” he said.
Abdul Rahman urged all the ministry’s staff to continuously strive for better work quality and efficiency. “We should view that our hard work could indeed bring prosperity to the country which would also be enjoyed by our family. It is not ratings that we should be chasing but our duties to the people and country,” he said.
