Radio PMR expands medium wave programming

Radio PMR, the state broadcasting service of the unrecognized republic of Pridnestrovie, has expanded its broadcasts on mediumwave to 16 hours a day. The move comes as the country prepares to celebrate its 17th anniversary of independence, which was declared on 2 September 1990. Pridnestrovie is also known under names such as Transnistria and Transdniester. For its international broadcasts, Radio PMR uses a powerful transmitting station inherited from the Soviet Union.

Effective immediately, Radio PMR has expanded its broadcasting time from 1 to 16 hours on mediumwave 549 kHz. The 150 kW transmitter is located in Grigoriopol, and the schedule consists of local programmes mainly in Russian, a few short programmes during the day in Romanian and Ukrainian, and relays of the Russian radio station “Mayak”. Transmissions are on the air from 0200-1800 UTC.

For international listeners, Radio PMR broadcasts in English, German and French. It broadcasts live every day from 1600 UTC on 6235 kHz with news and information about Pridnestrovie. The English-language segment lasts 20 minutes and starts at 1700 UTC [Sic - may be 1600 UTC until the end of summer time on 28 October].

According to Antonina Voronkova, the head of Radio PMR, the station receives frequent feedback from listeners in Europe, Australia and even Japan. A plan for information exchanges is underway with foreign radio stations.
