KTWR Guam, Winter DRM schedule

Hi everyone. We hope your shortwave listening experiences have gone well with the current elevated solar activity. We have seen signals do some interesting things over the past year or so.

Now that the B24 HFCC conference is over, we can let you know what our DRM broadcast schedule will be. We had to delete one broadcast to China and split the South Asia broadcast blocks.

The broadcast to Japan will continue its experiment with the 25-m band. We may change this back to 31 meters at mid-season if the data indicates the need to do so. Finding a frequency free of digital interference has been a challenge.

Another experiment will be using two different antennas for the 15390 kHz broadcasts. The Sunday broadcast will be beamed mostly toward central India while the Saturday broadcast will continue the southern India heading. Please let us know the differences in performance that you notice.

Radio New Zealand's new DRM Shortwave Transmitter now operating

 


Radio New Zealand’s new 100 kW shortwave DRM transmitter has been installed at Rangitaiki Transmitter Centre and is now fully operated by the New Zealand public broadcaster. Tests on the antennas have already been carried out by Swiss technicians at Ampegon. The first tests were broadcast without audio with BF signals of different frequencies. DRM is also tested with “test messages” at 17900 kHz.

RNZ targets Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tonga, but the broadcasts are widely received as far as Europe.

KTWR DRM schedule update

KTWR DRM A24 - Updated - Both India blocks are on 15390 kHz.

We have good news for you. KTWR is maintaining the current amount of time for DRM broadcasts for the A24 broadcast season. The only timing change is that the two Sunday blocks will have no gap between them. The South Indian language broadcasts will start 15 minutes earlier than they do in the B23
season. The end time will also be earlier.

We are grateful for your reception reports. The posts on WhatsApp have been quite helpful. It will be interesting to see how 19 meters performs in India. We have seen some intermittent multipath issues with 22 meters in parts of India.

DRM Remote Learning Trial

 Audio Service to send speech created by a teacher, while the supporting text and picture-based information will be delivered in the same 10kHz wide channel using the Journaline service.

The initial receive equipment being shipped to The Gambia will be an Android device with an SDR and loop antenna.  The StarWaves DRM SoftRadio app will handle everything from demodulation to presenting the audio and Jounaline services.  For anyone with access to the StarWaves app I'd recommend it as the easiest way of receiving DRM, although if you already have Dream up and running then this too should do good service.  The caveat is the Audio will be using the xHE-AAC codec, which can require some extensive tinkering to get working in Dream.  Even if you don't have the ability to decode xHE-AAC, the extensive Jounaline component should still be copyable.

The transmissions will take place Thu 28 and Fri 29 June at the following times:

0630 - 0700UTC: 6195kHz 114°
0830 - 0900UTC: 9410kHz 92°

The transmission tests are being carried out by Encompass Digital Media who do not have an official QSL policy.  However, I'd be interested to hear if anyone succeeds in receiving the transmissions, and would be more than happy to confirm reception reports via email.

KTWR updates their DRM schedule

 


From KTWR Guam:

We ran into some unexpected interference with our 11860kHz DRM broadcast at 1358-1428UTC. As of this Friday, 10 December, we will move it to 11890kHz. We hope this will greatly improve the SNR in central India.

KTWR plans for special holiday DRM broadcasts

 


We have good news for you. (actually, our broadcasts are always about good news.) 

Since the dual-language test that we did for China worked, we are going to broadcast a special simultaneous Mandarin/Cantonese DRM program on Christmas evening at 1057-1127UTC on 9910kHz. (This is during our normal China DRM broadcast.) 

We will also do simultaneous Japanese/Korean in our DRM broadcast the same night on 9910kHz at 1200-1230UTC. (I am sorry that I had mistakenly told you that we were doing these languages in the test a few weeks ago.)

We also have an additional DRM broadcast to announce. From 1-26 December, KTWR will broadcast programs from God-Centered Life (GCL) on 11860kHz at 1358-1428UTC toward South Asia. 

These programs are from different series that GCL has produced. I have looked at the descriptions of the programs and they look quite interesting. We hope you enjoy them, too.

KTWR slated for DRM testing

 


KTWR is going to air some short test DRM broadcasts in the Tamil language each Sunday for the next six weeks. This will be just before our regular DRM block for India. It will be on 15200kHz at 1014-1026 UTC at 90kW. 


The beam heading will be at 285 degrees from Guam, so Sri Lanka and the southern half of India will get the strongest signals in South Asia.

KTWR will be airing special Christmas broadcasts in DRM in December. The frequencies and times will be the same as we use for the current DRM broadcasts. All broadcasts will be in English. (We hope to do this in more languages next year.)

Are Digital Radio Coverage Maps Useful?

A picture is worth a thousand words and a digital radio coverage map might be worth a million dollars or more in business.

We might stress in documents and presentations the undeniable benefits of digital radio: Better audio, extra data, more choice, emergency warning capability and less spectrum. For DRM specifically the list also includes, the capacity to offer improved audio and data for large or local coverage very often using the existing basic infrastructure.

DRM Conference Front and Center at Russia

Conference unveiled initial DRM in FM trial results and looked at various aspects of the digital radio standard

Russian broadcasters took a deep dive into the realm of digital radio with a conference, “Digital Broadcasting Standard DRM: Results of the Experimental Zone and Development Prospects in the Russian Federation,” held in St. Petersburg on Nov. 18.

The conference highlighted the initial results of the DRM for FM trial in St. Petersburg and featured a number of speakers who provided insights into where digital radio stands in Russia.

According to reports, trial results thus far show that for “stable reception of a digital signal, significantly lower field strengths and signal-to-noise ratios are required, which allows achieving parity of service areas with FM broadcasting, ceteris paribus, an order of magnitude lower transmitter power.”

KTWR begins DRM in English on August 5





Hi Everyone,
KTWR is about to start regular DRM broadcasts to four different areas. We will do one day per week to each of four areas starting 05 August 2019. We will be working with the content server parameters to come up with the best compromise settings for each area. Each week will have different settings. We would really appreciate your feedback for as many weeks as possible. Your assistance will ultimately help give your fellow listeners the best possible reception in the long run. For now, all programs will be in English.
The schedule will be as follows, starting the week of 5 August through the end of the A19 broadcast season:

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, January 26-27



Hello friends,

Last weekend was our second week of Shortwave Radiogram transmitted by DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) from WINB in Pennsylvania. I was able to receive almost the entire half hour, and all of the images, using an SDR in Italy.

DRM has its own methods for transmitting text and images, with which I have little experience. On Shortwave Radiogram, we are just placing MFSK on the audio that is decoded from a DRM signal -- the same audio used for voice and music broadcasts on WINB. The disadvantage of this is that DRM is fussier than analog broadcasting, and the decode may fail in conditions where an analog shortwave broadcast is usable, albeit with some noise and fading accompanying the audio.

Is there any advantage to using DRM to transmit the digital text modes? Possibly. The DRM C and D modes are designed to survive difficult (typical!) shortwave conditions. But they produce telephone grade audio. Telephone grade audio should be no problem for the digital modes.There would be sufficient bandwidth to transmit modes that produce text at 3000 words per minute, or more. And with the background noise eliminated by DRM, MFSK and SSTV images should be perfectly crisp. I look forward to the possibility of future experiments with DRM.

Tecsun Radio Australia Q-3061 DRM Shortwave Radio





Finally, a stand-alone Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Shortwave Radio has arrived and is available for DRM and shortwave radio enthusiasts to add to their collection.


The Tecsun Radios Australia Q-3061 DRM Shortwave Radio is the culmination of several years work. Tecsun Radios Australia has worked in close co-operation with the manufacturer providing testing results from locations across the Pacific, including Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, and New Zealand.


Reception of DRM signals in Australia requires many factors to be optimized, because we are outside the traditional coverage area of most broadcasters. Nevertheless, with an optimized antenna, correct selection of DRM broadcaster, schedule and good propagation conditions DRM signals can be received.

The Tecsun Radios Australia Q-3061 DRM Shortwave Radio is primarily designed to receive and decode DRM Shortwave Radio signals but the radio can also be used to receive traditional Shortwave (AM) broadcasts, FM, and AM (MW) broadcasts. 

The Tecsun Radios Australia Q-3061 DRM Shortwave Radio receives DRM, FM, and Shortwave (AW) signals via the inbuilt telescopic antenna, or for superior reception, the radio provides two dedicated external antenna BNC connections for DRM, Shortwave (AM), FM, and AM (MW) signals. 

On the FM band this receiver also decodes RDS where broadcast. In slow tuning mode, the frequency step is reduced to 1 kHz. This is an advantage when tuning the extended MW band (530-1710 kHz) to receive specialised broadcasters in Australia.

New DRM broadcasters are appearing every month. Heard every day are: Radio new Zealand International (6115, 9760 or 11690 kHz), Radio Kuwait (11970 kHz) and the BBC Far
Eastern Relay station in Singapore Kranji (15620 kHz). In addition Radio China has been heard on 17800, 15580, 11695, and 6030 kHz. As the summer months roll on, expect propagation conditions to improve.

Radio New Zealand using DRM to Feed Pacific Relay Stations



DRM signals decoded, transmitted locally on FM to individual listeners

RANGITAIKI, New Zealand — Radio New Zealand Pacific, the official international arm of Radio New Zealand, is using Digital Radio Mondiale digital radio transmission/reception equipment to feed studio-quality audio to some of its 20 relay stations in the Pacific Ocean region. The others use satellite feeds or web downloads.

The locations being served by DRM include the Cook Islands, where RNZ Pacific’s programs are rebroadcast locally in analog mode by Aitutaki 88FM, the islands’ only broadcaster. RNZ Pacific also serves Tonga, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands using DRM; among others. Previously, RNZ Pacific had fed its relays using analog AM shortwave radio, with that transmission mode’s limited audio range and interference issues.

All India Radio revives DRM broadcast from Bangalore


All India Radio, Bangalore has re-commissioned its 500 KW DRM shortwave transmitter. 
DRM transmissions were off air from 27 February, 2017 due to main tube failure.

Effective: 03 August 2018

Tentative schedule in DRM mode:
European Beam at 320 deg
1820-2230 (2350-0400 IST) - 7550 kHz

Japanese beam at 90 deg
2245-0045 (0415-0615 IST) - 7550 kHz
