Angola needs a rural radio to help promote development and fight
famine and poverty, said Tuesday in Luanda the UN Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) representative to Angola, Anatoli Ndong
Mba.
Addressing the opening of the Seminar on Participative Formulation of
the Rural Radio Project, Anatoli Ndong Mba, said the country is ready
for the rural radio and actually needs it to fight Hiv/Aids and consolidate
the emerging democracy.
He said that Angola's readiness to promote the setting up of the rural
radio is evident in Government's wish to take development to the rural
areas, through a decentralised programme.
Speaking on the purposes of the rural radio, the source underlined it is
aimed at ascribing power to rural populations to actively participate in
the production of programmes directed to development.
It is also intended to assist peasants with the use of such programmes
towards the promotion of development in rural areas, where most of the
Angolan population live, the source added.
According to him, the rural radio project is part of other actions required
for a response to the real needs of the farmers, especially where the
access to markets is concerned.
The creation of the rural radio follows Angolan Government calls for
FAO to send in a technical commission for the formulation of the
project in support for the Rural Extension and Development
Programme (PEDR), designed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development.
FAO technicians are since a week ago in the country, from Rome, the
organisation's headquarters. The team comprises Magdalena Blum and
Jean-Pierre Ilboudo.
The draft will on due course be submitted to the minister of Agriculture
and Rural Development, Gilberto Buta Lutucuta, who will then appeal to
FAO for funds, within the framework of existing cooperation with that
UN agency.
The one-day seminar on rural radio was opened by FAO representative
to Angola, Anatoli Ndong Mba.
