We hope you find this file a useful accompaniment to the printed WRTH.

Trans World Radio in Benin active on medium wave

Extending The Reach of God's Word
Trans World Radio reaching the unreached from new transmitting site in West Africa

Cary, NC, February 5, 2008-Following years of prayer, groundwork and intense spiritual warfare, international Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio (TWR) is now airing the good news of Jesus Christ into spiritually needy West Africa. Broadcasts in 14 languages began February 1 from a powerful 100,000-watt AM transmitter located in the country of Benin, the birthplace of voodoo.

The new broadcasting outlet marks TWR's 14th major international transmitting site, and it fortifies the Mission's 33-year-old evangelical outreach in Africa. The facility has the potential to reach some 63 million people, many of whom belong to another major world religion. "We need to pray for those who are going to hear the gospel perhaps for the very first time," says TWR-Africa Director of Operations Ray Alary. "Pray that they will be receptive, and that their hearts will be changed for the Lord Jesus Christ."

According to Operation World (21st Century Edition), most West African nations have numerous unreached people groups without an established indigenous evangelical church. Radio, then, is one of the most relevant and cost-effective ways to share Christ's love with people in this vast region. TWR's broadcasts to West Africa provide messages of hope and salvation not evidenced on a large scale since a civil war resulted in the destruction of Radio ELWA in 1990. The Benin station broadcasts evangelical and discipleship programs produced by pastors, Christian organizations and church leaders in West Africa. Furthermore, broadcasts are airing for children, nonreaders and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Broadcasts from Benin include the following diverse languages and dialects: Bariba, Dendi, Ditammari, English, Fon, French, Hausa, Ifè, Kanuri, Lukpa, Pulaar, Songhai, Twi and Yoruba. To read more about TWR's ministry from Benin, visit http://www.twrafrica.org

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
28 January - 03 February 2008

Solar activity was very low. New Region 982 (S10, L=245, class/area, Cro/030 on 01 February) formed on the disk on 29 January and only produced low-level B-class activity.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 28 January, 31 January, and 02 - 03 February.

The geomagnetic field was at mostly quiet levels during 28 - 31 January. Activity increased to active to minor storm levels by midday on 01 February. Isolated major storm periods were observed at high latitudes midday on 02 and 03 February. Activity decreased to mostly quiet to unsettled levels by late on 03 February. ACE solar wind measurements detected a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) at about 31/0900 UTC in advance of a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (HSS) that began about 31/2100 UTC. Peak wind velocities during this stream were 638 km/sec at 02/2354 UTC. Density peaked at 16 p/cc at 31/1540 UTC while the IMF Bt peaked at
9.0 nT at 31/1646 UTC. Intermittent periods of southward Bz reached a minimum of -9.6 nT at 31/1624 UTC. The period ended with velocities steady at about 600 km/s and the IMF Bz not varying much beyond +/- 5 nT.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity

Solar activity is expected to be very low.

Radio Sweden closes German service on shortwave

Radio Sweden has confirmed that its German service, which has been on the air for 69 years, will close at the end of March. Within international broadcasting, some languages, including German, have had a breakthrough on the Web and through podcasting, but the number of listeners, especially on shortwave, has dropped dramatically in recent years.
It is this development which has figured in the decision of Swedish Radio management to suspend German broadcasts on shortwave and mediumwave. SR International retains, however, German for a basic service of news on the Web and as a Monday to Friday podcast. English is not affected and not in danger of being taken off the air.

Every where else it's just Tuesday, February 5, 2008 - except for New Orleans, Louisiana. Tuesday is Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras. Although Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world, no one does it like New Orleans- " The City That Care Forgot!" It's a day of non-stop parades, madness, zaniness and yes some debauchery in certain places. The city shuts down for the day, including schools and all government offices, and good thing.... who wants to work on Fat Tuesday?

Time running out to work Antarctica

DPØ, ANTARCTICA. Felix, DL5XL (ex DP1POL), states that time is running out to work DPØGVN. He informs, “This summer may very well be the last chance to work the German Antarctic base ‘Neumayer II’ (WAP DEU-Ø2, AA DL-Ø3) as the base is scheduled to close in February 2009, and there will be no radio amateur on the wintering team 2008.” Currently, there are three operators at “Neumayer II” who are regularly active during their spare time as DPØGVN.

Their main times of activity are daily between 1800-2200z, usually on 40/30/20 meters. Operators are: Mirko/DG9BHQ (SSB Op), Torsten/DL1TOG (SSB Op) and Felix/DL5XL (CW Op). All three operators will leave the station by March 10th. QSL route for all DPØGVN QSOs after 2006 is DL5EBE, direct or by the bureau. There is an online log check for all contacts for this summer’s season available at: http://www.

EU offers closer ties to Serbia

The European Union has said it wants to accelerate Serbia's progress towards membership following the re-election of pro-Western President Boris Tadic.

Mr Tadic claimed victory after taking slightly more than half the votes cast in a tight run-off contest with nationalist Tomislav Nikolic.

It comes as Serbia's Kosovo province prepares to declare independence.

In a message to Mr Tadic, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission - the EU's executive arm - said the result was "a victory for democracy in Serbia and for the European values we share".

Mexico
6010.00, Radio Mil: I thought they were a goner, but Jim Ronda’s recent log alerted me to the contrary. At my QTH it was a just barely-perceptible, out-of-phase het to Conciencia (6009.95) until 1145, when it slowly started becoming distinguishable. Conciencia is tenacious, however, and didn’t clear out until after 1230. Messy even after that, however, incl. some spillover from WYFR-6000. Even at 1245+ Mil was not very good, and it was going downhill at 1300, by which time there seemed to be another weak voice in the picture. The R8 was a bit better overall on this one, although you have to give the E1 synch credit for locking on to Mil even in the mess. -- Different on Jan 1: Mil was already in with a decent signal at 1010, but Conciencia was by far dominant. Papua New Guinea
4960, Catholic Radio Network (now known as Radio St. Gabriel) heard from 0925 tune to 1300 with one of the better signals I’ve heard from this station - S2 at beginning but some improvement after 1100 to about 1230 to an occasional S3. After 1230 started fading somewhat in increasing noise. Usually CRN is at or near the noise threshold with only a carrier audible. From 1100 there was a woman announcer but couldn’t tell the language - probably vernacular as it sounded like a local program, not Vatican Radio relay. Man at 1111. Instrumental music at 1112 followed by woman again to 1115. After 1200 most programming was devotional songs with occasional short announcements. Occasional 2 sec RTTY bursts, but not a real QRM problem. SINPO 2/34333. Would like to see a QSL from this station someday! (Churchill-

RFI taken off the air in Côte d’ Ivoire

Abidjan, 1 February 2008: The Ivorian media regulatory body has suspended the broadcasting of Radio France Internationale programmes “across the whole of the country”, “until further notice”, because of the lack of a radio correspondent in the country.

“RFI programmes broadcast on FM and by satellite have been suspended as of midnight on 31 January,” says a statement issued by the Ivorian National Audiovisual Communications Council (CNCA), sent to AFP. The statement, signed by the CNCA chairman, Jerome Diegou Bailly, notes that on RFI’s part there is “a clear determination not to meet either its written pledges or to keep its word”.

“RFI put a request to the CNCA and gained approval for a correspondent to be put in place in Abidjan by 31 December, a pledge confirmed to Abidjan on 23 November by Ms Dominique Burg, the network director,” continues the statement, emphasizing that the radio had been given a “further extension until 31 January”.

On 18 April 2007, the CNCA had already threatened to suspend RFI programmes until mid-May if the radio failed to keep a correspondent in the country. On 12 May 2006, the CNCA gave permission for RFI programmes to resume broadcasting in Cote d’Ivoire after a gap of almost 10 months, notably for “unprofessional treatment of news”, due partly to the “lack of a correspondent” in the country. This authorization was given “after several meetings between the two parties, who decided to settle the dispute amicably”.

The radio had closed its regional office in Abidjan following the death of its correspondent, Jean Helene, shot in the head and killed by a police officer in Abidjan on 20 October 2003.

RFI FM broadcasts in Cote d’Ivoire have been suspended several times since the attempted coup d’etat of September 2002 by rebels of the New Forces against President Laurent Gbagbo.

Bouvet Island remains active on 14260 kHz

3Y, BOUVET ISLAND (Update). Petrus, 3YØE, continues to be active daily on 14260 kHz usually between 1600-1900z. The 3YØE Web page reports that they have received another portion of QSOs logged by Petrus up to January 24th. It also mentions: "Important note: Due to the amount of E-mails we receive with log queries (i.e. I’m not in the log, correct my call, put me refer to this post regarding log issues. We also would like to repeat that none of the missing entries nor suffi x corrections etc. in the log may be corrected without good proof that a QSO took place (i.e. recording of a genuine QSO) and we cannot refer to any issues like those until Petrus comes back to RSA from Bouvet Island with his notes and logbook. All queries will be revised then and all operators concerned will be contacted with exact info of their logbook entries status.

Breaking News: National Radio destroyed in Chad

NDJAMENA (AFP)--The main market in Ndjamena and the national radio station were destroyed Sunday by fires and looting, witnesses told AFP, as fighting raged between rebels and government forces in Chad's capital. One witness said: "The public market was partly set on fire in the morning after a helicopter (belonging to government forces) fired a rocket at rebels."

NDJAMENA (AFP) - Fierce fighting with tanks and helicopter strikes rocked the Chad capital for a second day Sunday as rebels surrounded President Idriss Deby in his palace and hundreds of foreigners fled the country.

With international aid organisations reporting bodies in the streets and hundreds of people wounded, anti-tank and automatic weapons fire was heard around the presidential palace, where Deby has been holed up since Friday.

Chad state radio went off the air on Saturday as rebels advanced into the capital, opposition leader Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh said. He made the claims in a telephone call from the central African nation’s embattled capital, N’Djamena. Saleh said rebels had entered the city and shooting that had erupted in the morning appeared to have died down. He said there were no soldiers in his neighbourhood and the state broadcaster had gone off the air in the morning.

Update 1645 UTC Sunday 3 February: More fighting is reported in N’Djamena. AFP reported this morning that government helicopters had attacked a column of rebels in the south of the city heading towards the main radio station. No broadcasts were monitored yesterday evening on 4905 kHz, which had been putting strong signals into Europe in recent days (see attached comment from Dr Derek Lynch).
On Sunday afternoon, the AFP news agency reported that the radio station had been “destroyed today by fires and looting.” Witnesses said the radio station had been pillaged by a mob that smashed broadcasting equipment and made off with computers. That suggests it was put out of action rather than totally destroyed.

Llivia Another New DXCC Entity?

According to reporting from the DXCC Desk, they are finalizing the last details to put up a new entity for DXCC - “LLivia”. As we all know, this is a Spanish enclave within French territory. [K1XN & The Golist]. Llivia is a Spanish enclave in the French Pyrenees. It remained Spanish because of its city-rights obtained in the past.

Llivia is demarcated by 45 bordermarkers. In August 2002 we photographed the fi rst half of these bordermarkers. In 2004 and 2005 the survey was completed. Three bordermarkers couldn’t be found: no.24, 26 and 27 but their absence couldn’t be fully established.

Rebels surround president's palace in Chad capital

N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chadian rebels surrounded the presidential palace in N'Djamena on Saturday after storming into the capital, and France began evacuating French and foreign nationals from the city.
After a day of fierce clashes in the streets of N'Djamena, there was speculation about the whereabouts of President Idriss Deby, but at least two of his ministers said he remained inside the palace complex at the head of loyal troops.

Rebels battle inside Chad's capital: resident

N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chadian rebels fighting to overthrow President Idriss Deby battled their way into the capital N'Djamena on Saturday and were heading for the presidential palace, a foreign resident in the city said.
Rebels with a column of 300 vehicles have closed in on the capital of the central African oil producing country in their most determined offensive in two years. They fought confused battles with Deby's troops on Friday northeast of the city.

VOA launches African Music Treasures blog

As a reminder to our blog readers, from an earlier post, for Voice of America's African Music Treasures blog.

The Voice of America (VOA) has launched African Music Treasures, its first weblog (”blog”) designed especially for African music fans around the world. Matthew Lavoie, host of VOA’s popular Music Time in Africa music show, will moderate the blog featuring music from VOA’s extensive and rare African music collection, music commentary, audio clips, bios of interesting musicians, and chats with online participants.
“Our archive is overflowing with rare music from every country in Africa,” said Lavoie. “I’m excited to share it with my fellow enthusiasts,” he added. One of the featured artists on the new blog is Rwandan musician Bizimungu Dieudonne. Dieudonne became a well-known performer throughout Kigali in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was later killed in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Audio clips of Dieudonne favorites, including “Tabara Ryangombe,” a song depicting the struggles of Rwandan youth, are available on the blog.
VOA’s African music archive houses more than 10,000 music titles, including the Leo Sarkisian Library of African Music. Sarkisian, an internationally known musician and ethnomusicologist, amassed the collection during nearly 50 years of traveling in and broadcasting to Africa.

Pacific Asian Log Radio Guide, 2008 Edition

New 2008 Mediumwave Edition
The first update for 2008 of this free guide is now online at www.radioheritage.net and includes complete revisions for a number of countries. The radio guide lists thousands of operating AM radio stations across the entire region from Afghanistan to Alaska, China, Japan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacifi c Islands and Hawaii.

Easy to use, with online search and downloadable versions. Stations can be found by country or frequency for example. Data includes hours of operation, program formats, transmitter power and much more. According to the Radio Heritage Foundation
http://www.radioheritage.net, the largest number of currently listed AM transmitters are located in China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines.

Endangered AM Radio Watchlist
Meanwhile, a growing number of countries are now on the Radio Heritage Foundation’s Endangered AM Radio Watchlist, having just one mediumwave station known to be on air.
These countries are:
American Samoa, Diego Garcia [British Indian Ocean Territory], Christmas Island [Indian Ocean], Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Macau, Malaysia [West],
Maldives, Myanmar, Norfolk Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and Tonga.

In the last year or so, the following countries across the region have ceased broadcasting on mediumwave: Easter Island, Cocos [Keeling] Islands, Lord Howe Island, Nauru, Tuvalu and Wallis et Futuna.

All of these countries now broadcast only on FM. As a result of this major shift to FM radio across the region, the fi rst in a new series of Asia and Pacifi c FM Radio Guides will be launched at www.radioheritage.net in the coming weeks. We suggest you regularly check the site for these and other new content. Residents and diplomats said rebel fighters had entered the capital, but the situation remained confused.
Machine gun and heavy weapons fire, sometimes sporadic, sometimes more intense, could be heard as France prepared to evacuate French and other foreign nationals.

Yes, Chad received here in Sri Lanka too, but only in the evening slot, initially mixing badly with CNR. Thanks for the tip. I have ben rather slow with my DXing due to too much work. But one by one the antennas are getting refurbished and will come back with a lot of interest, not that I have ever been off the band. How can I when I earn a living being in front of a radio.

One comment, someone said probably Chad is down here due to interference on 6 KHz. Well the reason is, I am sure, that evening and morning 6 MHz is not serving a wider area due to propagation in an area between the ground wave and the first sky wave coverage area. With the sun spots so low for local shortwave coverage the angle of return has to be wider as the frequency goes up. Right now here in the tropics in Sri Lanka which is almost similar latitude to Chad, till about 8 a.m. in the morning and after 7 p.m. it is hard to have any coverage in an area about 200kms from the txsite on 6, 7 MHz. So as hams we have to come down to the next band 75metres. With a lot of people depending on SW in Chad the 4904.5 is a logical move. (Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, DXplorer)

Armchair level signals from 0509 tune to 0645 end recording peaked at S5 from 0530 to 0630 with quick improvement from 0509 and slower degradation after 0630. Interesting programing. George McClintock Starting a New US Shortwave Station

George McClintock, of WWCR fame, has filed an application for a new shortwave station with the US Federal Communications Commission International Bureau in Washington, D.C., on January 22, 2008. The application (IHF-C/P-20080122-00001) was adopted on January 30 and has been accepted for filing public notice. The application was filed in the name Leap of Faith, Inc, 6611 Ormond Drive, Nashville, TN 37205 with McClintock listed as the contact point. No further information was available in the FCC files.

South American Pirate, Radio Cóchiguaz celebrates their 11th Anniversary

Dear Friends,

On February 1, it is 11 years since we started our radio station, Radio Cochiguaz. We will therefore in the coming days and weeks, broadcast transmissions for all our friends around the world. Our main transmitter has a technical problems, we have not solved yet. Another transmitter, is also not operational yet, but is being prepared to operate on 11430 kHz SSB.

A third transmitter, is ready to transmitt on 6305 kHz.

Thus, this month we will broadcast to celebrate our 11th anniversary, both with broadcast from here in the Andes as well as in Europe.

The broadcasting schedule will be released shortly, but is scheduled to transmitt on 6305kHz (from the Andes) and 6290 or 6307 kHz (from Europe).

Radio Maria begins on 675 AM kHz

As previously reported, the new Dutch Catholic station Radio Maria has commenced broadcasts on 675 kHz, which it has taken over from Arrow Classic Rock. On its website, you can find MP3 audio fragments of the opening of Radio Maria (2′25″) beginning with a short statement (in Dutch) by Arrow boss Ad Ossendrijver. Radio Maria will be broadcasting 24 hours a day on 675 kHz, initially with religious music programmes, but will gradually develop a full programme schedule. Radio Maria is non-commercial, and will depend entirely on voluntary donations.

The repeats of old programmes from Dutch commercial broadcaster Arrow Classic Rock on 675 kHz will cease at the end of January, to be replaced from 1 February by test transmissions from religious station, Radio Maria, based in Italy but now active in various parts of the world. An official start date for Radio Maria, which will be based in Den Bosch, has not yet been announced.

Thai Public Broadcasting Service programming to begin Feb. 1

The Thai Public Broadcasting Service (TPBS) will start broadcasting from tomorrow until 14 February in a trial period without news reports, said the station’s acting director Thepchai Yong yesterday. Full programming with news reports will begin from 15 February, he said.

The trial, from 5am to midnight, will have documentaries, children’s shows, a live talk show, and Chinese movies. Mr Thepchai said the choice of programmes was above board and complied with the objective of making TPBS public television free of commercial interest.
