European Perspective


Thirty days after seasonal changes took place, International radio schedules show how deep reductions are affecting short and mediumwave.

            From Russia, the Voice of Russia announced that their Swiss relay on medium wave 558 kHz will be closed down as from December 31st, 2012.  The future of the antenna is still uncertain.  It used to be the main outlet for Swiss Italian language public radio until 2005 but it found a new life as German, French and Italian programs from Radio Moscow were re-directed to Central Europe from its powerful antenna looking over the Alps.

            The Voice of Russia will concentrate its mediumwave broadcasts to Southern Europe on 1548 kHz from Moldova but also through a digital TV channel in North West Italy.  As you know digital TV is offering also a new chance to listen to radio and at the Voice of Russia they’re testing this opportunity to get in touch with old and new listeners.

            Similar tests have been conducted also by Radio France Internationale and the Vatican Radio but coverage is proving to be very limited while costs are still unknown.

            On short wave we notice heavy cuts and many frequencies have been silenced.  I’m truly upset as I find nothing on the 49 meters band, once the most popular European short wave band.  Some broadcasts are still aired from Vienna, Austria, in German at 07.00 UTC on 6155 kHz.  A taste of the past.

            During daytime only, Romania, Spain and Turkey seem to be active as usual in Southern Europe, especially on higher frequencies, for instance:

               * Radio Romania International in French on 15150 kHz at 11.30 UTC,

               * Radio Exterior de España in Spanish on 15585 kHz at 11.45 UTC,

               * The Voice of Turkey in German on 17755 kHz at 12.45 UTC.

                        In English, China Radio International is using many frequencies.  Around noon UTC they’re broadcasting on 17490 kHz. 

            Some broadcasts to Africa are also heard in Europe.  From Woofferton England, Deutsche Welle is beaming its French program to Central Africa at 12:00 UTC on 17800 kHz, thus giving a chance to shortwave listeners in Europe too, after they abandoned all broadcasts to the Old Continent.

Ancient DX Report 1902



            In our Ancient DX Report for the year 1902, we report the comment of a radio historian who stated that the Navy in each major country of the world was now involved in studying and  experimenting with wireless. We might also add that wireless was on the air experimentally in many different countries throughout the world during the year 1902: in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia & the South Pacific. 

            During this particular year under review, the Japanese Navy established two experimental wireless stations, one in Tokyo and the other in Yokasuka, as the first wireless stations in Asia.  The Marconi company established two wireless stations in Africa, one in the Congo and another in Angola, and these were the first wireless stations in that continent.

            Marconi himself was involved with further experimental transmissions from ships; on the “Philadelphia” in the Atlantic at a distance of 2099 miles from the Poldhu station, and on the “Koh-i-Noor” (KOH-ee-noor) for the benefit of the assembled governors from the various colonies in the British Empire.  The tests from Poldhu to the “Philadelphia” were radiated on 820 kHz mediumwave.

            Marconi was also involved with tests transmissions on board the Italian Navy vessel “Carlo Alberto” and these experiments took place in the Mediterranean, off the coast of European Russia, and in the Atlantic.  In fact at one stage, Marconi was granted the exclusive usage of the “Carlo Alberto” almost as though it was his own mobile experimental wireless station.

            Both France and Spain established land based wireless stations on an experimental basis during the year 1902.  The French stations were established on Ushant Island, just off the western edge of France, and the mainland station was at Brest, 50 miles distant.  The Spanish stations were located at Cabo de la Nao and Cabo Pelado, both on the Mediterranean coastline.

            Over in the United States, the Marconi company rebuilt the antenna system at their Wellfleet station, CC, that had been destroyed in a windstorm at the end of November in the previous year, 1901.  In August, the Marconi company also took out a lease on the Jacob’s property at Fire Island, just off the coast of Long island, for the purpose of establishing what became known as the Babylon Wireless Station.

            Also during the year 1902, Lee de Forest constructed a wireless station on the roof of the Cheese Borough Building in New York City, and a companion station on the Hotel Castleton on nearby Staten Island.  This Staten Island station is recognized as the word’s first wireless/radio station ever built on the premises of a hotel. De Forest also obtained land near the Montauk Lighthouse, right at the Atlantic end of Long Island, for the installation of a wireless station.

            In the meantime, the Canadian born Reginald Fessenden was also busy on the experimental wireless scene in the United States.  On April 19, he gave a public demonstration of his wireless equipment to several government officials, including army & navy personnel, on Roanoke Island, North Carolina.  Soon afterwards, he transferred the equipment to another location, this time to Old Point Comfort in Virginia.  Right at the end of the year, Fessenden was awarded a patent for the transmission of voice messages by wireless.

            During the summer, Archie Collins conducted voice transmissions between ship and shore.  The two small ships involved in this experimentation were the “John G. McCullough” and the “Ridgewood”, both owned by the extensive Erie Railroad System.

            Interestingly, there was also a series of voice transmissions over on the west coast of the United States.  Young Francis McCarty successfully transmitted experimental voice messages in the famous Golden Gate Park to his brother Ignatius on the other side of Stow Lake.

            During this same era, three young men in New Zealand conducted their own successful wireless experiments.  James Logan sent Morse Code signals across Wellington Harbour, at the bottom of the North Island; a Mr. W. P. Huggins sent Morse Code signals across a short distance at Timaru, in the middle of the eastern coast of the South Island; and Joe Passmore, at the age of 17, sent Morse wireless messages in Dunedin, at the bottom of the South Island.

            It was during the year 1902 that extensive building work was accomplished for a huge new Marconi station near Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada.  This grand new station, located near the coast at Table Head, Glace Bay, was made up with several buildings, including the main transmitter building which was four times larger than the earlier sister station at Poldhu in England. 

            The four wooden aerial towers, made of pine wood, 210 feet high, stood at the corners of a square 200 feet on each side.  The transmission cables at the top of these towers were 3 inches thick, and they whipped around angrily when the power from the 75 kW alternator was applied.  The first day of transmission tests from this new station at Glace Bay in Canada was November 19, 1902.

            Around this era the king of Germany, His Imperial Majesty Kaiser Wilhelm 2, became very interested in the development of wireless, particularly for its usefulness to the German navy.       

            It is stated that a contingent of personnel from a German navy ship at berth in Sydney Harbor, Nova Scotia in Canada, made their way to the new Marconi wireless station at Table Head, Glace Bay.  It would appear that this event took place quite early in the year 1902.

            This group of 30 naval officers, under the leadership of the navy commander and accompanied by the German wireless inventor, Professor Adolf Slaby, were intent upon viewing the latest wireless developments as installed at this massive new wireless station.  The station manager, Richard Vyvyan VIV-ee-an), opposed their entry, and stated that they would be welcome, if they showed a letter of authority from Marconi or his company.  The group demanding entrance to inspect the station stated that His Imperial Majesty in Berlin would be much annoyed if his men were not permitted to view the station.

            Next day, a company of 150 sailors showed up, in a much larger attempt to over run the property.  In a intuitive bid to deter this “invasion”, as the radio historians call it, Vyvyan organized a defensive force of local laborers who successfully opposed the attempt.

Wavescan begins a new focus for 2013


"Wavescan" CALLING AFRICA!
 
During the entire coming year, 2013, programming in the AWR DX program, "Wavescan", will be concentrated upon the radio broadcasting scene on the continent of Africa, including nearby islands and the Middle East. Tentative planning for the scheduling of radio features includes a historic rundown of an African radio station, large or small, as the the main opening topic every third week. As follow on topics in the weekly half hour program, many additional African features will be presented, including interviews and on-the-spot recordings made by the program producer, Jeff White of Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida.

All of the African information that will be presented on air in "Wavescan" throughout the year 2013 will be under the title, "Focus on Africa", and the purpose for this year long emphasis is to encourage the development of international radio broadcasting and shortwave listening throughout the African arena. The international DX program, "Wavescan" is researched and written in Indianapolis and produced by Jeff White in the studios of shortwave WRMI in Miami.

We here at "Wavescan" always welcome reception reports from our listeners, and we receive listener mail from some 100 countries throughout the world. All reception reports are verified with our QSL cards through the postal system, and of course, some form of return postage is always appreciated.

In particular, we would welcome reception reports from listeners living in continental Africa and nearby areas. The international DX program "Wavescan" is the current name for the original DX program, "Radio Monitors International" that was launched from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in 1975, as part of the shortwave scheduling of Adventist World Radio.

IRRS announces new programs

Dear Listeners and Friends of IRRS-Shortwave,

It's the time of the year when we are usually summing up our activities, and  deciding whether and how to follow up in the next. At the end of the year we  will be having our annual board meeting, but I can anticipate that we will  continue broadcasting on shortwave, focusing even more to far away countries,  besides our usual targets in Europe, North Africa and Middle East.

Effective from December 22, 2012, IRRS has begun a weekly each Saturday at 20:45 CET (19:45 UTC) on 7290 kHz and 1368 kHz medium wave. The program is a 15 minute program in French and English specifically created for shortwave about issues related to Europe and interesting to our European audience. I will not reveal the name just now, just listen and send your reception report directly to the address that you hear on the air. They also QSL directly.

Lastly if you have not sent a reception report for our newly started medium wave broadcasts, we will sending out a special QSL card for reception reports received ONLY for broadcasts in the following time slots, as heard ONLY until Dec. 31, 2012:

- 20:00-21:00 UTC (21:00-22:00 CET) on 7290 kHz and 1368 kHz MW (CHALLENGER R. NORD ITALIA)

- 06:00-07:00 UTC (07:00-08:00 CET) on 1368 kHz MW (CHALLENGER R. NORD ITALIA)

IRRS-SW holiday announcement



Dear Listeners and Friends of IRRS-Shortwave,

It's the time of the year when we are usually summing up our activities, and  deciding whether and how to follow up in the next. At the end of the year we  will be having our annual board meeting, but I can anticipate that we will  continue broadcasting on Shortwave, focusing even more to far away countries,  besides our usual targets in Europe, North Africa and Middle East.

Just before Christmas I would like to inform you of a new, exceptional news  program that will be broadcasted effective Dec. 22, 2012 weekly each Saturday at  20:45 CET (19:45 UTC) on 7290 kHz and 1368 kHz Medium Wave. The program is a 15 minute program in French and English specifically created for Shortwave about  issues related to Europe and interesting to our European audience. I will not  reveal the name just now, just listen and send your reception report directly to
the address that you hear on the air. They also QSL directly.

Lastly if you have not sent a reception report for our newly started Medium Wave  broadcasts, we will sending out a special QSL card for reception reports  received ONLY for broadcasts in the following time slots, as heard ONLY until  Dec. 31, 2012:

- 20:00-21:00 UTC (21:00-22:00 CET) on 7290 kHz and 1368 kHz MW (CHALLENGER R. NORD ITALIA)

- 06:00-07:00 UTC (07:00-08:00 CET) on 1368 kHz MW (CHALLENGER R. NORD ITALIA)

XVRB set for December 23 broadcast

Special DRM broadcasts for Wavescan

The "Wavescan" DX program which is a joint production of NASB members Adventist World Radio and Radio Miami International, will be included in a new series of four DRM (digital) shortwave transmissions called "DRM Mix" sponsored by Spaceline in Bulgaria which will take place on 22, 23, 25 and 26 December, 2012. Wavescan will air from 17.00 - 17.30 UTC on those days. The frequency will be 9755 kHz from Bulgaria, covering Europe with 100 kW. Wavescan QSL cards are available for reception reports on these broadcasts. The program content will include information on the history of broadcasting in Bulgaria.

Rádio Ecclésia will not return to shortwave

Angola

In an interview to the Luanda newspaper "O País", Quintino Kandange, who is the director of the Angolan Catholic Broadcaster, Rádio Ecclésia, said that the Catholic Church in Angola renounces to the intention of transmitting on shortwaves again. Instead, the Bishops Conference of Angola and São Tomé decided to ask to the Angolan government for the creation of regional radios on a diocesan basis, on FM only. This is bad news for DXers, of course, and especially for the millions of Angolans who do not live in the main towns of that vast country. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 - 16 December 2012
Solar activity was low. The largest flare of the period came from Region 1629 (N11, L=240, class/area=Dai/170 on 14 December), a C5/Sf 12/0727Z. Region 1630 (N19, L=253, class/area=Cai/90 on 11 December), also produced a C5 flare on 10/0558Z. The remainder of
the period was dominated by infrequent, low-level C-class activity. No earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed during the week.

A 10 MeV proton enhancement at geosynchronous orbit was observed on 14-15 December. 10 MeV particle flux was slightly elevated beginning around 14/0900Z. An eruption from the beyond the west limb, in the southern hemisphere, was visible in STEREO-A EUVI imagery beginning around 14/1200Z. 10 MeV flux began climbing more steeply around 14/2245Z, reaching a peak of 9.36 pfu at 15/0155Z, just below the S1 threshold of 10 pfu. Flux returned to normal levels over the course
of the next two days.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels throughout the week.

Geomagnetic field activity quiet all week. Solar wind speed at the ACE spacecraft ranged from around 270 km/s to the near 470 km/s while Bz was never less than -8 nT. A very weak shock was observed at the ACE spacecraft at 14/1852Z, and at GOES by 14/1946Z. Isolated unsettled to minor storm levels were subsequently observed at high latitudes mid-day on 15 and 16 December.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 December - 12 January 2013
Solar activity is expected to be low with a slight chance for moderate activity through the forecast period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at background levels except during 19-21 December when a high speed stream is expected to bring the flux to high
levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to begin the forecast period at unsettled levels with a slight chance for an active period on 17-18 December as a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream becomes geoeffective. The remainder of the forecast period is expected to be generally quiet barring any geoeffective coronal mass ejections.
