Radio Free Asia releases news to listeners

Dear friends,

Just a few short notes from all of us at RFA:

1. We removed the map, with pins, from our Automated Reception Report System (ARRS) at http://techweb.rfa.org so we can eventually update it.

That page needed an update for a while and we're currently looking at what Google, Amazon Web Services, and others may provide.

There is no target date yet but we will let you know when we are ready to add the map feature back to RFA's ARRS.

2. The pandemic continues to hamper our ability to confirm reception reports quickly. Instead of days or weeks, it now takes months before we get to most RRs. Please be patient but also feel free to write us at qsl@rfa.org to follow up on any RFA reception reports you've sent, but have gone months without hearing from us.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best wishes; stay healthy.  73.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 - 29 August 2021

Solar activity was at moderate levels. An approximate 40 degree eruptive filament was observed on 23 Aug with an associated CME first visible in C2 LASCO imagery at 23/0648 UTC. Region 2859 (N16, L=11, class/area Dso/50 on 26 Aug) produced a C3.0 flare on 26/1818 UTC. A partial HALO CME associated with this event was observed in LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 26/1900 UTC. This event was modeledand expected to impact Earth on 30 Aug. Region 2860 (S29, L=01, class/area Eki/340 on 28 Aug) produced an M4.7 flare at 28/0611 UTC along with numerous C-class events. The M4 event was accompanied by a 1 Normal optical flare and Type II radio emission (276 km/s). A partial HALO CME was observed in coronagraph imagery in association with this event beginning near 28/0648 UTC. This event was modeled with an arrival on 01 Sep.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 28-29 Aug most likely due to influences from a CME from 23 Aug. Normal to moderate levels were observed for the remainder of the highlight period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached G1-Minor storm levels on 28 Aug, and active levels on 27 Aug most likely due to influences from the 23 Aug CME. Total field reached 16 nT and Bz was at a negative 10-15 nT for several hours after CME arrival. The rest of the highlight period was at quiet to unsettled levels with a nominal solar wind.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 August - 25 September 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at moderate levels from 30 Aug - 03 Sep with Region 2860 rotating off the visible disk on 04 Sep. Moderate levels are also likely on 16-25 Sep as Region 2860 rotates back onto the visible disk. Very low levels are expected on 04-15 Sep.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at moderate to high levels on 30 Aug - 05 Sep due to CME influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 06-25 Sep.Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at G1-Minor storm levels on 30 Aug and 01 Sep due to influences from the CMEs from 26 and 28 Aug, respectively. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 02-03 Sep, 11-12 Sep, and 21 Sep all due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!

Radio Free Asia Announces 25th Anniversary QSL

September 2021

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces its 25th-anniversary QSL. Bringing free press to closed societies, RFA’s first broadcast was in Mandarin on September 29, 1996, at 2100 UTC. RFA is a private, nonprofit corporation broadcasting news and information to listeners in Asian countries where full, accurate, and timely news reports are unavailable. Acting as a substitute for indigenous free media, RFA concentrates coverage on events occurring in and/or affecting Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, North Korea, the People’s Republic of China, and Vietnam. This is RFA’s 77th QSL and used to confirm all valid RFA reception reports from September – December 2021.

RFA QSL

RFA’s 25th Anniversary QSL
Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Tibetan (including Uke, Amdo, and Kham dialects), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in our editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of our target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of our broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest.  More information about RFA, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is always available at http://www.rfa.org.

RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports.  Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions.  RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener.  RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at http://techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers but also from our general listening audience.

Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org and by mail to:

According to Nabbharat Times, the Taliban have taken over the TV station to broadcast threats and warnings and to also propagate the Taliban’s Voice of Shariah.

Taliban has upped its ground offensive ever since the US has started withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan. For the last five days, fierce fighting has broken out in three major cities in the south and west Afghanistan, namely Herat, Lashkar Gah and Kandahar, as Taliban militants seek to seize them from government forces. According to Hindi daily Navbharat Times, the Taliban, on August 2 (Monday) captured a radio station in Lashkar Gah.

Taliban now have their eyes on Mazar-i-Sharif, the biggest city in the north, whose fall would signal the total collapse of government control. At least 11 Taliban members were killed in a B-52 airstrike by US forces in Kapisa province’s Nijrab district on Tuesday morning, TOLO News quoted a provincial police spokesman as saying.

Al-Qaida Will Return to Afghanistan, British Official Says

By Jamie Dettmer
August 13, 2021 08:09 AM
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace warned Friday that Afghanistan risks becoming a failed state and predicted a-Qaida will again thrive in the country.

“I’m absolutely worried that failed states are breeding grounds for those types of people,” he told British broadcaster Sky News.

Hours earlier Wallace announced Britain will dispatch hundreds of combat-ready paratroopers to Kabul to help evacuate more than 4,000 Britons and as many as 2,000 Afghans, who are likely to be killed by the Taliban for working with the British military. Fleeing Fighting, Afghans Flood into Kabul and Gather at Pakistan Border

(via Arab News)

Tens of thousands of people have been flooding into the Afghan capital, Kabul, and gathering at the Pakistan border to escape the escalating fighting between Taliban militants and government forces.

As more provincial capitals fell to the Taliban, Afghanistan's Refugees and Repatriations Ministry said that more than 35,000 families had arrived in the capital over the last week and that officials are struggling to provide them food and shelter.

Afghanistan’s looming collapse
Abubakar Siddique
This week’s rapid-fire events raised the specter of Afghanistan falling to the Taliban, which took over the country’s second and third cities after securing at least 10 provincial capitals.

With an apparent balance of power in its favor, the militants are set to march on Kabul, where Washington and allies are rushing in fresh troops to help evacuate diplomats and other civilians. (See our interactive map of how Taliban control is expanding as the government’s authority shrinks across Afghanistan.)

As Frud Bezhan reports, the Taliban's capture of Herat and Kandahar is a major turning point in the war. “The simultaneous fall of Ghazni, Herat, and Kandahar has definitely shifted the balance of power in favor of the Taliban,” Ali Adili, a researcher in Kabul, told us. “Residents of Kabul feel the inevitability of the city being the next possible target.” Additional story at:

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

Hello friends

The new version of Fldigi (4.1.20) has three new OFDM modes developed by John KL4YFD. We will experiment with the least fast of these, OFDM-500F (about 320 wpm) on the weekend of August 19-22 (program 218). I'm letting you know now, to give you time to download and install Fldigi 4.1.20, in case you want to participate in the OFDM-500F experiment. OFDM-500F is designed for short-hop NVIS HF communications, but we will find out if it works over longer distances.

Last week (program 216) the Sunday 2330-2400 UTC broadcast on 7780 kHz from WRMI was missing Florida due to technical difficulties ("something burned up") at the transmitter.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 216) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and Francisco in Brazil (Saturday 2030 UTC using TIVAR). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK.  The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 217, 12-15 August 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:40  MFSK32: Program preview
 3:16  Remembering Wolf Harranth, OE1WHC*
8:32  MFSK64: Double benefit of solar panels in farm fields*
14:41  This week's images*
28:38  MFSK32: Closing announcements

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 - 08 August 2021

Solar activity was at very low levels. An isolated C1 flare peaked at 09/0004 UTC just after the reporting period from new Region 2853 (N23, L=192, class/area Axx/010 on 08 Aug). The single spot just appeared late on 08 Aug but was preceded by an area of active plage which rotated onto the visible disk on 06 Aug. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 04-05 Aug with a peak flux of 1,570 pfu observed at 05/1725 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming. An enhancement in the IMF field began at 02/0900 UTC, likely from a glancing blow from the 28 Jul CME. The total field reached a peak of 13 nT at 02/1810 UTC, while the Bz component was mostly negative for 1.5 days reaching -13 nT briefly 02/1815 UTC. Solar wind speed at this time was between 300-400 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G1 storm levels on 02 Aug and quiet to active levels on 03 Aug. Quiet conditions were observed on 04 Aug through late on 06 Aug. By the middle of 06 Aug, a likely CIR preceding a weak positive polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) was observed causing total field to increase to a maximum of 13 nT at 07/0620 UTC along with a prolonged period of southward Bz to -9 nT. Solar wind speed briefly increased to near 475 km/s on 07 Aug before declining to below 400 km/s by midday on 08 Aug. The geomagnetic field reached unsettled periods late on 06 Aug through 07 Aug followed by quiet levels on 08 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 August - 04 September 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a chance for further C-class flares through 19 Aug if Region 2853 continues to develop and show activity.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 09-10 Aug, 16-18 Aug, 23-25 Aug, and 02-04 Sep and reach active levels on 24 Aug and 03 Sep due to CH HSS activity.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 July - 01 August 2021

Solar activity was very low under a mostly spotless disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 779 pfu observed at 30/1600 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began with nominal solar wind parameters on 26 Jul through late on 27 Jul. At approximately 27/1830 UTC, the total field began to increase to a peak of 18 nT at 28/1038 UTC followed by an increase in solar wind speed to near 545 km/s as a positive polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) became geoeffective. Solar wind speed slowly diminished to nominal levels through 01 Aug. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled levels on 27 and 29 Jul and quiet to active levels on 28 Jul. The rest of the period was at quiet levels.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 August - 28 August 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a chance for low levels on 05-18 Aug with the return of old Regions 2842 (N25, L=200) and 2845 (S15, L=195).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 02-28 Aug.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 05-06, 10-11, 16-18, 23-25 Aug and active levels on 10, 24 Aug due to CH HSS activity.
