The Transatlantic Centenary Test, Dec 1 -21, 2022

The RSGB is hosting, The Transatlantic Centenary Tests, on the HF bands to commemorate the centenary of the achievement of Amateur Transatlantic communication, during the Transatlantic Tests that were held between 1921 and 1923.

The Tests will run from 1 December 2022 to 31 December 2022.

Why The Transatlantic Centenary Tests?

On 24 December 1922 was the very first amateur signal from Europe was heard in North America; this was from the RSGB station (G)5WS which was established at Wandsworth in South London, as part of the Third Transatlantic Tests.

Unlike the tests of the 1920s, which mostly consisted of one-way communication, the 2022 tests will encourage worldwide two-way communication with UK & CD-based stations. We want to showcase amateur radio in 2022 to celebrate this milestone in the history of the hobby.

Special stations will be activated from the UK by RSGB members and Clubs, using original RSGB call signs from the 1920s but using state-of-the-art modern radio equipment.

The Club Log team has kindly agreed to provide the supporting infrastructure for the Tests.

In anticipation of this centenary celebration, with the assistance of Ofcom (the UK licensing authority), the RSGB has renewed five call signs that they held in the 1920s:

G5WS, used for the 1922 tests – “the first to get across”
G5AT, used for the 1923 tests
G6XX, used for the 1923 tests
G6ZZ, used for the first amateur tests on a moving railway train in 1924
G3DR, Scottish Highlands Call – GM3DR.
These historic call signs are being activated by RSGB members and Clubs, using G5WS, G5AT, G6XX, G6ZZ and G3DR (England), GM5WS (Scotland), GW5WS (Wales), GU5WS (Guernsey), GD5WS (Isle of Man), GJ5WS (Jersey) and GI5WS (Northern Ireland).

New medium wave transmitters in Romania

Relations are tense between Radio Romania and the National Radiocommunication Society. Radio Romania is tired of increasingly poor performances of transmissions made with material over twenty years old.

The Romanian Broadcasting Company (SRR) was, even, on the verge of terminating the contract and taking all technical and legal measures to repair the damage caused by the SNR.

Following complaints, the National Society of Radiocommunications (SNR or Radiocom) has launched a tender for the renewal of 5 medium wave transmitters. The choice of the supplier will be made soon

The main transmitter center affected by the grievances of Radio Romania is the one of Constanta in Valu lui Traian, where a transmitter has been out of order for almost two years. But the concern is also at the level of short-wave transmitters where outages have occurred for years.

Instead of investing in equipment replacement and upgrading, SNR invested in other highly controversial areas, according to “Cet? Aueanul” investigations. just”.

The threats posed by the Romanian Broadcasting Society are resolved by the upcoming acquisition of 5 new medium-wave transmitters, 3 of which will be installed in Valu lui Traian:

1 25 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 909 kHz for Radio Constanta;
1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 1314 kHz for Antenna Satelor;
1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 1458 kHz to replace Radio Romana Actualitäti transmitter that has been currently out of service for two years.

The other two transmitters will be installed in Oradea Rontau for Radio Romana Actualitäti on 603 kHz (1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast) and in Bucharest Her?str?u for Antenna Satelor on 603 KHz (1 25 kW AM transmitter – DRM Simulcast).

In addition to these 5 OM transmitters and a solution for OC transmitters and antennas, the Romanian Radiodiffusion Society is also waiting for the refurbishment of all FM transmitters and the urgent start of the DAB+.

On its part, SRTv demanded the completion of the full commissioning of the DVB-T2 digital television, delayed for almost two years.

Russian shelling results in transmitter outages

November 24, 2022
After the nationwide shelling by the Russian troops at 23.11.2022, UR-1 (Ukraine, UR1 Pershiy kanal) is silent on 873, 1278 and 1404 kHz. Only 657 is working but with much less power than usual.
László Tringer (2022-11-24)

On 26 November from 00.01 news in Ukrainian confirmed on 873 (here under muslim sermon), 1386 and 1404 (here under Romania). No traces on 657 and 1278. When I am in Sofia (southern of Balkan Mountain) the signal on 873 is strong but when I am in north of Balkan is tiny).

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 November 2022

Solar activity was at very low levels on 24, 26, and 27 Nov. Low levels were reached on 21-23 and 25 Nov. Regions 3149 (N21, L=163, class/area Dsi/170 on 22 Nov) and 3151 (S16, L=153, class/area Cao/080 on 26 Nov) produced the majority of the C-class flares. The largest was a C7/Sf at 22/0727 UTC from Region 3151. Associated with the C7 flare was a CME first observed in SOHO LASCO C2 imagery at ecliptic with a possible glancing blow on 27 Nov. However, no definitive signature could be seen in solar wind data.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal-moderate levels on 21-26 Nov. High levels occurred on 27 Nov, with a peak flux of 2,400 pfu 27/1730 UTC, due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. Solar wind parameters began under the influence of a weak negative polarity CH HSS. Solar wind speed ranged from 400-460 km/s on 21 Nov followed by a decrease to nominal levels through late on 24 Nov. Total field was initially around 11 nT, but decreased to under 5 nT by late on 21 Nov. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 21 Nov and quiet levels on 22-23 Nov. Around 24/1800 UTC, total field and solar wind speed began to increase again as a positive polarity CH HSS moved into a geoeffective position. The total field increased to a maximum of 15 nT at 24/2320 UTC while solar wind speed increased to a maximum of 624 km/s at 26/1845 UTC. Positive polarity CH HSS influence continued through the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled on 24 Nov and quiet to active levels on 25-27 Nov.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 November - 24 December 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares are possible on 29 Nov-12 Dec with the return of old Regions 3140 (N25, L=326) and 3141 (N14, L=318).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be is expected to reach high levels on 28 Nov-07 Dec and again on 24 Dec due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be unsettled to active levels on 28 Nov-03 Dec, 08-09 Dec, 17-18 Dec, and 22-24 Dec with G1 effects.

FCC Commissioner Advocates for Preservation of AM Radio

At the NAFB Convention, Simington said AM radio is an "indispensable resource"

BY ELLE KEHRES
Published November 18, 2022

FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington met with members of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting during their 79th annual convention on Nov. 16. In his remarks, Simington emphasized the importance of AM radio and outlined the steps needed to ensure its future in a changing market.

Simington began his remarks with a more personal anecdote. He said he grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, where “besides the trade papers, there was no media institution more trusted to inform us about all we needed to know than AM radio.”

“AM radio was for us then, and is for the more than three million farmers across the U.S. now, an indispensable resource,” he said.

Simington said AM radio is the “essential spine” of the Emergency Alert System and “lets you know what’s happening not just globally, but locally — from school closures and traffic delays to city council and county management meetings and high school sports games.”

Shortwave Radiogram, November 19-22

Hello friends

The WINB signal consists of five kilohertz of DRM voice content, and five kilohertz of unspecified data, if indeed any data is actually transmitted. Last week the voice segment was in the lower five kilohertz. Reception and decoding of the transmission are usually difficult. Most listeners use remote KiwiSDRs in conjunction with the Dream software. The KiwiSDR should be set to IQ mode. Receivers in the southwest and southeast USA have the best chance of adequate reception, although sometimes European receivers have success.

Last week, listeners reported some problems with the reception of the Monday 0800-0830 UTC broadcast. I blissfully slept through it: For the first time in several months, I fell back to sleep after the alarm beeped at 0715 UTC (2:15 am EST here).

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 278)  is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. An analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.
The first news item in this weekend's show, about the Swedish wooden dolls that sing in harmony, ends with an MFSK32 image of the wooden dolls, followed by a few seconds of the sound of their singing.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 279, 18-22 November 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:33  MFSK32: Program preview
2:37  MFSK32: Wooden dolls that sing in harmony*
8:04  MFSK64: Why go back to the Moon?
11:44  MFSK64: This week's images*

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 November 2022

Solar activity was at low to high levels. Low levels were observed on 08-10 Nov and again on 13 Nov. Moderate levels occurred on 11-12 Nov due to M1 flare activity from Region 3141 (N14, L=318, class/area Eki/610 on 11 Nov). These flares were an M1/1f at 11/0714 UTC, an M1/Sn at 11/1140 UTC, and an M1/Sf at 12/0018 UTC as well as a total of 41 C-flares. High levels occurred on 07 Nov (reported on the previous weekly) due to an M5 flare from Region 3141 at 07/0011 UTC along with an associated Type II radio sweep and a 740 sfu Tenflare.

Region 3141 continued to exhibit growth through 11 Nov and developed into a beta-gamma-delta magnetic class on 10-11 Nov before slowly decaying to near 270 millionths by 13 Nov. Region 3140 (N25, L=326, class/area Dai/230 on 13 Nov) began to exhibit growth and development of trailing spots beginning on 11 Nov and was responsible for 12 C-flares. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the reporting period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 07 and 10-11 Nov due to weak transient activity. The peak flux was 9,400 pfu at 07/0925 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels. Solar wind parameters indicated a possible weak transient on 07-08 Nov. Total field increased to near 15 nT while the Bz component deflected southward from approximately 07/0845-1745 reaching a maximum of -15 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G1 (Minor) storming on 07 Nov followed by quiet to active levels on 08 Nov and quiet to unsettled levels on 09 Nov. Quiet conditions were observed on 10 Nov under a nominal solar wind regime. On 11-13 Nov a weak, negative polarity, CH HSS became geoeffective. Solar wind speed increased to near 490 km/s by midday on 12 Nov. Total field increased to near 14 nT late on 11 Nov before declining to near 6-7 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled levels on 11-13 Nov.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 November - 10 December 2022

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period (14 Nov-10 Dec). There is a chance for M-class flares (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) and a slight chance for X-class flares (R3-Strong) on 14-16 Nov and again on 28 Nov-10 Dec due to the flare potential of Regions 3140 and 3141.

There is a slight chance for an S1 (Minor) solar radiation storm on 14-17 Nov due to potential significant flare activity from Regions 3140 and 3141.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 21-29 Nov and again on 02-05 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 15-16 Nov, 20-22 Nov, 24-28 Nov, 01-03 Dec, and 08-09 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 October - 06 November 2022

Solar activity was at very low to high levels during the period. Low levels were observed on 31 Oct through 04 Nov with the majority of the low to mid-level C-class activity produced by Regions 3135 (N27, L=063, class/area Eao/190 on 31 Oct), 3131 (N23, L=111, class/area Cso/190 on 27 Oct), and 3141 (N15, L=319, class/area Eko/460 on 06 Nov). Region 3141 rotated onto the visible disk on 04 Nov as a large bipolar spot group, however, the magnetic classification has been difficult to ascertain due to possible artifacts in the magnetogram imagery. Very low levels were observed on 05 Nov. By late on 06 Nov, an M5.2 flare occurred from Region 3141 reaching a peak at 07/0011 UTC. Associated with the flare was a Type II radio sweep (927 km/s), a 740 sfu Tenflare, and likely a CME off the SE as was evident by coronal darkening in GOES/SUVI 195 imagery beginning at 07/0008 UTC. Analysis of any associated CME is pending as imagery becomes available. Other CMEs preceding this event did not have an Earth-directed component.

No proton events were observed in geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels throughout the period due to CH HSS influences. The peak flux was 8,980 pfu observed at 06/1515 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels due to multiple CH HSSs. Solar wind speed began the period near 500 km/s with total field near 5 nT. Solar wind speed slowly receded to near 410 km/s by late on 01 Nov. By midday on 02 Nov, total field and solar wind speed began to increase once again to near 10 nT and 560 km/s. Solar wind speed decreased to near 460 km/s on 03 Nov before increasing once again to near 580 km/s late on 03 Nov to early on 04 Nov. Solar wind speeds slowly decreased to background levels through 06 Nov. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled levels on 31 Oct. Increased to quiet to active levels on 01-02 Nov and quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 03 Nov. Quiet to active levels were observed on 04 Nov followed by quiet to unsettled conditions on 05 Nov and ended at quiet levels on 06 Nov.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 November - 03 December 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the forecast period with a slight chance for further M-class flares (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) on 07-16 Nov due primarily to the flare potential of Region 3141.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 07-09 Nov and again on 26 Nov-03 Dec due to HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 07-12 Nov, 18-20 Nov, and 23 Nov-03 Dec with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 18 Nov, 25 Nov, and 30 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS activity.
