Radio Romania International will celebrate Listeners' Day on November 7

Radio Romania International Short Wave Transmitters Installed near Ciopali in Tiganesti. Transmitters Power: 300 kW.

Sunday, the 7th of November 2021, will be Listeners' Day on Radio Romania International, celebrated a week after the Romanian Radio Day marked on the 1st of November. 2021, just like the previous year, has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has profoundly changed our lives, keeping us apart from family and friends and influencing our way of spending free time.

Bombarded with all sorts of news and information, we realized that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between true and false stories. During the pandemic, public radio and TV stations have been doing their best to offer quality journalism and reliable information. This effort has been repaid, as most people have returned to public stations as their main source of reliable information.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, Friday-Sunday

Hello friends

If you are participating in Halloween festivities this weekend, have a good a safe time.

This weekend, most of Europe will change clocks back one hour. This Sunday (31 October), transmissions via WRMI will be one hour earlier by European local time, but the same by UTC. (In most of North America, we will not change our clocks back until 7 November.)

The computer problems I reported last week are resolved, now that I installed a new 2 TB drive to replace a malfunctioning 1 TB HDD.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 227, 1330 UTC Saturday) are provided by Ralf in Germany (it was available live on YouTube) and Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 228, 28-31 October 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:38  MFSK32: Program preview
2:43  Plans for commercial "business park in space"*
9:30  MFSK64: Discovery of exoplanet in another galaxy?*
14:52  This week's images*
28:30  MFSK32: Closing announcements

“This is a Music Show” Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK-64 text and image near the end of the broadcast.  It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas). Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.com  www.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/    @ThisIsAMusicSho  https://thisisamusicshow.com

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Encore-Radio Tumbril classical music program

Dear Listener,

Help keep Encore on the air:
Encore is a one-man operation. WRMI and Channel 292 are very generous with their air-time but Encore still costs me around 200 Dollars/Euros a month to broadcast.

I'm happy to go on giving my time and such expertise as I have to the project of broadcasting classical music on Shortwave - it's a passion - but I need some help with the costs or Encore will have to stop.
There is a PayPal donation button now on the homepage of the website - www.tumbril.co.uk - which folks can use if they want to. If PayPal is no good for you then send me an email and we'll sort something else out.
Thank you.

(This bulletin is sent by Bcc to the many hundreds of listeners who have been in contact with Encore over the last two and a half years of broadcasting Encore.)

Regular Broadcast times of Encore are:
10:00 - 11:00 UTC Saturday 6070 kHz Channel 292 to Europe - Simulcast on 9670 kHz

One final DRM Test from KTWR before winter schedules

KTWR QSL

Hi Everyone,

While we are very close to the B21 broadcast season, we have one more DRM test to try this season. We want to verify that we can broadcast dual language services with our automated playout system. (Years ago, we proved that we could broadcast dual language services with a more manual approach.)

On 30 October, the English block to China at 1100-1130UTC will be replaced with Mandarin and Cantonese. The English part of our Japanese broadcast at 1200-1230UTC will be replaced with Japanese and Korean. This test will be only for one day. Speech audio will be computer-generated, so it may or may not sound slightly unnatural. Feel free to let us know how the audio quality turned out.

Running dual languages requires KTWR to use MSC=64QAM instead of our normal 16QAM. This will require a better SNR to decode than what is currently required. Current solar conditions appear to be

Sudan's military dissolves the country’s transitional government and declares a state of emergency

Army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced a state of emergency in Sudan hours after Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was placed under house arrest along with other senior government officials, according to local media. The arrests come after a failed coup attempt in September and weeks of rising tensions between Sudan’s civilian and military leaders, the AP reported. Protesters took to the streets in Khartoum, with reports of gunfire and injuries.

Three people were killed after Sudan's military seizes power in a coup
By Khalid Abdela
KHARTOUM, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Sudan's military seized power from a transitional government on Monday, and soldiers killed at least three people and wounded 80 as street protests broke out against the coup.

The leader of the takeover, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the military-civilian Sovereign Council that had been set up to guide the country to democracy following the overthrow of long-ruling autocrat Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising two years ago.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 - 24 October 2021

Solar activity was very low. Background x-ray enhancement began on 20 Oct as new Regions 2886 (S19, L= 338, class/area Hsx/185 on 19 Oct) and 2887 (S25, L=278, class/area Dki/440 on 24 Oct) emerged around the SE limb on 17 Oct and 21 Oct, respectively. Region 2886 was quiet and stable while Region 2887 produced the majority of the B-class flare activity. The largest flare of the period was a B9.6 flare at 22/1838 UTC from a region just beyond the East limb. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 433 pfu at 18/1700 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began under the influence of a weak transient with total field reaching 13 nT and the Bz component reaching -8 nT late on 17 Oct. Solar wind speed ranged from 325-385 km/s during this time.

Slightly perturbed conditions continued on 19-20 Oct as a solar sector boundary crossing followed by a co-rotating interaction region preceded the onset of a negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The solar wind speed increased to 555 km/s early on 21 Oct. Nominal solar wind conditions returned by midday on 23 Oct. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 18-19 Oct, quiet to unsettled conditions on 20 Oct, and quiet levels thereafter.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 October - 20 November 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with a slight chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares on 25 Oct - 03 Nov as Region 2887 transits across the visible disk. Very low levels are expected from 04 Nov -15 Nov. Very low to low levels are expected again on 16-20 Nov with the return of Region 2887.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the forecast period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 27-30 Oct, 06-08 Nov, and 15-16 Nov and active levels on 06 Nov due to CH HSS activity.

Shortwave Radiogram, Saturday/Sunday programming

Hello friends

This weekend's Shortwave Radiogram was almost a replay of last week's Shortwave Radiogram. The hard disk drive on my PC is in the process of failing, working only intermittently, and triggering "S.M.A.R.T. status bad" warnings on boot-up. Fortunately, Windows 10 and program files are on another drive, key files needed to produce the show are backed up, and things are working just well enough for program 227 to go on the air.

This weekend I will buy a solid state drive and attempt to install it. If that installation does not go well, next week's show might be a replay of this week's show.

It's almost the time for the year for clocks to change to winter time. Europe will be first, on October 31. Starting on that day, broadcasts via WRMI will be one hour earlier by local time in most of Europe.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 226, Friday 1300 UTC) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 227, 21-24 October, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:40  MFSK32: Program preview
2:43  Vikings lived in North America by at least the year 1021
6:08  MFSK64: Strategies for defense against asteroids
12:28  This week's images (nine this week)
28:28  MFSK32: Closing announcements

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 11 - 17 October 2021

Solar activity was very low with B-class flare activity on 11-12, and 15-17 Oct. Low levels of solar activity were observed on 13-14 Oct due to C-class flare activity. Region 2885 (N15, L=171, class/area=Cro/20 on 13 Oct) produced three C-class flares this period: a C1/Sf flare at 13/2204 UTC, a C2 flare at 14/0134 UTC, and a C1flare at 14/0304 UTC.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels on 12 Oct due to the passage of a CME from 09 Oct. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 17 Oct, also due to the passage of a transient feature. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 11, 13, and16 Oct, while quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 October - 13 November 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26-28 Oct. Normal to moderate flux levels are expected to continue.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 18-19 Oct, and 06 Nov due to the influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be mostly quiet or quiet to unsettled.

Monitoring the Mini Transat yacht race

(photo Wikipedia)

Heard the broadcast from Issoudun for the Mini Transat yacht race today

(11 Oct) at 1500 UTC on 13735 kHz. Similar format to the transmission I heard for the race in August 2020 which was only in French waters due to Covid. SIO 353

1501 UTC music followed by a man in French (mentioning La Palma and Novembre). 1503: Lady in English with French accent with the weather (meteo) forecast for today 11th October until 1508 then music.

Silence until 1515 then OM in French again. Off at 1530 UTC recheck.

On 13735 again from 1600 UTC, but in DRM.

This time the race is from France via La Palma (Canary Islands) to Guadeloupe = 4050 nautical miles. It started in France 26 September.

Arriving in La Palma from 3rd October. Departing La Palma 29th October, arriving in Guadeloupe from 9th November. See:

https://www.minitransat.fr/en/

There's also a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LaMiniTransat

13735 kHz is only registered on HFCC until 29th October 2021. Unsure if broadcasts are daily (or only if yachts are still at sea? They're arriving in Santa Cruz de La Palma today re the Facebook page)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 - 10 October 2021

Solar activity was very low over 04-06 Oct. Low levels of solar activity were observed on 07-08 and 10 Oct, and moderate solar activity was observed on 09 Oct. Region 2882 (N17, L=157, class/area=Dho/280 on 09 Oct) produced the majority of the C-class flare activity in addition to the largest event of the period, an M1/2b flare (with Type-II and IV radio emissions) at 09/0638 UTC. An associated full-halo CME signature was observed in LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 09/0712 UTC and is likely to arrive at Earth around midday on 11 Oct.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal and normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 07-09 Oct, quiet to unsettled on 04-06 Oct, and quiet to active on 10 Oct.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 11 October - 06 November 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 20-21 Oct. Normal and normal to moderate levels are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels on 11 Oct, and G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 12 Oct, due to the anticipated arrival of a full-halo CME from 09 Oct. Active conditions are expected on 19 Oct due to the influence of a recurrent positive polarity CH HSS. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

WBCQ begins new program, Cruisin Radio

Cruisin Radio’s Arthur Burton and WBCQ’s Allan Weiner are both people with a long reputation of being pirates at some time in their past, albeit on different sides of the pond, and in Arthur’s case even present, so when two pirates join together does that make Maine’s WCBQ Short Wave now a sort of super pirate?

Starting on 1 October, Cruisin Radio will be doing weekly hour broadcasts every Friday initially, for two months at 2300 UTC on 6160 kHz, that will be 7pm EDT and 12 Midnight in the UK during October, but that changes when those times go back an hour when the clocks change at the end of October.

Cruisin Radio is an Internet station of some years standing, started and run by Arthur Burton, a pirate of many decades experience, going back to the 1970s when he started on Radio Jackie and later Sun Radio London. He was on Nova Italy, RFL, and appeared on the shipborne Radio Caroline in the '80s. Cruisin Radio thrives on quality in both music and presentation and is on the net 24/7 as well as Short Wave at times. E-QSL’s will be available by going to the Cruisin Radio contact page:

Amsterdam Radio Days with Jonathan Marks and Andy Sennitt

Video of Jonathan Marks and Andy Sennitt at the Amsterdam Radio Day 2011 on the story of Media Network uploaded to YouTube yesterday.

The channel, Ben's Radio Visuals, was launched on September 30.

"Since 1999 I have been filming predominantly radio DJ's, but also radio stations, quite frequently. Personally, I love to watch a DJ at work.

Also, I visited the Dutch Zeezender/Radiodays and filmed all the interviews. With all that I have built up quite a large video archive throughout the years. On this channel, I will be sharing the material that I have in my archive... Kind regards,
Ben Meijering (aka LosGoud)"

Many other offshore radio-related videos are now there.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 September - 03 October 2021

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Low levels were reached on 28 Sep - 01 Oct and 02-03 Oct. Region 2877 (S18, L=327, Class/Area Dao/200 on 30 Sep) produced the strongest flare of the period, a C2/Sn at 29/2156 UTC. Other activity included a C1 flare at 28/0634 UTC. Associated with the flare was a Type II radio sweep (534 km/s) and an partial-halo CME signature first seen in SOHO/LASCO imagery around 28/0634 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested onset at Earth late on 30 Sep - 01 Oct. The region produced two more low-level, impulsive, C-class flares before rotating around the SW limb on 03 Oct. Associated with the final C-flare was a Tenflare of 100 sfu at 03/0523 UTC. The remaining numbered active regions on the visible disk were relatively quiet
and stable.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active conditions. Active conditions were observed 30 Sep and 01-02 Oct in response to the arrival of a CME that left the Sun on 28 Sep. Total field peaked at 14 nT around 30/1820 UTC. The onset of the magnetic cloud was observed after 01/1305 UTC and the Bz component was predominantly positive over the next 18 hours. Solar wind speeds began increasing from ~380 km/s midway through 30 Sep and peaked at ~560 km/s at 01/0120 UTC before gradually decreasing towards nominal levels over the next two days. Unsettled conditions were observed on 27-28 Sep due to influence from a positive polarity CH HSS. The remainder of the summary period was at quiet levels.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 October - 30 October 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a chance for C-class flares over 04-10 Oct.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate to high levels. High levels are likely on 20-21 Oct in response to recurrent coronal hole influence. The remainder of the outlook period is likely to be at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Active levels are likely 19 Oct and unsettled levels are likely on 05-06 Oct, 08-09 Oct, 18 Oct, 20-21 Oct, and 25 Oct. All increases in geomagnetic activity are in response to anticipated influence from multiple, recurrent, CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be quiet.
