Radio Netherlands improves program info on website

We’re pleased to announced that our English website now contains a complete 24-hour guide to our programmes, which should be of help to those listening via satellite or online. Select Listening guide on our Home Page, then Times and frequencies. Click on your region of the world, and you will find that the programmes that are available via shortwave are on a shaded background with frequency details. We hope this will make it easier to find out what’s on, and where to listen.

Minivan Radio closes shortwave service

Minivan Radio, the independent station that has been broadcasting on shortwave to the Maldives for several years, has ended its shortwave transmissions. The reason is that the Maldivian government has revealed the draft contract it will offer to private companies who wish to broadcast on FM radio.
The contract would regulate private broadcasting in the continued absence of a Broadcasting Bill. The Ministry of Information hope a contract can be agreed with companies in time to meet the government’s target of private broadcasting by World Press Freedom Day on May 3.
The media community has been critical of the draft bill for being too vague and not guaranteeing freedoms. Fathimath Shaheeda of Minivan Radio confirmed that substantial concerns remained with the bill, and, by extension, the contract on offer. The Information Ministry is committed to negotiating a contract that is agreeable to broadcasters, but accepts that this might take time. Shaheeda is concerned that the tight government deadline of May 3 may force broadcasters into contracts in which all their concerns have not been resolved.
The government has announced that there will be only 5 FM frequencies available for private broadcasters. This further increases the pressure on broadcasters to accept the government contracts, or risk losing out on a licence to competitors. Some broadcasters have started preparations for FM broadcasting. On Sunday 25 March, Minivan Radio stopped broadcasting on shortwave, in anticipation of being granted an FM licence promptly.
Until Minivan Radio receives an FM licence, its programmes are now only available via its website. This restricts the access of listeners in remote islands where internet connections are rare. To make matters worse the Ministry of Information has so far failed to provide information on how to apply for an FM licence and one of the five frequencies. There are also legal problems with the contract system. Even if contracts can be negotiated that are acceptable to government and broadcasters, they will not be binding in the long term.
It remains to be seen whether Minivan Radio will be successful in obtaining an FM licence, and under what conditions.

Focus on San Francisco radio scene

RADIO WAVES, by Ben Fong-Torres

For those interested in the radio format happenings of the San Francisco Bay Area, this story covers not simply the activities of AM and FM radio, but semi-interviews of and comments by the DJs that are making things happen. In this article, Gene Nelson tells why he's back and where he has been; The San Francisco Sound, on KTRB, continues, but on an abbreviated scale; and a few other interesting items. And, no, I'm not connected with any of the above or below, aside from growing up listening to KTRB in my home town of Modesto, California.

Shortwave stations begin A07 schedules tomorrow

A reminder that the A07 High Frequency broadcast season starts tomorrow at 0100 UTC. Like most international broadcasters, Radio Netherlands Worldwide is changing some frequencies. Programming in our Dutch service to Europe remains at the same local time, so Dutch-language transmissions to Europe move an hour earlier in terms of UTC. Our English service makes the usual two changes for North America - the evening transmission to the west coast moves from 0500 to 0400 UTC, and the morning transmission to the east coast at 1200 UTC moves an hour earlier to 1100 UTC.
The complete engineering schedule for the new period up to 31 May is available on our website. A modified schedule will be effective from 1 June - 31 August when additional frequencies are used for Dutch to Europe.

Radio Netherlands program preview 24 March - 30 March 2007

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 24 March

*** Weekend Connection ***

Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.

It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all!

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1000 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1200 (Eastern N America), 1400 & 1530 (South Asia), 1800, 1930 & 2030 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0500 (Western N America)

*** Vox Humana ***

"Treasure on Earth"

The charismatic church in Ghana offers great material wealth to its believers. What is preached is Prosperity Gospel, and it can have a very literal meaning. God will make you rich, but first you must give generously to your church.

This troubles producer Kofi Owusu of Joy FM in Accra. While being a committed believer in the charismatic church, he is uncomfortable about the repeated requests for the congregation to make offerings. He explores the growing popularity of Prosperity Gospel in "Treasure on Earth."
The program is part of the international documentary series Global Perspective 2007 focusing on the theme: Belief.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1227 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0527 (Western N America)
Repeated: Sun 1400 (South Asia), Sun 1900 (N America, Africa)

SUNDAY 25 March

*** Amsterdam Forum ***

Tune in for an exclusive interview with former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

How far is religion shaping America's approach to the world? How much influence does it have on the Bush administration over America's foreign policy? And how should America deal with violent Islamist extremists?

These are some of the issues Ms Albright tackles in her most recent book, The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs.

She argues that religion and politics are inseparable but that their partnership can be a force for peace as well as conflict.

Of course, feel free to have your say on the topic at www.radionetherlands.nl/features/amsterdamforum/.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1004 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1204 (Eastern N America), 1504 (South Asia), 1804 & 2004 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0500 (Western N America)

Think of global health issues and certain well-publicised diseases probably spring to mind. But there are other diseases, and other issues that don't so often get our attention.

The Research File meets four people who are active in such areas: validating cheap, existing technologies to improve women's health; breathing new life into old treatments for neglected illnesses; finding practical solutions to a range of health problems in Bangladesh; and campaigning for a more environmentally friendly healthcare industry.

If a robot has the capacity to learn and to remember, does switching them off amount to killing? When does a machine achieve personhood? What do we learn about ourselves when we build robots? And what do robots teach us about God?

Broadcast stations to begin summer schedules March 25

It's that time of the year again, when broadcast station's begin their summer A07 schedule period.
Unfortunately, for the first week (and on occasion beyond) it can be a time of madness, interference and confusion, as stations jockey for the best positions and adjust their summer frequencies.
Over the next few days, I will be posting selected A07 schedules, both English and non-English. As frequency or hour adjustments deem necessary, they too will be posted.
Let's hope this will be an excellent DX season, wherever the bands take you....and just think in October we'll brace for the winter season!
