The Cross Radio remains active on shortwave

After several recent email queries on the current status of The Cross Radio, thanks to Ron Howard's recent logging and confirmation, we can confirm it is currently active on shortwave.

4755.53, PMA-The Cross Radio. Feb 21, 2013. Decent reception and with preaching from 1127 to 1145. Nice station ID and into contemporary Christian songs until off at 1159 with no announcements, regularly signing off at this time now.

We are so happy to hear that our transmission is clear in California. In the last month we have introduced a tone into our daily script that turns on and shuts off the transmitter automatically for the SW hours of transmission. It's working very well.

We give thanks to God for keeping our radio station going and for the islands to be able to hear their station transmitting from Pohnpei.

The Cross Radio revises broadcast schedule

Special thanks to Ron Howard for keeping me updated on the revised operating schedule for The Cross Radio. After extended antenna problems, Galcom engineers have assisted the station in returning to the air. The Cross Radio is a ministry of Pacific Missionary Aviation, on the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. Station Manager, Sylvia Kalau advises listeners the station is currently operating for the following tentative schedule.

4755.44, The Cross Radio clearly off the air Feb 7 during checks at 1318 + 1348 + 1403 + 1429 + 1443. Jim Young (CA) heard them last night (Feb 7 UT): "The Cross was in very early tonight, first heard audio nearly 30 minutes earlier at 0642! At 0713 they are strong! Measured frequency tonight is 4755.452". Will have to see what tomorrow brings. Am happy that I already have two nice verifications for this one!

Religious broadcaster, The Cross, from Pohnpei, on 4755, is now running 24-hrs, simulcasting the FM service on 88.5 Here in Melbourne, really good signals from as early as 0700, right through our night to fade-out at around 1935.

The shortwave facility has recently been reactivated and upgraded with the commissioning of a new antenna and feeder.

Looking at postings in hobby news groups worldwide, reception has been widely reported in the Americas in the span from around 0605 to 1300, even on the East Coast!

I'd be interested in knowing the overall span of reception at your location, especially in Europe and Asia.

Pohnpei is relatively close to northern Australia, sitting in the UTC+11 time zone, not far from Papua New Guinea.

4755.45, PMA The Cross Radio (Pohnpei), 0710-0736, 2/2/2011, English. Apparent syndicated religious program with talk by a man. Request for donations at 0720 along with an unintelligible web site. Joined by a woman at 0721 with info about their ministry and request for funds. Contemporary religious vocal music 0724 to 0736 tune out. Weak signal with fading and increasing local noise made program content extremely difficult to understand. Heard on my PNG/South Pacific oriented wire. At the same time also heard weak audio on SIBC's 5019.9 carrier. (Jim Evans, TN)

Thanks for getting the word out about the reactivation of the Cross Radio. Sent this log thru to Cumbre, but not posted there yet, so thought I would send this on to you directly. Nice that this station now makes it over to the east coast.

4755.44, The Cross Radio. Randomly from 1313 to tune out at 1502, Feb 3. Non-stop contemporary Christian songs (soul, pop, ballads, etc.) in English. IDs (local time checks, frequencies [both FM and SW] and often given by young girls [Angel, Tanya, etc.]) IDs given near top and bottom-of-the hour, but seems their clock is off by 1-2 minutes.

If only 1 KW, then the antenna they have been working on for some years now is really fabulous! (Ron Howard, CA)

1330 – young girl: “Hi. My name is .. I listen to the Cross Radio”

1431 - young girl: "Hi. This is . . (gives name). The world is tuned
to ... the Cross Radio. You will like it"

1558 – young girl: “This is . . . on 88.5 FM”

1602 – man: “This is the Cross Radio. Please stay with us. We will be back in a minute” (open carrier for about a minute, then continued with their religious songs).

4755.45, PMA "The Cross Radio", 1152-1325, Feb. 2. Programming consisted mostly of ballads, with occasional announcements by very professional sounding male announcer. I suspect this may have been a syndicated Christian music program. Caught their ID just before the top-of-the hour by a young sounding female, "You are listening to the Cross Radio." Despite freezing rain at the time, this is the strongest I have heard them, and I was surprised that they were still audible as late as 1325 UTC, although the peak in reception was around 1200. A report by a Japanese listener in a newsgroup advised that the religious broadcaster "Cross Radio Pohnpei" is again being heard on shortwave, using 4755. and observed on Jan 29 from 0946 until signoff at 0934. Pohnpei is one of four States in the Pacific, part of the Federated States of Micronesia, administer by the USA. The broadcaster had commenced shortwave broadcasts some time ago but had not been heard until now.

Solomon Islands
5019.88, SIBC. Randomly from 1319 to 1440* (sign-off)UTC, Jan 31. Extended schedule. Poor to almost fair in QRN, in Tok Pisin language. Mostly playing pop island songs to interviews, weather. Usual English sign-off at 1438 announcement, followed by national anthem. Best in LSB due to Cuba interference from 5025. Per Sei-ichi Hasegawa's recent reports, Vanuatu has gone to 24 hour broadcasting and The Cross has been reactivated, so the Pacific is finally becoming more active on shortwave.

As noted from my earlier EDXP Newsletter posting, religious shortwave broadcaster Cross Radio via Pohnpei, Micronesia has reactivated, and has been observed on 4755 kHz to the 0934 sign-off. According to their website, Canadian technicians arrived, " last week of January 2011 to work on our transmitters for our shortwave radio." I will post their schedule and additional information, as it becomes available.
