Shortwave Radiogram, Program 390

 

Hello friends,

Here in northern Virginia, we have just endured two days of high temperatures below freezing. This is unusual for us, but typical for many of you living farther north. Tomorrow, our typical winter weather, reaching above freezing during the day, returns. And by Sunday, hints of spring.

Producing this week's Shortwave Radiogram has been much easier than last week. I am getting more used to the software that runs under Windows 11. The programs that I use primarily are Fldigi (of course), Audacity, UltraEdit, MS Paint, and Snipping Tool. 

I still have to find solutions for a few quirks in Windows 11. Firefox windows and even instances of Fldigi will disappear, not to be found in the Task Bar or anywhere else. I know the Firefox windows are running because if they have audio (eg a KiwiSDR), I can hear it. I can access some of the hidden Firefox pages by using Firefox History. Frequent trips to Task Manager are required to clean up all those hidden but running apps and pages. 

And Audacity will claim that there is insufficient memory to paste a small segment of audio. So I have to save the Audacity file to a wav file and build on to that.  Sorry to bore you with these details!

Please note that the Saturday 2300-2330 UTC transmission is now (or at least least week was) on three frequencies: 7570, 7780 and 9455 kHz, all from WRMI Florida.  The 9455 transmitter seems especially to offer DX opportunities.

Hello friends,

I hope you have been able to withstand our stretch of cold and snow (unusual in some places) during the past few days in North America. At our house, the outdoor thermometer showed 10°F/-12°C during the early morning hours -- not as bad as many places, but about as cold as we have ever been.

Last week's experiment with Olivia 64-2000 and Olivia 32-2000 was interesting. It was difficult to find signals that were poor enough that MFSK32 showed errors, while Olivia 64-2000 was 100% (or nearly so). But I have audio of two examples, which you can access, and from which you can decode. The first is January 19, 0330 UTC, 9265 kHz from WINB Pennsylvania. The signal is very weak because the signal is too close (200 km) to my receiver in northern Virginia.  The second is January 19, 2300 UTC, 7570 kHz from WRMI Florida. Here, the reception is challenging via an SDR in Bermuda because Voice of (North) Korea is co-channel and stronger.

Shortwave Radiogram Program 385

 Hello friends,

With poor reception in many locations in recent weeks, we will transmit two Olivia modes that often survive weak signals and/or interference: Olivia 64-2000 and Olivia 32-2000. The 2000 refers to the bandwidth in Hz, so make sure your receiver can accommodate these modes extending from 500 to 2500 Hz above or below the carrier frequency. The SSB and AM modes on most receivers should be adequate. Also, these Olivia modes work better if Fldigi's squelch (SQL) is off.

You will notice that these Olivia modes are slow: about 24 wpm for Olivia 64-2000 and 48 wpm for Olivia 32-2000.

Wishing you poor reception this week, so you can see how these Olivia modes cope with adversity.

Reception was good, in most parts of the world, this past Wednesday at 1330-1400 UTC on 15770 kHz from WRMI Florida. Unfortunately, the WRMI transmitter went off the air shortly after 1330 UTC. Then it came back for the first MFSK64 image, the flags of Norway. Then it quit again for the rest of the half hour.   Hoping for better luck on 15770 this Wednesday.

Hello friends,

Our thoughts are with any of our listeners, and everyone else, affected by the terrible fires in southern California.

Here in Arlington, Virginia, snow is an increasingly infrequent visitor, but we had a good snowstorm on January 6. Well, some of us who like snow think it was good. We measured about 8 inches, or 20 cm, of  depth in our front yard. I shoveled the sidewalk parallel to the street (as required by the County) on Monday, and dug out the car on Tuesday. As I get older, it seems the snow gets heavier, and the aches after shoveling become more prominent. Funny how that happens.

Fortunately, there was no disruption to our electric power. Amateur radio, and monitoring radio communications, were good companions while cooped up inside. My antennas have survived the heavy winds during the days following the snowstorm.

This time of year, I prefer the painting of the week, that closes each show, to be relevant to the season. So, for example, no deciduous trees full of green leaves. Many of the paintings that meet this criterion in January and February picture falling snow. The problem for Shortwave Radiogram is that listeners decoding the image may think that they see the noise interference typical of shortwave reception, when actually it is falling snow. Accordingly, I will avoid paintings depicting falling snow, unless it is an irresistible painting showing falling snow.

Hello friends

I hope the holidays of December are unfolding well for you. Activities in our house might result in repeat broadcasts at the end of December, or early January. I will let you know.

Here in the Washington DC area, pirate shortwave broadcasters have been active in their usual 6900-7000 kHz neighborhood. They've been audible even during the daylight hours, indicating that they are not far away. One of the stations, in a synthesized voice, informed listeners that it is transmitting in C-QUAM stereo. It advised using the QAM mode on KiwiSDR receivers. I did that, and indeed it was stereo. It was a weird sort of stereo, wavering quickly between left and right channel. But interesting to listen to.

Hello friends,

WRMI in Florida reports that its power has been restored after Hurricane Milton passed through. But there is some damage in its antenna field. We can expect that at least some of the Shortwave Radiogram transmissions via WRMI will not be on the air this week. I prepared a new program (374) for this week, but will probably repeat it next week because of the missed WRMI broadcasts.

If you were affected by storm Milton, and storm Helene before it, I hope things get back to normal as quickly as possible, Milton passed directly over my sister and nephew near Lakeland, Florida. I have not heard from them, but I assume they are without electricity, internet and cell for the time being.

Shortwave Radiogram Program 372

 

Hello friends,

For listeners in the areas affected by Hurricane Helene and associated storms and rainfalls, I hope damage and inconvenience are minimal. Here in northern Virginia, we are forecast to get some rain from the edges of the Helene system, and that will help alleviate our drought.

Producing this week's program was something of a challenge. I record the parts of the broadcast using Fldigi, then compile the parts using the Audacity software. This morning, Audacity froze for some reason. I had to exit the program. Audacity usually saves audio from unexpected exits. It did this time, except for the Three Mile Island story, which I had to re-record. Then I had to reassemble the show from the unnamed Audacity backup files. I might be getting too old for this. (My Windows 10 PC -- not eligible for Windows 11 -- might also be getting too old for this.)

Hello friends,

We are seeing signs of the changing seasons. Changes in the amount of daylight versus darkness affect our weather, and they affect the condition of the ionosphere, which affects shortwave reception and optimum frequencies. Because most Shortwave Radiogram frequencies do not change, you may notice better, or worse, reception as we move later in the year.

Speaking of weather, a tropical system brought some rain to northern Virginia, but not enough to break our drought.

And speaking of season, it's election season. That means candidates' signs on every median of every street that has a median here in Arlington.

Hello friends,

The anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, earlier this week, generated memories of that event, including the role of the mass media. While I am still able to remember 23 years ago, I decided to post a series of tweets to my X/Twitter account @kaedotcom. I was a VOA broadcaster then and played a small part in providing coverage. Those tweets are consolidated into the MFSK32 text item in this week's broadcast.

A listener alerted me to an anomaly at the swradiogram.net website. The Shortwave Radiogram transmission schedule, which displays correctly in the emails, is "clipped" on the left and right edges. If you click on that schedule, it displays completely from left to right. That will have to be the solution until I figure out a way to insert, quickly, tables in both the email (Mailchimp) and the website (Tumblr)

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 369

Hello friends

Each week, I spend a few hours perusing news articles about science and technology. The result of the search is the two articles we transmit on Shortwave Radiogram: one shorter in MFSK32 (120 wpm) and one longer in MFSK64 (240 wpm).

Of course, AI (artificial intelligence) is the subject of a large and increasing percentage of the articles I find. I am resisting these, hoping that I will get through life without knowing much about AI. I am still trying to learn about genuine human intelligence, flawed as it may be. 

Occasionally I will run across an article that is not about AI, but seems to have been written by AI. Such writings are, so far, easy to spot, because they lack nuance and any sort of literary soul. When they are not easy to spot, then I'll really worry.

Hello friends

Thanks to Jinling for voicing the introduction to last week's program 367. My voice is back now, so you will hear me again this week.

This week in northern Virginia, we endured temperatures as high as 99F/37C. Local meteorologists suggested that this might be our last heat wave of the season. I doubt that, as September around here is usually just another month of summer.

At least now, as I type this, we are getting some welcome rain. It's light rain, but the storm is slow moving, so it will accumulate. It's accompanying by the lovely sound of rolling thunder, almost all of it from a safe distance.

Thanks to @WD4AH_Al for watching the @SWRadiogram Twitter last weekend, while we were in New Jersey attending post-wedding receptions for our son and daughter-in-law.

Al informed me that the Saturday 0230 UTC transmission on WINB was the previous week's program. I've informed WINB. These things happen occasionally in the shoestring business of private shortwave broadcasting.

Because of sinus problems, I am not able to do the voice introduction of this week's show. My wife Jinling fills in. She and I are both PhD ex-professors who ended up in the US government (she via the private sector). We will mark our 30th anniversary in about two months. Our son is also a PhD, but he evaded academia, going directly to the aerospace industry.

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 366

 

Hello friends,

This was a week of bad news about shortwave broadcasting. The US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has closed its relay stations at Saipan and Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands (used mainly for Radio Free Asia) and at São Tomé (used for VOA broadcasts to Africa).

USAGM has not yet announced these closures on its website, but the news was reported by the Saipan Tribune. The newspaper quoted William S. Martin, USAGM's director of operations and stations division, who notes shortwave use has fallen dramatically almost everywhere since the invention of the internet.

The Saipan station dates back to KYOI, a commercial rock music station directed to Japan, 1982-1989. The Herald Broadcasting division of the Christian Science Monitor Syndicate operated the station 1989-1998. Radio Free Asia purchased the facility in 1998, and it became part of the USAGM shortwave transmitting network.

Part of the Shortwave Radiogram concept is that more and more countries are finding more and more ways to block internet content. Text via shortwave can be a workaround that completely sidesteps the internet. But this becomes less possible when fewer transmitting facilities are available.

Hello friends,

Not many of us are awake for the "red-eye" edition of Shortwave Radiogram Mondays at 0800-0830 UTC (4:00 am EDT) on 5850 kHz. I was awake this past Monday  (29 July), when I heard the WRMI station ID at 0800 UTC. Then silence. After about a minute WRMI's filler music (an interesting, eclectic mix) started. WRMI responded to my email, but I don't think they ever found out what happened. All the other transmissions of program 363 on WRMI (and WINB) were broadcast as scheduled.

Here in northern Virginia, it's still hot. We're on track to experience the most days per summer above 90F/32C. And there is the humidity and the drought. At least I'm retired now and no longer must cope with cars on the Washington Metro (subway) with broken air conditioning. That made for an interesting evening commute.

Hello friends,

Thank you for putting up with our repeat broadcast during the past two weeks. The repeat allowed my wife and me to attend the wedding of our son in Seattle. Both bride and groom are aerospace engineers.

Thanks to Al WD4AH for looking after the @SWRadiogram Twitter and other matters during my absence.

We returned to northern Virginia to temperatures not as bad as the 100F/38C we endured before we left for Seattle. But the rain forecast every day during the past four days amounted to no more than a few paltry showers. Our drought continues. Our weather remains extremely uninteresting.
