Al-Qaida Will Return to Afghanistan, British Official Says

By Jamie Dettmer
August 13, 2021 08:09 AM
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace warned Friday that Afghanistan risks becoming a failed state and predicted a-Qaida will again thrive in the country.

“I’m absolutely worried that failed states are breeding grounds for those types of people,” he told British broadcaster Sky News.

Hours earlier Wallace announced Britain will dispatch hundreds of combat-ready paratroopers to Kabul to help evacuate more than 4,000 Britons and as many as 2,000 Afghans, who are likely to be killed by the Taliban for working with the British military. Algeria medium wave news and updates

Algeria
Amine Ferhane reported on mediumwave.info "There are changes to the programs and frequencies in Algeria: Jil FM on 531 kHz changed to Radio Algeria International, and Chaine 1 on 891 kHz has also changed to Radio Algeria International".

Tony Rogers writes: Following the switch of 531 and 891 kHz to Radio Algeria International in February, English has been heard at 1330-1400 and Spanish at 1400-1430. On 20 February, English was heard again in 1917 with a repeat of the featured program that had been heard earlier at 1345, followed by
Spanish.

At most other times programming is in Arabic or French.
(TR using online SDR in Alicante, Spain)

The online Grille des Programmes for Radio Algiers International lists English at 1100-1103,
1315-1345 and 1930-1940 UTC, although timings are variable.

Algeria to adjust work week to Sunday-Thursday

Algeria’s government has decided to break with the 33-year-old practice of observing the weekend on Thursdays and Fridays. The cabinet has ruled that starting from next month the official weekend will be moved to Friday and Saturday, in line with the practice in many Middle Eastern states.
Investors complain that having the weekend on Thursdays and Fridays, with Saturdays and Sundays as working days, meant they only had three days a week to conduct business with partners outside Algeria. The practice had been costing Algeria between $500 and $700 million in lost business each year, according to estimates from business lobby groups.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen also mark the weekend on Thursday and Friday. Kuwait switched to a Friday-Saturday weekend two years ago as part of efforts to promote its non-oil economy.
“It’s a very good move,” said one Algerian businessman who works with foreign companies. “If they moved it to Saturday and Sunday it would be even better,” said the businessman, who did not want to be named.
