Brazilian mediumwave news and loggings

Mediumwave News
Due to the migration process of Brazilian medium-wave stations to FM (76.1/107.9 MHz), which began in Brazil several years ago, on September 8th (yesterday) at noon, the 1260 kHz Radio Boa Vontade, São Paulo, was definitively deactivated.

The following Evening (las night), when I was researching which stations would now be heard on the 1260 kHz frequency in the São Paulo metropolitan area (I'm 17 km from the city of São Paulo), I was surprised by the results: Radio Cultura, São Borja (Rio Grande do Sul), Radio Gazeta, Maceió (Alagoas), and Radio Nacional, General Urquiza (Misiones region, Argentina). See the details of these receptions below.

Furthermore, a fourth station appeared for less than a minute, without identification conditions, which will now be monitored. My medium wave loop antennas will definitely handle this in the next few days.
Several stations remain on medium-wave here, even though they already operate on FM, and others are already announcing their departure from medium-wave soon (Radio Record, Super Radio, etc.).
There will be new opportunities to research what South American stations there are on these frequencies that will be vacant.

Radio Brasil Central readies for shift to FM

Radio Brasil Central is being prepared to switch from AM to FM. There are no clear mentions about the frequencies in question, but the medium wave frequency (1270 kHz) will certainly be there.

As for the other frequencies, tropical/short waves, 4985 kHz has not been on the air for many weeks. The frequency 11815 kHz is currently (April 9, 2130 UTC) without signal, off the air. In short, this is practical proof that what is being reported about the migration makes sense.

Information about the preparation of the migration of Radio Brasil Central to FM. See the following contents (please use Google Translate):

It is not yet known whether this is an experimental transmission, or whether it can already be considered an effective implementation.

Brazil's Rádio Nacional to begin Spanish/English slot

Rádio Nacional premieres international track in Spanish and English

Starting March 31, Rádio Nacional da Amazônia will debut an international program on its schedule, aimed at audiences from other countries who follow the program via shortwave. The 10-minute programs in Spanish and English will air daily at 10:50 pm

The creation of the Brazil National - International Service band came from QSL requests received by the broadcaster. QSL cards are postcards used by radio amateurs to confirm contacts made via radio. They function as a kind of communication "receipt" and are exchanged between radio operators in different parts of the world.

Because it operates on shortwave (SW), Rádio Nacional da Amazônia is the only radio station in the country that can have national and even international coverage. It potentially reaches 60 million inhabitants, with a signal that reaches the entire northern region, as well as Maranhão, Piauí, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Goiás and other states. The radio station strengthens the link between the communities of the Amazon, integrates the region with other states in Brazil, and values cultural diversity. diversity.

Super Rede Boa Vontade de Rádios leaves shortwave

Célio Romais, from Brazil, informs me via email of the following:

Brazil
"On January 29, 2024, Uender Marques noticed, in Unaí, Minas, that the three shortwave frequencies of the Super Rede Boa Vontade de Rádios, in Porto Alegre, RGS, were out.

He immediately got in touch, via WhatsApp, with the station's Technician, Geison Guedes. The technician informed us that the station is in the process of migrating to FM. Therefore, he asked the Government to remove the frequencies of 6,160, 9,550, and 11,895 kHz from the air

Brazil's post office launches stamps on Radio's First 100 Years

Merco Press

South Atlantic News Agency

September 9 2022

Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) and the Post Office launched a stamp on Sept. 7 in Rio de Janeiro marking the 100th anniversary of the first radio broadcast in the country, exactly one century after the Declaration of Independence.

The ceremony took place during the intermission of the event held by Rádio MEC at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro featuring the theater's orchestra conducted by maestro Felipe Prazeres and the UFF National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the Argentinean Javier Logioia.

Radio broadcasting in Brazil is still on the rise, combining information, culture, and entertainment. Form and content are reinvented in these moments of transition.

In 1922, a major exhibition was held in Rio de Janeiro, then the country's capital, from September 7 of that year through July 24, 1923, to demonstrate the country's potential. The event promoted inventions, such as the one that required the setting up of transmission stations such as the ones on Corcovado Hill, previously only telegraphic, and Praia Vermelha.

The new structures were deployed to demonstrate the use of sound and voice over long distances, with repeater antennas in the mountainous regions of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The idea was to show a technological advance capable of making transmissions through the air without the use of wires.

One of the outstanding transmissions on that September 7, 1922, took place from the area of the pavilions from which President Epitácio Pessoa addressed the nation. Another highlight was the introduction of Carlos  Gomes' opera “O Guarani”, which was broadcasted from the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro that same day.
The noisy transmissions needed improvement, but the novelty caught the attention of those who visited the fair or traveled through the surrounding areas and heard the sound communication. Those experiments officially marked the beginning of radio in the country with wireless, long-distance transmission.

One of the main pioneers of radio broadcasting in Brazil was Edgard Roquette Pinto (1884-1954), who convinced the Brazilian Academy of Sciences to sponsor the creation of Radio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro, now MEC Radio, which began operating the following year. His defense of educational radio encouraged Roquette Pinto to donate the station to the Ministry of Education in 1936. Even so, he continued to run the station until 1943. He also created, in 1934, the Radio School of Rio de Janeiro, which today carries his name: Radio Roquette-Pinto.

Rádio MEC was given an FM channel in 1983 and is known as Brazil's Classical Music Radio, with concerts and jazz programs. The two stations have been part of EBC since 2008 and offer content that focuses on culture, education, and children.

The 1930s marked the Golden Age of Radio. Technical investment expanded the scope from shortwave to medium wave and then to AM. In this context, Rádio Nacional do Rio de Janeiro went on the air on September 12, 1936, from the building of the newspaper A Noite.

Nacional was taken over by the federal government in the 1940s. The station invested in technology to increase its reach and in the production of new products. The station became hegemonic with a series of diverse attractions including soap operas, while the news show Repórter Esso made a name for itself.
Competition from television undermined the station's dominance from the 1950s on. Even so, Rádio Nacional remains with quality productions on the air and, since 2008, is part of the EBC. The main programming content involves journalism, sports, and cultural attractions.

Brazil's Radio MEC extinguished by Bolsonaro government

Brazil: Radio MEC AM, founded in 1923, is being closed by the Bolsonora government in Brazil. It transmits on medium wave 800 kHz in Rio de Janiero (100 kW re WRTH 2019) and Brasilia (10 kW re WRTH 2019) as well as on FM. This report (translated from Portuguese) is from newspaper Brasil de Fato July 5t edition, and notes the signal will be turned off on 31 July, 2019
(BDXC)

MEC AM radio, founded in 1923, four years after the emergence of Pernambuco Radio Club, the first in the country, was extinguished by the Broadcasting Brazil of Communication (EBC), as part of the changes required by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PSL).

The signal will be turned off on July 31st, according to Lauro Jardim, d'O Globo's column. The closure, however, has not yet been officially confirmed nor communicated to the station's employees, founded by anthropologist Edgard Roquette-Pinto under the name Radio Society, was donated in 1936 to the federal government. Internal sources heard off by  Brazil's Fato report  confirm the closure information.

The acronym MEC stands for “Music, Education and Culture” and works in Rio de Janeiro. On its website, the station claims to have “about 50,000 records and productions” and “a heritage of recordings from testimonials ranging from Getúlio Vargas to Monteiro Lobato, through chronicles by Cecília Meireles and Manuel Bandeira”.

“The programming is totally focused on the diffusion of Brazilian culture. It contemplates all the diversity of Brazilian music, from genres such as choro, regional music, instrumental and concert music. It also has programs dedicated to literature, cinema, drama and the arts as a whole ”, states the description of public radio.

(DXplorer June 29/BC-DX #920 via wb, Germany)

4885 Radio Maria. At the time of observation, catholic preaching, musical break and phone-ins w/ listeners' prayers to Our Lady [yes, maybe a phone nr.]. (...): not Radio Difa Acreana nor Radio Club do Para, but tests from a new station owned by the Our Lady of Aparecida Foundation; tx site at Anapolis GO, day time power 1 kW/night time power [says 212 kW which is a mistake, so most probably 212 watt or then 0.12 kW if there was some typing mistake],
ANATEL registered call sign ZYF 692, name "Radio Voz do Coracao da Imaculada."

Other data:
GC: 16 15 25 00 S 49 01 08 00 W, Base tower: 91.4 m ASL One main tx, 2 standby units. Manufacturer "Indelmond" - Industria e Comercio de Aparelhos Electronicos, Lda. Tx model [doesn't say which]:
TBI-OT-1.

Radio Voz do Coracao Imaculado, ex-Radio Carajas, was inactive and was sold four years ago to the Our Lady of Aparecida Foundation which is reactivating this channel under the new name "Radio Maria", so new ownership, new station albeit using the rig and site of the original station.

Brazil ready to evaluate the DRM standard while deciding its digital radio future

This major breakthrough for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) was announced during the 25th ABERT Broadcasting Congress in Brasilia, Brazil (19-21 May).

Seven experts representing the DRM Consortium (from BBC, Digidia, Dolby, Fraunhofer IIS, TDF, and Thomson Grass Valley) were invited to this congress and made well received presentations in the plenum. In addition, DRM in the AM bands with multimedia elements Slideshow and Journaline, DRM+ with 5.1 Surround Sound, and DRM/AM simulcasting were demonstrated during the 3 days of the congress, while live transmissions from Chile, Ecuador and French Guyana could be listened to on the latest generation of DRM receivers.

During the opening session of the congress on May 19th, the Brazilian Minister of Communications Helio Costa announced an upcoming public consultation period of 180 days. The aim of this consultation is to choose the most adequate digital radio system fulfilling all broadcast requirements of Brazil.

DRM has confirmed throughout the congress, attended by 1500 participants, its readiness and willingness to lead this evaluation, together with Brazilian partners and the general support of the Brazilian authorities. The preparation of these trials has already started during the congress.

The DRM Consortium will contribute to the selection of the best digital radio solution for Brazil. The open, global DRM Digital Radio Mondiale standard was recently officially chosen by India and Russia for their radio broadcasting bands.
