Blog Logs – Monitoring signals behind the Bamboo Curtain

For decades, the term Bamboo Curtain was the Cold War political demarcation between the Communist states of East Asia, particularly the People’s Republic of China.

Radio signals in China, continue to capture the attention of shortwave listeners from every corner of the globe. While other stations are reverting to internet or FM broadcasting, China continues to increase their presence on medium wave and shortwave.
To many hobbyists, China remains a fascination amid a vast continent of mystery, revolution and dynasties.

Firedrake's large footprint on the bands

Firedrake Jammer 6080 // 9355 // 9745, 2030-2050. Broadcast of usual very loud oriental orchestral music. Jammer frequencies are typically used against broadcasts in Chinese targeted to Asia. China's Soft Power in the Middle East

China’s Arabic-language television and radio outreach efforts don’t compare to America’s in traditional measures like audience size. But sometimes how many people are tuning in isn’t as important as who is tuning in.

Ratings matter to commercial radio and television because the size of the audience determines the price of sponsors’ airtime. But should they also matter to government-backed foreign broadcasts, which do not sell ads? In Washington, the Arabic-language television network Alhurra and its sister radio channel, Sawa, receive funding from the U.S. Congress to present America to the Arab world. They publish an annual performance review that quantifies success largely in terms of “audience weekly reach,” now estimated at 35.5 million. Their data comes from corporate research by the Gallup Organization and analysis from firms such as Nielsen, which tracks everything from Sunday Night Football viewership to how many Americans play video games.

These survey companies would presumably be unimpressed, for example, by government-backed offerings out of Beijing like the 45-minute documentary about the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, which aired late last year on the Arabic service of Chinese Radio International. Perhaps a mere 5,000 listeners tuned in online via the CRI Web site, alongside however many shortwave radio enthusiasts who picked up the aerial signal from its source in Albania. The program featured a synthesized keyboard soundtrack, a lean script, interviews with Chinese language teachers in two Arab countries, and musical interludes by a Beijing rapper (whose lyrics were untranslated).

Radio China International announces Radio Memories contest

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of China Radio International (CRI). The first radio waves came from Yan'an caves in 1941, CRI now broadcasts in 61 languages. CRI has experienced profound changes from short-wave to frequency modulation broadcasting, from radiocast to webcast, from overseas broadcasting to international communication.

China International Broadcasting Network to be launched

In his New Years message, The Director-General of China Radio International Wang Gengnian said: “This year, 17 new full frequency [sic] FM or AM radio stations were established abroad, a multimedia entity consisting of radio, television, and internet is taking its shape, and a brand new broadcasting building is in the works. Before long, China International Broadcasting Network (CIBN) will be set up. With the help of new media, CRI is ready to offer more timely and accessible information. All our efforts have paid off. We have received a record of more than 3 million letters and e-mails from listeners and netizens around the world.

Togo and China sign broadcasting agreement

Togolese authorities and officials of China Radio International and CCTV [China Central Television] over the weekend reached an agreement according to which these two Chinese state media will broadcast some of their programs on the airwaves of Radio Lome and TVT [Togolese Television]. They are yet to give the terms.

“This agreement illustrates the commitment of the Head of State to make Togo a country open to partners for the advancement of our people,” said Communications Minister Djimon Ore.

Zhou Weihua, the head of the Chinese delegation, explained that the partnership “will contribute to mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries and help to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation between Togo and China”.

Besides broadcasting its content, the agreement also provides technical and material assistance for the modernization of the studios and administration of state-owned radio and TV stations.

China Radio International broadcasts its programmes in French on shortwave and on the Internet focused on Chinese and international news.

Created three years ago, CCTV-F is the French channel of China Central Television. The station’s programs are devoted to news in China, the economy, Chinese culture and international relations. Based in Beijing, it is, like RCI [Radio Canada International], a tool for selling the country abroad.

Using several satellites, CCTV-F is received directly or via cable and ADSL [Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line] packages around the world.

In addition to the French channel, CCTV broadcasts in English, Spanish, Arabic, and of course in Chinese, with about ten channels devoted to the economy, sports, culture and opera.

New shortwave station launches in Nanning, China

Tony Harding, a Hong Kong-based journalist covering the 6th China-ASEAN Expo, has just sent us this report:

Guangxi People’s Radio and China Radio International today launched a new radio service - Beibu Bay Radio - “Voice of Guangxi Beibu Gulf”. The station broadcasts on a network of 15 FM frequencies and 2 shortwave transmitters across Southern China from studios in Nanning, Guangxi province. The station will be on the air from 0700-2400 daily (2300-1600 UTC), in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai and English.

There are DX opportunities to hear the station on 5050 kHz and 9820 kHz, and on the Web at http://www.bbrmedia.com/ . The main English language program, called The Hot Pot Show (This a Chinese form of eating, not a reference to the Golden Triangle in South East Asia), is from 1600-1800 local time (0800-1000 UTC).

At the opening ceremony, attended by the consuls of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, the wish was expressed that the station will be able to give China’s angle on events and trade in the area.

The launch of the station coincides with the 6th China-ASEAN Expo being held in the city and is also in preparation for the 1 January 2010 removal of trade tariffs between the 11 countries to form the biggest free trade area in the world. China is attempting to bolster cooperation as well as projecting a more favourable image abroad.

CRI Online launches six language services

CRI Onl,ine the multi-language website of China Radio International (CRI), formally launched six more foreign language services today, bringing the total number of language services operated on CRI Online to 59. The six new website editions include Belarusian (www.belarusian.cri.cn), Dutch (www.nl.radio86.com), Greek (www.greek.cri.cn), Hebrew(www.hebrew.cri.cn), Icelandic (www.is.radio86.com) and Norwegian (www.no.radio86.com), CRI president Wang Gengnian told press in Beijing.

The six newly-launched news services are the first of their kind in their own native languages in China, Mr Wang said, adding that they provide information about business, culture and tourism in China, and offer Chinese music and free online Chinese classes, via their multimedia platforms in the form of texts, photos, and audio and video webcasts.

“This is also CRI Online’s latest move in further consolidating its cutting edge in multi-language services and enhancing its capacity in international broadcasts and communication, following its earlier online services launched in Ukrainian and Croatian in 2008,” he said.

CRI Online, officially launched in 1998, offers 59 language services and 18 webcast stations.

China Radio International now available on your cell phone

China Radio International (CRI) English service is now available on mobile telephone sets all over the world. The mobile phone users only need to type http://m.cri.cn/ to gain access to English news, business, showbiz, travel services, a Chinese language learning studio, as well as video and audio English programs produced by China Radio International. The advent of CRImobile was a response to the increasing popularity of surfing the internet via mobile phones.

During Beijing Olympics in August 2008, CRImobile, a mobile version of CRIENGLISH.com was put into trial operation, providing Olympic news, exclusive reports, as well as practical travel information on Beijing. This included tips and advises about transportation, scenic sports, cultural information and accommodation.

CRImobile plans to build a mobile infotainment platform for the real-time sharing of information-based multimedia content that includes entertainment, travel and human interest stories.
