"Call Me Nana"

During the summer months we take a break from RadioBooks to present our annual Global Perspective series. Eight national and international broadcasters give their local perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Escape.

According to statistics of the Canadian census released in 2007, there are more than 65,000 grandparents in Canada raising grandchildren on their own. They're called skipped generation families. And their number is growing by about a thousand every year. For these grandparents there is no escape from the unexpected parental responsibility for their grandchildren. This week: the precarious future of Myanmar. Cyclone Nargis has devastated the Irrawaddy Delta, once known as the country's rice basket. There's an urgency at getting farmers back to work on the land before time runs out - the window for the next planting season will be open only for another couple of weeks, if that deadline is missed all of Myanmar will feel the effects of the disaster.

Dutch-Iraqi filmmaker Mohammed Al-Daradji returned to his hometown of Baghdad in 2003 in the wake of the American invasion. What shocked him most was seeing several mental patients wandering in the streets of the city, confused and half naked. One young doctor was trying to look after them. Al-Daradji decided to make a film about them called Ahlaan or 'Dreams'. We talk to him about being kidnapped, tortured and imprisoned while making this award-winning movie.
We also look at the right to a home. For some it's a geographical place, for others it's ideological, and sometimes you get caught halfway between the two. That was the case for American pop singer-turned socialist superstar, Dean Reed. As support for the East German regime waned, so did Dean Reed's fan base. He died outside Berlin in 1986, never quite finding his true home.

Meanwhile Philippino Wilma Consul finds her true home in the people and food of Hawaii.

And in Istanbul, the wrecking ball threatens the thousand-year-old neighbourhood of the Roma.

Bart Moeyart - 'Kellerkatze'

The 43-year-old Flemish writer Bart Moeyart's contribution to Radio Books is called 'Kellerkatze' - German for cellar cats. The story is narrated by Harriet whose mother is the housekeeper of a chateau owned by a rich, noble family.

Harriet is visiting and staying in the basement of the chateau where her grandmother also lives. But things are not right. There's frenzied activity and the count presents to her mother an all-important cigar box. What's in the cigar box? And why is the house in upheaval?
