Bolivia's Radio Fides log
6155.25, Radio Fides, 1030-1045. From tune in, noted steady news presented by various males in Spanish Language. At 1032, a series of ads or promos presented. One thing I like about Bolivian Radio Stations, especially those on shortwave, is the fact that they all are a few hertz off frequency.As far as I can tell, that's the case with each station. I suppose this maybe an intentional condition that they possibly feel allows their station to be heard by their listeners or possibly their transmitter is not precise enough to tune down to the nearest Hertz easily? Regardless, it makes tuning in Bolivian stations a lot easier especially if one has a good notch filter on his receiver. Getting back to Radio Fides, the talk continued during the period while the signal faded from a fair to poor. (Chuck Bolland, FL December 2, 2008)

Language: local On 3rd 7315 had a delay of ca 0.7 ec. On 3r with signals S7 (33323) for 13800 // S5 (35334 ) for 7315 but now 13800 had the delay. Woman announcer 1229-1230. Strong but not overwhelming CODAR QRM, but otherwise low noise llevels. SINPO 23442. Signal improved slightly from 1125 to 1230 end of recording.(B Churchill, CA)

9665.56 KCBS Pyongyang, 2327, 12/02/08. More revolutionary opera, which aside from the source is actually fairly pleasant to listen to, seemed to flow from piece to piece without any announcer commentary. Best in USB due to a big het from something right on 9665, but unsure what - several possibilities listed. First time heard here at this hour. Poor. (M. Schiefelbein, MO)

4826.46, Radio Sichuan, 1021-1040. Mainly heard Spanish comments from both a male and female during the period. Some music heard, but only as a "bridge" so to speak. Signal was fair to threshold during the period. By 1040, it was evident that the signal was fading out for the morning. (C. Bolland, FL)

4835.45. Radio Maranon, 1115-1120. Surprised that this is still readable because of the late time, but noted a female in Spanish language followed by a male. This signal is cycling in and out as it fades into the noise trying to hold on for just a few more moments. Unfortunately that doesn't happen as it fades down to nothing. (C. huck Bolland, FL)

Local reggae-flavoured song after that. Quite strong here, 29/11.(C Seager, Australia)

USA
Radio Marti, 6300, 2202-2205, November 24. Excellent signal with women reading news in Spanish, ending her segment with". . . Radio Marti." Included a few words in English mentioning Wall Street from a speech by a man. Off suddenly at 2205—before I had a chance to check parallel frequencies, 6030 was on when I checked a few seconds later, but signal was only good, and jamming was present. Punch-up error for 6030? At 2357 recheck, a weak Radio Nacional de la RASD was on 6300. (W. Craighead)

9745USB Radio Bahrain at 1852 UT. Middle Eastern vocal, brief announcement in Arabic by woman, then enthusiastic man and woman swapping mic in what sounded like ads. Into another vocal at 1855 UT with local instruments featuring heavy drums. Seemed pips at 1900 UT followed by talk, but too fady and noisy to read. Ecuador
HCJB now uses 15280 kHz to Europe in the DRM Mode with 4 kW and a Rhombic Antenna. Time 1100-1300 UTC. Bitrate is only 14.78 kBit, but audio is very good for that low bitrate. For proper decoding a SNR of 10- 12 dB is needed.

Program lineup includes
Musica del Ecuador at 1100-1130. News programming in Spanish 1130-1200. Low German 1200-1230. German 1230-1300 UT.

Poland/Germany
Polskie Radio, English service. Thursday Multimedia entry missed on website, but is really on air, checked Nov 27.

Sweden
GRIMETON RADIO / SAQ TRANSMISSION.
There will be a transmission with the Alexanderson alternator on 17.2 kHz on Dec 6, 2008 at 1045 UTC. The reason for the extra transmission is the opening of a new "Alexanderson Institute" at Campus Learning Centre in Varberg, the near by city.

We do not require any QSL-reports this time and will not verify.

Adventist World Radio - AWR Wavescan - DX Program

* USA: Currently, there is a concerted effort on the part of radio afficianados to rescue the high powered “Voice of America” international shortwave station located near Delano in California. If their efforts are successful, this station will not be demolished, but instead it will be preserved for possible use in the future, as coming political and international events may suggest. This VOA station near the American Pacific coast was constructed towards the end of World War 2, and over the years it has been modernized and updated as newer equipment has become available. The coverage area for VOA Delano has been the many countries on the Pacific rim and also Latin America. You can read about the rescue efforts that have already been implemented by checking their website at radionational.org and also by entering VOA Delano into Youtube.

* Canada: The 1 kW shortwave station located near Toronto in Ontario has recently been renovated and re-activated. With a new transmitter and a new antenna system, this station CFRX can be heard again on its familiar channel 6070 kHz, with a relay from the parent mediumwave station, CFRB on 1010 kHz. However, monitoring observations at our location in Indianapolis, 550 miles southwest of Toronto, indicate that the new antenna system is apparently oriented more for Canadian coverage rather than omni-directional coverage as it was in years gone by. The signal in Indiana is quite poor and unreliable, though it can be heard occasionally with a readable signal.

* New Guinea: Adventist World Radio has contributed half of the funds required for establishing an FM station at the Pacific Adventist University in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Although the Seventh-day Adventist denomination has been on the air on multiple occasions from the radio stations throughout Papua New Guinea, this new 1 kW FM station is the first Adventist owned radio station in this country. The university campus is located at Boroko, on the edge of Port Moresby, and the target date for the initial test broadcasts from this new radio station has been some time during this month of November.

* India: Jose Jacob, VU2JOS in Hyderabad, reported on November 16 that AIR Port Blair was noted on 4765 kHz instead of the usual 4760 kHz, thus enabling listeners to tune in AIR Leh which was previously co-channel with Port Blair.

* Indonesia: The BBC Monitoring Service reports that there are sixty two radio stations on the air on the holiday island of Bali. Because of this congestion on the radio dial, the licensing authorities state that no channels are available for new radio stations on Bali.

* Namibia: BBC Monitoring also reports that NBC, The Namibia Broadcasting Commission is heavily in debt, to the amount of $250 million. The management of NBC in Windhoek is appealing to their government for financial aid in order to survive.

* Thailand: A report from Andy Sennitt via Jerry Berg states that the BBC relay station located in northern Thailand was taken off the air at the end of the first week in November due to local flooding. Some of the BBC programming was transferred to the Radio Netherlands relay station located on the island of Madagascar.

* Romania: According to Alokesh Gupta in India via Cumbre DX, Romania issued a new postage stamp and also a new coin on November 1 to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of radio broadcasting in their country.

*Australia: A report in the October issue of the Australian DX News states that HCJB Australia has received approval to construct a new shortwave station on an adjoining property at Kununurra at the top of Western Australia. It is intended that all of the transmission facilities located on the original property will ultimately be transferred to the adjacent new location.

* Australia: The same issue of ADXN also states that the transmitter facilities of Radio Netherlands at Flevo in Holland are in the process of being dismantled, though it is not known yet as to what will happen to all of this equipment and the transmitter building.

* USA: And now an interesting old item of news as our final item in this edition of American DX Report; and we take you to Chicago Illinois, on the edge of the Great Lakes. Back three quarters of a century ago, the mediumwave station WLS in Chicago reported that they received a total of 1,051,041 letters from listeners in the year 1934.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
24 - 30 November 2008

Solar activity was very low through the period. No flares were observed. The visible disk was spotless.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels on 24 November. On 25 and 26 November, activity increased to quiet to active levels, with isolated minor storm periods at high latitudes observed on the 25th. This period of activity was due to a recurrent coronal hole that rotated into a geoeffective position. By early on 27 November, activity decayed to quiet levels and remained so through the balance of the summary period. The period began with ACE solar wind
velocities at about 270 km/s. These velocities persisted through late on 24 November when wind speed jumped abruptly to about 600 km/s by midday on the 25th. During this timeframe, the Bz component of the IMF varied from a high of +18 nT (25/0543Z) to a low of -15
nT (25/0406Z) with a Bt max of 24 nT (25/0342Z), all associated with the onset of the coronal high speed stream. Wind speeds reached a maximum of 658 km/s by late on 26 November and gradually decayed to, and ended the period at about 360 km/s.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 03 December and 06 - 12
December.

Kyrgyz national broadcaster suspends Radio Liberty programs

Bishkek, 2 December: The Kyrgyz National Television and Radio Broadcasting corporation [NTRC; main state-owned television and radio broadcaster] has stopped allocating radio waves to Radio Azattyk [Radio Liberty Kyrgyz Service] and Azattyk television programmes have ceased to exist on the channel [of the national television].
The state television and radio broadcaster stopped allocating the waves to the radio immediately after local elections [in October 2008].
Earlier, the NTRC director-general, Melis Eshimkanov, said that the denial of rebroadcasting was connected with non-performance of contractual financial commitments by Azattyk. On its part, the radio said at that time that it had paid off the debt to the NTRC in full.
Radio Azattyk programmes are currently being rebroadcast to Bishkek and [northern] Chuy Region by Radio Almaz and to [southern] Batken [Region] by Radio Salam [privately owned radio broadcasters]. Local radio stations in Karakol [town in northern Issyk-Kul Region] are deciding the question of rebroadcasting Radio Azattyk [to the region]. In the meantime, [southern] Osh and Dzhalal-Abad regions have no opportunities to rebroadcast Radio Azattyk programmes at the moment.
Radio Azattyk has refrained from making any comments on this to the AKIpress news agency.
Top officials of the international network of Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe from Prague are expected to arrive this week to settle this issue.

ZNBC seeks funds to upgrade transmitters

The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) is scouting for funds to purchase high capacity transmitters to replace the smaller ones in order to improve transmission of the station’s signal in the country. The high capacity transmitters will be installed in all the 72 districts in the country. ZNBC Public Relations Manager Miriam Tonga said the upgrading of transmitters from 100 W to 5 kW would improve the quality of radio signal in rural areas.
Ms Tonga, who could not disclose how much funds are required, stated that the national broadcaster was committed to improving the quality of both radio and television transmission in the country.

She was responding to concerns raised by Kalomo Central Member of Parliament, Request Muntanga, who bemoaned the poor radio reception in his area. Mr Muntanga said people in Kalomo district were unable to listen to news and update themselves with current affairs programmes because of the poor radio reception being experienced in the area.
According to Mr Muntanga, there is poor reception in the morning from about 1100 hours to 1830 hours in the evenings. He attributed the poor reception to a small ZNBC transmitter at Senkobo which only covers 10 km.
Meanwhile, ZNBC is it preparing to move to digital before the year 2015. Ms Tonga said broadcasting institutions the world over were on alert for the migration to digital systems before the June 17, 2015 deadline set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). She disclosed that the ZNBC would soon embark on a countrywide drive to educate the Zambian people on the effects of migrating to the digital system.

HCJB Global Transmitter Installed at TWR's Site in Swaziland

A new 100,000-watt shortwave transmitter built at the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Ind., is on the air at the Trans World Radio (TWR) site in Swaziland, broadcasting a message of hope across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.

Through a cooperative effort between the two organizations, the HC100 transmitter began broadcasting about 12 hours a day on Oct. 23, replacing an outdated Continental unit and joining two other HC100s, also from Elkhart. "The results of the broadcasts from this transmitter are that people come to Christ and they are encouraged in their faith," said Ray Alary, TWR's director of operations in Africa. "For those with HIV/AIDS, we can encourage them in what seems a hopeless situation. Through Jesus we all have hope. The primary target areas are eastern and southern Africa, but our transmitters in Swaziland reach locations as far away as Pakistan. We broadcast in approximately 30 languages with our three HC100 transmitters."

Alary added that TWR's partnership with HCJB Global "goes back a long way and has taken many different forms over the years . . . it is a model of a well-functioning partnership where each party gains from our ability to work together." The artnership includes having a number of TWR missionaries serving at the Technology Center in Elkhart. Among those is veteran engineer Larry McGuire who lived in Swaziland for 16 years before moving to Elkhart in 1990. He helped build and install all three HC100s at the Swaziland site, spending 2½ weeks in Swaziland in October to put the new transmitter on the air. "The new transmitter is much more efficient and has a clearer, more understandable signal than the one it replaced," McGuire said. "The HC100 is also easier to maintain because it was designed by missionary engineers for that purpose."

Alary said that having "three identical transmitters at the same site makes our operation in Swaziland very efficient. In addition, we have purchased more than 20 suitcase transmitters through HCJB." Tom Lowell, chairman of TWR's board of irectors, said the new transmitter has many economic advantages. "For example, parts needed to keep the old equipment on the air were expensive. The Continental transmitter uses three large tubes, at $13,000 each, compared to the HC100's single tube. That's an immediate savings of $26,000 on parts alone! The HC100 also operates much more efficiently, saving us $12,000 per year on our electric bill in Swaziland."

McGuire added that the installation of the HC100 in Swaziland culminates years of work and planning dating back to about 2000. Construction of this transmitter, the ninth of its type, was completed in 2005. After TWR agreed to purchase the unit, it was modified to, and tested for, Swaziland requirements, then packed and loaded onto a truck in Elkhart on July 31. It then traveled across the Atlantic Ocean by ship, arriving in Durban, South Africa, on Sept. 9.

From there it went by train to Matsapha, Swaziland, where it cleared customs "almost immediately," he said. Finally it went by truck to TWR's transmitter site on a ranch 20 miles from Manzini along the White Mbuluzi River, arriving on Sept. 18.
"The day it arrived, there 'happened' to be a work crew from a church in Elkhart that had been renovating the building," McGuire continued. "They were way ahead of schedule, so they helped unload the transmitter from the container, got it in position and started putting up the heavy parts and then built the fascia-all before

I started working on the installation on Oct. 6. I was very amazed. That's never happened before!" When McGuire said the entire installation process went moothly. "The cooperation was great-very beneficial for both." David Russell, director of the HCJB Global Technology Center, calls it a "privilege to work closely with engineers of TWR Africa. During just the past year we have cooperated with TWR on projects in Benin, Kenya and Swaziland. We are presently refurbishing a used 50,000-watt AM transmitter that will be used at TWR's Swaziland broadcast facilities.
"It gives us a great sense of fulfillment to be able to support our fellow kingdom workers at TWR through the provision of technical consulting, equipment, installations and maintenance," Russell added. "By pooling our strengths we are able to be more effective in the Lord's harvest fields." (Press Release)

Sri Lanka destroys Tamil Tigers radio station

The leader of the Tamil Tigers has said Sri Lanka is “living in a dreamland of military victory”, moments after government jets for a second year running destroyed a rebel radio station broadcasting his annual address. Even with a Sri Lankan military offensive besieging the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) self-declared capital, leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran remained defiant in his yearly rallying cry.
“The Sinhala state has, as never before, placed its trust on its military strength,” he said, referring to Sri Lanka’s government. “It is living in a dreamland of military victory. It is a dream from which it will awake. That is certain.” Prabhakaran’s speech, usually recorded beforehand at one of his jungle hideouts, went out worldwide on the Internet despite the air raid.
Air force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said the strike completely destroyed a radio station close to Kilinochchi, the northern town the LTTE has declared as capital of the separate state it wants to create and calls Tamil Eelam.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
17 - 23 November 2008
Solar activity was very low through the period. No flares were observed. The visible disk was spotless.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated no significant disturbances during the period. Solar wind velocities ranged from 259 to 457 km/sec during the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
26 November - 22 December 2008

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 26 November - 03 December and 06 - 12 December.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at mostly unsettled levels during 26 - 27 November due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Quiet levels are expected during 28 November - 03 December followed by an increase to unsettled to
active levels during 04 - 06 December due to a recurrent CH HSS. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 07 - 21 December. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels on 22 December due to another recurrent CH HSS.

Test begin for BBC/DW DRM service to begin 2009

Media Network contributor Christopher Lewis reported this morning “0858 UTC. I am currently listening to BBC and Deutsche Welle Test (the text as appeared on the display) on 9610 kHz DRM. I am not sure where the transmission is being relayed from, but signal is steady, with stereo audio. Programming is featuring reports about the environment, agriculture, sciences etc. Test continues at 0900 on 9610 khz, opening with a bulletin of DW news in English.”
In fact, the transmission on 9610 was from Sines, Portugal. In the DRM Sofware Radio Forums, the complete schedule is given for the tests which will continue at 0500-2300 UTC today, tomorrow and Thursday. BBC World Service and Deutsche Welle have announced plans to launch a joint radio service to Europe on DRM shortwave. The new stream, which will be entirely in English, is expected to go live in early 2009. It will be available from early morning till late at night targeting Western and Central Europe and a potential audience of 170 million listeners with global news and current affairs and a rich mix of in-depth analysis, documentaries and cultural programs. The service will provide a multimedia offer of audio and text, the latter coming automatically from the BBC News website.
Erik Bettermann, Director General at Deutsche Welle, said: “It is great that two of the world’s most established broadcasters can work together on a project of this scale. This is an exciting venture that will offer European listeners top class content and provides the perfect opportunity to reintroduce listeners to DRM.”

Checking for Radio Rossii parallels, 0108-0118, Nov 24:5935 (poor under QRM), 7140 (poor), 7200 (very good), 7320 (fair),7345 (poor with QRM). Surprised to hear them doing so well this early. Too much QRM to hear 6075 at this time, but heard them at 0140.

6075, Radio Rossii Kamchatka (presumed ID) via Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka, checked again and found them well on top of the QRM, 0140-0200, Nov 24; surprised to find another time besides 0810-0900 that broadcasts their local programming (probably on from 0110-0200); many mentions of Kamchatka; gives phone numbers; at 0143: "This is Kamchatka"; Russian ballads and pop songs; 0200 strong DW sign-on; at 0200 clearly heard just the "Programa Radio Rossii" ID after the pips, was fair till 0200.

6085, Radio Rossii via Krasnoyarsk, at 0205, Nov 24, noted parallel to 5935 (poor-fair under QRM), 6075 (poor mixing with DW), 6140 (poor), 7200 (fair with QRM), 7320 (fair), 7345 (fair). Quick check at 0241 found them not in parallel with the other Radio Rossii stations (and of course not parallel to GTRK Magadan either), so assume this could be their local/regional programming, but needs more monitoring to know just what it is. Must be from 0210-0300.

7320, GTRK Magadan, 0224-0300, Nov 24; local/regional programming (assume from 0210-0300); BoH jingle and ID (could not make it out, but clearly no mention of "Rossii"); per helpful input from Mauno Ritola who listened to my audio clip, they gave telephone numbers and address to Magadan and Magadan oblast weather so clearly this was a local/regional program; folk song; fair-poor; parallel to 5935 (poor under QRM), after 0300 went back to "Programa Radio Rossii" IDs (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

Sri Lanka
6045, IBC Tamil (tentative), 0007-0043, Nov 24, was checking for Mexico and heard this. English commentary about UN and cease fire, 0015 into assume Tamil, some pop music, seemed to sign-off around 0100, poor with a het (Mexico QRM?), first time I have ever noted them here (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

6200, "Holy Tibet" program via Xizang PBS - Lhasa, 1630- 1700, Nov 24, all in English, " ... will learn more about Tibet: the people and the culture, on Holy Tibet", talking about the money the government puts into Tibet to help it develop, mostly plays indigenous Tibetan music and chanting/singing, woman describes in detail the various features of the Potala Palace (White Palace, etc.), "Don't miss visiting the Potala Palace", says something like: "Holy Tibet is the window to the world for Tibet" (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)
