All times UTC / * sign-on - sign-off* // parallel frequency
Logs edited for clarity

All India Radio
4760, AIR Port Blair, *2353-0035, Dec 18 and 19. Readable signal for about 30 minutes before gray line passage killed the signal. Interverl signl to 2354, usual stringed/flute Hindi music. Woman announcer to 0001, then into local music with periodic woman announcer to 0025. Signal seems to peak around 0015-0020, very usable signal. Some occasional utility, morse code interference and heavy interference from Tajikistan on 4765. (Churchill).
Also heard at 1630-1701*, Dec 30. I have monitored this frequency for a few days and no sign of AIR Leh. Most likely transmitter problems as I believe Leh was the one producing a lot of weird spurious signals ending at 1630. (Nilsson)

I was glad to get these e-mail messages for Christmas below.
(First e-mail)
”I have some good news about Radio Verdad for you. We are starting a new system by which we are going to transmit to the whole world with a strong signal. I have spent very much money on that, and I just paid some money yesterday for our strong transmissions to Japan with Radio Verdad 's signal. I hope everything comes out alright. If so, we may be transmitting with a strong signal by the month of February 2016.”
(Second e-mail)
”We are almost ready for the short wave transmissions, but our Government said to wait until January, but in January I am going to travel to Perú. So, I hope we may transmit in February. I hope everything comes out alright. We are going to transmit through Short Wave Alliance Euro-USA.
May God bless you.

ADXB QSL Action with Radio Tirana

Albania

Love hobby friends!

Now our QSL action is completed and therefore I would like to all those who took part, hereby using the A-DX List..

There were 122 reports received from a total of 105 participants from three continents (Europe, Asia, North America) and 15 countries.

The QSL cards were for the most part already directly from Tirana shipped. There 20 prizes were raffled off by the German Hoererklub Radio Tirana and these days sent.

Details can be found on the ADXB website as follows:
http://www.adxb-oe.org/adxb/ALBQSL-Abschluss.pdf

A beautiful action, in both the earpiece and the transmitter Radio Tirana, but also the Hoererklub of Radio Tirana (Werner Schubert) have benefited. Maybe we'll do at a later date again a new action with another station.

So far we had HRT Zagreb, Radio Budapest and Radio Slovakia Able to attract such an action International.

Monitoring Radio Panamericana

(Gayle Van Horn QSL COllection)
Bolivia
Radio Panamericana on 6105 kHz seems to have become a rarely heard station since July 2015. This coincides with the death of the founder Miguel Dueri Anton Maria on 30 July 2015 and the apparent relaunch of their website at: http://panamericana.bo

The coloured header of the site only mentions 96.1 MHz and 580 kHz while further down the short wave frequency is still included in a list which also mentions 106.3 MHz for the provinces. The site refers to a web stream at: http://www.megalink.com/radio/panamericana/index.php
which did not start when checked.

Looking at the given schedule one might also note that the station closes two hours earlier in the weekend compared with the weekday schedule.

If the transmitter is broken or failing, it is unlikely that short wave will be given any investment before January 2017, because the station's licence is coming up for renewal and the station does not necessarily comply with Presidente Evo Morales' views.

Shortwave News on DVD

Digital Reprint of all Editions ever published from 1957-2015

The "Danish Short Wave Club International" (DSWCI) was founded in November 1956 and is one of the most traditional and by far the most international club for radio enthusiasts worldwide. Since January 1957 the club publishes the regular magazine "Shortwave News" which for decades now is a unique source of information due to a most international network of correspondents and monitors worldwide.

From 1957 to 2000 "Shortwave News" was published a monthly basis, and after that every sixth week. In 1957 and 1958 the magazine was published in Danish and from 1957 to 1969 two different editions were distributed: "Shortwave News" in English and "Kortbolge Nyt" in Danish. Since January1970 the magazine is exclusively in English language.

The DSWCI decided its last Annual General Meeting in 2015 to close the club at the end of 2016. But it was agreed that everything ever published from the DSWCI should also be available for future generations of radio enthusiasts:

A unique blend of accurate news, reports and background information which was only possible with the great support of countless people during thepast almost six decades.

During the last years we got access to every edition of "Shortwave News" and"Kortbolge Nyt" ever published. The magazines were scanned, digitized and processed with an OCR software. The work is finished and therefore we now can offer a DVD with almost 60 years of radio-history and club-history
of the DSWCI.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 December - 03 January 2016

Solar activity ranged from very low to moderate levels. Very low activity was observed on 03 Jan, low level activity on 29 Dec - 01 Jan, and moderate level activity on 28 Dec and 02 Jan. Region 2473 (S22, L=331, class/area=Fkc/590 on 26 Dec), which exhibited a complex beta-gamma-delta configuration, produced all of the significant flare activity (2 M-class, 14 C-class).

On 28 Dec, Region 2473 produced an M1 flare at 28/1245 UTC. Associated with this event was a Type IV radio emission and a partial-halo CME observed off the southern portion of the disk, first visible in LASCO coronagraph imagery at 12/1212 UTC. Analysis of this CME determined that an Earth-directed component was present.

On 02 Jan, Region 2473 produced a long duration M2 flare at 02/0011 UTC. Associated with this event were Type II (1095 km/s) and IV radio emissions and an assymetric partial-halo CME observed off the southwest limb, first visible in LASCO coronagraph imagery at 01/2324 UTC. Analysis of this CME determined that a weak Earth-directed component was present and would arrive around midday on 03 Jan, though eventually proved to be a miss.

There was greater than 10 MeV proton event on 02 Januaury 2016. The event began at 02/0430 UTC shortly after a long duration M2 flare that accured at 02/0011 UTC. Proton flux reached a maximum flux value of 21 pfu (S1-Minor) at 02/0450 UTC and ended at 02/0750 UTC.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels throughout the period with the exception of 31 December when moderate flux levels were observed. A maximum flux of 6,782 pfu was observed at 03/1600 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to moderate (G2) storm conditions. At 31/0003 a small shock was observed at the ACE spacecraft. Total field (Bt) increased from 5 nT to 13 nT with a corresponding solar wind speed increase from 350 km/s to 500 km/s. The shock was associated with the arrival of the 28 Dec CME observed in LASCO C2 imagery at 28/1212 UTC. Isolated G1-Minor to G2-Moderate storm conditions were observed midday through late on 31 Dec as well as early on 01 Jan. Mostly quiet conditions were observed on 28 - 30 Dec, 02-03 Jan.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 January - 30 January 2016

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flare activity from 15 Jan - 28 Jan due to the return of Region 2473 (S22, L=331). Very low solar
activity is expected for the remainder of the period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be high from 04 - 13 Jan, 25 - 30 Jan due to recurrent coronal hole high speed streams (CH HSS).

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at active levels on 04, 07, and 22 Jan with G1-Minor storm conditions on 06 Jan due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Mostly quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the rest of the period.

International Broadcast from a Small Country Radio Station

The tenth Prime Minister in the national government of the Commonwealth of Australia was born in a small country town at almost the north western tip of the island of Tasmania.  He was Joseph A Lyons and he was born in the town of Stanley on September 15 in the year 1879.
The very small town of Stanley in Tasmania is nestled between the steep cliff of a high hill on one side and the water front on the other, and even to this day the total, population is less than 500.  A major tourist attraction is The Nut, a 500 feet high flat hill top that projects out into the ocean waterway; it is described by geologists as an old volcanic plug.
The young Joseph Lyons left school at the early age of 9 in order to work as a newspaper messenger boy in Ulverstone, another nearby country town, so that he could help support his parent’s large family of eight children.  Lyons subsequently re-entered the education scene, and he became a school teacher, though he subsequently entered state politics at the age of 30.
At age 35, Joseph Lyons married a 17 year old school teacher, Enid Burnell who herself subsequently became a highly successful politician at the national level.  Together, Joseph and Enid produced a brood of twelve children.
At age 44, Joseph Lyons became State Premier; at age 50, he became Postmaster General in the federal government; and at age 53, he was elected to Australia’s highest political office, as Prime Minister in the national government.  Lyons was loved by his fellow citizens, and he was portrayed in the newspapers as a cartoon character, a sleepy Koala Bear.
However, in all of his remarkable accomplishments, Joseph Lyons early recognized the value of the newly developing communication medium, radio.  The Australian Dictionary of Biography states that Lyons placed an emphasis on radio broadcasting in his political endeavors.
Joseph Lyons was a 16 year old country youth in Tasmania when 21 year old Guglielmo Marconi began his wireless experimentation in earnest in northern Italy in 1895.  He was 44 years old when the first radio broadcasting stations in Australia, 2FC and 2SB-2BL were inaugurated in late 1923.
As far as can be determined, the first radio broadcast made by Joseph Lyons was an election broadcast over an amateur radio station that was officially granted approval to act as a temporary radio broadcasting station in 1929.  This amateur station was licensed as VK7CS and it was owned and operated by Mr. A. C. Scott at 14 Law Street in Launceston in northern Tasmania.  On air, Mr. A. C. Scott usually identified himself as Darryl Scott.
As soon as amateur radio stations were permitted to activate their transmitters again after the end of World War 1, Scott became a very prominent operator and, as was expected in those days, he frequently went on the air with program broadcasting.  In 1927 for example, the program outline for his Saturday evening music broadcasts were listed in the local daily newspaper and they were heard  widely throughout Tasmania as well as over in several mainland cities, such as Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
During the evening of Saturday August 20, 1927, Scott arranged a hookup from a local hall in Launceston for a music and speech program that was radiated on 235 meters, 1275 kHz.  This special broadcast was acknowledged as the first occasion for an offsite transmission by an amateur radio operator in the radio history of Australia.
On the occasion of the federal elections in October 1929, Daryl Scott obtained official approval to broadcast election speeches over 7CS in advance of the voting, and also to release information over the air as the progressive voting figures became available on election day.  It was on the evening of Thursday October 3 that Joseph Lyons was given the microphone, and his campaign speech was broadcast over 7CS, an amateur station temporarily turned professional.
Back then, there were no regularly licensed mediumwave broadcasting stations on the air in northern Tasmania, and at that time 7CS was transmitting on 226 metres, 1325 kHz.  In fact, there was only one radio broadcasting station on the air in the entire state, and that was 7ZR in the capital city, Hobart, more than a hundred miles distant.
Less than three weeks later, Joseph Lyons was appointed Postmaster General in the federal cabinet, a position that gave him authority over the development of radio broadcasting throughout the entire nation.  Even though his term of office as Postmaster General ended eighteen months later, his involvement in the development of radio in Australia continued.
In December 1931, Lyons made a nationwide political speech from station 3LO in Melbourne; and during the following month in the New Year 1932, he was elected as the tenth Prime Minister in the Australian federal government.  Six months later, he inaugurated the newly organized ABC, the Australian Broadcasting Commission, which was made up of mediumwave stations located in each of the state capital cities.  It was Lyons who fostered this government organized broadcasting system, with two stations in each major location, one carrying national programming and the other producing local programming. Mr. K. S. Inglis states in the opening paragraph of his authoritative book, “This is the ABC”:  As  the bells in the tower of Sydney’s General Post Office chimed eight o’clock on the evening of Friday 1 July 1932, the peals were picked up by a microphone and carried to every state in the confederation.    “This is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation”, said the announcer Conrad Charlton.  Then he introduced the Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons to pronounce the Commission inaugurated.
Among some of the other radio events in which Prime Minister Joesph Lyons participated, are the following:-
* Official opening of Tasmania’s first ABC station in a country area, 7NT Launceston, 1935.  He made this broadcast while he was in London at the Silver Anniversary Celebrations for King George 5.
* Official opening of commercial station 7BU in Burnie that gave radio coverage to his home town,
Stanley, 1935.  Relayed also by 7LA Launceston and 7HO Hobart.
* Official opening of new studio suite for commercial station 3AK in Melbourne, the only radio station in the entire continent that was on the air overnight, 1936.
* Official opening of station 2CA, the first commercial station in the national capital Canberra, 1938.

However, it would seem that the widest coverage for any of his radio broadcasts was the triple New Year’s broadcast that Prime Minister Joseph Lyons made from his residence in Devonport on the “Holiday Coast” in northern Tasmania on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1936.  At the time, station 7BU  in Burnie was just a new station, with a mere 100 watts from its recently installed second transmitter on mediumwave 660 kHz.  This was the station that gave coverage to his birth town, Stanley, and it was the station that he had officially opened a little over a year earlier.

For this 1937 New Years broadcast, Joseph Lyons presented three programs; one each for listeners in Australia, New Zealand, and the British Empire.  These broadcasts were coordinated through 7BU in nearby Burnie, they were transmitted via the new undersea cable running from Stanley underneath Bass Strait to coastal Victoria, and thence on to the ABC for a nationwide hook up, and then onward to Pennant Hills near Sydney for broadest to New Zealand and to the BBC London for worldwide coverage.  A truly international relay from a very small country radio station.

Marconi Radio International's 30th Anniversary - Special broadcasts on 3 and 4 January 2016

Greetings from Italy!

Marconi Radio International (MRI) began its shortwave transmissions on 4th   January 1986, with the aim of being a radio for DXers. That's why we have planned a special 30th anniversary broadcast on the following days and times:

3rd January 2016 from 08.00 to 16.00 UTC;
4th January 2026 from 13.00 to 16.00 UTC.

Our frequency remains the same: 11390 kHz and power in the region of 30 watts. To mark this milestone, we’ll broadcast a special programme in Italian with details on the history of MRI and interviews with two well known DXers of Italy: Dario Monferini and Roberto Scaglione.

Also our playlist will have something special as only songs with the word "radio" in their title will be played (the playlist  includes also some little known tunes like “Radio Tirana” by the Polish band Kult!).

But that is not all. In addition to our weekly DX programme in English "Italian Shortwave Panorama" and "Studio DX", produced and presented by Roberto Scaglione, we'll be airing  two vintage MRI programmes:  a DX Show in English of 25th December 1991 hosted by a female speaker, as well as the edition nr. 6  of "Italian Wave", a programme aired during  1986, which featured new Italian bands playing different kinds of rock music.

As usual MRI encourages reception reports from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts  are welcome! We QSL 100% and of course a special 30th anniversary QSL verification will be sent to acknowledge reports about reception of above mentioned broadcasts.

Our e-mail address is: marconiradiointernational@gmail.com but please don’t forget to include your postal address as some lucky listeners will also receive a printed QSL card.

Last but not least,  we need your help! If you use social networks, please post an announcement on Facebook  or send out a tweet the day  before the broadcasts.   You can also forward this message to a friend. This should help increase our  potential audience.

We hope to hear from a lot of shortwave listeners about these two special  30th anniversary broadcasts.
