Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

Hello friends,

Here in the Washington DC area, Inauguration Day (January 20) passed without incident. I monitored the local 2-meter repeaters for "situation" reports, but, fortunately, there were no situations to report.

Last weekend's reception provided more adventures in winter (or summer, depending on your location) propagation. Al in northern Florida has been experiencing multipath reception, resulting in some artistically enhanced images. These are from the Friday 1300-1330 show, 15770 kHz from  WRMI in southern Florida ...

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 187) are provided by Vlady in Bulgaria (also with Bulgarian description) and by Scott in Ontario (both Saturday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven images (1 x MFSK32 and 10 x MFSK64).

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 188, 22-24 January 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:37  MFSK32: Program preview
 2:42  Proposed human-populated mega-satellite orbiting Ceres*
7:39  MFSK64: Quantum communication network with drone help
10:39  Images of the week*
27:54  MFSK32: Closing announcements

Shortwave Radiogram Transmission Schedule
UTC Day UTC Time      Frequency Transmitter
Saturday  0330-0400 UTC 9265 kHz WINB Pennsylvania
Saturday  1330-1400 UTC 15770 kHz WRMI Florida
Sunday 0800-0830 UTC 5850 kHz  7730 kHz  WRMI Florida
Sunday 2330-2400 UTC 7780 kHz  WRMI Florida

The Mighty KBC (Eric is back!) transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 7-9 pm EST) on 5960 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC.  Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

“This is a Music Show” Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.com .  www.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/ @ThisIsAMusicSho

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC).

Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Thursdays 0000 UTC (Wednesdays 7 pm EST) on 3536 kHz USB.

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

Hello friends,

Well, today I had a haircut. Removed what seemed to be ten pounds of hair from my head. It feels much better! Things are slowly returning to normal. I hope you are doing well.

Last week reception was good or at least adequate in most parts of the world. Remember, if we get at least a 90% decode of the MFSK32, we can declare success.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 155) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine images (1 x MSK32 and 8 x MFSK64) .

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 156,  11-14 June 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:46  MFSK32: Program preview

10:08  MFSK64: Method to extract CO2 from atmosphere, make fuel*
14:38  This week's images*

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, July 13-16

Images from March 2018 programming
Hello friends,

Last week’s broadcast Saturday on 9400 kHz from Bulgaria went off the air a few minutes after Shortwave Radiogram began at 1600 UTC. At least on Twitter, @SWRadiogram and followers, we had fund speculating about why the transmitter went off the air (e.g., Kim broke another transmitter) and if it would return to the air before the end of the half hour (it didn’t).

A video of that ill-fated Saturday 1600 UTC broadcast is provided by Ralf in Germany, with the addition of the same broadcast quickly uploaded to Soundcloud to provide an alternative to the missing shortwave. (The images were very clear!) Another video of the Sunday 2330-2400 UTC show on 7780 kHz from WRMI Florida is provided by Scott in Ontario. An audio archive is available from Mark in the UK. And analysis of program 55 was prepared by Roger in Germany.

Also during the past week, Shortwave Radiogram listeners were receiving and decoding SSTV images from the International Space Station. Complete sets of images were received by Gaudenzio in Italy and Mercouris in Greece. (To generate more interest in Shortwave Radiogram, I need to find a way to transmit the show from orbit.)

This weekend is our usual pattern of MFSK32 and MFSK64, with four interesting news stories and seven images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 56, 13-16 July 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:34  MFSK32: Program preview
2:47  Climate change causing extreme weather*
8:10  MFSK64: Spiders use electric fields to take flight*
13:18  Young stars visible in new infrared image*

VOA Radiogram weekend schedule

Hello friends,

Last weekend, the frequency of the Saturday 0930-1000 UTC broadcast of VOA Radiogram was changed to 5910 kHz. I never received a memo about this frequency change, so I was not able to inform you. I apologize for the inconvenience, especially to North American listeners who were awake very early in the morning, only to hear no signal on the advertised 5745 kHz frequency.

Here is the revised and up-to-date VOA Radiogram transmission schedule (all days and times UTC):

Sat 0930-1000 5910 kHz (new frequency)
Sat 1600-1630 17860 kHz
Sun 0230-0300 5745 kHz
Sun 1930-2000 15670 kHz
All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.

With the time change in North America, the 0930 UTC broadcast is now at 4:30 am Eastern Standard Time, and even earlier in the more westerly time zones. If you prefer not to be awake at such an hour, the Audacity timer record feature (in the Transport menu) is handy.

8PSK tests

Most of you reported some errors from last weekend's test of the 8PSK-125 mode (about 315 words per minute). There were, however, several 100% decodes of the 8PSK-125 mode in Europe and North America. (Here's a recording from Greece of one such 100% decode. Try decoding it yourself.) According to VOA Radiogram listeners, it helps to have the Fldigi squelch off or at a low level for this mode, so that characters are decoded even during fades. A low audio level into Fldigi is also useful.

With realistic expectations about the chances for successful decodes, we will experiment with 8PSK modes again this weekend. Towards the end of the show, a VOA news items will be transmitted in 8PSK-125, then the same story will be transmitted again in the even faster 8PSK-250 mode (640 words per minute). You will need Fldigi 3.22.01 to decode these modes.

VOA Radiogram, program 84, 8-9 November 2014

Here is the lineup (all MFSK32 except where indicated):

 1:40  Program preview
 2:51  Agriculture with salty water*
8:36  New street lighting lower carbon emissions*
14:43  Glowing orbs mark former Berlin Wall*
21:19  Experiments with 8PSK-125 and 8PSK-250
26:29  Closing announcements
27:07  MFSK64 image: Veterans Day in the USA
28:46  Surprise mode of the week.

* with image.

Please send reception reports to radiogram@voanews.com.

The Mighty KBC will transmit a minute of MFSK64 Saturday at about 1230 UTC on 6095 kHz, and Sunday at about 0130 UTC (Saturday 8:30 pm EST) on 7375 kHz. Both frequencies are via Germany. Please send reception reports to Eric at themightykbc@gmail.com.

Thanks to everyone who sent receptions reports to VOA Radiogram last weekend. I'll begin work on the QSL and respond by the end of this weekend.

I hope you can tune in and write in.
