Land based pirate, Radio Signals from the Edge Conference takes place

Lithuania transmitters/Wikipedia

In what seems to be an international first, the University of Bedfordshire, in Luton, hosted a one-day land-based pirate radio conference last Saturday, 1st March.

Nearly 70 people attended, some with involvement in radio broadcasting dating back to the 1960s and others travelling from as far away as California, Greece, and Switzerland.

More than just a “talking shop”, this event included a wide range of sessions covering everything from the archiving of “pirate” recordings at the British Library, to the impact of such broadcasters on the evolution of legal broadcast radio services.

Deutsche Welle cancels 1386 kHz

Just for the record. Deutsche Welle canceled its broadcasts via Lithuania 1386 kHz, most probably from July 1 (exactly two years after their start on July 1, 2022).

In early July I heard only the DW famous interval signal instead of programming. Its former time slot 18:00-18:30 UTC is occupied by Radio Liberty again. DW schedules dated July 1 also show no Russian anymore..

Lithuanian station Nasha Lenta-Radio Pravda begins on 1557 kHz

LITHUANIA

Nasha Lenta - new broadcast on 1557 kHz. On Friday, 5 August at 1700 UTC, "Radio Pravda" [Radio Truth] began broadcasting on AM 1557 from Sitkunai in Lithuania. The station, also known as "Nasha Lenta" (Our Band), provides independent information in Russian, to Russia and Belarus and is funded entirely by private donors.

The programs are supervised by the Dutch Media Authority. Radio Pravda has been authorized by the Dutch Commissariat and the programs are produced in the Netherlands before being forwarded to Lithuania for rebroadcast on 1557 kHz. The Lithuanian authorities, in turn, issued a "rebroadcast license".

There are no political motives and there is no involvement of any government, including financial. "All that matters is the free flow of uncensored, verified information to Russia and Belarus."

The transmitter used in Lithuania is the Nautel RX50 [50 kW] which was still used by Big L on AM 1395 kHz from Trintelhaven in the Netherlands, in an attempt to reach a daytime audience in England. Later this station was used on 1008 kHz to broadcast the religious station Groot Nieuws Radio. Since the closure of the 1008 kHz, the transmitter has been stored in the Netherlands.

The results are phenomenal. The signal on AM 1557 is well received throughout Europe at night. There is a strong night signal in cities like Saint Petersburg, Moscow, and Minsk and it also covers the entire territory of Ukraine.

Second medium wave frequency for Lithuania

The average wave frequency of 1557 kHz in Sitkümai has just been assigned by the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission to Telecentras: officially known as Lietuvos Radijo ir Televizijos Centras (Lithuanian Radio and Television Center or LR TC). Telecentras is a state-owned company under the guardianship of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

It will now be at Telecentras to install and operate a transmitter and find tenants, who will provide the programs to broadcast.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the broadcaster of Viesintos displays a full display. So international stations have opportunities.

This decision can be appealed to the Vilnius District Administrative Court within 30 days from the date of entry into force. Other requests would have been received.

We have, at this time, no certainty on what power at the transmitter will be installed. It is also unclear whether the issuer will have international or only national reach.

While extrapolating... S7HP Neo Transmitters are in stock at USAGM!
