MYANMAR   Earthquake disaster update

March 28, 2025

On the morning of Friday, March 28, 2025, at 06:20 UT (12:50 PM local time in Myanmar), a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar. The epicenter was located approximately 16 kms north-west of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kms. This seismic event led to wide-spread destruction and prompted Myanmar to declare a state of emergency.

According to various media reports, hundreds are feared dead, although it is difficult to obtain accurate information. A rescuer in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, told an international media group that the damage is "enormous," and the number of casualties is "at least in the hundreds." Yangon, Myanmar's largest city and commercial hub—located about 600 km (289 miles) from the epicenter near Mandalay — also experienced tremors.

In the aftermath, there is limited information regarding disruptions to radio broadcasting services within Myanmar. Monitoring of medium wave (MW) frequencies around 12.30 past 13.30 UTC indicates that Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) on 576 kHz, the main service, and the 729 kHz , which broadcasts services to minority ethnic communities, remain audible. However, MRTV's 594kHz from Nay Pyi Taw , typically affected by interference from a strong Thai station, and 711 kHz (Yangon Yengu) are currently inaudible.

{later}  re: Myanmar - A few hours after the earthquake struck Myanmar, at 10:37 UT,  re: Myanmar Revised draft. Following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, MRTV experienced disruptions in its broadcasting services. As of 10:37 UTC, MRTV resumed transmissions on Yangoon 9730 kHz after a period of silence. However, broadcasts on {Yangoon} 5985 kHz and {Nay Pyi Taw} 5915 kHz remained inactive as of 13:00 UT. These interruptions are likely due to infrastructural damage caused by the earthquake, which has led to widespread destruction and communication challenges across the affected regions. March 28.

{later}  Myanmar 29 March 2025.
MRTV has resumed transmission on {Nay Pyi Taw} 5915 kHz and is back on the air as of 02:00 UTC this morning. Meanwhile, the broadcast on {Yangoon} 9730 kHz remains active and was clearly heard at 02:30 UTC. (Sarath Weerakoon, Mt. Lavinia Beach-CLN  4S5SL, via wwdxc BC-

March 28 - 29)
MYANMAR   7345 kHz  Thazin Radio via Pyin Oo Lwin bcast center, March 26; good signal today with Burmese popular melodies selection pgm featuring YL singers with organ, etc. at 1200+ UT noted coming clearly through CNR-7 which was in OM Cantonese tlks at this time. Fading in better and better, soon dominating China on fqy with program of mellow folk-pop Burmese tunes and spritely organ pieces. 1219 UT spritely organ tune, YL anmts probably an ad, and into romantic pop ballad.

Update on Myanmar's Thazin Radio

Myanmar - Thazin Radio has been silent on shortwave since April 7, 2024.

It seems shortwave transmitter Pyin Oo Lwin is having a bit of trouble. However, I caught them tuning in on 639 kHz just now, at 13:00 UTC, mingling with a Thai station. Thazin Radio is part of the Myawaddy Communication Center and is owned by the military in Myanmar. It's financed by Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL), which is a conglomerate owned by the military.

Myanmar - Thazin Radio from Pyin Oo Lwin site on 7345 kHz.

12.40 past 13.15 UT in vernacular. Lots of popular songs. Am I the only listener noticed improved signals from Thazin Radio. Has this station operated by Tatmadaw, upgraded its tramsmitter out put and the antenna system?

Pyin Oo Lwin of Myawaddy Radio center built in 2007 to 2008 years, some 208 far away kilometers north of new capital Nay Pyi Daw. Location is at  22 00 57.41 N  96 33 00.48 E or 22.01741925751829 N  96.55174262265729 E  northerly point in Myanmar.

Thazin Radio from Pyin Oo Lwin. I don't know the reason why Japanese Aoki Nagoya group circle recently put the 208 kilometers distant location - capital name - Nay Pyi Daw on their SW frequency database - for a year now, i.e. 6165, 7345, and 9590 kHz requested channels ?

Thazin Radio from Pyin Oo Lwin noted on 6165 kHz. The morning transmission of Thazin Radio was observed on 6165 kHz at 01:30 UTC, in a vernacular language. Whilst during the daytime, Thazin Radio can be heard on 9590 kHz.

Myanmar
Myanmar Radio, 5985 kHz at 1530. (Feb 2). Fair signal with intro to segment in English, noted as, “Good evening dear listeners. This is Myanmar Radio. We are broadcasting our final transmission for today, radiating on 5985 kHz, 0.13 meters, 576 kHz., 520 meters and 594 kHz, 505 meters. Now you can hear the news and weather news.” "Music from around the world” at 1543. Very enjoyable reception today.

Certainly one of their better days. Noted on 5985 kHz,  Myanmar Radio on Feb. 1, underneath a strong NHK-Japan, with sign on at 1129, with indigenous theme music (with NHK-Japan 1130 sign-off).

At 1130 announcer in vernacular. Myanmar Radio on 5985 kHz at 1559-1604, Feb 13. The Wednesday only edition of “VOA Special English,” with “huge rocks from outer space, or asteroids, are falling from the sky more than they have in the past.” Five minute show with good signal, so able to still hear program even after the China Radio International sign on at 1559.

The former Voice of America time slot for this show (1540+) is now all music programs, and noted today with songs from movies.

Thazin Radio monitoring

Myanmar
7110 kHz {usually 9 hertz lower} Thazin Radio in English, at 1430- 1500* UTC on Monday, September 3. Theme music, in English which sounded like the different and unique intro used during the Burmese New Year Water Festival (Thingyan), hence must be a rebroadcast. Intro going something like this:

"good evening ... listeners. This is Thazin Radio, Pyin Oo Lwin. Welcome to our evening English transmission radiating on 639 kilohertz and 7 point 11 megahertz. I wish you a happy Thingyan and I hope you all are in excellent health, wealth and happiness."

Easy-listening music followed by: "good evening our dear listeners. May I present for you some sweet melodies for tonight." Pop songs then presented a program titled "Myanmar Festivals", a weekly Monday show. Informative program about the Phaung-daw-oo Festival "held yearly during the eighteen day period from first waxing of the Thadingyut [the seventh month on the Burmese calendar] to the third waning of the Thadingyut", during which Buddha images made of gold are rowed around Inle Lake+ in Shan State. The highlight is when the images arrive at the town of Nyaung Shwe.

This very nice reception continues to be a pleasure to listen to!

Myanmar monitoring update

Thanks to Ron Howard for sending in his latest observations while monitoring Myanmar.

Myanmar
5985.0, Myanma Radio, 1231 UTC, May 3. They have returned to being on the exact frequency (ex: 5985.76v); assume this is the Naypyidaw transmitter. Normal Myanmar reception noted on 5915 and 7185.75v. They were not on 6035, where I heard Vietnamese via PBS Yunnan, along with a very weak (unusable) station underneath (probably Bhutan). Hard to keep up with all the Myanmar changes! (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

Myanma Radio moves to 7200

After watching 3 days (29-31 March) Myanma Radio moved to 7200 kHz 0030-0230 UTC this morning replacing 7185 kHz under the new 7 MHz channel area. They were in 7185 kHz during the past three days and only this morning (1st April) they started using 7200 kHz.

SLBC Colombo is still using 7190 kHz and yet to move on to the new area.

Myanmar: Cyclone survivors look tor radio

Squatting on the floor of his hut in the cyclone-affected Ayeryarwady Delta, Kyaw Kyaw gingerly adjusts his radio to hear the latest news from Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s newly established capital. “Radio is now part of our life,” the 30-year-old said. “We don’t pass a single day without listening to the weather report.”
In post-cyclone Myanmar, much of which is still reeling from the effects of Cyclone Nargis, such a response is not difficult to understand. The category four storm left nearly 140,000 dead or missing when it pummelled coastal areas on 2 and 3 May, and most residents complain they had little or no warning.
Almost four months on, reports continue to suggest that the authorities failed to adequately inform the delta’s 4.2 million inhabitants of the storm’s true severity on Naypyidaw Myanmar Radio - the country’s only state-owned AM radio station and the only radio accessible in the delta.
This prevented many from seeking adequate shelter sooner, adding to the loss of life and property, say residents. Radio has long been an important source of news and information in Myanmar, and many listen in for news of relief and recovery efforts.
Kyaw Kyaw, with two other families, purchased a US$5 radio - allowing them to listen to weather broadcasts - an activity they now recognise could well save their lives in future. However, most residents do not have a radio of their own - a fact prompting a number of private donors to quietly distribute cheap Chinese-made radios to cyclone survivors, though the distribution is largely without government approval.
Why radio?
Tint Naing, a driver from Daedayal Township, told IRIN radio was cheap and convenient, and required no more than a few batteries. Even if electricity is available, purchasing a TV is simply out of the question, he said, and transport costs to remote parts of the delta can drive up the price of a newspaper or magazine to as much as $1 a copy - a high price given his income of just $30 per month. In any case, newspapers and periodicals not only arrive late but are inaccessible to the many people who are illiterate.
Some also sees radio as a more objective source of information: “I like to listen to both state-owned and foreign [Burmese programme] radios like BBC and VOA (Voice of America),” said Lwin Maung, a 32-year old fisherman in Kunchangone who often tunes into the latter’s regular Burmese broadcasts.
“I want to compare,” said another resident, who regularly listens to the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) , which is broadcast from Norway and is largely critical of Myanmar’s military-led government.
Currently, delta residents can only access Naypyidaw Myanmar Radio, which is available nationwide and broadcasts programmes on the relief and recovery effort, as well as weather forcecasts three times a day. The country’s only two FM stations - in Yangon and Mandalay - have only limited coverage and cannot be heard in the delta.

5985 at 1443- UT, Myanma Radio Aug 21 Very strong reception this morning, with frequency bang on 5985 rather than the usual off frequency. Local music. Not in English during this time. Non-stop local music until 15:04 when announcements in local language. Finally went into English at 15:30. Still at good level, but with lots of adjacent splatter (on both sides).

9730.13 at 1431- UT, Myanmar Radio Aug 21 Very good reception with mentions of Myanmar. Over cochannel CRI. Indigenous language. I listened the following day and noted them at very strong level, but this time on 9730.76 kHz at 1427 UT.

Monitoring observation on Myanmar

MYANMAR 5986 It seems that a new service of Myanma Radio is relayed on 5986v in the local early morning. I've traced the new service on 5986v kHz from around 0000-0130 UTC daily, but it probably operates for longer than that. I haven't yet found any other shortwave frequencies for the new service apart from 5986v kHz in the local morning.

I don't know the official name for the new service, but it sounds like it's aimed at young adults. It carries a lot of pop music, especially covers of Western and Chinese pop songs sung with Burmese lyrics, interspersed with short announcements and occasional drama sketches all in Burmese. (Alan Davies-INS touring; the above mostly based on listening in Penang Isl MLA, 3-6 Jan 2008 via Bueschel, BCDX)

I think the station Alan is referring to is probably this one:

Xinhua General News Service: New radio station on air in Myanmar
Tue 30 Oct 2007

A new radio station has been on the air very recently in Myanmar mainly broadcasting music with brief domestic and international news intercepting its program, according to Yangon audiences who came to notice Tuesday.

The two-and-a-half-hour morning program of the "Padauk Myay" Radio Station, broadcast in local language from an unidentified location since last week and is believed to be from inside the country, is received from 5:30 a.m. (local time) to 8 p.m. on such frequency waves as FM (frequency modulation), MW (medium wave) and SW (short wave), the audiences said.
