Congressional letter reveals job cuts of VOA

Congressional letter obtained by AP outlines drastic job cuts expected at Voice of America

By  DAVID BAUDER and AAMER MADHANI
Updated 6:09 PM CDT, June 4, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration appointee overseeing the Voice of America has outlined job cuts that would reduce employment at the state-run news organization from over 1,000 people to 81.

The Voice of America, which has delivered news to countries all over the world for the better part of a century, has been largely silent for two months following an executive order by President Donald Trump. He believes Voice of America, and similar organizations like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, have reported with a liberal bias.

Most of VOA’s employees have been on administrative leave since mid-March amid reports that layoff notices were forthcoming.

Pitt's historic Voice of America site signs off

Edward R Murrow Transmission Station

Ginger Livingston The Daily Reflector Apr 11, 2025

A little known but still strongly held point of pride for some in Pitt County is that the community had the honor of being home to the last Voice of America transmitting station on United States soil.

That honor is no more now that the Voice of America and its parent agency, the United States Agency for Global Media, were shut down in mid-March as part of cost-cutting by the administration of President Donald Trump.

Efforts to obtain more details from the agency about the shutdown of the Edward R. Murrow Transmitting Station, also known as VOA Site B, were unsuccessful, including learning how many people employed at the site were either let go or placed on administrative leave.

VOA and RFE/RL status updates

Voice of America Fights Its Way Back
A federal judge halts the dismantling of the U.S.-funded international broadcaster (for now)

By Randy J. Stine

Published: March 28, 2025, Updated: March 30, 2025

Recent efforts by the Trump administration to defund and shut down international news organizations like Voice of America have hit some roadblocks this past week.

On Friday, a Manhattan federal judge temporarily blocked the White House from silencing VOA, according to a blog post by legal news service Law360.

After a morning hearing, U.S. District Court Judge J. Paul Oetken issued a temporary restraining order saying the funding cut by the U.S. Agency for Global Media, VOA’s parent company, was a “classic case of arbitrary policymaking.”

A group including six VOA journalists filed a federal lawsuit on March 21 to halt the cuts by USAGM, which is the federal agency overseeing all U.S. civilian international media. The plaintiffs in their suit cited the “lawlessness and discriminatory animus” of USAGM’s actions as reason for the court’s needed intervention.

The VOA employees, which includes VOA’s White House Bureau Chief Patsy Widakuswara, specifically named Victor Morales, CEO of USAGM, and the government agency’s special advisor, Kari Lake, in their suit. They also cited President Trump’s longtime displeasure with the news coverage disseminated by USAGM networks worldwide.

RFE/RL Back in Business
"
"This is an encouraging sign that RFE/RL’s operations will be able to continue"

By RW Staff

Published: March 27, 2025, Updated: March 28, 2025

Update: On Friday March 28, RFE/RL said it was still awaiting the promised funds described below. “Until then, we will pursue all necessary legal remedies to ensure that Congressional intent is respected,” it said in a release.

The U.S. Agency for Global Media has rescinded its letter terminating RFE/RL’s grant agreement for fiscal  2025. “The agreement is therefore back in effect,” RFE/RL said in a press release.

According to the website The Hill, the Trump administration restored funding for both Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the Open Technology Fund after the groups sued. The Hill reports that the judge will hold a hearing Monday if the agreement falls through.

Update on status of Voice of America

Voice of America wins in court, for now, as judge blocks Trump administration from firing staff

NEW YORK (AP) — The Voice of America can’t be silenced just yet.

A federal judge on Friday halted the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the eight-decade-old U.S. government-funded international news service, calling the move a “classic case of arbitrary and capricious decision making.”

Judge James Paul Oetken blocked the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which runs Voice of America, from firing more than 1,200 journalists, engineers and other staff that it sidelined two weeks ago in the wake of President Donald Trump ordering its funding slashed.

Oetken issued a temporary restraining order barring the agency from “any further attempt to terminate, reduce-in-force, place on leave, or furlough” employees or contractors, and from closing any offices or requiring overseas employees to return to the U.S.

Late-Breaking News - Declaration closes VOA

White House issues USAGM closures

White House statement issued late Friday evening announced intention to close grantee media under USAGM. . .

AI definition: The U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) oversees several non-statutory components, which are independent organizations funded through grants. These include:

* *Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL):* Provides news in 27 languages across 23 countries, focusing on regions with restricted press freedom.

* *Radio Free Asia (RFA):* Delivers uncensored news to countries with limited media freedom.

* *Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN):* Operates Alhurra Television, Radio Sawa, and digital platforms targeting audiences in the Middle East and North Africa.

* *Open Technology Fund (OTF):* Promotes internet freedom in repressive environments by supporting secure communication tools and technologies.\

USAGM non-statutory components are also called "grantees" essentially NGOs including:  Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio Free Asia (RFA), Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), Open Technology Fund (OTF).
Federalized parts of @USAGM are @VOANews and @martinews Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

Sharp reductions of grantee media ops under @USAGM have been expected for some time; EO from White House issued at 10:44 PM EDT was first formal move by administration to close them.

Duplication between VOA and grantee media has been focus of criticism for decades, including GAO and other reports, with language broadcasts/online ops continuing at VOA as well as grantee Radio Free Asia.

DOGE Targeting VOA And Radio Free Europe

Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) are in the sights of Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur appointed by President Donald Trump to oversee the House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Musk commented on a social media post by Richard Grenell, the U.S. Special Envoy for Special Missions, who said the radio networks are “state-owned media” and “are a relic of the past.”

“Yes, shut them down,” Musk wrote in his reply to the post. “Europe is free now (not counting stifling bureaucracy). Nobody listens to them anymore. It’s just radical left crazy people talking to themselves while torching $1B/year of US taxpayer money."

As previously reported by Inside Radio, DOGE wants to defund National Public Radio (NPR). DOGE Chair Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has asked the leaders of NPR and PBS, to testify to the subcommittee in the coming weeks. DOGE says it is looking into the “systemically biased news coverage” of the two public media outlets.

Additionally, a bill has been introduced in Congress that would specifically prohibit federal funding for National Public Radio. The proposed No More Funding for NPR Act of 2025 would not only cut off future funding of NPR but also require that any money that had earlier been allocated but not yet been spent be permanently rescinded.

Agence France Presse: Junta-led Burkina Faso Suspends BBC, Voice Of America For Two Weeks

Ouagadougou (AFP) – Burkina Faso has suspended the BBC and Voice of America radio networks from broadcasting after they aired a rights report accusing the army of attacks on civilians in its battle against jihadists.

The British and US broadcasters are the latest international media organisations to be targeted since Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in the West African country in a September 2022 coup.

"The programmes of these two international radio networks broadcasting from Ouagadougou have been suspended for a period of two weeks," Burkina's communications authority, the CSC, announced late on Thursday.

It said the decision had been taken because BBC Africa and the VOA had aired and also published a report on their digital platforms "accusing the Burkina army of abuses against the civilian population".

VOA Headquarters Honored as Historic Site in Journalism

February 02, 2024 9:40 PM

WASHINGTON —
A plaque honoring Voice of America's headquarters in Washington as a historic site in journalism was unveiled Thursday, with current and former newsroom leaders present to affirm the importance of the outlet's editorial independence.

The Society of Professional Journalists, or SPJ, designated VOA's Washington headquarters as a historic journalism site in 2022 and formally handed over the plaque on Thursday.

"We chose VOA because of its long history of ethical and independent journalism," Dan Kubiske, a board member of SPJ's Washington chapter, told VOA at the event.

This is the eighth time SPJ has honored a historic journalism site in the Washington area, according to Kubiske.

‘Radio Free Everywhere’ defeats the purpose of Voice of America

BY KIM ANDREW ELLIOTT, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - 01/05/24 1:30 PM ET

On Dec. 16, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu “expressed grief” over the death of Voice of America’s Kabiru Usman Fagge, “an enduring name across the Hausa-speaking world.”

The Voice of Nigeria, the country’s international broadcasting service, called Fagge “a household name” among Hausa-speakers.

Do a news search for Voice of America (VOA) and you will soon discover several stories in the African press citing its coverage of Africa. African journalism has made strides, but VOA is still a big deal on the continent.

Voice of America observations

Good morning one and all, does anyone recall the exact dates of operation of the Voice of America from Munich on 173 kHz LW? I discovered this quite by chance on 18 December 1969, but at that time it was only on air between 18:00 and 22:00 UTC, the first 2 hours in English and the second 2 hours in an unknown language.

The broadcasting hours would later be extended back to 16:00 to 22:00 UTC. Of course, this being on LW would give it a much wider daytime coverage than 1196 kHz from the same site, and enabled me, for

Example, to follow the progress of Apollo 13 on its way back to Earth after the April 1970 disaster. I did not have access to short-wave radio at that time. Last time I heard Voice of America on LW was, I think, during the flight of Apollo17 in December 1972.

The transmitter was on air for extended hours to cover that flight, but as this took place during the dark hours of December MW would provide clearer coverage when it was not broadcasting in a language other than English.

USAGM Condemns Kremlin’s Increasing Censorship, Responds to Surge in Demand for Reporting from its Networks

WASHINGTON— Despite the Russian government’s attempted censorship of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), there has been a surge in demand for their content, including their collaborative 24/7 Russian-language channel Current Time. In response, USAGM is expanding program delivery and access with the addition of more affiliate stations in and around Russia and the help of the Open Technology Fund’s tools and resources to circumvent internet censorship.

“It is clear that by restricting access to RFE/RL and VOA’s fact-based reporting, the Kremlin hopes to keep its own citizens in the dark and to hide the truth,” said Kelu Chao, USAGM’s Acting CEO. “The people of Russia deserve to know the facts about their government’s attacks on Ukraine and how the world is reacting. USAGM will continue to use its resources to bring unbiased information to light at this crucial time.”

RFE/RL President Jamie Fly said, “RFE/RL journalists in Russia have been unfairly slurred as ‘foreign agents,’ detained, and now their accurate reporting about an unpopular war is being blocked. RFE/RL remains committed to delivering objective reporting from inside of Russia for the Russian people despite these outrageous attempts to censor the truth.” Read RFE/RL’s full press release at this link.

Acting VOA Director Yolanda López said, “The recent threat by the Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor to block VOA and other independent media outlets now is a reality for many in our audience there. Our viewers and listeners in Russia deserve access to our factual news content at this critical time, not only about the ongoing war in Ukraine but also about all vital global events that impact their lives and actions. VOA will continue to promote and support tools and resources that will allow our audiences to bypass any blocking efforts imposed on our sites in Russia. Our journalists will continue their reporting, an example of a free press in action.” Read VOA’s full press release at this link.

Some radio, digital, and direct-to-home satellite transmissions continue to reach Russian audiences, and demand for VOA and RFE/RL's coverage is intensifying. For example, between February 24 and March 3, Current Time videos were viewed more than 240 million times across digital platforms. In addition, since Russia’s invasion, demand for Current Time content has increased dramatically among broadcast partners in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Latvia, Estonia, and Bulgaria. With the increase over last week, there are 261 affiliates now distributing Current Time content. Between February 26 and March 5, Current Time videos have been viewed on Facebook 76 million times, while VOA’s Russian Service and RFE/RL’s Russian Service videos were each viewed about 8 million times.

From February 23 to March 2, VOA’s Russian Service reported nearly 17 million video views on social platforms, a 159% increase from the week before, while website traffic soared 146%. From February 23 to March 1, audiences viewed RFE/RL videos 436 million times on Facebook, 305 million times on YouTube, and 83 million times on Instagram – reflecting increases of 265%, 406%, and 185%, respectively, over the previous week.

VOA Responds to Russian Government Plans to Block VOA Russian Website

Today the Russian government warned the Voice of America of its intention to block the VOA Russian language service’s news website, www.golosameriki.com, unless it removes coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government’s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, claims the news site “contains false messages about terrorist attacks or other kind (sic) of information of public concern.”

The media regulator demands that the VOA Russian service remove a news story from its site that provided factual reporting on the second day of the Russian invasion. The article included widely reported facts regarding Russian bombardment of cities, a Russian claim to have captured an airport close to Kyiv, and statements from witnesses as well as reporters inside Ukraine.

“Any attempts to interfere with the free flow of news and information are deeply troubling. We find this order to be in direct opposition to the values of all democratic societies,” says Acting VOA Director Yolanda López.

The warning to VOA follows a broader crackdown on the press by the Russian government. The same regulators also moved to shut down two Russian news organizations that reach large audiences, Ekho Moskvy and Dozhd, as well as Current Time’s website, a joint production of Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

“The Russian people deserve unfettered access to a free press and, therefore, we cannot comply with the Roskomnadzor's request,” said Acting Director López.

Opinion: The U.S. government left its own journalists from VOA and Radio Liberty behind in Afghanistan

Opinion by Josh Rogin
Columnist
Yesterday at 6:04 p.m. EDT

Now that the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is complete, many stories of heroic efforts to save Americans and Afghan allies are pouring out, each describing one facet of the chaos and dysfunction that plagued the effort to evacuate all of those in Kabul who had placed their trust in the United States. Among the most tragic examples is the story of how the Biden administration left behind more than 100 government-sponsored journalists, plus their families, after putting them through three weeks of hell.

The administration was warned early and often about the 600 or so employees, contractors, and family members who worked for U.S.-sponsored news organizations under the umbrella of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, a federal agency funded by Congress. They include journalists working for the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) who have worked in Afghanistan for years — at great personal risk. The Taliban has killed four RFE/RL journalists since 2016 through suicide bomb attacks, and the company’s journalists routinely receive death threats from the extremists.

Protests take place across Cuba as the country faces shortages of COVID-19 vaccines and basic necessities

Thousands of Cubans took to the streets in Havana and in other cities to demand vaccines and food on Sunday as the country faces a period of an economic crisis brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic. People criticized President Miguel Díaz-Canel, saying "down with the dictatorship," according to the Miami Herald. In a speech addressing the country, Díaz-Canel blamed the United States for the unrest, according to Reuters.

Cuba sees biggest protests for decades as pandemic adds to woes
Marc Frank, Sarah Marsh
HAVANA, July 11 (Reuters) - Chanting "freedom" and calling for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to step down, thousands of Cubans joined street protests from Havana to Santiago on Sunday in the biggest anti-government demonstrations on the Communist-run island in decades.

The protests erupted amid Cuba's worst economic crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union, its old ally, and a record surge in coronavirus infections, with people voicing anger over shortages of basic goods, curbs on civil liberties, and the authorities' handling of the pandemic.

Thousands took to the streets in various parts of Havana including the historic centre, their shouts of “Diaz-Canel step down” drowning out groups of government supporters waving the Cuban flag and chanting "Fidel."
