AMMAN, Jordan —  The news broadcast finished and Salah Abed began to dismantle the equipment: There would be no other broadcast that evening — and maybe never again — from the Radio Fresh station in the Syrian town of Kafranbel.

The town had been an icon of uprising and the radio station was its voice to the world. Activists relied on the station, along with skits and videos that frequently went viral, to lampoon President Bashar Assad and the international community’s inability to stop the carnage of Syria’s civil war.

Russia warns of 'new world war' starting in Syria

Foreign and defence ministers of the leading international states are meeting in Munich and Brussels following the collapse of the latest round of peace talks. 

Russia warned of “a new world war" starting in Syria on Thursday after a dramatic day in which Gulf states threatened to send in ground forces.

Both Russia and the United States demanded ceasefires in the long-running civil war so that the fight could be concentrated against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) - but each on their own, conflicting terms.

As War Rages, Syrians Find Hope on Radio

The Syrian people are plunged in civil war, and you’re hearing about it daily as bombing strikes are contemplated in retaliation for chemical weapons attacks on civilians.

Now a radio program launched this summer is providing a forum for Christians and non-Christians to tell their stories amid the violence and deprivation. They are offering and receiving advice and encouragement on the TWR broadcast of Hope for Syria.

Much like Joseph told his brothers as they groveled before him in ancient Egypt, God can bring good out of these circumstances despite the obvious horrors inherent in the bitter war and religious strife. Through Hope in Syria, says TWR’s Arabic Ministry director, “the Lord strengthens the faith of those who are experiencing hunger and seeing their kids suffer.”

Crisis in Syria - Monitoring Syrian Domestic Broadcast

As the crisis in Syria deepens and attacks by western military forces are imminent we turn our attention to monitoring domestic broadcast services from and to Syria.

Radio Damascus has been off of shortwave several years now but during a crisis you never know. Their old transmitters or frequency assignments may pop back up at anytime. Radio Damascus last transmitted on shortwave on 9330 kHz / 31 meter band and 12085 kHz / 25 meter band.

Radio Damascus is still on medium wave at 783 kHz for those in the region with AM monitor capability.

You can also monitor Radio Damascus daily broadcast podcast at  http://www.radio-damascus.net/.  The daily program is posted one day after the live transmission so you can always download on the above mentioned page the program of the former day.

If you have C/Ku-band satellite reception capability you can monitor Radio Damascus via this method.

Monitoring Syria on shortwave

Re your post "Monitoring Radio Damascus on Shortwave", I listened to the initial ten or fifteen minutes of the station's German and English broadcasts on 9330 kHz last night GMT (August 1, 18:05 and 21:10 GMT respectively). Both broadcasts seem to begin somewhat earlier - closer to the full hour - than scheduled. The German broadcast was affected by complete signal failings many times (appeared to be power failures, but that's just my personal guess), and spoken lines were otherwise only occasionally intelligible. English came in with a stronger signal - constantly O=3, except when the signal disappeared completely, too. But that happened less frequently than with the German broadcast three hours earlier.

Radio Damascus, Adra, 9330.00 at 2150-2235 UTC, (July 28). English with Arab string music in background. News summary, but the modulation was so poor, that only a few words could be caught.

Hymn at 2200 to station ID and schedule in Spanish. Additional station identification as, ”Radio Dimasque de la Republica de Syria,” mentions about Syria and Palestine.

Transmitter fade out for three minutes and returned as mention of ”boletin de información.” Obviously the same old transmitter with a very strong signal (S 9+30 dB), but severe transmitter hum and poor modulation. SINPO 53242.

Radio Damascus A10 schedule

Dear radio friends,
Here is the schedule of Radio Damascus for the broadcasting season A10. No changes have been made in times and or frequencies. So the A10 schedule is the same as the B09 schedule.

Radio Damascus is still aware of the problems with the shortwave transmitters (weak modulation) and the bad reception quality due to the very low audio. They are working towards a solution so please stay tuned as hopefully a solution will be introduced in the course of this year.
