Vatican Radio to celebrate World Radio Day on Feb 13

 

This World Radio Day, Vatican Radio celebrates 95 years with seven multilingual programs dedicated to the future of radio and the day's theme that 'AI is a tool, not a voice.'

On 13 February 2026, on the occasion of World Radio Day (WRD), Radio Vaticana – Vatican News promotes a special initiative in seven languages with seven radio programs that will become thematic podcasts dedicated to the future of radio, public service, innovation, and the relationship between media, society, and artificial intelligence.

The initiative comes the day after the 95th birthday of the Radio of the

Popes: 12 February 2026. Founded in 1931 at the behest of Pope Pius XI and created by the father of radio, Guglielmo Marconi, the Pope’s broadcaster represents one of the oldest radio experiences in the world, born to connect the Holy See with every part of the planet and to speak to people, cultures, and languages that are different.

At the heart of the programs will be the theme chosen for WRD 2026: “AI is a tool, not a voice”. A statement that becomes a starting point for reflection and dialogue also in light of the Message of the Holy Father for the World Day of Social Communications 2026, which recalls the value of human responsibility, discernment, and the authentic voice in communication in the age of artificial intelligence.

The seven programs will involve international experts, broadcasting executives, scholars, innovators, and professionals from the radio and media sector, called to reflect on how radio, a profoundly human medium, made of voice, relationship, and closeness, can inhabit the time of AI without losing its own identity.

Editorial: World Radio Day: RTI promotes democracy and Taiwan values

In honor of World Radio Day, Radio Taiwan International (Rti) released the following statement: 

World Radio Day is February 13 and this year’s theme is “Radio and Peace”. During times of war, the radio has been an important tool to promote access to accurate news and information.

Due to the Ukraine War, Russia has blocked foreign and independent media from operating in Russia. In response, the BBC resumed its shortwave broadcasts so that people in Ukraine can access news and information, demonstrating the value of the medium. Radio Taiwan International, for its part, has increased its Russian language shortwave broadcasts to Ukraine by one hour. It has also started a Ukranian Facebook fan page to show its support as people in Ukraine fight for their freedom. 

Rti’s Chairperson Cheryl Lai said, “Taiwan is constantly facing threats of the mind rather than of gunpowder, so we need to be on our guard. Rti continues its mission to broadcast the truth, foster dialogue and safeguard Taiwan’s values in order to build a foundation for peace.”

The United Nations has said that radio is a pillar to prevent conflicts and build peace. Radio programs can help people have deeper clarity and conversations about current affairs, which can help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.

RTI is one of the world's oldest radio stations in operations today and was established in 1928 by the Republic of China (ROC) government as the Central Broadcasting System (CBS) in Nanjing, China. It followed the ROC government from city to city during and after WWII, eventually coming to Taipei, Taiwan. It now broadcasts news, audio and video features about Taiwan in 18 languages.

The theme for the 12th edition of World Radio Day, to be celebrated on 13 February 2023, is "Radio and Peace" 

War, as an antonym to peace, signifies an armed conflict between countries or groups within a country, but may also translate into a conflict of media narratives. The narrative can increase tensions or maintain conditions for peace in a given context - for instance, weigh in on the rough or smooth conduct of elections, the rejection or integration of returnees, the rise or tempering of nationalistic fervour, etc. In reporting and informing the general public, radio stations shape public opinion and frame a narrative that can influence domestic and international situations and decision-making processes.

World Radio Day set for 13 February

 

Set your calendar - World Radio Day is right around the corner. The annual event is noted as the most "trusted media in the world", according to different international reports. This year's theme is devoted to "Radio and Trust.'

 This year's special radio event is scheduled on 13 February, with a special broadcast from Germany's Channel 292 station.

The Swedish DX Association will participate in the celebration of shortwave, including a number of interviews with well-known personalities from the Swedish DX radio scene, brief program features, and music. The program is being produced by Göran Lindemark. 

The special broadcast will air 1200-1300 UTC on 9670 kHz, with a repeat 1600-1700 UTC on 6070 kHz.

VOA Radiogram weekend schedule features World Radio Day

February 13 is World Radio Day. VOA Radiogram this weekend will include content pertaining to World Radio Day.

In addition to our usual MFSK32, one VOA News story will be in MFSK16. MFSK16 and MFSK32 are both 16-FSK, but MFSK16 is about half the speed and occupies about half the bandwidth (316 Hz). MFSK16 performed well in difficult reception conditions in past VOA Radiogram and Radio Australia broadcasts.

Marconi Radio International to celebrate World Radio Day

On February 13, let's celebrate free radio together on the occasion of World Radio Day! Tune in to MRI as well as Italian Broadcasting Corporation and Radio Europe! Thank you for your participation!

Greetings from Italy!

On February 13, Marconi Radio International celebrates the  role of free shortwave radio on the occasion of World Radio Day. That's why we have produced, in cooperation with other two free radios of Italy, Radio Europe  and IBC – Italian Broadcasting Corporation, a special 1 hour show in Italian.

This day of celebration is also an opportunity to remember why we love free  radio, to highlight the power of this medium to bring people together and to share this with shortwave enthusiasts.

With this in mind, we invite SWLs  to listen  not only to Marconi Radio International on 11390 kHz but also Italian Broadcasting Corporation on 6970 kHz and Radio Europe on 6875 kHz. These shortwave stations  will in fact carry over the air, next Saturday at different times, that special programme which includes interviews with people behind the operation of the three free radios.

As usual MRI, which this Saturday, 13 February 2016,  will be on the air from 09.00 to 14.00 UTC on 11390 kHz with 30 watts, encourages reception reports from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts  are welcome! We QSL 100%.
