The Mighty KBC schedule updates

 

Our regular transmission from 8:00-10:00 pm Eastern Time Saturday (currently 0000-0200 UTC Sunday) on 5950 kHz will not change.  Also, the 1200-1300 UTC Sunday transmission on 15770 kHz will not change.

However, the following broadcasts will change:

The 5:00-7:00 pm Eastern Time Sunday broadcast (2100-2300 UTC Sunday) on 5950 kHz will be replaced by 7:00-8:00 pm Eastern Time [2300-2400 UTC] Monday and Tuesday (Dave Mason on Monday, Uncle Eric on Tuesday) also on 5950 kHz.

The 0000-0200 UTC Sunday broadcast on 7570 kHz will be replaced by 0200-0300 UTC Monday also on 7570 kHz (Dave Mason).

And the 0800-0900 UTC Saturday broadcast on 7780 kHz will move one hour later to 0900-1000 UTC also on 7780 kHz. (Uncle Eric)

The first two changes will take place immediately.  The change on 7780 kHz will take place on June 14.

The Mighty KBC is slated for December 25 broadcast

 

On Christmas Day, The Mighty KBC will broadcast their final program on 5960 kHz via Nauen, Germany, at 0000-0200 UTC.

From January 1, 2023, The Mighty KBC will be using the facilities of WRMI in Okeechobee, Florida. The Mighty KBC is on the air each Sunday via WRMI, 2200-0000 UTC on 5950 kHz for the winter period.

SW Radiogram Thursday-Sunday schedules

Hello friends,

I am sending this preview for program 168 (3-6 September 2020) early because of disruptions to my normal schedule this week.

This weekend, The Mighty KBC moves to its winter frequency of 5960 kHz (replacing 9925 kHz), for its transmission from Nauen, Germany to North America, Sunday 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 pm EDT). A minute of MFSK64 is at 0130 UTC.

This past weekend, the Sunday 2330 UTC Shortwave Radiogram transmission had a surprise: a signal on 15770 kHz as well as the usual 7780 kHz. I have not heard back yet from Jeff White at WRMI as to whether 15770 will continue, or if it was a one-time-only transmission.  Try it this weekend.  It might improve reception in western North America, where 7780 is usually difficult to hear.

Also this  past weekend, our experiment with Thor 100 (352 wpm, 1800 Hz bandwidth) was more successful than I expected. There were 100% decodes of the text across the Atlantic and the Pacific, and in many places in North America. Thor 100 did show some errors in difficult conditions, especially deep fades, situations in which MFSK64 and especially MFSK32 were more successful. You can see the Thor 100 text decoding -- and use the audio to decode it yourself -- from this video provided by youngalientype in (I think) Ohio.

Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. Our destination was Boulder, Colorado, where son Ian is beginning graduate school. (our route is at the bottom of this email.) Along the way, we visited relatives in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. We were in St. Joseph, Missouri, for the full eclipse, but it was too cloudy to see the corona. We did experience the sudden and dramatic shift to and from complete darkness. My wife and I left the car, a little Chevy Sonic, in Colorado with Ian and flew back to Washington.

VOA Radiogram set for weekend broadcast

Hello friends,

The most interesting phenomenon during last weekend was the almost complete failure of the Sunday 1930 UTC broadcast on 15670 kHz to reach listeners in Europe. Propagation was worthless over the north Atlantic. At the same time, that broadcast was received well in western North America. Willy in Denmark was the only European listener to decode an image on 15670 (left). Compare it to the same image, same time, same frequency, decoded by Mike in Washington state …   

During some VOA Radiogram transmissions, the transmitter hum at 360 Hz mixes with the RSID, spoofing Fldigi to set the center audio frequency around 1140 Hz instead of the correct ~1500 Hz. One way to prevent that is: Configure > IDs > ID > RsID > unselect Searches passband.  With this unselected, Fldigi will adjust itself no more than 200 Hz than the audio frequency it is set to (1500 Hz in our case).

If we have bad conditions this weekend, one of the VOA New items will be in Olivia 64-2000.

VOA Radiogram Weekend Schedule

Hello friends,
The mystery MFSK32 transmission which has been heard occasionally before and after the VOA Radiogram broadcast Saturdays at 1600-1630 UTC on 17580 kHz was not heard last weekend by any listeners in Europe. It was heard by Mike in Washington state, at about 1542 UTC. The fact that the transmission was heard only on the US west coast introduces some interesting propagational questions about the station’s location. The mystery station also now seems to be transmitting before the North Carolina transmitter signs on at about 1545 UTC with an open carrier. Let me know if you hear and/or decode the transmission this weekend.

Many of us have noticed more hum on the 50+ year old transmitter in North Carolina. The strongest manifestation of the hum within the passband is at 360 Hz. This mixes with the VOA Radiogram MFSK32 signal which, centered on 1500 Hz, extends from about 1250 to 1750 Hz. The “ghosts” above and below the main MFSK32 trace is caused by mixing products: 1250 minus 360 = 890 Hz; 1750 plus 360 = 2110 Hz; and all frequencies between.  Roger in Germany provided this illustration:

For the most part the ghosts do not adversely affect the decoding of the MFSK32. However, the Fldigi RxID is sometimes spoofed by the lower ghost, resulting in Fldigi thinking that the digital mode is centered on 1140 Hz. This prevents a successful decode unless you set Fldigi manually to a center frequency of ~1500 Hz.

This weekend’s VOA Radiogram will be all MFSK32. Let’s hope the adverse effects of the geomagnetic storm that started on 25 October will have subsided by Saturday and Sunday.

IBC (Italian Broadcasting Corporation) has a broadcast to Europe on 6070 kHz and new 3975 kHz, Wednesdays, at the new time of 1800-2100 UTC.  The MFSK32 and Olivia 16-500 are still at 2030-2100 UTC. IBC has also added a medium wave transmission Saturday 2000-2030 UTC from Radio Studio X, 1584 kHz, in Terni, Italy, with MFSK32 at 2025-2030. IBC also has MFSK32 transmissions via WRMI in Florida: Friday 0125-0200 UTC on 9955 kHz (Thursday 9:25 pm EDT), part of its 0100-0130 broadcast. Hello friends,
The mystery MFSK32 signal returned last weekend.  It was heard and decoded by VOA Radiogram listeners throughout Europe just before and after the Saturday 1600-1630 UTC broadcast on 17580 kHz. Last weekend it was upper sideband. If the signal returns this weekend, any reception before 1600 UTC might be complicated by the carrier from the North Carolina transmitter, which usually starts around 1545 UTC. If you hear and/or decode the mystery signal, please let me know.

Radio Pushka (Радио Пушка) is a new addition to the Channel 292 schedule on 6070 kHz, with some MFSK32 and SSTV. See the schedule below.

VOA Radiogram weekend programming news

Hello friends,
Last week, some listeners heard and decoded MFSK32 transmissions just before and just after VOA Radiogram Saturday at 1600-1630 UTC on 17580 kHz. The source of these transmissions is unknown. This Saturday, please listen (and, if possible, record) on 17580 in the minutes before 1600 UTC and after 1630 UTC to see if the mystery MFSK32 returns.

Last Saturday at 0930 UTC, on 5745 kHz, using the University of Twente receiver in the Netherlands, I saw a faint carrier from the North Carolina transmitter. It’s probably too early in the season to decode from such a signal, but, if you are in Europe (especially northern Europe), check this broadcast as winter approaches. 

This weekend’s broadcast will be all MFSK32 except for one news item in Olivia 16-1000. If your reception condition results in errors with the MFSK32, the Olivia 16-1000 might have fewer errors.

DigiDX continues its MFSK32 transmissions this weekend via Channel 292, 6070 kHz, in Germany. The schedule is Friday (today) at 2000-2030 UTC and Sunday at 1100-2030 UTC (presumably including several repeats). This weekend’s DigiDX broadcast includes MFSK32 at the usual audio frequency of 1500, plus, simultaneously (a few minutes into the broadcast) at 600 Hz. You can decode both at the same time using two instances of Fldigi. Additional transmissions of DigiDX are possible during the weekend (consult facebook.com/digidx) as well as digital IDs by Channel 292 itself.

VOA Radiogram weekend schedule features World Radio Day

February 13 is World Radio Day. VOA Radiogram this weekend will include content pertaining to World Radio Day.

In addition to our usual MFSK32, one VOA News story will be in MFSK16. MFSK16 and MFSK32 are both 16-FSK, but MFSK16 is about half the speed and occupies about half the bandwidth (316 Hz). MFSK16 performed well in difficult reception conditions in past VOA Radiogram and Radio Australia broadcasts.

Radio Martí continues its tests of MFSK16 centered on 2500 Hz. Here is the schedule:

0558:40 UTC               1180  6030  7405 kHz

0758:40 UTC               1180  5980  6030 kHz

0858:40 UTC               1180  5980  6030 kHz

The actual start times vary. Each transmission is 57 seconds.

The 1180 kHz is medium wave, from the Florida Keys. The shortwave frequencies (5980, 6030, and 7405 kHz) are all via North Carolina.

You will probably hear noise on the frequency.

The email address for reception reports is included in the text transmission, but if you are not able to decode it, just send the report to radiogram@voanews.com.

We will probably change the mode to Olivia 64-2000, centered on 1800 Hz, sometime during the coming week.
