An owner of a home in the Bronx is warned for 91.3 FM broadcasts detected there in February

A property owner in New York City has received a “pirate letter” from the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau, marking the second letter in a week it sent to a location in the Bronx — this time to a residential dwelling.

Diana Richards, determined through New York City public property tax records as the owner of a home on Hill Avenue in the Bronx, was notified by the commission of an unlicensed broadcast emanating there on 91.3 FM. It was detected on separate dates this past February.

FCC Escalates ‘La Tropica’ Pirate Radio Fight In Connecticut

The FCC is stepping up its enforcement efforts against alleged pirate broadcaster Wilfredo Ayala, issuing a new warning aimed at the landlord of a Hartford property tied to unauthorized radio transmissions of “La Tropica Radio.”

On Friday, Enforcement Bureau Region One Regional Director David Dombrowski sent a Notice of Illegal Pirate Radio Broadcasting to the owner of a commercial building at 30 Arbor Street in Hartford, where unlicensed broadcasts on 94.5 MHz have been traced. Although the notice does not name Ayala directly, the signal is believed to be associated with “La Tropica Radio,” a station linked to him under FCC action earlier this year.

More N.Y. State Property Owners Get the Pirate Letter

FCC agents traced signals in Poughkeepsie and Mount Vernon

The FCC Enforcement Bureau’s New York office has sent the “pirate letter” to two property owners in Mount Vernon, an inner suburb of New York City, and another in Poughkeepsie.

In both cases the letters advised the property owners that unlicensed FM broadcast signals had been found emanating from their properties and that they faced potential financial penalties of up to $2.39 million.

In the first case, the FCC said it received a complaint of illegal broadcasts on 104.5 MHz and that in May of last year, it traced them to a property on South 3rd Avenue in Mount Vernon, which is just north of the Bronx. The letter was sent to Jeromio B. Edwards, owner of the property.

In the second case, the FCC got a complaint about broadcasts on 87.9 MHz in Poughkeepsie. In September its agents traced them to a property on Albert Road owned by Keiwan F. Morrison and Shadae S. Bailey.

KBLT was an unlicensed pirate radio station in Los Angeles that operated out of a hilltop apartment in Silver Lake from 1995 to 1998, until it was shut down by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). 

Founder Paige Jarrett (real name: Susan Carpenter) ran the station on less than $100 a month. At the time, as a freelance journalist, Jarrett also operated the pirate radio station KPBJ (named after the peanut butter and jelly sandwich) in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles.

FCC Plans Pirate Fine Against “Super Dany”

 

It says he has been running “La Bakana” in Hazleton, Pa.

The Federal Communications Commission plans to fine a man $40,000 for alleged pirate radio broadcasts in the eastern Pennsylvania city of Hazleton.

It has issued a notice of apparent liability against Brigido Danerys Gonzalez for radio signals on 90.1 MHz. It said it first became aware of the station, known as “La Bakana,” thanks to a consumer complaint, and that Gonzalez, aka “Super Dany,” has been directly involved in the operation of the station since at least May 2022.

The commission first traced the signals to the address of a grocery store. “Agents spoke with the owner of a supermarket located at the first transmission site who stated that he paid an individual who went by the name ‘Super Dany’ approximately $50 per month to advertise on La Bakana,” according to the FCC summary.

FCC Will Add Vehicles for Pirate Radio Enforcement

To help fight pirate radio, the Federal Communications Commission hired four full-time people in fiscal 2023 and is in the process of hiring more.

That’s according to the FCC Enforcement Bureau’s annual report to Congress about its enforcement efforts to fight illegal radio. 

The FCC has also ordered six vehicles to support the hires with mobile direction-finding equipment. “These six vehicles will be outfitted in the 2024 and 2025 calendar years … and will include specialized hardware and software for the detection for pirate radio operators,” it wrote.

“We also purchased additional equipment that will help us identify and locate pirate radio operators.”

The FCC must submit the report under the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement (PIRATE) Act, which became law in 2020.

A variety of standup comics made up the latter portion of the show. Gave numerous ID's with addresses, but it was hard to tell if it was Hunk a Junk Radio, or Hunk a Dunk Radio. Actual ID appears to be Hunk a Dunk Radio. Address is therefore hunkadunk6925@gmail.com. Male announcer appeared to realize that people were having trouble copying the ID, so he gave the ID numerous times. It was still hard to copy. Urban legends, things that go bump in the night. Even in shortwave radio, one night a year brings out the bizarre and unpredictable.

Radio Bob, one of my favorite former pirate broadcasters, once graced the airwaves on Halloween with an unforgettable radio voyage through the bizarre world of ghostly goings-on from Shake Rag, Georgia. Who knows what became of Bob, but last years Pumpkin Patch Radio reminded us that The Devil Went Down to Georgia - and perhaps you’d like to QSL “if you dare.” Satan Radio made an appearance with a mixture of backwards talk and death metal music, followed by Rig-O-Mortis’ multimedia special from the Voice of Doom.

Historically, Halloween produces more pirate radio broadcast than other holidays. This years weekend holiday on Sunday, October 31, will likely find more pirates haunting the airwaves, so begin checking on October 29-30 around 6925 (AM or USB), plus or minus 30 to 40 kHz. The majority of U.S. pirates operate between 2000-0400 UTC, however, some may opt for earlier broadcast.

If the station QSLs, most operators will announce their email address or postal maildrop address during the broadcast. Others may announce “QSL via FRN,” a reference the operator prefers to verify by scanning the logs posted at Free Radio Weekly website at www.frn.net. European pirate stations may offer a Halloween special, though most appear to be a scaled down version from North American stations. European activity is best heard in North America from 2100-0200, around 3900-4025 and 5800-7490 kHz upper or lower sideband. Check too between 1300-1900 UTC on 15055-15080 kHz.

If you hear Mystery Radio, you can use that station as a propagation indicator, for other European pirate stations. Programming is modern dance music and broadcast are daily on 6220 kHz. The best time to log Dutch pirate, Cupid Radio is during their frequent DX frequency test, usually on 15070 kHz anytime from 1200-1600 UTC. Fiji democracy group planning pirate radio

In a move inspired by pirate radio stations of the 1960s, political activists in the South Pacific are planning to position a Dutch-registered merchant vessel in international waters off the coast of Fiji to defy censors in the military dictatorship.

Opponents of the coup leader and self-appointed Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, hope to have the station broadcasting news and interviews by the end of next month to circumvent draconian media laws imposed on press, radio and television.

Zender Postoffice to return to the air
After the success of the test transmissions over the last week of Zender Postoffice, it will launch on Sunday 18th July at 18:00 UTC (19:00 UK time - 7pm).

After the launch, transmissions will be at random times, apart from a few scheduled programs. A list of programs can be found on the website.

6930 DSB. Radio First Termer. Already on when I started at 2201. Chatter between guys about pirate radio and other things, 2207 and 2213 Web site. History of the station by operator Dave Rabbit. Program seemed to be a loop. Still going when the computer battery died at 0149. Was getting a carrier on 6929.92 2305-2310, 2325-2332fair at times. Best in the last 20 minutes. 6924. Captain Morgan. Signal first came on at 2318:10 on 6924.64, and music about thirty seconds later and mainly uncopiable announcement except for ".we'rebroadcasting." Into Blues music program. Distorted announcement at 2348 with possible station ID, 0020 brief "Captain Morgan Shortwave" ID. At 0125 e-mail address.Announcements were distorted. Poor but best after 0140. Station still on at 0149. Drifting down to 6923.9. (3-4 July/Dave Valko, PA/Cumbe DX)

6955, WMPR. Signal came on at 2349:57, and rock music began at 2349:30.Canned ID by male and frequency by woman at 2358. Same announcement throughout the broadcast. Station off at 0036:47. Massive S-9 +20 signal. (3-4 July/Dave Valko, PA/Cumbre DX)

July 4
6925USB. SRV Radio. Tune-up about 0128, finally on by 0132 with Let Me Love You Baby. Fading a bit as Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes Texas Flood, Honey Bee and Tightrope followed. ID as, "this is SRV Radio...the best in blues radio" Signal fading more by 0150, total fade out by 0155. No mention of an email contact (or at least I didn't hear it) (Gayle Van Horn, NC)

6955USB. Devil Radio. 0153-0208. Signal poor with fading and co-channel pirate interference. Heavy metal tunes from Megadeath and maybe mentioned their website. Hard to copy with fading and low mod. (Rod Pearson, FL)

WEST LAKE HILLS, Texas (KXAN) - A former Travis County Sheriff is being charged for breaking the law by running his own pirate radio station and illegally broadcasting the controversial Alex Jones radio show.

Alex Jones, who describes his radio show as "conspiracy-tinted site containing strong opposition to socialism, communism, and the New World Order," said he had no idea Frank was illegally broadcasting his show.

Plenty of Thanksgiving novelty material, including the I Love Butterball parody of the rock tune I Love Rock and Roll." Political argument among the Pilgrims about whether the Indians would win the election if they let them vote, to segment about turkey hunting, a segment blaming Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years for the reason that Americans are too fat, and plenty of gobbling turkey noises. Said that listeners should turn off their radios now to avoid the grim fate of Harold in Paw Paw, WV who heard an earlier broadcast and did not turn off his radio. He got four flat tires. Others such as Al Fansome, John T. Arthur, and George Zeller were said to have suffered the same grim fate. Some rock oldies music to Twilight Zone noises at open and close. No address announced.
