* We Return to the Shortwave Scene on the Island of Guam: The KSDA Story

It was during the year 1968 that the leadership of the Adventist denomination, at their headquarters on the edge of Washington DC, began a renewed interest in the development of a shortwave network for the broadcast of Gospel programming.  At the time, Dr. Walter Scragg, born in New Zealand of Australian parents, was serving in the leadership of the Communication Department.

            Three years later, the newly married American couple, Allen and Andrea Steele, were invited to establish their home in Lisbon Portugal, where they inaugurated the first official broadcast from what soon became identified as Adventist World Radio.  Their first shortwave broadcast was inaugurated over the 250 kW transmitter number 3 at Radio Trans Europe at Sines on Friday evening October 1, 1971 in a service beamed to Eastern Europe in the 31 metre band. 

            A Master Plan for world coverage on shortwave that was developed during this era called for a network of four stations; located in Europe, Western Pacific, Central America and Africa.  A lengthy period of intense research was entered into in an endeavor to obtain a suitable transmitter location in the Pacific-Asian arena, and several different locations were given serious consideration.  Among the tentative locations under consideration were Sri Lanka, Maldive Islands, Philippines, South Korea, Hawaii, Palau and Guam.

            Finally, Guam was chosen and the Steele family, now well experienced in the international shortwave world, were invited to relocate on Guam.  The first temporary office for the new AWR shortwave station on Guam was in a small section of the Adventist mission office in Agana.   

            In September 1984, the FCC in Washington DC issued a Construction Permit for the new shortwave station that would be located on 40 acres of coastal land at Facpi Point on the island’s west coast.  This property was on the downward slope of Mt Lamlam, the highest mountain on the island of Guam.

            Work began at the new property on Wednesday September 11, 1985 when a bulldozer began to smooth a new access roadway, “Torres Adventista”, off of island Highway 2.  One month later on Friday October 11, a Ground Breaking Ceremony was held at the yet undeveloped property, with the official participation of the island governor, His Excellency Ricardo Bordallo. 

            At this stage, the Steeles transferred the office function of Adventist World Radio to a house in Agat, the Pink House, one mile from the radio station itself.  In addition, the new Guam station was designated as AWR-Asia, and the original AWR-Asia in Poona India was redesignated as AWR-Southern Asia. 

            Two years later on January 18 (1987), the new radio station was dedicated in an official ceremony in which the new island governor, His Excellency Joseph Ada, participated.  Nearly 500 people attended this gala function, including several denominational leaders from the world headquarters on the edge of Washington DC.  Official visitors from the the city of Agana arrived in a long motorcade that was escorted by local police on motorcycles.

            The parade ground in front of the gleaming white transmitter building was adorned with the colorful fluttering flags from 22 countries, representing the territories that would be in the main coverage area of this new shortwave station.  Among the grand musical items that were presented on the Day of Dedication were renderings from the Voice of Prophecy Choir that flew in from South Korea, and  a Brass Ensemble from Agana.  The Korean Choir also performed in special ceremonies at Government House, and also in the Korean Presbyterian Church in Agana. 

            The first two transmitters installed at AWR Facpi Point were manufactured in France by Thomson-CSF; 100 kW Model TRE2311P.  Transmitter No 1 was hard wired into Antenna 1, a TCI Curtain Model 611; and Transmitter No 2 was hard wired into a similar curtain, No 3.  Many possible callsigns, mostly some form of acronym, were given serious consideration but ultimately the very obvious acronym KSDA , foe Seventh-day Adventist, was chosen and approved by the FCC.

            Transmitter KSDA1 was given its initial test transmission at 2:35 pm local time on Thursday March 5, 1987, with a simple test announcement stating: “This is Adventist World Radio-Asia, KSDA Agat Guam, broadcasting on 11720 kHz.  This is a test broadcast.”  This transmitter began a regular schedule of program broadcasting next evening at 7:00 pm.

            Transmitter KSDA2 began a week long series of test broadcasts later in the year on October 24 (1987) and it was taken into regular service without ceremony just one week later on November 1.

            Several years went by, and two more shortwave transmitters at 100 kW were obtained, this time from Continental in Dallas, Texas.  These new units were designated as Model 418E and 418F.

            Dedication Day for KSDA3 was May 16, 1995, and the event was celebrated with a live broadcast in both Chinese and English beamed to Asia.  Transmitter KSDA4 was taken into regular service in January of the next year (1996), thus completing the original concept for AWR-Asia; four transmitters at 100 kW and four curtain antennas.

WRMI to showcase digital modes via analog radio


WRMI, Radio Miami International, will showcase digital text and images via analog radio in a half-hour special broadcast to be transmitted nine times (at least), beginning Saturday, 13 August.
The broadcast will mostly be in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz. There will also be segments in MFSK64, MFSK32 centered on 2200 Hz, and Olivia 64-2000. The program will include MFSK images, examples of non-Latin alphabets, and an Flmsg transmission. You will also hear “co-channel” music.

To decode the modes on the WRMI broadcast, Fldigi software is recommended. Download it from https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/fldigi/ . The main Fldigi website is http://www.w1hkj.com.
And you will use the companion program Flmsg. Download it from https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/flmsg/ .
To make Flmsg work with Fldigi, in Fldigi: Configure > Misc > NBEMS > under Reception of flmsg files, select Open with flmsg and Open in browser, and below that indicate where your Flmsg.exe file is located – probably somewhere in Program Files(x86).
For correct decoding of the languages with diacritics, or using non-Latin alphabets, in Fldigi: Configure > Colors & Fonts > RxTx > in the Rx/Tx Character set menu, select UTF-8.
For Fldigi to automatically select the mode and the center audio frequency of the mode, select RxID (upper right of the interface) by left clicking. In newer versions of Fldigi, also right click on RxID and select Passband.
You can decode this WRMI special broadcast as it is broadcast, or from your recording.

DWD for short, is the German Meteorological Office, based in Offenbach am Main, Germany, which monitors weather and meteorological conditions over Germany and provides weather services for the general public and for nautical, aviational or agricultural purposes. It is attached to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The DWDs principal tasks include warning against weather-related dangers and monitoring and rating climate changes affecting Germany. The organization runs atmospheric models on their supercomputer for precise weather forecasting. The DWD also manages the national climate archive and one of the largest specialized libraries on weather and climate worldwide.

Our August 9 (August 8 in the Americas on WBCQ) program From The Isle of Music includes our final segment with María Felicia Pérez, director of Coro Exaudi, winner of the Choral Music category in Cubadisco 2016, and our other special guest will be Jazz guitarist Emiliano Martiní, who leads the Natural Trio in addition to playing with César López (last week's guest) and other projects. We will also play some music by Los Dada, one of Cuba's most psychedelic bands during the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 - 07 August 2016

Solar activity was at very low to moderate levels. Very low levels occurred on 01-04 and 06 Aug with low levels on 05 Aug and low to moderate levels on 07 Aug. Region 2572 (N13, L=320, class/area  Dao/110 on 07 Aug) produced a C1/Sf flare observed at 05/1012 UTC. On 07 Aug, activity increased to moderate levels with an impulsive M1 (R1-Minor) x-ray event observed at 07/1444 UTC from an active region just beyond the SW limb. 07 Aug also saw numerous C-class flares. Region 2571 (N12, L=267, class/area Dai/150 on 07 Aug)  produced a C5 event at 07/2232 UTC. New Region 2573 (N08, L=177, class/area Dso/060 on 07 Aug) produced a C8/Sf at 07/1509 UTC. No Earth-directed CMES were observed during the summary period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate flux levels on 02-03 Aug and high flux levels on 01 and 04-07 Aug. The highest flux reading was 16, 206 pfu observed at 06/1445 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to minor storm levels. The period began on 01 Aug at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind regime. Midday on 02 Aug, activity levels increased to unsettled to minor storm (G1-Minor) levels due to shock enhancement from the arrival of the 28 Jul CME coupled with a CIR in advance of a recurrent, positive polarity CH HSS. Solar wind speeds increased
from about 310 km/s early on 02 Aug to near 550 km/s by midday on 03 Aug. Unsettled to minor storm levels persisted through 03 Aug. Wind speeds increased further on 04-05 Aug with a peak speed of near 675 km/s recorded late on 05 Aug. Winds speeds began a slow decay on 06 Aug. Mostly unsettled to active conditions were observed on 04-06 Aug. By 07 Aug, wind speeds decreased to about 500 km/s as effects from the CH HSS waned. Mostly quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 07 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 08 August - 03 September 2016

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class flares (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) on 08-20 Aug due to the flare potential from Regions 2573 and 2574. Very low to low levels are expected on 21 Aug - 01 Sep. An increase to low levels with a chance for M-class flares (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) are expected on 02-03 Sep with the return of Regions 2573 and 2574.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high flux levels on 08-15, 22-23 and 26-28 Aug and
again on 31 Aug-03 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 08 Aug and again on 31 Aug due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 09-11, 15-16, 18-19, 24-25, 29 and 30-31 Aug along with 01-03 Sep, all due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

This weekend's broadcast will not include an html segment. It will, however, include a VOA News story in Thor25x4. This mode is interesting because of its 2-second interleave. Thor25x4 might be able to resist fading, if it occurs this weekend. (We tried Thor25x4 in program 52, 29-30 March 2014, with good results.)

Return to the Early Wireless Scene in Florida

We pick up the story of early wireless stations in Florida with an outline history of the naval wireless station located at Warrington, on the mainland a few miles south west of Pensacola in what is known as the Florida panhandle.  Work on this station began in 1904 under a contract with the American de Forest Wireless Company.

            The first European settlement in the area was established by the Spanish in 1559, and some historians state that this was the first Spanish settlement in what is now the United States.  Some 1500 people arrived from Vera Cruz in Mexico on board 11 ships in August 1559.  However, it turned out to be only a disastrous temporary occupation due to the fact that a massive hurricane five weeks later destroyed the new settlement and killed a large number of the new inhabitants.

            Pensacola is currently in the news due to a very recent government announcement giving approval for the construction of a huge new bridge linking Pensacola city with the western end of the Fairpoint Peninsula.  This new bridge spans 3 miles of waterways, it will be 6 lanes wide with an additional pedestrian walkway, it is the third bridge at this location, and it will cost $400 million.

            In June 1904, the American navy awarded Lee de Forest a contract to install a wireless station  at the Warrington Naval Base on the edge of Pensacola.  Initially, plans for the new Pensacola station called for 3 towers at a height of 208 feet set in a triangle 300 feet apart, and a spark transmitter rated at 35 kW. 

            However, by the time Chief Engineer Frank Butler arrived at Warrington during the next year (1905), the station specifics had been reduced to two towers with a vertical fan shaped antenna system, and a transmitter rated at 10 kW.  The design of this new station in Florida was similar to the temporary demonstration station that de Forest had installed at the St. Louis Fair in Missouri two years earlier, in 1903. 

            At 8:00 pm on a date in 1905 that seems to be lost to history, test transmissions commenced from this new wireless station; the automatic continuous sending of the letter D in Morse Code.  However, no confirmation from anywhere came in, not even from the operator aboard a navy vessel just 2 miles away in Pensacola Bay.  Every incoming message stated “we do not hear you”.

            Over a period of time, the completed station was totally overhauled; none of the new wireless equipment seemed to be defective, yet the powerful spark signal from this new wireless station just did not propagate anywhere.  Engineer Butler questioned the operator of the nearby wireless station that had been recently installed by Western Union, and Western Union stated that they had encountered the same problem.

            The problem, stated Western Union, was that there were several distinct layers of white sand, clay, fresh water, and salt water, and the only way that they could transmit a clear signal was if the grounding system was driven 40 feet down though the different layers.  These distinct layers, he stated, provided some sort of “electrical resistance, or a dielectric”, which inhibited satisfactory propagation.        

            In order to ensure adequate grounding, Butler drove 12 iron pipes 45 feet into the watery sands, grouped together into a small circle.  The tops of the circle of pipes were connected with a heavy copper cable that led into the earthing section at the output of the spark transmitter.

            And again as usual, transmitter testing on 900 metres (333 kHz) began at 8:00 pm, the letter D was sent automatically and continuously, and this time reception reports poured in from many areas.  Naval wireless Pensacola station RK was now successfully on the air.

            When the navy regularized all of their callsigns throughout the world a few years later, station RK became NAS.  When on the air for the army at nearby Fort Barancas, the station was on the air under the callsign WZD, on 100 metres (3000 kHz).

            During that same historic era, another naval wireless station was installed on Anastasia Island, off the Atlantic coast of St. Augustine in the northeast of Florida.  This island, Anastasia, is a barrier island 14 miles long and one mile wide.

            The navy co-sited a wireless station with the already established lighthouse; the equipment was provided by the Shoemaker company, the station was inaugurated in 1905, and the original callsign was QX.  In that same year, lightning struck the wireless tower; and two years later a storm destroyed the mast and the antenna system.  

            In 1909, the navy changed the callsign from the irregular QX to the regular NAP; a fire destroyed the storehouse three years later; and in 1944, lightning struck the lighthouse and destroyed the radio transmitter.  On several occasions, a hand colored postcard with a photograph of the wireless station on Anastasia Island has been available for purchase on Ebay.

            The American navy established another wireless station in Florida back in that era, and this was installed at Jupiter Inlet, just north of Miami.  In the pre-colonial era, this area was inhabited by native Americans belonging to the Hobe tribe.  This name was shown incorrectly on early maps as Jove, which was subsequently transliterated to Jupiter, the name that the area still carries to this day. 

            The navy installed Shoemaker equipment also at this station which was inaugurated under the callsign RA.  In 1909, the callsign was regularized to NAQ, and the 3 kW transmitter was listed on 600 metres (500 kHz).  This station was intended to serve as an intermediate naval relay station between Arlington Virginia and Key West Florida.

            In February 1942, the German submarine U504 torpedoed and sank two American ships, SS Republic and SS W. D. Anderson, just off the coast from Jupiter.  Very rapidly, an intercept wireless station was constructed and co-sited with the Jupiter lighthouse and naval wireless station, and it was identified as Intercept Station J. 

            This wireless listening facility had a complex antenna system supported on 6 tall masts at 100 feet with the receiver and ancillary equipment housed in a cluster of unmarked white buildings.  At the end of four successful years in eavesdropping on enemy ships and submarines, station J was closed on July 15, 1945, and it was taken over by the Coast Guard as station NLM.       

            In addition to the sizable list of major wireless stations in Florida in the early years, there was also a long list of smaller stations scattered throughout this peninsular state.  During the 1920s, there was a whole list of communication radio stations with callsigns in the 4X and 4Z series, such as for example station 4XP which was operated by the Aeromarine Airways Corp in Key West for aircraft communication.  Then there was also station WX at Miami Beach which was part of the Tropical Radio Telegraph network, but that’s a story for another occasion.

Our broadcasts include some kind of programs now sadly missing from most shortwave radio stations: an old style DX show in English “Italian Short Wave Panorama” and Italian "Panorama Onde Corte", both with lot of recent logs, as well as a mailbag program in Italian. Our station identification announcements are not only in English and Italian but also in French, German, Japanese, Spanish and Catalan.

BBC Monitoring and Radio Berkshire to leave Caversham Park



At least 98 jobs at BBC Monitoring are to be cut as part of an extensive restructuring. Monitoring has been set a tough savings target of £4m from its current budget of £13.2m, which has to be achieved by April 2017. About 40% of the UK-based posts are being cut - there are currently 320 staff, around half of whom are located at overseas units. The monitoring service is also to be relocated from Caversham Park in Reading, its base since 1943, to central London by 2020. BBC Radio Berkshire which is also based at Caversham Park, will also have to move and is looking for new premises in the Reading area - they hope somewhere that is more publicly accessible. An edition of the BBCs Antiques Roadshow was filmed in the grounds of Caversham Park on 26 June, there were about 3,500 visitors. It is likely to be broadcast some time this autumn or winter. The historic Caversham Park mansion will be put up for sale by the BBC and although the building and some of its extensive grounds would be protected from development, its future is uncertain. In the past VOI carried "Exotic Indonesia" on Friday, but clearly was not on today and has been a long time now since I last heard that program. It's Thursday, so was looking for KGI (Kang Guru Indonesia) in English, yes at 1232-1258, heard their language lesson, but too weak to make out much, just a word here and there. Played some pop songs- sounded like Greg as usual with his Australian accent, as one of the announcers. By 1257, signal had improved and could make out their email address at the end of the program, 1258-1308 with light music.

AWR's "Grand Finale" Annual DX Contest

How Many AWR shortwave stations have you verified ?
Ever since Adventist World Radio was inaugurated more than 40 years ago, listeners in many countries on all continents have looked forward to participating in the annual DX contest.    Our historical records show that the first listener contest was conducted by the fledgling new AWR back during the year 1972, just a few months after the official inauguration on 1 October 1971.   The longest series of annual DX contests began under the original Adventist World Radio in Asia, AWR-Asia in Poona India, and these were introduced just a few years later, in 1977.  Since then, this well established AWR DX program has transmigrated from Asia to the United States, and the name likewise has evolved into the now familiar “Wavescan”. 
Throughout all of these intervening years, the annual winner’s list contains the names of well known international radio monitors living on all continents.  In addition, the long roster of regional winners over the years includes a host of names, international radio monitors living in up to a hundred different countries.  Any and all entrants have an equal possibility of winning one of the many awards that are available each year. 

As Adventist World Radio enters into its 45th year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual “Wavescan” DX contest for the year 2016.  This year’s contest is planned as the last ever contest from the AWR DX program “Wavescan” and it comes to you under the title How many AWR shortwave sites have you verified?  In short, you are invited to make up a list of all of your AWR QSL cards, one only for each different AWR shortwave site.   
A. How Many AWR Shortwave Sites Have You Verified? You are invited to make up a tabulated list of all of your AWR QSL cards, one only for each AWR shortwave site.  You may also include reception reports for any AWR shortwave site that you have not yet verified, up to a maximum of three additional sites.  The listing of each QSL card for each AWR site that you have verified should show the station name, location, country, frequency, date and a brief description of the card.  Here is a sample listing showing how to give the information:-

E. Three Radio Cards Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry.  These cards may be old or new, and they may be  QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc.  Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.

This contest will run through the month of August 2016, and all contest entries should be postmarked at your local post office anywhere in the world on any date up to the end of the month of August 2016 and they should be received at the AWR temporary post office address as given below no later than the end of the month of September 2016.
• Post your entry with all items to Adventist World Radio, remembering that neatness and preparation, will all feature in the judging procedure.  Due consideration will also be given to the area of the world in which the contestant lives. 
• Where possible, please enclose return postage in the form of currency notes in any international currency, or mint postage stamps.  Please note that IRC coupons are too expensive for you to buy, and they are no longer valid in the United States.  
• Please enclose your postal address label also.
• The awards for the 2016 AWR “Grand Finale DX Contest” will be similar to all previous contests.  There will be a special award for the world winner, one of Jerome Berg’s radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2017 for each continental winner.  In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.

Special Event Station GB5RC-Radio Caroline, scheduled for August 5-8


Over the weekend of 5-8 August 2016, amateur radio operators from the Martello Tower Group will be running GB5RC, a special event station to celebrate offshore station Radio Caroline. Now an online service, Radio Caroline started as an offshore "pirate" station over five decades ago. The Martello Group will be operating live from the MV Ross Revenge, using verticals for 40m, 20m (adjustable to 17m), 15m (adjustable for 12m) and 10m upon the stern of the ship.

Our August 2 (August 1 in the Americas on WBCQ) program includes more of María Felicia Pérez, director of Coro Exaudi, winner of the Choral Music category in Cubadisco 2016, and we will have a special extended segment with César López, whose Habana Ensemble is one of the most important and exciting Jazz combos in Cuba today. His album Sonajero won Cubadiscos in both Instrumental Music and Recording this year. He granted us a wonderful interview, and we will have a lot of exciting music.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 - 31 July 2016

Solar activity was very low throughout the period with the exception of a single C1 flare at 25/0909 UTC from departed Region 2567 (N05, =166, class/area Dki/380 on 21 July). Region 2570 (N10E24,
Axx/alpha) was the sole numbered sunspot for the majority of the period but was unimpressive and did not contribute any significant flaring. A 25 degree filament, centered near N01E06, was observed
lifting off of the visible disk in SDO/AIA imagery beginning at 28/1620 UTC. ENLIL analysis showed an Earth-directed component with CME arrival expected early on 02 August.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 25, 28-29 July and high levels on 26-27 and 30-31 July.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to active levels on 25 July due to residual influence from a weak transient that arrived at  earth on 24 July. This shock enhancement was likely associated with
flare activity from 20 July. Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 26-27 July under a nominal solar wind regime. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 28-29 July after the arrival of a CIR
followed by a transition into a negative polarity CH HSS. Wind speeds reached 600 km/s while total field (Bt) measurements were as high as 17 nT. Geomagnetic field activity returned to quiet
conditions on 30-31 July.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 August - 27 August 2016

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels from 01-04 August. Low levels with a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares are expected from 05-19 August with the return of Regions
2565 and 2567. A return to very low levels is expected on 20-27 August.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 08, 5-15, 18-22, 25-27 August due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal to moderate levels are expected
for the remainder of the forecast period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 04-05, 10-11, 15-16, 24-25 August with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 03 August due to recurrent CH HSS activity. A CME associated with the eruptive filament from 28 July is likely to arrive early on 02 August causing unsettled to G2 (Moderate) storm levels. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected for the remainder
of the period.

Ascension Islands offers new postage stamps of BBC Relay Station

The Postal Administration of Ascension Island has issued a series of postage stamps to celebrate di 50th anniversary of the BBC Atlantic relay. The issue consist of 6 stamps and the official first day official cover. All received today via international resgistered mail. Pictures and info available here:
