Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 - 28 May 2023

Solar activity was at low to moderate level. Region 3311 (N18, L=274, class/area=Eai/470 on 24 May) produced the strongest event of the period, an M3 (R1 - Minor) flare at 23/1213 UTC. Three other, smaller, M-class events were also produced by the region on 22 May and 24 May. Regions 3315 (S17, L=235, class/area=Ekc/800 on 28 May) and 3312 (S23, L=262, class/area=Cri/070 on 22 May) also produced M-class activity. The remaining 8 numbered active regions on the visible disk were either quiet or only produced C-class events during the reporting period.

Other activity included Type II radio sweeps on 22, 23 and 27 May; however, none of the events were associated with ejecta that was suspected to be Earth-directed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the entire week due higher levels of geomagnetic activity followed by sustained elevated solar wind speeds.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 levels were observed on 22 May as transient influence transitioned in influence from a negative polarity CH HSS. As the HSS continued, active conditions on 23 May
further decreased to unsettled levels over 24-25 May. As solar wind speeds returned to nominal levels on 26-27 May, the geomagnetic field responded with quiet conditions. A minor increase to unsettled conditions was observed on 28 May following prolonged periods of southward Bz.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 May - 24 June 2023

Solar activity is likely to be at low to moderate levels (R1-R2 Minor-Moderate) throughout the outlook period due to several complex regions on the visible disk and the anticipated return of several regions that have produced moderate-level activity returning from the far side of the Sun.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from moderate to high levels. High levels are likely on 03-05 May, 04-10 Jun, and 19-24 Jun in response to elevated wind speeds from multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder
of the outlook, period is likely to be at moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to (Minor) geomagnetic storm conditions. G1 conditions are likely on 02 Jun and 18 Jun; active conditions are likely on 29 May, 03-04 Jun, and 19-20 Jun; unsettled conditions are likely on 30 May, 05-06 Jun, and 21 Jun. All elevated levels of geomagnetic field activity are a response to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 August - 04 September 2022

Solar activity ranged from low to high levels during the period. High activity levels were observed on 29 Aug when Region 3088 (S27, L=300, class/area Dkc/650 on 27 Aug) produced an M8.6 x-ray event at 29/1108 UTC. During the 29th, the region produced three additional M-class events including an M2.5 at 29/1456 UTC with an associated Type II (286 km/s), a Type IV Sweep and a 1000 sfu Tenflare. Moderate levels were observed on 30 Aug with a pair of small M-class events observed from Rgn 3088, including a long duration (LDE) M2.1 at 30/1929 UTC. A weak Type II (332 km/s) Sweep was observed with a C5.4 event at 30/1720 UTC.

Low activity levels were observed on 31 Aug - 04 Sep with numerous (43) C-class flares observed from Rgn 3089 (S23, L=195, class/area Ekc/520 on 04 Sep). Additional C-class activity was observed from Rgns 3092 (S09, L=095, class/area Cao/170 on 02 Sep), 3093 (S27, L=105, class/area Cro/030 on 04 Sep) and 3094 (N20, L=069, class/area Cao/100 on 02 Sep). Some weak CME activity was observed off the SW limb on 02 Sep that was analyzed as having a potential, weak Earth-directed component for 06 Sep.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. A weak enhancement to 0.88 pfu was observed at 30/0210 UTC associated with W limb M-class activity from Rgn 3088.

The GOES-16 greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels on 29 Aug - 03 Sep and reached high levels on 04 Sep with a peak flux of 6,689 pfu observed at 04/1625 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to active levels on 29 Aug - 02 Sep due to negative polarity CH HSS influence coupled with SW limb CME effects on 29-30 Aug. By 03 Sep, and through 04 Sep, a large equatorial, positive polarity CH HSS moved into a geoeffective position. Steady Minor to Major geomagnetic storm activity was observed through both days. Total field values of 12 nT coupled with steady -12 nT Bz values were observed on the 3rd and 4th. Wind speeds reached maximum speeds of near 685 km/s through most of 04 Sep.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 September - 01 October 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels through 10 Sep. From 11 - 25 Sep, a chance for R1-R2, (Minor-Moderate) flare activity exists as previously active regions return to the visible disk. A return to very low levels is expected from 26 Sep - 01 Oct.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit from 05 - 10 Sep and 26 Sep - 01 Oct. There is a slight chance for a proton event from 11 Sep - 01 Oct.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at high levels on 05 - 11 Sep, 15 - 19 Sep, 25 - 28Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 15 - 21 August 2022

Solar activity was reached moderate levels on 15 Aug and 17-19 Aug with High levels observed on 16 Aug mostly due to M-class flaring from Region 3078 (S23, L=030, class/area Dao/270 on 16 Aug). This region was responsible for 57 C-class flares and 10 M-class flares.
The largest was an M5 at 16/0758 UTC. Multiple CMEs were observed during the period with Earth-directed components. These included a partial-halo CME at 14/1325 UTC off the W limb associated with a LDE C2 flare at 14/1235 UTC from Region 3076 (N16,l=061, class/area Dao/170 on 12 Aug), a CME at 15/0516 UTC off the SW limb associated with a filament eruption centered near S21W43 at 15/0400 UTC, a CME at 17/1430 UTC off the SW limb associated with an M2 flare at 17/1345 UTC from Region 3078, a CME at 18/2256 UTC off the SW limb associated with C4 flare from Region 3078, and a CME at 19/0500 UTC off the SW limb associated with an M1/Sn flare at 19/0444 UTC from Region 3078. Analysis of these CMEs appeared to be combined arrivals early on 18 Aug, late on 19 Aug, and early on 22 Aug.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 18 Aug and reached high levels on 15-17 and 19-21 Aug. The peak flux was 7,580 pfu observed at 15/1520 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm levels. The period began under the waning effects of a positive polarity CH HSS. Solar wind speed decreased from near 500 km/s to 360 km/s by 16/0355 UTC. At 16/1155 UTC a solar sector boundary crossing was observed changing polarity from positive to negative. The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels on 15-16 Aug. On 17 Aug at 0214 UTC, a weak shock was observed at the DSCVR spacecraft. The total field increased from 8 nT to 18 nT while solar wind speed increased from 385 km/s to 434 km/s. A subsequent geomagnetic sudden impulse was observed at 17/0303 UTC (23 nT at HAD magnetometer). Total field remained in the 10-18 nT range through 18/1510 UTC. Solar wind speed continued to increase to near 570-600 km/s. This was likely the arrival of the 14 Aug CME followed by the onset of a negative polarity CH HSS.

Another shock was observed at 19/1702 UTC with a total field increase from 5 nT to 12 nT as the solar wind speed increased from 540 km/s to 630 km/s. A sudden impulse was observed at 20/1812 UTC (8 nT at SIT magnetometer). Solar wind peaked at around 676 km/s at 19/2048 and remained in the 470 km/s to 600 km/s range through the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm levels on 17 Aug, quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 18-19 Aug, and quiet to active levels on 20-21 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 August - 17 September 2022

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low on 22 Aug - 02 Sep and 17 Sep. An increased chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) levels is likely on 03-16 Sep with the return of Region 3078.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 22-26 Aug, 28 Aug - 01 Sep, 04-12 Sep, and again on 14-17 Sep due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 22-24 Aug, 27-30 Aug, 03-10 Sep, 13-17 Sep with G1 (Minor) storm conditions likely on 22 Aug, 03-05 Sep, and G2 (Moderate) levels likely on 03-04 Sep due to recurrent CH HSSs. There is a possibility of a glancing blow from the 18-19 Aug CMEs arriving on 22 Aug.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 August 2020

Solar activity was at very low levels on 03-07 and 09 Aug. Low levels were reached on 08 Aug as Region 2770 (N23, L=023, class/area Cso/070 on 06 Aug) produced an isolated C1/Sn flare at 08/0349 UTC. This was the first C-class flare observed since 29 May. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels. Moderate levels were observed on 03-04 Aug. High levels were observed on 05-09 Aug due to coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) influence. The maximum flux of the period was
2,815 pfu observed at 05/1630 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began with the onset of a positive polarity CH HSS. Total field reached 10 nT at the beginning of the period and the solar wind speed reached a maximum of 754 km/s at 04/0516 UTC. By early on 05 Aug, solar wind speed was in decline and nominal background levels returned by 07 Aug. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 03-04 Aug and quiet conditions on 05-09 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
10 August - 05 September 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low levels with a slight chance for isolated C-class flares through 15 Aug. Very low levels are expected for the rest of the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-11 Aug and again on 01-05 Sep due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach unsettled levels on 29-31 Aug with active levels likely on 30 Aug due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. New Region 2767  (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) rotated onto the disk on 21 Jul, but was quiet and stable. A slow-moving, partial halo CME was detected in coronagraph imagery in the NE quadrantat at about 19/1135 UTC. Subsequent model analysis indicated an Earth-directed component would likely become geoeffective on 24-25 Jul. No other CME activity was detected during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels 20-23 Jul. Field conditions reached unsettled to active levels on 24-25 Jul due to effects from the 19 Jul CME. A return to quiet conditions was observed on 26 Jul. Solar wind parameters reflected enhanced conditions on 24-25 Jul as a result of CME effects. Solar wind speeds increased from approximately 300 km/s to near 415 km/s. Total field peaked at 11 nT while the Bz component dropped south to -10 nT. Density levels increased to 28 particles/cc. Ambient solar wind parameters were present on 20-23 Jul and 26 Jul.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July - 22 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels thoughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 28-29 Jul due to a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 - 12 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the summary period. Region 2766 (N05, L=122, class/area Bxo/010 on 10 Jul) was the only spotted region and decayed to plage by 11 Jul.

A filament eruption near S29W18 produced a faint, slow-moving CME signature in LASCO/SOHO C2 imagery beginning at 09/0724 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested a possible glancing blow from the CME around 14 Jul.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the summary period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet. No significant periods of southward Bz were observed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 July - 08 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low over the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to continue at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Unsettled conditions are likely on 13 Jul and 31 Jul - 01 Aug in response to coronal hole influence. Active conditions are also likely on 14 Jul due to the anticipated arrival of a slow-moving transient that left the Sun on 09 Jul. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels and under a nominal solar wind environment.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 June - 05 July 2020

Solar activity was very low. Region 2766 (N06 L=117, class/area Bxo/beta on 04 Jul) was the only active region on the visible disk. The region was in decay at the end of the reporting period.

Other activity included a DFS, approximately 18 degrees in length, which erupted in the SE quadrant beginning around 05/0630 UTC. Subsequent SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery showed the related CME signature after 05/1412 UTC. Analysis for an Earth-directed component is
ongoing.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal background to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled. Unsettled levels were observed on 01 Jul due to sustained southward Bz and on 04-05 Jul in response to a positive polarity CH HSS. The remainder of the summary period was at quiet levels under nominal solar windco nditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 July - 01 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal background to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled  levels. A recurrent positive polarity CH HSS is expected to cause isolated unsettled levels on 06 Jul and again on 31 Jul - 01 Aug. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels. Analysis and modeling of the 5 Jul CME is not complete and the presence of an Earth-directed component is possible.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 February - 01 March 2020

Solar activity was very low over the period under a spotless solar disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels on 24-25 Feb, 27 Feb, and again on 29 Feb-01 Mar. High levels occurred on 26 and 28 Feb with a peak flux of 2,170 pfu observed at 26/1950 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels over the period. Solar wind parameters were at nominal levels from 24 Feb through early on 28 Feb. At 28/0650 UTC total field then began to increase to around 8 nT while the Bz component became variable between +/-7 nT. Solar wind speed initially increased to 503 at 29/0248 UTC before increasing a second time to 573 km/s at the 29/1942 UTC. This increase in solar wind parameters was due to a connection to a negative polarity southern crown coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) followed by a connection with an isolated negative polarity CH HSS. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet levels on 24-28 Feb and quiet to active levels on 29 Feb-01 Mar.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 March - 28 March 2020

Solar activity is expected to continue at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate levels on 02-03, 10-18, 22-28 Mar. High levels are expected on 04-09 and 19-21 Mar due to the CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels on 02-07, 18-20, 27-28 Mar with active periods likely on 02, 19, 27-28 Mar due to CH HSS activity.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 February 2020

Solar activity was very low. No active regions with sunspots were observed and no apparent earth-directed CMEs were detected this period. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached moderate levels on 17-19 February and high levels on 20-23 February. Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 18 Feb and active to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 19 Feb. The enhanced geomagnetic field activity on 18-19 Feb were attributed to the passage of a transient solar wind feature. The active conditions were once again observed on 21 February, and due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Generally quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions were then observed throughout the remainder of the week.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 February - 21 March 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 24 February-01 March, 05-09 March, and 19-21 Mar.ch throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 26 Feb, 04-05 Mar, and 19 Mar due to the infuences of multiple recurrent CH HSSs. Generally quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions and are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the outlook period under a nominal solar wind regime.
