Instead of falling to the dozer blade, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program has new life.
In mid-August, U.S. Air Force General Tom Masiello shook hands with UAF's Brian Rogers and Bob McCoy, transferring the powerful upper-atmosphere research facility from the military to the university.
You may have heard of HAARP. Nick Begich wrote a book about it. Jesse Ventura tried to bully his way past the Gakona gate during a TV episode of "Conspiracy Theory." Muse recorded a live album, HAARP, at Wembley Stadium from a stage filled with antennas meant to resemble those standing on a gravel pad off the Tok Cutoff Road.
The science-fiction assertions of caribou walking backwards, human mind control and HAARP's ability to change the weather have made researchers wince. It's hard to describe a complicated instrument that sends invisible energy into a zone no one can see.
HAARP is a group of high-frequency radio transmitters powered by four diesel tugboat generators and one from a locomotive. The transmitters send a focused beam of radio-wave energy into the aurora zone. There, that energy can stimulate a speck of the electrical sun-Earth connection about 100 miles above our heads.

On the Air in Tokyo Bay

Tokyo Bay is an expansive and well-protected bay on the eastern side of the main Japanese island of Honshu.  Several areas of inner Tokyo Bay have been dredged, and several small and ornate islands have also been formed.  Some of Japans largest cities extend inland from the shoreline of Tokyo Bay, including Yokohama, Kawasaki and Chiba, as well as Tokyo itself. 
            Back on September 2, 1945, one of the worlds largest and most concentrated assembly of ships and airplanes was staged in and near Tokyo Bay, with the participation of nearly 300 large and small ships, and a flight of some 1,200 planes.  This is the radio story associated with this majestic display of technical might and grandeur.
            In order to provide widespread news coverage of the international events in Tokyo Bay, several different shortwave radio circuits were established.  This procedure ensured a flow of electronic news from the ships to the nearby shore, then across the Pacific in various hops, to California in the United States.
            The official signing ceremony, that ended the hostilities in the Pacific and Asia and ushered in a new era of peace, took place on the open deck of the American navy vessel USS Missouri, callsign NCBL.  At the time, the  Missouri was at anchor in Tokyo Bay, flanked by numerous other seagoing vessels, and with the shore in sight on both sides.
            At 8:00 am on this auspicious day, Sunday September 2, 1945, military and political dignitaries from Japan, the United States, and several other Pacific and European countries began to arrive by boat.  An American destroyer conveyed many of these dignitaries from Yokohama to the side of the Missouri.
            The official ceremony began with prayer, followed by the National Anthem, and a speech by General Douglas MacArthur.  After the signing of the peace document, an enormous flight of planes numbering 1200 flew over the area. 
            President Harry Truman in the White House also made a speech by radio that was spliced into the official program.  This entire international event began soon after 9:00 am Japan time, and it lasted a little less than half an hour.
            It is generally presumed that the events aboard the Missouri were broadcast live throughout the world, but this was not the case.  In order for the multitudes of news media personnel to process the news adequately, with still pictures and newsreel pictures, newspaper items and radio items, all that were sent by radio, there was a planned delay of 1½ hours.
            On the shortwave scene, several different relay routes were established, from navy vessels in Tokyo Bay, to the nearby shore and onwards to Guam and Okinawa and Honolulu and to the American mainland in California.  Two different electronic recordings were made, and the information upon these was transmitted via different radio routes.
            Original planning for the ceremony in Tokyo Bay suggested the usage of the American navy vessel USS Iowa NEPM-KU1M, though ultimately the Missouri was chosen.  Radio facilities aboard the American communication ship, the USS Ancon NTVP was the primary mode for shortwave coverage, though the Iowa was ready for possible usage if needed.  In addition, more than 100 media personnel from the services were observing the events on board the nearby Missouri.
            Additional back up transmitters if needed were also available for the relay of the special programming aboard two other navy vessels, the USS New Jersey NEPP and the USS Catoctin NKUA. 
            On shore, the four shortwave transmitters at 50 kW each at Nazaki as used by Radio Tokyo were available; as was also the navy shortwave station on Guam NPN-KU5Q, with two transmitters at 10 kW & 3 kW.  In addition, the navy radio station at Okinawa, perhaps the USS El Dorado at anchorage nearby was also available, and like wise, navy and commercial relay stations were available in Honolulu if needed.
            In advance, test broadcasts between Asia and the United States were made in order to ascertain the most suitable relay routing on the day of the broadcast.  A total of 17 shortwave channels were established to ensure adequate redundancy in case of variable weather and propagation conditions.
            Earlier on the day of the ceremony, the go ahead cue was broadcast on 18020 kHz from KQJ, a shortwave transmitter at RCA Bolinas in California.  This signal was received at KU5Q on Guam and retransmitted on 17820 kHz and this was picked up at multiple locations in the Tokyo area.
            On board the Missouri, a varied assortment of electronic equipment was hurriedly assembled and placed on tables under a shelter just behind the main signing desk on the day of ceremony, Sunday September 2, 1945 (in Japan).  Much of this equipment, already showing signs of wear and tropical deterioration, had been flown in from the Philippines.
            Initially the main amplifier malfunctioned though it was quickly repaired.  Recordings of all of the procedures in the ceremony were made on two different recording machines: one of the new fangled and cantankerous wire recorders for use on the Ancon, and an acetate disc for broadcast by Radio Tokyo.  This acetate disc was taken by destroyer back to Yokohama, and then by an unofficially commandeered Jeep to the studios of Radio Tokyo, now under American control.
            Although several different radio circuits were available for the relay of the programing from Asia to the United States, yet the one that was chosen for broadcasts on the mediumwave networks in the United States and on the Voice of America was as follows:-

* Wire recording of ceremony on USS Missouri; no suitable transmission facilities on the Missouri
* Small motor boat took the recording to the USS Ancon nearby in Tokyo Bay
* Shortwave radio from Ancon NTVP to Radio Tokyo receiver station
* Shortwave radio from 50 kW JLT3 at Nazaki on 15225 kHz to KU5Q receiver station on Guam
* Shortwave radio from KU5Q Guam on 13360 kHz to RCA Point Reyes receiver station in California
* Nationwide distribution for radio broadcast, mediumwave networks in USA and Voice of America

            These events all happened in the middle of last century, just 70 years ago, on September 2, 1945.

World War II Began With a Radio Broadcast

During the mid 1930's, political events on continental Europe began to focus on expansionism, until ultimately in 1939, it became very evident that a major war was on the horizon.  Historians tell us that World War 2 began over the first weekend in September (1939) when massive German air and land forces crossed the border into neighboring Poland on several fronts.
            A radio station on the edge of the city of Gleiwitz (German) or Gliwice (Polish) featured in the events leading up to the invasion, and this is the story of what happened.
            The city of Gleiwitz was first mentioned as a town in the year 1276, and at the time it was ruled by Silesian dukes.  Over the years, it was sometimes part of a neighboring dukedom, and there were times when it was an independent entity in its own rights.
            In the 1300s, Gleiwitz became a possession of the Kingdom of Bohemia, and two hundred years later it was absorbed into the Austrian Hapsburg Empire.  Subsequently, the city was absorbed into the Prussian province of Silesia, and in the late 1800s during the unification of Germany, Gleiwitz was recognized with the status of a Stadtkreis, a city with its own urban district.
            During the development of the industrial era in continental Europe, Gleiwitz became a center for heavy industries and mining.  At the time, there was strife between the German and Polish inhabitants, and under a plebiscite administered by the League of Nations, a vote of nearly 80% ensured that the city would remain as an integral part of Germany.  However, after the end of World War 2, the city of Gleiwitz was mandated to Poland; and this prosperous and modern city of two million citizens remains Polish to this day. 
            Along with many other countries throughout the world, the radio revolution of the 1920s was evident in Germany, and their first radio station in Gleiwitz was inaugurated on November 15, 1925.   At the time, this small station served as a relay transmitter for the programming from the Silesian radio station (callsign GPU) located in the neighboring city of Breslau.
            This original radio station in Gleiwitz was located on Raudener Strasse in suburban Petersdorf and it radiated with 1½ kW on the medium wavelength 251 meters (1195 kHz).  The aerial system was a center fed T antenna, mounted on two steel towers standing at 245 feet high.  In 1928, the power of the station was increased to 5 kW and the frequency was adjusted to the nearby channel 1184 kHz.
            Work commenced in August 1934 on a new station on a nearby country property amidst a pine tree forest on Tarnowitz Road, on the edge of Gleiwitz city.  At the time, this location was still inside Germany some four miles from the border with Poland. 
            Several new buildings were constructed, including a new three storey transmitter building, together with a new high self standing tower; and new electronic equipment that was manufactured by the Lorenz, Siemens and Telefunken companies was installed. 
            The new tower, standing at 365 feet high, was constructed entirely of Larch timber, a tree that is related to the pine tree with a very durable quality.   The timbers in the high tower were fastened with more than 16,000 brass bolts.  This new radio broadcasting station was inaugurated just before Christmas in the year 1935, on December 23, still with 5 kW on another new though nearby channel, 1231 kHz.  
            Close on four years later, the Gleiwitz radio station was suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into an ignominious prominence as a pretext for the launching of a massive invasion of nearby Poland.  The Gleiwitz incident was one of twenty-one provocative border incidents that occurred on that same evening, and they were intended to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany in order to justify the subsequent invasion of Poland.
            As revealed in the best available documents, this is what happened.  Shortly before 8:00 pm on the night of August 31, 1939, two cars drove through the entrance gateway to the station and stopped outside the entrance to the transmitter building.  The small contingent of German troops in these two cars, six men with 26 year old Major Alfred Naujocks as their unit leader, were all clothed in Polish army uniforms. 
            The soldiers stormed the radio station building and quickly overpowered the two security guards at the entrance doorway and the three radio engineers on duty.  Major Naujocks fired a few shots into the air to intimidate the radio personnel, and all, except Engineer Nawroth, were led to the basement with their hands tied.
            The Gleiwitz radio broadcasting station was a slave relay station, carrying the programming from the mother station in Breslau, and at the time of the incident, a music program was on the air.   There was no production studio here in Gleiwitz, and a microphone was inserted into the transmitter circuitry only for the broadcast of local weather and for occasions of emergency, if needed.
            Engineer Nawroth was ordered to connect the microphone.  It is stated that they were unable to use the main transmitter and that they used a second transmitter.  This seems to be an non-technical way of describing the use of the inserted microphone; there is no way that a standby transmitter back then could be spliced into service so quickly.
            One of the German soldiers, Karl Hornack, grabbed the microphone and attempted to make a clandestine broadcast in Polish.  The broadcast lasted no more than part of a sentence before they were cut off the air by Engineer Nawroth who surreptitiously pushed a button, effectively putting the station off the air.
            A multitude of local citizens heard the botched broadcast, but apparently it made little impact upon them.  During an interview just last year, 85 year old Joachim Fulczyk in Gliwice recalled that he, his mother and her sister heard the broadcast and they were puzzled as to what was happening.   
            On the previous day, an unmarried 43 year old Catholic farmer was arrested on suspicion of partisan sympathy with the Poles.  This man, Franciszek Honiok, was brought by car from a local encampment to a pre-arranged location near the station.   He had been injected with a lethal drug and was unconscious. 
            Honiok was shot and killed and dragged into the doorway of the station.  There are reports that other unconscious or dead people were brought in and shot and laid at strategic locations to indicate supposed evidence of a Polish attack.
            This raid on the radio station at Gleiwitz was a sufficient pretext for a massive onslaught into Poland; and so that radio broadcast was the beginning of World War 2. 

And so, what happened to them all afterwards?
            Due to the realignment of international borders after the war, Gleiwitz and the surrounding areas of Silesia became part of Poland, and the city adopted the Polish name Gliwice.
            The radio station survived the war without damage.  On October 3, 1949 the frequency at Radio Gliwice was changed to 737 kHz, and then on March 15, 1950, the transmitter was re-tuned to 1079 kHz.  At this stage, it was in use only as an emergency backup transmitter for the mediumwave station at Ruda Slaska. 
            In 1955, this medium wave station at Gliwice was withdrawn from service, and the facility was used for jamming Polish programming from Radio Free Europe.  These days, the tower is in use for the transmission of 50 or more mobile phone systems, and a low power FM station.  The transmitter building was turned onto a museum in 2005, and the tower is now a tourist attraction.  It is the tallest wooden tower in the world, and the only wooden tower that is still in use for radio transmissions.
            The Polish partisan Franciszek Honiok was killed at the radio station and he was buried in an unmarked grave, the location of which is forever unknown.  He is listed officially as the first casualty of World War II.
            Major Alfred Naujocks survived the war and he became a businessman in Hamburg Germany; he died in 1966.
            We would presume that Engineer Nawroth who put the station off the air during the surreptitious broadcast, continued in service at the station.
            Nothing more is known about the German army man who spoke both German and Polish, Karl Hornack; he was the temporary announcer who made the short broadcast over Radio Gleiwitz.
            Last year, (2014) 75th anniversary celebrations of the Gleiwitz Incident were conducted at the radio station, with representatives attending from both Germany and Poland. 

            And thats the end of the story: the radio broadcast that began World War II.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 August - 06 September 2015

Solar activity was at very low to low levels over the period. An isolated C2 flare was observed at 31/0522 UTC from Region 2403 (S15, L=193, class/area Fki/1190 on 25 Aug) and a C1 flare occurred at
03/1137 UTC from Region 2407 (N16, L=145, class/area Cso/050 on 01 Sep). No further notable flaring occurred during the period. On 04 September, an approximate 15 degree filament eruption, centered near S17E10, was observed lifting off in SDO/AIA 304 imagery between 04/1709-1854 UTC. A partial-halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 04/1948 UTC with most of the ejecta directed off the SE limb. WSA/ENLIL analysis of the CME determined that an Earth-directed component was not likely. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels from 31 August through 02 September and again from 05-06 September reaching a maximum flux value over the period of 3,188 pfu at 05/1840 UTC. Moderate levels occurred on 03-04 September. 

Geomagnetic field activity began the period at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind regime. At 02/1522 UTC, a solar sector boundary crossing was observed in ACE solar wind data accompanied by a  islow increase in solar wind speed. By late on 03 September, total field increased to around 12-14 nT with the Bz component deflecting southward to -10 nT. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on
02-03 September. By 04 September, solar wind increased to around 450-550 km/s range as a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) followed by a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH
HSS) became geoeffective. Solar wind speeds remained in the 400-500 km/s range through the rest of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with active to minor storm (G1-Minor) levels through
midday on 04 September followed by quiet to active levels on 05-06 September. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 September - 03 October 2015

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with M-class flares (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) likely from 11-24 September with the return of old Region 2403 (S15, L=192). 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels likely from 13-18 September, 20-21 September, 26-28 September and again
from 02-03 October due to CH HSS effects. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled levels from 07-08, 11-16, 18-20, 24-25, and 30 September-03 October. Active periods are expected on 07, 12, 19, 24 September-03 October with
minor storm periods (G1-Minor) possible on 19 September and 01 October, all due to recurrent CH HSS effects.
