Hi everyone. We hope your shortwave listening experiences have gone well with the current elevated solar activity. We have seen signals do some interesting things over the past year or so.

Now that the B24 HFCC conference is over, we can let you know what our DRM broadcast schedule will be. We had to delete one broadcast to China and split the South Asia broadcast blocks.

The broadcast to Japan will continue its experiment with the 25-m band. We may change this back to 31 meters at mid-season if the data indicates the need to do so. Finding a frequency free of digital interference has been a challenge.

Another experiment will be using two different antennas for the 15390 kHz broadcasts. The Sunday broadcast will be beamed mostly toward central India while the Saturday broadcast will continue the southern India heading. Please let us know the differences in performance that you notice.

KTWR DRM schedule update

KTWR DRM A24 - Updated - Both India blocks are on 15390 kHz.

We have good news for you. KTWR is maintaining the current amount of time for DRM broadcasts for the A24 broadcast season. The only timing change is that the two Sunday blocks will have no gap between them. The South Indian language broadcasts will start 15 minutes earlier than they do in the B23

season. The end time will also be earlier.

We are grateful for your reception reports. The posts on WhatsApp have been quite helpful. It will be interesting to see how 19 meters performs in India. We have seen some intermittent multipath issues with 22 meters in parts of India.

This Shortwave Station’s Transmitter Site Sits Pretty in the Tropics

If you’re an avid Radio World reader, you know that we love to highlight unique radio facilities, whether they be local or abroad. If you happen to love that sort of content, you’re in luck!

Broadcasting since 1954, Trans World Radio, or TWR, is a Christian radio distributor that collaborates with U.S.-based radio stations to spread the gospel via local FMs, mediumwave or high-powered AMs, and shortwave transmitters.

According to its website, TWR’s programming is broadcast in 200-plus languages on air, online and on the ground in 190 countries. It is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month.

With such an extensive résumé, TWR was bound to have at least a few unique transmitter sites. One such site that we’ll share with you here can be found “Where America’s Day Begins,” floating just above the equator in the western Pacific Ocean.

In Micronesia, TWR’s shortwave member station on Guam, KTWR, serves listeners across most of Asia, spanning Siberia to India to Indonesia.

The KTWR site has three transmitters, one 100 kW HC100 and two 250 kW TSW2250Ds. The six TCI curtain antennas (one 2x2x1.5, one 2x3x.5 and four 4x4x1) were installed during various years from 1977 to 1998. Radio World is told that TWR installed the antennas and transmitters with its own personnel and volunteers.

Restoration of four of five antennas has the majority of broadcasts directly from Guam. The latest schedule of KTWR received from the station and noted the temporary broadcast from Madagascar, UAE, Uzbekistan have ceased.

Broadcasting Again After a Natural Disaster

After Super Typhoon Mawar slammed into Guam on May 24, listeners in far-flung countries who count on KTWR to bring them spiritually nourishing broadcasts found that their radios went silent.

Winds of at least 108 mph swept over the TWR shortwave station’s radio towers, damaging all five curtain antennas, two of them severely. Not knowing how long it would be before KTWR broadcasts would again reach those uncountable listeners across Asia, ministry staff hastened to contract with other outlets to temporarily carry some of the programmings. Other team members buckled down to repairs.

Amazingly, through the blessings of the Lord and the hard work of our skilled staff on Guam, a healthy portion of KTWR’s regular program schedule is already back on the air. One rough estimate indicated that a third or more of the station’s gospel broadcasts are going out again, including to countries of special concern such as North Korea and China.

TWR Vice President for Asia Daryl Renshaw said he is thankful both for the resumption of some of the broadcast ministry to North Korea and for TWR supporters who make the outreach possible.

KTWR updates their DRM schedule

 

From KTWR Guam:

We ran into some unexpected interference with our 11860kHz DRM broadcast at 1358-1428UTC. As of this Friday, 10 December, we will move it to 11890kHz. We hope this will greatly improve the SNR in central India.

One final DRM Test from KTWR before winter schedules

Hi Everyone,

While we are very close to the B21 broadcast season, we have one more DRM test to try this season. We want to verify that we can broadcast dual language services with our automated playout system. (Years ago, we proved that we could broadcast dual language services with a more manual approach.)

On 30 October, the English block to China at 1100-1130UTC will be replaced with Mandarin and Cantonese. The English part of our Japanese broadcast at 1200-1230UTC will be replaced with Japanese and Korean. This test will be only for one day. Speech audio will be computer-generated, so it may or may not sound slightly unnatural. Feel free to let us know how the audio quality turned out.

Running dual languages requires KTWR to use MSC=64QAM instead of our normal 16QAM. This will require a better SNR to decode than what is currently required. Current solar conditions appear to be

KTWR begins DRM in English on August 5

Hi Everyone,
KTWR is about to start regular DRM broadcasts to four different areas. We will do one day per week to each of four areas starting 05 August 2019. We will be working with the content server parameters to come up with the best compromise settings for each area. Each week will have different settings. We would really appreciate your feedback for as many weeks as possible. Your assistance will ultimately help give your fellow listeners the best possible reception in the long run. For now, all programs will be in English.

Return to the Shortwave Scene on Guam - Trans World Radio KTWR

The Australian monthly magazine Radio & Hobbies for October 1975 gives us the first notification that Trans World Radio TWR was planning to establish a twin broadcasting facility on the island of Guam.  The highly honored international radio monitor in New Zealand, the late Arthur Cushen, stated in his monthly column, Listening Around the World, that TWR had already received a license for this new station which would operate with 10 kW on 770 kHz mediumwave and with two shortwave transmitters at 100 kW for coverage into Asia. 

            At the time, Trans World Radio was in an era of expansive growth, and Arthur Cushen went on to state that this new Guam station would be their fifth radio broadcasting facility, after Monte Carlo in Europe, Bonaire in the Caribbean, Cyprus in the Mediterranean, and Swaziland in Africa.  At this stage, TWR had already established an office facility in Agana and they planned that their first unit in Guam would be their new mediumwave station.   

            Their new shortwave station was constructed near the town of Merizo right towards the southern end of the island of Guam.  The actual location is just a little inland from Bile Bay on the west coast, a                       Two years later, in June 1977, the new KTWR shortwave station was ready to go on the air with test transmissions, and at this stage the programming consisted entirely of test tones and test announcements.  Trans World Radio issued a special QSL card acknowledging these initial transmitter tests.

            Regular program broadcasting began three months later on September 4 (1977), and by then, two 100 kW Harris transmitters Model SW100 were in use, with two TCI wide band curtain antennas.  Transmitter KTWR1 was hard wired to Antenna 1 at 285˚, and KTWR2 was hard wired to Antenna 2 at 315˚.

            Three years later (1980), Trans World Radio received FCC approval for the installation of two more shortwave transmitters at 100 kW, the same Model Harris SW100.  At the same time, the transmitter building was enlarged to accommodate the two additional units, and three new curtain antennas were also installed.  Test broadcasts from the two new transmitters and antennas took place during the following year (1981).

            In April 1999, a fifth transmitter and a sixth curtain antenna were installed; however, the 100 kW transmitter on this occasion was manufactured by the HCJB facility located at Elkhart in Indiana.   Then give two more years (2001) and the two early curtain antennas were replaced by two similar units with reflectors.

            However at this stage, two of the early 100 kW transmitters were removed and replaced by two higher powered units rated at 250 kW each with digital DRM capability.  During the installation of the new high powered transmitters, there was a rearrangement of transmitter locations within the building, and the earlier KTWR3 was removed for sale.   

            Friday November 11, 2011 was an auspicious day for Trans World Radio KTWR down near the town of Merizo on the island of Guam.  On that date, a special dedication ceremony honored the installation of the ultra-modern new equipment, and a special quarter hour program in the digital DRM mode marked the occasion. 

            This special shortwave broadcast in the digital mode was broadcast at 0900 UTC on 17640 kHz.  The entire dedication ceremony was broadcast live from KTWR, and in addition, this special event programming was relayed throughout the United States via the several hundred FM and mediumwave stations in the nationwide Moody Bible Radio Network.    

            In recent time KTWR has been involved in two interesting and significant radio experiments, in addition to the transmission of shortwave programming in the digital mode.  During the past three years, Trans World Radio has been installing three huge solar arrays for the generation of electricity at the rate of 60 kW hours per day from each array.  When totally completed, this cost saving equipment will save the station around $50,000 for electricity each year.  Then, just last month by special arrangement, one of the 250 kW transmitters at shortwave KTWR beamed an experimental digital internet signal to Thailand that allowed the download of a complete Bible on a smart phone.

            Trans World Radio KTWR on Guam has always been a reliable verifier of listener reception reports from their office in Agana, and more recently directly from the station at its Merizo address.  Over the past nearly forty years, KTWR has issued a host of colorful QSL cards, in English and at times also in Japanese.  These QSL cards often depict delightful island scenes in full color.
