BBC World Service and the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

 

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, is scheduled to broadcast on BBC World Service. It is based around nine Bible readings, which tell the story of the loving purposes of God. They are interspersed with carols old and new, sung by the world-famous Choir of King’s College Cambridge, which also leads the

the congregation in traditional Christmas hymns. 

It will be broadcast (as every year) on Christmas Eve, 24 December, from 1500-1630UTC, on the following scheduled frequencies:

1500-1600: 9410-sla, 12025-sng

1600-1630: 7445-mdc, 12065-sng, 17640-asc, 17830-asc, 21630-asc

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 12 - 18 December 2022

Solar activity reached high levels on 14-16 Dec, and low levels were observed on 12-13 and 18 Dec. Region 3165 (S19, L=279, class/area=Ekc/340 on 15 Dec) produced the bulk of this period's M-flare activity. In total 29 M-class flares were observed during this period, of which two exceeded R2 (Moderate) levels (an M6/2b flare at 14/1442 UTC and an M5 flare at 15/2240 UTC). No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during this period. 

No proton events were observed in geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled on 12-13 Dec, and quiet on 14-18 Dec. K-index calculations were unavailable due to an outage on 16-17 Dec. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 19 December - 14 January 2023

Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) events and a slight chance for R3 or greater events throughout the forecast period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 22-24 Dec, and 26 Dec-02 Jan. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 19-21, 25 Dec, and 03-14 Jan. 

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 21, 25-28 Dec, and 03 Jan due to CH HSS influences. Active levels are likely on 19-20, 22, 29, 31 Dec. Quiet and quiet to unsettled levels are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of

the forecast period.

I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.

Our transmission last Tuesday at 1530 UTC on 9955 kHz was not on the air due to some issue at WRMI. I am hearing WRMI now (2255 UTC) on 9955, so whatever the problem was, it's resolved now.

Our newest transmission from WRMI is tonight/tomorrow morning at 0530-0600 UTC on 7780 kHz. The signal was not great last week anywhere in the world, but let's see what happens this time. The 7780 might reach Europe, although reception is more likely in the Americas.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 282)  is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

“Termination of Slovak Radio’s medium wave broadcasting"

On 31 December 2022, Radio and Television of Slovakia will end the operation of medium-wave radio transmitters:

– NE Košice in the ?ižatice location on a frequency of 702 kHz

– NE Nitra in the Jarok location on the frequency 1098 kHz

Both transmitters were used to broadcast the national broadcast of  Radio Patria between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the evening. In the night hours, it was supplemented by the broadcasting of the RTVS  Rádio Devín program service.

Medium-wave radio broadcasting accompanied its listeners for a long time – from 1926 to the present day.

Medium wave broadcasting was gradually replaced by FM broadcasting in the VHF band and listeners on medium waves gradually decreased.

Solar Activity Intensifies

After months of relative calm, the sun burst back into life yesterday with a remarkable series of M-class solar flares. The fusillade ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere and caused a rolling global shortwave radio blackout.  

If current trends continue, an X-flare may be in the offing, with at least one dangerous sunspot directly facing Earth.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 - 11 December 2022

Solar activity was at low levels through the period. A total of 46 C-class flares were observed from Regions 3153 (S17, L=327, class/area Fko/1080 on 04 Dec ), 3155 (N23, L=026, class/area Dai/140 on 04 Dec), 3156 (N25, L=319, class/area Dao/220 on 03 Dec), 3157 (N16, L=305, class/area Esi/230 on 10 Dec), 3158 (N24, L=354, class/area Dai/110 on 05 Dec), 3161 (N26, L=312, class/area Bxo/020 on 09 Dec), 3162 (S13, L=239, class/area Hsx/070 on 10 Dec) and 3163 (S20, L=217, class/area Eso/140 on 11 Dec). During the period, numrous CMEs were observed, but none were detected to have Earth-directed components. 

No proton events were observed in geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 05-07 Dec with a peak flux reading of 2,610 pfu observed at 05/1450 UTC. Moderate levels were observed on 08-11 Dec. Geomagnetic field activity generally ranged from quiet to unsettled

levels throughout the period. Isolated active levels were observed on 07-09 Dec with an isolated minor storm (G1-Minor) reading at midday on 07 Dec. Positive polarity CH HSS influences were present on 05 Dec and negative polarity CH HSS influences were present on

07-10 Dec. Wind speeds reached a maximum reading of about 610 km/s late on 08 Dec. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 12 December - 07 January 2023

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the outlook period. M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares are possible on 11-31 Dec due to current and returning M-class producing regions. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 24-31 Dec and 01-03 Jan due to CH HSS influence. Low to moderate levels are expected on 12-23 Dec and 04-07 Jan. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 19-20 Dec, 22-31 Dec, 01 Jan and 03-06 Jan. Minor storm (G1-Minor) levels are possible on 22 Dec and 25-28 Dec. This activity is all due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Radio Strömsö programming on December 11 and 17

 

FINLAND 

Finnish DX Association (SDXL) is producing an hour-long English-language radio show

called Radio Strömsö.

It will be broadcast via Texas Radio Shortwave from WRMI in Miami on:

Sunday, 11 December on 5950 kHz at 0200 UTC and 15770 kHz at 1200 UTC.

Another transmission will be heard from Channel 292 in Rohrbach, Germany, on:

Saturday, 17 December 1800 UTC on 3955 kHz.

The program will be repeated via Scandinavian Weekend Radio on 4 February 2023.

The show, edited by Heppu Hyypiö and Tricky Trev from Scandinavian Weekend Radio, will

include interviews with SDXL members, information about Finland, pieces of Finnish radio and DX

history, and also Finnish music.

Radio Taiwan International announces technical programs at Bulgarian relay site
