The July19 (July 18 in the Americas on WBCQ) edition of From the Isle of Music includes more of María Felicia Pérez, Director of Coro Exaudi, winner of the Choral Music category in Cubadisco 2016, and our very special guest is El Noro, winner of the Popular Dance Music - New Artists category in Cubadisco 2016. We'll be playing some of the album Sin Escala by his group El Noro y Primera Clase and conversing with him about the album and the group. We will also have some Reyes 73 from the 1970s.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 11 - 17 July 2016
Solar activity was at very low levels from 11-14 July with only a few simple sunspot regions. Region 2565 (N05, L=175, class/area ko/350 on 17 Jul) rotated onto the east limb on 11 July as a simple
Hsx spot class with a simple alpha magnetic class. By late on 14 July, another spot group began to emerge behind Region 2565 and was numbered 2567 (N05, L=165, class/area Dhi/330 on 17 Jul). Region 2567 quickly grew to over 300 millionths in area and was initially classified as a beta-gamma-delta magnetic group before some magnetic simplification occurred on 16 July. The region was downgraded to a beta-gamma magnetic class for the remainder of the period. Region 2567 became the most active region during 15-17 July producing 13 C-class flares. However, the close proximity of the two regions, as well as an active inversion line between the two, resulted in
several flares to be attributed to Region 2565 on 17 July. The first was a long duration C1/Sf flare at 17/0803 UTC which was responsible for two CMEs observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 17/1124 UTC and 17/1248 UTC. The first was a faint asymmetric halo CME while
the second was directed mostly off the east limb. Initial WSA-Enlil model output of the events showed a slow transit with effects possible on 21 July. The largest flare of the period, however, was a
C6 at 17/2335 UTC which also occurred on the inversion line and was subsequently attributed to Region 2565.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels throughout the period with a maximum flux of 5,512 pfu observed at 17/1630 UTC.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels. The majority of the period was under the influence of high speed solar wind streams from a large, positive polarity, polar
connected coronal hole as well as an isolated, positive polarity coronal hole. Solar wind speeds reached highs around 550 km/s early on 11 July, 650 km/s late on 12 July, and 700 km/s early on 15 July before finally decreasing to around 440 km/s by the end of the period. Total field during the period only managed to reach a maximum of 9 nT at 12/0552 UTC. Prolonged periods of southward Bz reaching -8 nT on 12 July and -6 nT on 14 July resulted in periods of G1 (Minor) storm levels on 12 July and active periods on 14 July. The rest of the period was at quiet to unsettled levels with quiet
conditions observed on 17 July.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 July - 13 August 2016
Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares from 18-24 July as Regions 2565 and 2567 transit across the visible disk. Very low levels are
expected for 25 Juy-04 August. A return to low levels with a chance for M-class flaring is expected for 05-13 August with the return of Regions 2565 and 2567.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 18-19, 23-27 July, and again on 5-13 August due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal to moderate
levels are expected for the remaining forecast period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 19-20, 22-24, 28, 30 July and on 03-08, 10-11 August with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 03-04 and 08 August due to
recurrent CH HSS activity. A CME associated with the 17 July long-duration C1 flare is likely to arrive early on 21 July causing unsettled to active levels.

LATE BREAKING .... Coup in Turkey
Turkish Coup Attempt Under Way as Erdogan Vows to Stay in Power
Turkish army officers said they seized power in the country as warplanes flew over the capital and tanks blocked roads in Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, by video link to a local TV station, said he’s still in charge and urged the public to take to the streets and public squares in resistance.

VOA Radiogram Weekend Schedule
Have your white laboratory coats ready, because VOA Radiogram will be very experimental this weekend.
Battle of the 55-wpm modes. VOA Radiogram listener and contributor Mark Hirst in the UK suggests an experiment with the BPSK63F mode. His interest was generated by an article in the August QST magazine about the "flavors of PSK." It noted that BPSK63F, with its forward error correction, has a "remarkable ability to be decoded under poor conditions."
During the early editions of VOA Radiogram, we did transmit BPSK63F a few times. This weekend, we'll do it again, in comparison with two other modes that also have speeds of about 55 words per minute: MFSK16 and Olivia 8-1000. The RSID for each mode will be followed by a 15-second tuning signal, in case you must manually change modes. More details below in the lineup.
The return of Flmsg. This weekend's program will include on item in Flmsg format. Flmsg is an add-on to Fldigi that allows the transmission and reception of message forms and formatted html documents.

The First Long Distance Wireless Message Across Water in the Southern Hemisphere
Exactly 110 years ago, the first long distance wireless
message across water in the Southern Hemisphere was successfully and
dramatically achieved with a public demonstration connecting continental
Australia with its island state, Tasmania.
The date was July 12, 1906, and the event occurred between Queenscliff
in Victoria and Devonport in Tasmania, a distance of a little more than 200
miles.

Queenscliff is located
on the Bellarine Peninsula in southern Victoria, drectly opposite to the island
of Tasmania across Bass Strait. The area
was originally inhabited by Aborigines belonging to the
Wauthorong Tribe. The first European settler was an escaped
English convict named
William Buckley who lived in a cave with the local Aborigines between the years
1803 and 1835.
Under
the European migrants during the early colonial era, Queenscliff became a fishing village, though soon
afterwards it emerged as an important cargo port, servicing steamships trading
in Port Philip Bay and the city of Melbourne.
These days though, Queenscliff is simply a small seaside town of about
1500 residents with a commercial centre of historic shop fronts and buildings
on Hesse Street. They also sport a
tourist attraction made up of ten miles of restored railway track with a
collection of heritage railway carriages from around Australia.
Interestingly,
Queenscliff has featured in not one, but two, very early wireless experiments
way back more than 100 years ago. This
small seaside town was the location for a very early experimental wireless
station that gave a message of welcome to a visiting royal family aboard a Royal
Navy vessel, and it was the location for the first wireless communication
between the Australian mainland and islandic Tasmania.
In
April 1901, Mr. Henry Walter Jenvey, Chief Electrical Engineer with the PMG
Department in the newly confederated state of Victoria, conducted a series of
test transmissions between two suburban locations in the city of
Melbourne. Mr. Jenvey designed and
constructed his own wireless equipment for transmission and reception, and these
units were installed at Red Bluff St. Kilda and Point Cook, a distance of 20
miles across the waters of Port Phillip Bay.
According to newspaper reports in Australia and New Zealand at the time,
these preliminary wireless transmission tests were successful.
Comes the next month, (May 1901) and Jenvey
set up his wireless equipment near the Black Lighthouse at Queenscliff on the
western side of the entrance to Port
Phillip Bay. There was no wind to fly a
kite, so initially, the antenna wire was attached to a balloon. However that was not successful either, so
the antenna wire was then attached to a nearby flagpole.
Thus
it was that communication was made in Morse Code with the two royal escort
ships, HMS St. George and HMS Juno, on Sunday May 5, 1901. Jenvey sent a message of welcome to the
incoming visitors from His Excellency John
Adrian Louis Hope, the newly appointed Governor-General of Australia.
This
message of greeting was sent in Morse Code to the wireless operators on board
the two escort vessels, St. George and Juno some 17 miles distant. According to newspaper reports at the time,
this message was then telegraphed by semaphore flags to the royal family aboard
the Royal Yacht HMS Ophir. As the Duke
and Duchess of York, the royal couple visited Australia to participate in
ceremonies to honor the federation of the separated colonies into the
Commonwealth of Australia. Nine years
later, this royal couple became King George 5 and Queen Mary, at the death of
the previous king, Edward 7.
The
second occasion when Queenscliff participated in a historic wireless event took
place five years later. On that second
occasion, the Marconi Company in England sent its personnel to establish two
wireless stations, one at the now historic Queenscliff and the other at East
Devonport in northern Tasmania. The PMG
Dept issued a special license for these two temporary demonstration
stations.
The
twin temporary stations were constructed at a cost of £5,000 each, and each had three small
buildings. There was a small one roomed corrugated iron cabin at
each location, within which the Marconi wireless equipment was installed. Another smaller building housed a 2 kW power
generator, and a third contained ancilliary equipment. The antenna was strung between two masts 162
feet high and 210 feet apart.
A
special train carried many government officials from Melbourne to Queenscliff
for this grand occasion, including the current Governor-General, the Right Honorable
Henry Stafford Northcote. In addition,
other local and national dignitaries came in by boat and ferry.
Among
the many participants in the official programming at Queenscliff were 200
school children who served as a mass choir; and some 300 official guests were
provided with a special luncheon. Over
the other side of Bass Strait at East Devonport, 2,000 people witnessed this
historic wireless event, and they participated in the official ceremonies of
the day with as much gusto as was demonstrated at Queenscliff in Victoria.
Several
official messages were transmitted in Morse Code from the Queenscliff station
to the Devonport station and these were written down and then conveyed by
bicycle and ferry to the local post office for landline transmission to the
state capital Hobart. The Tasmanian
governor, Sir Gerald Strickland responded with felicitous greetings to the
large and dignified group gathered at Queenscliff.
At
the end of the grandeur and fanfare of the day, the crowds disappeared and
returned to their homes, satisfied with the important historicity of this major
wireless event, the first
long distance wireless message across water in the Southern
Hemisphere. However, the two new
wireless stations remaijned in service, carrying government and commercial
communications between the island state of Tasmania and the Australian continental
mainland.
The
Marconi company endeavored to sell the two stations to the Commonwealth
government, but without success. This
reluctance on the part of the federal government was due mainly to fears about
the growing worldwide monopoly that the Marconi company was demonstrating. However, after three months of continued
service, the two stations were closed and the equipment was removed.
The
temporary wireless station at Queenscliff in Victoria was located on the
Cricket Ground between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, and today there is a
stone cairn, a monument, honoring this historic wireless station. The monument is located on the inland edge of
the Cricket Ground.
The
Tasmanian counterpart in honoring the Marconi station at East Devonport is not
a stone monument installed at the actual site on the northeastern side of the
Mersey River Estuary at Bass Strait.
Instead, commemorative radio events have been staged at the Devonport
Maritime Museum, which is located across the river, on the northwestern side of
the Mersey Estuary at Bass Strait.

Night of Nights CW stations to air July 12
The annual “Night of Nights” event, in which historic maritime CW stations such as KPH and WLO return from the dead for a few hours and transmit Morse code messages, will begin at 0001 UTC July 13. (Of course, that’s the evening of July 12 for American listeners).

Historical Society, it will also feature Coast Guard stations such as NMC, as well as amateur radio stations
K6KPH and W4WLO making CW contacts with
fellow hams. Plus,

No Earth-directed CMEs were observed. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels from 04-08 Jul and reached high levels on 09-10 Jul following several days of enhanced solar wind speeds with a sequence of coronal holes.
Geomagnetic field activity was mostly quiet from 04-06 Jul with a few isolated unsettled periods under a nominal solar wind regime, unsettled to minor storm conditions were observed on 07-08 Jul due to positive polarity CH HSS effects followed by unsettled to active conditions on 09 Jul as effects began to subside. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 10 Jul as CH HSS effects waned.

Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class flares and a slight chance for M-class flares through 24 Jul due to flare potential from Region 2564. Activity is expected to be very low for the remainder of the forecast period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 16-19 Jul, 22-27 Jul and 05-06 Aug following recurrent CH HSS events. Normal to moderate levels are expected otherwise. Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach minor storm levels on 11 Jul due to positive polarity CH HSS effects. Summer 2016 International Shortwave Broadcast Guide Still Available
As the last few weeks of summer wind down - there's still time to hear plenty on shortwave from the summer schedules. International Shortwave Broadcast Guide, and our frequency updates on this blog, bring you the latest and most current information.
Summer schedules will shift to winter frequencies on October 30, 2016 - which means there remains plenty to hear on shortwave.

Excellent, very reasonable guide to shortwave radio. As a long time shortwave listener, the listing of all shortwave stations by UTC time is very useful to me. I had previously a shortwave website that listed only English broadcasts rather than an all station listing with the language that will be broadcast. I would highly recommend this e book for all new shortwave listeners and those that interested in a very portable listing of all stations by UTC. I only hope that this will be updated twice a year for many more years.

Good Product by Radio Freq
Since Monitoring Times stopped publishing shortwave radio schedules, there has been a dearth of resources for radio-heads. This guide nicely fulfills gap. It is very comprehensive.

organized. Not much to choose from these days, it is nice someone is dedicated

Shortwave Broadcast Guide by Kindle Customer
Since Monitoring Times is no longer in publication, this guide is
required for the dedicated shortwave listener. There is information provided
that I have found nowhere else. It will be a welcome addition to any listener's
equipment. Gayle Van Horn has been publishing this research for many years and
the followers are numerous, from beginners to professionals. The author's work
is accurate, concise and thorough. If you have a shortwave radio, you need this
publication as much as a set of earphones. There is none better.
Very Good Source for Shortwave Stations Broadcast

I've got to admit up front
that I don't have a strong interest in this part of the hobby. HOWEVER, Gayle
Van Horn makes it easy to determine what one can hear on the short wave bands
during a particular time period (in GMT time sorted format). I also like the
internet reference available, so that one can listen to programs via the
internet even if its' not possible via the shortwave radio.

This e-book is complete and
accurate in presenting a low cost SW frequency guide and important must read
topics for the new or experienced user. I liked the easy reading format, and
understandable frequency guide. I will order the second edition next year.

When I turn on the shortwave
receiver and want to find out what's on and where to look, Van Horn's handy
frequency guide is a smart place to begin. The format is not unlike the one
Monitoring Times (R.I.P.) used each month. Presumably, updated ISBGs will be
published twice per year, but you can check for the updates on her blog,
(mt-shortwave.blogspot.com).
Good value by DrP
This is an excellent
well-written book that is very affordable when compared to encyclopedic guides,
e.g., the WRTH. Much the same information is included. The first part is a nice
introduction to SW listening pitched to the beginner. Included is an
informative section on purchasing a radio spanning low-end <$100 models up
through the most advanced transceivers. The bulk of the book contains a list of
world-wide SW broadcasters, organized by frequency band. This makes it ideal
for browsing one band at a time, but much less so if you want to search for
broadcasts from a particular country.
Shortwave Is Not Quite Dead by James Tedford (Bothell, WA
United States)
It was barely breathing as
of late, but there is still a lot you can hear on shortwave radio. You need
more than a little dedication, and a better-than-adequate radio to hear what
remains on the HF bands, but if you have those, you will be rewarded with a lot
of interesting audio programming. This book is a good guide to what is
currently available over the international airwaves.
