Radio Netherlands - Program Guide March 14-20

SATURDAY 14 March
*** The State We're In ***
How do we treat each other in hard economic times? We speak with an Icelandic mother and a Russian man who says that people are kinder and more grateful for what they have when they don't have much.

Is there a right to music? We meet an Afghan boy who risked execution by the Taleban just to listen to his favourite stars. Plus we meet Maestro Luis Szaran, Paraguay's foremost conductor who is bringing instruments, training and the classics to the barrios and countryside.

And many musicians would go to hell and back for the right to play. Few would stick electrodes in their head. But that's exactly what bluegrass banjo legend Eddie Adcock did to stop a hand tremor.

'Bifi' - by Hassnae Bouazza

Dutch-Moroccan writer Hassnae Bouazza has attracted attention with her frank portrayal of subjects considered taboo in the Arab world. But for Radio Books she has written a gentle story about a young girl who attracts the romantic attention of a rather undesirable neighbour. A chance meeting years later causes her to reconsider her careless dismissal of the man.
