Radio Netherlands - Program Guide March 28 - April 3

SATURDAY 28 March
*** The State We're In ***
US President Obama has said he's considering negotiating with 'moderate' elements of the Taliban. But Afghan parliamentarian Fawzia Koofi tells us that giving the Taliban any kind of power would be a disaster for women's rights.

We look at the right to learn and speak with teachers in Zimbabwe who are regularly beaten by government thugs on suspicion of having voted for the opposition. And we report from Beijing were school discipline can be so strict that not only students get beaten, sometimes the parents do too.

And do animals have rights? We let two thinkers on rights of our four footed friends and food duke it out on the air.

*** Global Perspectives (primary programme) ***

Radio Books takes a break as we present our annual documentary exchange series featuring eight national and international broadcasters giving their perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is 'Islands'.

'A Prison within a Prison'
When one thinks of prison islands many names spring to mind - Devil's Island, Robben Island, Alcatraz Island, to name a few. Gaza may not be an island or a prison, but it feels like both to many residents - especially since an Israeli blockade has isolated them from the rest of the world.

In October 2008, RNW producer Eric Beauchemin travelled to Gaza for a mental health conference and spent time with the Saleh family. Fouzan Saleh suffers from depression. He's had to close his small textile factory and one by one sell off the sewing machines to support his family. He lives in a small apartment with his wife, three children and his 60 year old mother.

*** Earthbeat (repeat from Thursday) ***
This week on Earthbeat, we hear what noise you can get from a traffic cone, some drain pipes and a funnel. Recycling never sounded so good as we get a tour backstage with the Lost and Found Orchestra.

We also dig into an idea to make concrete out of carbon dioxide and find dodgy foundations to the scientific theory.

We have a report on Islam-friendly microfinance initiative and also discover why developing countries should reach for the stars, even when they have more immediate problems closer to home.

*** Earthbeat (primary programme) ***

This week in Earthbeat we do some digging behind the buzz-phrase 'cradle-to cradle'. The idea is a version of recycling, where nothing is wasted - where at the end of a product's life, you still have exactly what you had at the start. But is this idealism ever possible? We look at a couple of examples; following the life cycle of leaf plates in India, and carpet tiles made here in the Netherlands.
