Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 April 2023

Solar activity was at low to moderate levels. Low levels were observed on 03-05, 07, and 09 Apr while moderate levels were observed on 06 and 08 Apr. Region 3272 (S21, L=102, class/area Eai/280 on 09 Apr) was responsible for the majority of the C-class activity since its emergence on 05 Apr. The region also produced M3 and M2/1n flares at 06/0553 UTC and 08/0146 UTC, respectively. Other activity included a CME off the SW limb first observed at 07/1336 UTC that was associated with a filament eruption seen in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 07/0829 UTC centered near S27W10. Modeling indicated a miss, however, a glancing blow could not be ruled out early on 12 Apr. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels throughout the period due to CH HSS influence. The maximum flux was 4,290 pfu observed at 03/1455 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began with solar wind speed of around 528 km/s with total field near 6-7 nT under negative polarity CH HSS influence. By late on 05 Apr, solar wind speed returned to nominal levels until 09/2158 UTC when the total field showed a small increase to 8 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 03-04 Apr, quiet to unsettled levels on 05-07 and 09 Apr, and quiet levels on 08 Apr. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 April - 06 May 2023

Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for moderate levels (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) on 10-25 Apr and again from 02-06 May due to flare potential of Region 3272 and the return of old Region 3256 (S22, L=001) on 12 Apr. Very low to low levels are expected on 26 Apr-01 May. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-11 Apr and again on 23 Apr-06 May due to recurrent CH HSS influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 10-11 Apr due to CH HSS activity. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 12 Apr due to a combination of HSS influence and a possible glancing blow from the 07 Apr CME. Unsettled to active levels are expected again on 17-18 Apr, 20-22 Apr, and 26 Apr-04 May with G1 (Minor) storming likely on 20, 27, and 30 Apr due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 May 2021

Solar activity was at very low levels on 24-25 and 30 May while an increase to low levels occurred on 26-29 May. The majority of the flare activity was from Regions 2824 (N20, L=196, class/area Dho/250 on 27 May) and 2826 (N24, L=215, class/area Dko/280 on 27 May). 

The largest flare of the period was a C9/1f at 28/2313 UTC from Region 2824. Associated with this flare were Type II and Type IV radio sweeps along with a CME observed off the west limb in the SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at the 28/2312 UTC. WSA/ENLIL modeling of the CME showed the bulk of the plasma directed off the Sun-Earth line, however, there was potential for a glancing blow late on 01 Jun to early on 02 Jun. 

A greater than 10 MeV proton event (S1-Minor) began at 29/0300 UTC, reached a peak flux of 15 pfu at 29/0320 UTC, and ended at 29/0540 UTC associated with the aforementioned C9 flare on 28 May. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 24-26 May and decreased to normal-moderate levels on 27-30 May. The largest flux of the period was 1,530 pfu being observed at 25/1825 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. The period began with nominal solar wind conditions and quiet levels through early on 26 May. At 26/1148 UTC an impulsive increase in solar wind speed from approximately 300-350 km/s was observed with then a simultaneous increase in the total field from 3-8 nT, marking the arrival of a possible conglomeration of CMEs from 22-23 May.  

Total field continued to increase to 16 nT through early on 27 May while solar wind speed increased to 400-450 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to G1 (Minor) storm levels in the second half on 26 May, followed by quiet to active levels on 27 May. Solar wind speed continued between 380-490 km/s through the end of the period. Quiet conditions were once again observed on 28 May followed by quiet to unsettled levels on 29-30 May. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 May - 26 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels on 31 May - 11 Jun and again on 26 Jun. A slight chance for moderate (R1-Minor) flares exists on 12-25 Jun with the return of Region 2824 to the visible disk. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 18-22 Jun due to coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 01-04 Jun due to a combination of CH HSS effects as well as the potential for a glancing blow from the 28 May CME late on 01 Jun to early on 02 Jun. Unsettled to active levels are expected again on 16-17 Jun, with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 16 Jun due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Unsettled levels are likely to be on 26 Jun due to a possible reoccurring solar sector boundary crossing (SSBC).

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 - 28 February 2021

Solar activity reached low levels with C-class flare activity. Region 2804 (N21, L=309, class/area=Dso/190 on 27 Feb) produced the only two C-class flares observed this period. The first was a C2/Sf flare observed at 27/1800 UTC and the second was a C3/Sf flare observed at 28/0646 UTC. Both C-class flares were associated with narrow CME signatures that were directed away from the Sun-Earth line. 

A CME associated with a filament eruption in the SE quadrant on 20/1200 UTC (in LASCO C2 imagery) arrived in conjunction with coronal hole/high-speed stream influences, with the effects of both features observed over 24-26 Feb. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was moderate on 25 Feb and high throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 27 Feb and quiet to unsettled on 26 and 28 Feb. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 22-26 Feb due to a combination of negative polarity CH HSS influence and the arrival of the 20 Feb CME. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity-  01 March - 27 March 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low-to-low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be moderate on 10-19 Mar. High levels are expected on 01-09, and 20-27 Mar. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 02,  06, 12-13, 15, and 21-22 Mar, with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm conditions likely on 02 and 18-19 Mar, all due to recurrent CH HSSs. Mostly quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 March - 05 April 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Region 2759 (N28, L=263, class/area Hrx/030 on the 02 Apr) formed on the disk on 31 Mar and produced a few B-class events early on 04 Apr. The region decayed to plage on 05 Apr. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 01-04 Apr and the moderate levels on 30-31 Mar and 04-05 Apr. A maximum flux of 1,690 pfu was observed on 02 Apr at 1750 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was at unsettled to active levels on 30-31 Mar due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. The remainder of the period experienced quiet to unsettled levels with an isolated and active period observed late on 03 Apr.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 April - 02 May 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on the 19-22 Apr and 29-30 Apr. Normal to moderate levels are expected to prevail throughout the  remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 10-11 Apr, 15-19 Apr and 26-27 Apr. This is due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Generally quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 February - 03 March 2019

Solar activity was very low through the summary period. There were no numbered spot regions. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to high levels. High levels were observed on 28 Feb - 03 Mar. A peak flux of 45,516 pfu was observed at 03/1950 UTC. The remaining days of the summary period were at normal background levels.Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. Solar wind enhancements from the onset of influence from a negative polarity CH HSS increased geomagnetic levels from unsettled to active conditions after midday on 27 Feb.

Isolated periods of G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels were observed on 28 Feb - 01 Mar as wind speeds continued to increase, reaching a peak of 608 km/s on 01/0340 UTC. An isolated period of active conditions was followed by quiet to unsettled levels for the remainder of 02-03 Mar as the CH HSS slowly waned. The remaining days of the summary period were at quiet levels under nominal solar wind conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 March - 30 March 2019

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the forecast period. No notable regions are due to return to the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from normal background to very high levels. Very high levels are likely on 04-05 Mar and 29-30 Mar; high levels are likely on 06-13 Mar and 29-28 Mar; moderate levels are likely on 14-19 Mar; normal background levels are likely on 20-26 Mar. All enhancements in electron flux are anticipated in response to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 (Minor) levels are likely on 27-28 Mar; active levels are likely on 08-10 Mar, 26 Mar and 29 Mar; unsettled levels are likely on 04-05 Mar, 07 Mar, 11 Mar, 20 Mar and 30 Mar. Increases in geomagnetic field activity are anticipated due to the likely influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 - 22 April 2018

Solar activity was very low. Region 2706 (N03, L=281, class/area Dao/130 on 22 Apr) produced the strongest flare of the period, a B5 at 20/1704 UTC. The region continued slow growth through the end of the reporting period. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit ranged from normal to high levels on 10-20 Apr; high levels on 22 Apr and
moderate to high levels for the remaining days of the reporting period. The peak flux observed was 24,100 pfu at 21/2120 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet until 20 Apr, when unsettled to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic conditions were observed in response to CIR ahead of a negative polarity CH HSS. Total field peaked at 23 nT around 20/0510 UTC and slowly declined to around 5 nT by late on 20 Apr. Solar wind speeds were increased from around 290 km/s to a peak of near 620 km/s during the HSS proper late on 20 Apr. The geomagnetic response decreased to quiet to unsettled conditions over 21 Apr and finally to quiet on 22 Apr as influence from the CH HSS waned.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 April - 19 May 2018

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the forecast
period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at moderate to high levels on 23-30 Apr and 07-19
May; normal to moderate levels are expected from 01-06 May. Elevated levels of electron flux are expected due to the anticipation of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 26 Apr, 06 May, 09-10 May and 19 May; active levels are expected on 27 Apr, 07-08 Apr and 18 May; G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions are likely on 17 May. All enhancements in geomagnetic field activity are associated with the anticipated influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remaining days of the outlook
periods are expected to be mostly quiet.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 July 2017 Solar activity was very low throughout the summary period. A B1 flare, observed at 27/2136 UTC from a plage region near center disk, was the strongest event of the period. Region 2668 (N03, L=311, class/area Axx/010 on 25 Jul) decayed to plage by 26 Jul and Region 2669 (N18, L=255, class/area Axx/010 on 30 Jul) remained inactive. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to high levels on 26 Jul, high levels on 30 Jul and moderate
to high levels throughout the remaining days of the period. A maximum flux of 18,800 pfu was observed at 25/1515 UTC. The enhancements in flux levels were due to persistently elevated solar
winds from a slowly-waning, positive polarity CH HSS. Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels over the past week. Quiet to active levels were observed on 24 Jul and 26 July; quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 25 Jul and 27-28 Jul; the remaining days were quiet. Geomagnetic activity was associated with the influence of a slowly-waning, positive polarity
CH HSS enhancing solar wind speeds. A steady decline in wind speed was observed over the entire reporting period from a peak speed of 705 km/s at 24/2219 UTC to a low of around 350 km/s by the end of 30 Jul.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 July - 26 August 2017
Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class flare (R1-R2/Minor-Moderate) on 31 Jul - 13 Aug due to the return of old Region 2665 (S06, L=113) rotating across the visible
disk. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at very low levels.  No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from normal background to high levels. High levels are expected on 01-03 Aug, 05-10 Aug, and 18-26 Aug; moderate levels are expected 31 Jul and 11 Aug; normal background levels are expected for 04 Aug and 12-17 Aug. All enhancements in electron flux are due to multiple anticipated recurrent CH HSSs.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 (Minor) storm levels are likely on 04-05 Aug and again on 17-18 Aug; active conditions are likely on 31 Jul, 06 Aug and 19 Aug; unsettled levels are likely on 01-02 Aug, 07 Aug and 20-21 Aug; quiet conditions are expected for the remaining days of the outlook period. All anticipated enhancements in geomagnetic activity are due to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 - 22 January 2017

Solar activity was at low levels due to a C9/1f flare observed at 21/0726 UTC from Region 2628 (N12, L=173, class/area Dao/210 on 22 January). Region 2628 was responsible for additional C-class flaring on 21 January. The rest of the period was at very low levels. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with high levels observed on 16-17, and 20-22 January. The largest flux value of the period was 3,090 pfu observed at 16/1935 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels over the period. Solar wind parameters were indicative of background conditions to start the period. Early on 18 January, wind speed began to increase as a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) became geoeffective. Wind speed reached a maximum value of 651 km/s at 19/0320 UTC and total field peaked at 17 nT at 18/0605 UTC before gradually decreasing throughout the remainder of the period. The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels on 16-17 January, quiet to active levels on 18-19 & 21 January, and quiet to unsettled levels on 20 & 22 January. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 January - 18 February 2017

Solar activity is likely to be low with a slight chance for M-class flares on 23-31 January and 14-18 February due to the flare potential in Region 2628. Very low levels are expected on 01-13 February. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels likely on 23-27 January, 01-13 February, and again on 16-18 February due to CH HSS influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 23, 27-31 January, 01-07 February and 14-18 February with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 03 February due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 October 2016 Solar activity was very low to low with a single C-class flare observed on 17 Oct. At 17/0038 UTC, a C4 flare was observed from
Region 2599 (S15, L=144, class/area Cko/460 on 05 Oct) which had rotated around the southwest limb on 15 Oct. A nine degree long filament, centered near N26W02, was observed erupting in SDO/AIA 304 and GONG imagery at about 20/1300 UTC. A slow-moving, faint CME was
observed in LASCO C2 imagery with possible effects observed on 23 October. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit ranged from normal to very high levels. On 18 Oct very high levels were observed, with a peak level of 52,137 pfu. High levels were observed on 17 Oct and 19-22 Oct. Normal to high levels were observed on 23 Oct. Geomagnetic field activity during the reporting period ranged from quiet to active levels. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 17 Oct and tapered into quiet to unsettled levels through 19 Oct due to the waning effects of a CH HSS. Quiet conditions were observed from 20-22 Oct under an ambient solar wind regime. Quiet to unsettled conditions were noted 23-24 Oct due to a SSBC and initial
CH HSS effects.

The solar wind environment was above background levels on 17 Oct under the influence of a CH HSS with wind speeds between 700-800 km/s. Wind speeds gradually tapered to background conditions on 18-19 Oct. Winds increased again to around 450 km/s and minor enhancements to total field were observed on 23 Oct due to a SSBC and weak CH HSS effects.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
19 - 25 May 2008

Solar activity was very low. No X-ray flares were observed during the period. Regions 994 (S12, L=310, class/area, Bxo/020 on 19 May) and 996 (N09, L=256, class/area, Bxo/010 on 19 May) were on the disk when the period began as B-type groups. By 21 May both of these regions had decayed to spotless plage, and remained spotless through the remainder of the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during 23 - 25 May.

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels during the summary period. Activity levels did increase on 21 May to quiet to active levels due to a coronal hole high speed stream. Solar wind speed measurements from the ACE spacecraft began the period at around 340 km/s and slowly increased to a maximum of approximately 630 km/s at 1432 UTC on 21 May. The inter-planetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz component during this time ranged between +/- 7. Solar wind speeds declined throughout the rest of the summary period to end at about 450 km/s, with IMF Bz ranging between +/- 5.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
28 May - 23 June 2008

Solar activity is expected to be very low.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 01 - 10 June and 19 - 23
June.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet levels on 28 May. On 29 May a coronal hole high speed stream is expected to rotate into a geoeffective position and increase activity levels to quiet to unsettled levels; isolated periods of active conditions may be observed during this period. On 10 June activity levels should decrease again to mostly quiet conditions through 14 June. Another coronal hole high speed stream is expected to impact the geomagnetic field on 15 June. Activity levels should increase again to quiet to unsettled levels, with a chance for isolated active conditions. On 23 June conditions are expected to be at quiet levels.
